    I find
    - writing kit list
    - having a moodboard for help with inpso, styling, makeup
    - like you mention chat to people on set.... maybe the talent waiting to come in next ask them to give the current talent some jokes... get that relaxed vibe
    - if budget having assistants, mua etc that you have worked with in past and can bounce ideas/solutions
    - shot list from client, so you know delivered and you can then add on maybe shots for own portfolio
    - drawing rough lights set ups
    - asking for advice from others, or getting a gaffer to handle all the lights so u can focus on talent
    - doing some exercise.... shakes off that built up energy and/or chilling to music
Have also had family loss to cancer ... hope you are keeping positive... know its hard to do all the time.

It takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there like that, and I appreciate your message. It sometimes can seem like everything runs smooth when you watch someone else do their job. But we so easily forget the things that need to be set aside sometimes in order to get the job done. I think it's an excellent video James, and it shows your level of professionalism, which is so important. More important than skillset sometimes. Very sorry to hear about your father, mother and sister. Thank you for your bravery in sharing your story.

Always comforting knowing I’m not the only majorly introverted person that likes to photograph people! But somehow we get it done and have to put aside our insecurities and turn on our confidence and charm haha. Just had a mild anxiety attack this week while editing some photos for a client I had been try to get for 3 years. The photos came out exactly as they expected and were very happy. All that anxiety for nothing!

Very timely! I am just a hobbyist and take photos for my husband’s business (social media). Last weekend, when a hired photographer did now show up for a CrossFit competition at our gym - I had to ‘pretend’ I knew what I was doing. I think I spent the entire 6-8 hours anxious…..I barely spoke to anyone. Somewhat comforting to know a talented pro like you has similar feelings. Not that I want anyone to feel that way - but at least I am not alone. Great video! I very much respect your sharing something that is very sensitive.

    Hey James,
This is great advice. I have experienced these and more when I first started shooting commercial content. I still am nervous with every shoot but that's natural.
One thing that helps is to get the first test shot fired and adjust. I think getting the first image on screen help to get the day going and sets the direction.
One big tip from me is to not to let anyone pressure or push you beyond your comfort zone. A lot of shoots my have clients or producers who are overly involved and cause photographers to do something that is not normal for them.
I also try to pad a little more time and resources into the production just in case things go a little bit long. Thinking about over time and other unforeseen factors can add pressure.
    Thanks!

One more thing, Jay Meisel said to take interesting pictures, you have to be an interesting person.
Pictures are a reflection of yourself and we should try to our best selves and have interesting personality and experience to bring with us.

The anxiety is a good thing, I think. I draw energy from it for every shoot, no matter how small it is. I triple check everything I need, I overpurchase new equipment that will not help me with this particular shoot but gets me into a whole other realm for the next one and I think it's also a sign of me wanting to do it as perfectly as possible. I arrive extra early on location, I always have at least one assistant no matter how small the shoot is to ensure I don't forget anything (two brains just remember more than one brain) and once the shutter starts clicking I fall into a productive calm and instantly turn on the guide/entertainer mode. Every single photoshoot so far was a success with happy models and clients and that is what I remember once I get on my knee or put the cam onto the tripod. They hire me for a reason and for them it is way more exciting than for me who's done it many times. To me it is a little bit what stage fright for a seasoned singer must be - no matter how often they sang the song, they still want to please the audience and get those butterflies going. I honestly enjoy my pre-shoot anxiety in a way because it shows me that I still care and enjoy what I do to a point that excites me. I think once you embrace that anxiety it can be the fuel that keeps you going and makes you strive to become better with every shoot.

This sounds very familiar. Days before a big shoot, I talks to the creatives to get a good idea of what they want. Then I previsualize the images I want to make and draw a lighting plan based on that. The lighting plan is the basis for my gearlist with which I start a few days before the shoot so I can add things that pop-up later. And I remind myself to basically "stick to the (lighting) plan". Of course things can change, but as I have thought about it longer, it is the basis. All of this gives me some piece of mind, but still I will lose some sleep. Some of the anxiety stays until I get out of the car at the location or studio. Then it's gone.

Once you stop getting nervous pre shoot.. it's time to hang up the camera.
    Everyone does.
Mine was heightened last Saturday after opening the door to my studio to fine the ceiling had collapsed and water had got it ruining the floor and 3-4 studio lights.. this was T- 1.45 hours pre shoot. Thankfully the photo community is amazing and within 60 mins I had access to an alternate studio and my back up lights were good to go.
Also I have had a number of offers of help, studio spaces to use whilst mine is repaired and help to sort the mess.
Got the shoot done and my good friend of 20+ years drove over from Liverpool to help start the clean up.
If you struggle with things, get nervous or need help.. Ask. Talk about it. Folk are around that can help.

Good video with something importent that I belive most of us creators feeling. I got it at every shot Im in exactly same way as it was back in time as martial artist instructor didnt care if it was childgroup or adult advanced members I got anxiety alot but like in training after the "chi" it was gone... Like here as photographer so fast Im press the button Im all in and Im in the mood. Just be done with a photoshoot for a musicgroup for theys new albumrelease and I was little scare with thoughts like think if they dont love the outcome. But i was asking what the album about what is the real about the music and when they told me it was about mental health like anxiety and depress, that I can do and man if you get tears from a picture from the client then I belive you get it right and every job its same for me. But i think its a good thing aswell because when we got the anxiety we work around it and get the best of us to our clients.
Sorry for long text but its pretty hard to explain in words how the minds working.
Keep it up and cheers 👍🙂

My anxiety is always wondering if I'm going to nail that perfect white background. If I blast light and subject is too close, it spills back onto them and I lose contrast. Pull them way away and it limits poses as holding their arms up goes off the backdrop. Try to make light output on backdrop perfect and I invariably find hot spot and then falloff that goes yellow... I'd also love to hear how you recover the perfect even white background in post editing without it changing the subject!
