- Shoots are starting to roll back in for a lot of people (if they haven't for you yet it's okay) but with those shoots on their way back, comes that shoot anxiety again. I thought it would be helpful for everyone if we just got it out in the open and talked about it. I also share some tips on what I do to ease the nerves. Thank as always for watching :)

Danny Gevirtz talking to a camera: the most similar thing to a hug, digitally speaking. Period.
Haha thanks so much!!
😂😂😂
Agreed!!
Totally agree. Thank you Danny !
The "I love you" at the end is intense. I feel it. I never heard "I love you" that much growing up. It means a lot to me for you to create this content and add your heart in to it. Thank you.
Why am I crying? But yea, same.
Yeah totally, I literally get chills sometimes. Such a positive light in the whole UA-cam world.
it's sad people dont say it more, love you man 🤙🏼
Being a creator has given me more anxiety than anything else in my life. Learning to deal can be tough. Thanks for making this Danny!
Haha I feel you man. Thank you
It’s comforting to know other people also get nervous about things they’ve done a million times before.
Nervous means you care, love that so much. I find that going on a shoot is a lot like preparing for a test. There is only so much that you can prepare for before thinking is going to harm the results. I think once you know for a fact that you've prepared everything you just have to let it go and arrive on set, your studies will do the rest.
Of course! Thanks!
Looks like everyone has some type of anxiety. This makes me feel better in some way, cause i don't feel like i am the only one who has this
For sure thanks man!
I see a video by Danny, I click! lol, I get anxiety when just writing an email, getting back to shooting is going to be a wild experience.
Haha thanks so much man
I'm totally beginner and some time I just want to give up then I try and fail and try and fail but I m so happy and excited when I get it right.
I feel ya man! Thank you!
I haven't thought about pre-production preparation as also mental preparation, but it makes a lot of sense! Thanks!
Definitely is a lot of it! Thank you!
Man you're actually reading my mind with those titles haha!
Haha thanks man I try!
It happens to me every time 😂. In the starting i thought I'm the only one but then i started to watch interviews of experienced filmmakers & directors to find some answers and they all said the same thing. You're right it's just the fear of unknown and it's totally normal. At the beginning of the shoot day, it feels weird a little bit but after spending an hour doing lighting & all, things starts to become normal😁
Thanks for sharing man!
I was always told that the nervousness keeps you humble. It is so easy to let pride lead you, and it is not about you but about the story.
I think the "Who you are going to be?" part speaks the most to me. I always strive to be kind, helpful, and courteous on set. I've left too many productions upset because people in this industry aren't always nice. I think too often they are in the "zone" or trying to prove themselves and basic manners and kindness go out the window.
I felt this one on such a deep level bro, I get anxious before almost every shoot & ive been doing it & doing it actually quite well for nearly 8 years... the only time I don’t get anxiety before a shoot is when I know the location ahead of time from scouting it like you said or just knowing the client & how the vibe is working with them based on past shoots but other than that I’m a wreck in the beginning of the shoot until I warm up then I’m good!
Literally was contemplating this shooting a couple days ago-also for the first time since quarantine! But please, please do a video on your color grading style, on getting those green, warm, tungsten-y tones. ☺️
Loving the outdoor vibes :D! Also, I get the scaries just shooting UA-cam videos ... Thanks for the advice mann.
Thanks man! Glad someone else shares the "Lampenfieber". Last week was my first one in a while. And it was some agonising stress - even after two decades of holding a camera into people's faces.
Of course! Thanks so much!
Growing up playing lacrosse, all the way up through college, my coaches would always tell me to visualize myself winning that face-off, scoring that goal, making that good play. This video reminded me of this and really makes me want to take that mindset into my nights before a shoot.
Totally agree. I hace THE SAME anxiety... Cant sleep, can't breath... But this video helped me so much! Thank you so much.
From Spain!
I’m there with ya man. Thank you!
the shot of the ceiling fan changed my life thank you so much man
I love that you tackle the things that a lot of others don't like to discuss. Pre-shoot anxiety is definitely a thing for me and I really like your technique of visualizing "who you're going to be" when you walk on set.
Your challenge motivates me Danny! Keep it up!
It amazes me how you can calmly speak so composed for so long. Great advices man 💪
Man it feels so much better that I'm not the only one that gets this every shoot. Wholesome material. 🙏🙏🙏
We all know this anxiety. It is the best and only way: Prepare as much as you can, but stay flexible and ready to change everything around when needed.
Or as my camera man once said: "Let's make a plan to fuck it up."
And always keep in mind: Fear is good, when in control, it puts your body in a state of alert and adrenaline.
So, when you don't let the fear take control of you, it can be a great tool to get you sharp and ready.
Great channel & great content, Danny!
You do, what I always thought Peter McKinnon should have done to give his channel depth.
Keep up the great work.
Love the tips especially the one with imagining who you are :) thanks dude
Thank you as always homie!!
I am a full time Graphic Designer, but I am new to creating content on UA-cam. The anxiety I feel during the days leading up to shooting a video for my channel makes me lose sleep. I think as creatives a lot of the "anxiety" we feel is nervousness about what we are trying to create. If you can change your perspective though...and turn nervousness into excitement about creating... It can really help. I just posted my second video yesterday and I am EXCITED for the next one! Thanks for the video Danny!
Ahh good ol’ pre-shoot anxiety, my 2nd longest relationship. Especially had a decent whack of it on the first few jobs after lockdown, readjusting to not shooting for 2+ months, was sleep deprived (had a baby during lockdown) and generally just exhausted (we moved house two weeks after baby was born). Plus my gear was split across two cities for the first few jobs 😂. Had to do a lot of positive self talk to get my head straight and reconnect with the gratitude I have for doing what I do. Great tips man 👍🏻
Tomorrow is my first client shoot since February, and even though I got everything packed, charged and ready, there's that thing in the back of my head nagging and telling me it's all gonna blow up in my face and that everyone is going to finally see how much of an impostor I am. IDK how, but damn Daniel (lol) you got the best timing with these videos. Thank you so much for talking about this and being the voice of reason. Much love to Sansa, too.
Thanks for talking on this topic. Have totally dealt with this, and have had to learn to overcome. I’ve found that anxiety and excitement are very similar physical feelings. A lot of times anxiety is simply misplaced excitement :)
Thanks so much Ben!
I'm working from home on a freelance animation project and struggling with alot of anxiety and burnout. This video made me feel better. Thanks man.
Danny I am so glad I found your channel! That intro was perfect, the closeups, fast cuts, and music looked something out of hollywood! It's also comforting hearing your feelings around shoot anxiety since I dont think it ever goes away even with years of experience. Lastly man thanks for taking the time to reply to the comments in your videos it really is going above and beyond most people online and feels genuine.
Thanks so much man! Haha I try it’s hard to keep up with everyone these days tho
Anxiety and excitement stimulate the same emotions in the brain and body. Not that I am a therapist or anything but most anxiety is really excitement. I do some theatre acting and I have rarely if ever been afraid or anxious to go on stage. I love the lights hitting my face, becoming somebody I am not, the crowd gasping, crying, or laughing whether I am doing good or not. Once that curtain is 30 minutes until opening I am so excitied I can barely stand still cause I love it. I also feel this way about being on set. Just think why you are there on set to have fun and be excited.
As an industry pro for the past 5 years, this is SPOT ON advice
I love how genuine you sound in all of your videos. None of it feels scripted and it feels like you're talking face to face with the viewer.
Shoots remind me of my old days in swimming competitions lol. Racing brain, adrenaline surging, can`t sit still. But also, excitement, and it`s that part that I try to focus on the most to forget about the fear :) great video Danny, always inspiring and motivating to hear your perspective on things and your tips!
Your videos are like therapy for the filmmaker and I love you too.
That " I love you" sounds so genuine and heartwarming! 😢💕
You have no idea how much this video helped me. It’s 3am and I’m about to solo a series shoot in the next few days - writing, directing, operating, editing.. not to mention all the rental and equipment procurement.. a million thoughts going through my head and this video just made it all just click into place. I got this! Thank you so much :)
Sometimes I come back to this video to remind myself that pre shoot anxiety is normal, and this video always helps ease my mind! Thanks a ton Danny!
I downgraded my shooting setup/process to a simple fixed lens a shotgun mic and a handheld camera... with a major focus on story ... this works perfectly for documentary work... i film alone ... i visualise what i want as finished product before i film .. and enjoy the process and getting to know the story..
might not work evrytime but for the time being.. no anxiety or stress... just happiness.
Thanks so much for this video. Cheers
Thank you man for speaking out ! Really appreciate it :)
Danny, you have no idea how much I needed this video! I definitely struggle with shoot day anxiety and to hear someone else verbalize that they struggle with it as well is very comforting! I have felt many of the feelings you described! Thank you for what you do, I've recently found your channel over the past few weeks and have already learned so much!
So awesome man. Thank you!!
Got addicted to this channel. I do not even qualify as a "creative". However, I find your videos inspiring.
This hits home way more than it should! Thanks big bro!
Just getting ready to head out on a shoot, and this pops up. This is such a real video, I love that you’ve blown the door open on a conversation that seems like no one talks about! THANK YOU!
I always know you're going to tell me you love me at the end of your videos but it never ceases to put a smile on my face. Thanks for what you do buddy. I love you!
Haha love you brotha!!!
After my first practice shoot, I storyboarded and got all my ideas on paper for my next one. Helped me so much and I was actively looking forward to shooting when the day came. Thanks for the tips!
This is why I love your channel, Danny. The topics you cover as so relatable. Shoots popping up on my calendar now is exciting -- but at the same time, my shoot anxiety is nearly doubled thanks to the pandemic. But you're right, just gotta be responsible, well-planned, and safe. Thanks for this :)
Of course thanks so much!
Your videos are such a breath of fresh air in the world of UA-cam filmmakers. Subbed.
Watching this as i am trying to sleep after starting the preparation of my first solo directing video clip, i get nervous and afraid that it will look terrible and i will be a big joke for everybody, on the other hand i have been working hard and will continue in doing soo to make it as good as it can be, and seeing your videos has been a big help!!! And this video helped me cope with the pshycological side of things hahahaha thanks danny for your friendly aproach on so many subjects is really saving my life!
I like the mindset you inspire when going into a shoot. I must remember this. Also I think I will have to apply this to my daily life. I really love the "who are going to be". Thx for these tips they are really gonna make a difference
Of course! Thanks so much!!
Love this man! Definitely being prepped the *day* before and not the *night* before has helped with my anxiety for shoots
Great video! I can definitely relate to shoot day anxiety, so it's nice to hear someone like you a bit further down the career road talking about it too. Here's to feeling scared but creating anyways! :)
yeah so this was super helpful for me for a shoot literally tomorrow so thank you danny! keep this up!
Dude, thank you so much for just being you!!! Your such a G at all this and I love your style. Very inspirational!!!
Thanks Danny! I just found your channel today and love it. I have a shoot on Tuesday and it has been months since the last time I shot. The anxiety of the shoot has been debilitating in my creative process. You're tips are helping me to gain my confidence back!
You captured this so well! Such a real thing, I'm glad I'm not the only one who experiences this. Now that things are picking up again, I'm stoked to see some of your work as it seems like you grow so much with each piece of work you put out. Looking forward to continuing to follow the journey!
oh man, you are becoming my fav filmmaking youtuber. Everything is soooo relatable! Everytime I shoot a music video, there's this moment I think to myself "this is not going well, we have no time to shoot everything, how can I handle all of this group of people... NEVER EVER AGAIN!". But always, always, it ends with great footage and the final video is perfect.
Thanks for sharing Danny, this advice is golden!
I come back to this video every time. Got the shoot day scaries today. Thanks again Danny!
That’s amazing man thank you. You got this man
Thanks for sharing Danny. Definitely something I struggle with and it's comforting to see that I'm not the only one!
Of course! Thanks so much!
Thought your channel was pretty great... and then you made this video and I can't thank you enough for sharing tips for something that I didn't even think I could find answers to. Being a Philly native who just moved to Los Angeles, the anxiety is REAL. The genuine care and thoughtfulness you put into every one of your videos is both inspiring and comforting to know there's someone out there on the same journey I am, both career wise and spiritually. Thank you. I love you too. A lot. I hope one day we can work together.
Thank you for being so honest about something that so many of us go through. Love yout tips
Always spot on and right on time ! Thank you so much !
Haha thank you!! Appreciate you
I have a shoot with a pretty big client on Thursday so I needed to revisit this video :)
I'm directing my first shoot since lockdown and... I really needed this. Thank you. Love you too!
This video really hit me in the feels and I related to it a lot. Love you too
Outdoor shoots give me major shoot scaries... and your one video on shoot day anxiety is all shot outside. Your audio is so crisp and lighting so well controlled (i'm having anxiety just thinking about the work you put into this 😳😳😳👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
I think it was Martin Scorsese who said, "if you aren't physically ill then there is something wrong..." It's so true. There is nothing worse than self doubt and I think all creators have it. This video not only took a lot of guts, but it has helped me, and I am sure it has helped others. Thank you.
Hah that is so true. Thank you!
thanks again for spending time with me, and I love u too broo
Haha of course man thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I just discovered your channel this week and I am absolutely loving your content. Great work... thanks for sharing your experiences and feelings, that is so rare nowadays but more important than ever. I also get anxious before every shoot, and sometimes I can hardly sleep. But when I'm on set, I too close my eyes, make a prayer and think about who I want to be there, and I always find this supernatural strength and calm to get me trought the day. Isn't it amazing that we have such a thrilling job? Thanks!!
Haha absolutely! Thanks so much! Glad you found the channel
2 videos that I watch on you Chanel and both you get my heart :D, thank you dude
despite the gear stuff, this honestly can be applied to any career/job!! i love you this and you are perfect
I love my girlfriend!
Wow, love what you said here. I may just watch this video before my next shoot to calm myself down. You da man, Danny.
This video was really helpful, thanks for this Danny! Glad I discovered your channel.
Great message, perfect encapsulates a true filmmaker’s spirit.
If you’re nervous or excited for a shoot, it means you truly care about your craft. That’s a very important point - lots of in-house filmmakers that I know are not actual “creatives”, they are legit a production factory creating the same video for different clients with no soul whatsoever. If you’re a true creative, you put your soul into your work, and viewers can feel that!
I’ve recently realized that I’ve lost much of the stress before shooting, and that was when it hit me that I too am now doing repetitive corporate videos that give me no joy at all; interviews after interviews with the same content and BROLL for every shoot really sucked away the fun. The problem was that clients were fine with it, so why should we complain? But I drew the line and stopped making these specific cooperate videos when I realized it became a burden and something that I wanted to avoid.
Moral of the story is, if you don’t feel that scare before a shoot, you’re either really confident or need to get out of your comfort zone! Claim back your creativity
Thanks for sharing!
so many great tips man! I also liked the intro of this video a lot! Keep it up Danny!
Thanks so much Tyler!
Hey Danny ❤️🙏🏻Stevan here, I loved this message! Thank you so much for sharing this with us and for havung the courage and strength to do so. I resonated alot with what you said. Loved the energy which you transmitted through your loving presence, the ambient you set and the lovely music you used. Much love to you. The inevitable of this moment something I have learned through the Inner Engineering Program offered by Sadhguru (Isha Foundation, run by volunteers). Your words and your perspective on life verry much reminded me of it. Keep Inspiring ❤️🙏🏻
People don’t talk about this enough. I had my first shoot in a long time last week, and I got so sick to my stomach, and was sweating profusely. Thanks for making this. Love you 👍
Embracing the fear and preparation is key, things can still go wrong because the more people you involve and the more gear you take the more complex things can come, the important thing is how you handle it. Important advice no matter how experienced a cinema photographer anyone is. Danny you have pure talent, you're knocking the videos out of the ball park, yep you're outside or thats one AWESOME green screen. lol Love you mate take care
I too always have anxiety the day before the shoot, especially when I never done a certain kind of shoot before or when I worked with a new client (mostly when it's a big client), or when I'm alone. I guess what you're talking about is something similar with the power of visualization or praying or meditating before doing into something big to keep yourself calm. I do that too, along with taking deep breath. Thank you for your videos and love you too!
Thanks Victor!!
Me as a Cinematographer I feel every word you're saying! I honestly want you to be successful in what you are doing, but always to remain as calm and nice as you are right now! :))
Your videos have become like a therapy to me ever since I discovered your channel. I would like to thank you for changing my life better
Sir your titles catch my attention and your videos are excellent. I just love the way you delve in to the minds of us creators. Thank you so much for all this advice. I’m going to make it a point to watch this video before every shoot in future 😊
Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for this! I have my first solo shoot today in 6 months so I really needed this! Big love
Love your thoughts on this topic. Greetings from Hamburg!
Bro how are you so consistent? Every vid absolutely slaps. Can't thank you enough for keeping these going
Haha thanks bro. Honestly I don’t know how either. It’s a lot of work
I highly appreciate your honesty! That’s why I love to watch your videos. Also that you are not pretending to be the coolest cinematographer in the world, but the little kid having fun on shooting video :). Btw I love your work. Your images look so clean bc of composition and colours.
Thanks Danny! You are the best!
Glad work is picking up again for you man !! Love this intro by the way 👌
Haha thanks man! How about you?
Danny Gevirtz Same here, slowly going back to normal :). Have quite a lot of personal things going on at the moment that I have to actually say no more often than not.
Your tips are always so helpful, I hope you're aware of that!
As if you knew what could help us.
For real, thank you Danny!
Thanks so much Kylian!
Dude, are we the same person? It's wild! Yes, even as a photographer I felt this and it got better but then as I switched to doing video, it came back and way worse! Thank you for your vulnerability. It validates and gives me great tools to conquer issues I face too!
There's something on your voice that's so relaxing.
Dude you are so good... legit the most helpful filmmaker on UA-cam I’ve ever seen. You speak about everything I deal with. The shoot day anxiety is real. I appreciate your honesty. I wanna be like you in my approach to filmmaking.
So what a relevant topic! Especially considering what we are going back into when we go back to set. I think there’s a lot of anxiety around going to a set and trying to do a good job while also trying to avoid infecting yourself or others. This video is much appreciated man! And your outlook is super helpful! Have a good week, man!
Thanks so much Heath!
Been there, thanks for taking it up
Completely agree, thank you so much for making killer videos ❤️
Love you man, these videos are delightful to hear and to know we all have the same problems is reassuring !
I love these videos, cause it makes me feel not alone! Thanks Danny 😊👍
Of course man thank you!
danny just please swear you will never stop uploading content
