Most "filmmakers" on UA-cam only teach you how to be a good vlogger instead of teaching you anything about real filmmaking. This video alone is worth more than some whole channels when it comes to creating a good looking image that actually could be in a real film/movie. Thank you Danny!
HANDS DOWN the most valuable lighting instructions I've gotten from UA-cam. I learned more in 10 minutes, than I have in countless hours of other videos. Thank you so much!
That natural feel from the dinner table sequence was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. So subtle yet extremely apparent and complimentary to the mood of the frame.
How pumped you are lighting a scene DOESN'T matter?? No wonder my parents look at me like I'm nuts when it's golden hour and I start cheering 😂 Love it, thanks Danny!
Fantastic video! If. May just highlight something you did and that I I noticed other experienced DP’s doing; you mentioned it in passing but it’s the most important step to amazing shots every time... The step of not accepting a room how it is on arrival. Rather than walking into a room and looking for the “light motivation”... they find their shots, shooting into the corner of rooms, into doorways/hallways or windows, placing items in the foreground, looking for depth and interest, often moving lamps etc. in the process. THEN following all of the excellent instructions you laid out here. You briefly mentioned that you moved the furniture around but the motivation for how and why you did so deserves it’s own video breakdown! I’ve asked DP’s I’ve worked with and they remark it’s largely intuition but it seems like a teachable skill.
Light Spaces! Not Faces! Ding Ding Ding! we have a winner! Love the message you are sharing, the Why is really more important than the how. Love the look of your videos, well done! New sub!
Man, you’ve easily become by favorite channel/host on UA-cam. You make me feel the way FilmRiot did 10 years ago. You make me want to create... for me, not just for my clients. Thank you.
Same. I definitely have to write that down somewhere for my own reminder. Brilliant. I shoot a lot of interviews that involve no wide shots and the background is out of focus. Our shoots are so time-limited I'm always fighting the clock and people saying, "So... Are you ready?" Like 8 minutes into setup, even though I'm also setting up camera and audio. But even on shoots like that this principle could add just that much more realism and sense of place, which is just good storytelling.
I think that's one of the best video I've ever watched on lighting. Clear, concise, straight to the point, no nonsense. I swear some people seem like they're trying to over-complicate things on purpose. Thanks for that! Cheers
Besides the amazing sharing of knowledge that we are all thankful for, you feel like a really wholesome person with heart. Your energy is extremely calming. Thank you for the way in which you share your craft. Lots of love to you too, from Aotearoa.
I can’t believe this knowledge is free on UA-cam. So. Much. Good. Stuff. You’re always dropping the best knowledge on this channel! Thanks so much man!!
This is amazing brotha! I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say I appreciate the time u take to setup your shots and give a clear understanding of your breakdowns and what not! Love your channel!! ❤️
D one thing I like about you is the way you present yourself is very organic we’re tired of the cliche UA-camrs acting like peter I know he is a legend but I think everybody should at least find different thing’s that represent themselves. Thank you for being yourself man tell Anna she also did a great job.
@@DannyGevirtz Agree with Meija 100%. The cliche, rapid fire "hey guys" jump cut jump cut jump cut to make it through one sentence makes my head explode. Love the mellow vibe. Will subscribe now.
Love these can't wait for more. I'd pay for a lighting course with you. This video has so much valuable information, my request is that you dive into making more like these, unlike a lighting breakdown with just an image, I understand better with the BTS.
I'd love to shoot video sth like you did in this video. whenever I stuck at some point because I'm a newbie in this area, you show me the way to make it work! Thanks man and keep it up!
Danny if there will be a question to choose the top 5 youtube filmmakers, believe me you will be my easiest and first pick.Your observation is everything, I am glad I found you.
"with todays cameras you don't need much" - cut to an almost comically large lighting rig made me laugh good video bro I learned a lot keep up the good work
Thank you Danny! I’ve been looking into simplifying my shots drastically in terms of shots. Havnt really used artificial light but now that I have a clearer idea on simple lighting i definitely look for opportunities to use these tips! Thank you for taking the time to set up, shoot, and edit! Your videos are definitely appreciated 🙏🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🤝🤝🤝
Finally a video about lighting with added value, I've watched a ton of them from different youtubers but none had that kind of insight, I feel like I've learned from 100 videos in just 1. Thank you so much !
Hey mate, I’ve been looking for a tutorial on lighting coverage for ages! This is definitely one of the best videos I’ve seen on lighting for video! One question I’ve got is when you move the lights in tighter for the closeups, would you also reduce the light intensity to match the brightness of the wides, or would you just leave it as is? Thanks again mate!
Great one Danny! This has always been one of my struggles, getting my scenes to look natural in the environment - sure I can light my subject really moody or do some high key lighting, but it really breaks the video when it doesn't fit the overall environment. Love the demonstration and as always, keep up the good work bro ;) PS. Would be curious to see you break down different lighting techniques in a room with no natural sources of light (eg. window) and how you can change the mood completely with high key lighting, low key, etc!
My God if this isn't a very valuable film school. Thank you SO much fr making these kinds of videos. They are so informative and you truly are helping us evolve. TYSM!
Ive been watching UA-cam videos on lighting for probably a decade now and this was one of the best ones ive ever seen. Great job and nice style. The fog always makes such a big difference even though its so subtle, i love it

Loved this video!! It helped me so much. Thank you for creating it for us, I now find myself looking for the light that's there wherever I go. Thank you and we love you too!
You make great content man. The other youtubers, you just get this feeling their trying to sell you something. You can't take them serious. You do a good job and i learn alot from you.
I do tons outside & don't have a crew, so i've figured out natural light the best I can. This really helps for lighting inside scenes better than just throwing a hair light and key light lol. Thanks Danny! I need to watch more of your videos now haha.
Dude thank you so much. I am working on a project that needs some lighting and I don't know what to do. This video calmed my nerves and gave me guidance on what to shoot. Thank you so much!
I've watched countless of lighting tutorials in the past few months, and I just learned so much with you right now! Thank you for all this great info and clear examples, amazing content :)

Bro. You work lights like a magician. The final product on these shots are out of this world.
this dude's got a bright future ahead with all those lights and quality content
Haha thanks man!!!
I see what you did there!
If his future doesn’t feel bright enough, he could either move the lights closer to the subject, or just turn that dial up a little more.
Can't believe how much i've just learned in 10 minutes, your content is incredible thank you !
Haha amazing thank you!!!

This goes to show the amount of work/planning that goes into a single scene. Gotta respect quality cinematography when you see it!
Exactly - it's those small details that make so much difference yet so often go unnoticed!
Thanks so much man!
