Having been an LDS missionary, it is absolutely interesting grounds for a horror film. Whether the depiction of the missionaries and the Church is accurate, it is nice to see Mormon characters in cinema.
He’s really leaning into this new phase in his career and I’m all here for it. I hope he finds his ways to the Coen Bros. or the Edgar Wright camp. He’s thrive
I agree with you on the ending of horror movies. There are two kinds of horror movie endings I want to see: bittersweet, if a director is doing a PG-13, mainstream horror film, or a freakin' "No one gets out of here alive" gut punch of an ending. No horror film should end with "Happily Ever After" unless that concept is turned on its head somehow. Thank you for this review. James!
I'll definitely be seeing this when it comes out! Excited to see Hugh Grant in an A24 horror film. I've seen Sophie Thatcher and a few things and she's always great. She's in the Showtime series yellow jacket. It's a pretty crazy and fun show
When you talked about A24 and Neon in particular, it's been quite a year for horror and suspense. There's been so many, not to mention highlights like Longlegs or Strange Darling or Terrifier 3 or, though I haven't seen it, Abigail. In a year where only a few films have managed to stand out both critically and financially, and in a period where we've had a number of financial duds, it's nice that we've had a steady stream of horror and suspense films. And funny that you mention The Exorcist- I recently watched that for the first time and it WAS the original, theatrical version, but I've heard that this other cut has some additional scenes.
I plan to see Heretic. I understand that Hugh Grant. Kept getting some of his lines wrong. To see what Chloe and Sophie would say. The director asked Chloe to correct. Grant. It sounds like a good movie. I'm new to this channel. I do like it. Your good talking about the movie Heretic. A24 and Neon are making some good movies. I'm one of those horror junkies. Add science fiction to that list. I love the alien franchise. 😊
I feel like a lot of people are missing something in the second half of the film. Its about belief and the veneer of belief. Sister Paxton is constantly questioning things and thinking about stuff, but desperately wants to believe. She is faking it until she makes it. It's only in the latter part of the film that she is forced to drop the veneer. The ending leaves it open for you to decide what side she falls down on in the end.
I watched this movie yesterday in Yuma, and it stuck with me afterward while I went shopping for household goods. Then, in the parking lot, it suddenly struck me that Mr. Reed is a polygamist, which ties in to things he'd said to the two Sisters about their church's history. --
I've watched this movie a few times now and I can't see Hugh\ Mr Reeds hair any wetter to get the bike lock at any time from when he greeted them at the door to the first room where he was talking about polygamy to the 2 rooms of belief and disbelief so that's a lie or wasn't shown on camera very well as his clothes didn't even seem damp show me his damp clothes and his wet hair>??? Also without the door interruption that was outside his control who would he have been able to perform his magic trick in the basement???? Nobody mentions this at all!!!!
Some of these New buzz movies starts great but ends up with a disappointment.. like sex when it starts great and exciting but ends with a disappointment and a dildo 😒..wtf?
Sophie Thatcher was the TV show Yellowjackets in which she plays the younger version of Juliette Lewis' character. I hope she stars in more movies. P.S Sophie Thatcher looks like Billie Eilish
Cant remember the title .. edit..(Prospect )but she was in a sci fi film that was really good. One of the stronger performances in Yellowjackets for sure. I expected her to explode into Hollywood after that but she didn't... I hope shes being picky for roles.
There it is, there is always that 1 person that has to pull political shit into everything.. you should go tonthe doctor and see if they have anything for the trumpitous and hatred that others are always being accused of..
I disagree a lot with you.. Not very important, but I just remeberd " The straight storY" AND HOW THAT MAKES NO SENSE. It is a greate movie. Not completly drunk, but close
Hansel and Gretel vibes on the opening, through the trees to the house.
Ever since his turn in Paddington 2, I've had a new appreciation for Hugh, and I'll definitely be watching this.

A24 and Neon make prestige horror meanwhile Blumhouse makes trashy horror

I can't wait to check this one out.
Great review as always, James!

Don’t sleep on MadS! Total sleeper
I thought Longlegs was good, not great. Then, I saw Neon’s Cuckoo. Now, that was a smart movie.

It’s like Four Weddings & A Funeral Hugh Grant went into a car with a prostitute on Sunset Boulevard and came out sleazy Hugh and an actor with range!
Two weeks notice and mickey blue eyes are Two of my favorites
Hugh Grant won my eternal dollar when he appeared as a cannibal warlord in "Cloud Atlas."
The Mark Kermode review turned me onto this movie. I'll give it a look when it's streaming.

Also, I agree that old Hugh Grant is a lot more interesting than young Hugh Grant.

Thanks mate i`ll be seeing it
Cant wait to see it.
Hi James!
Don`t forget Speak no Evil from A24
Young Hugh Grant would've been perfect as Dennis Barlow in Waugh's THE LOVED ONE.
Kepplinger
Interesting to note that real Later Day Saints missionaries do suffer violence, accidents and fatalities while on their missions.
Cool movie. But a bit overrated.
The religious dialogues alone make it worth seeing
Requiem for a dream had a good ending
Omg, LMFAO! 😂. (Ass to ass!)
Why do you hate Q&As?

That's where I know her from!
I am still SHOCKED that Sophie Thatcher is American, and not British, with that name.
Cant remember the title .. edit..(Prospect )but she was in a sci fi film that was really good. One of the stronger performances in Yellowjackets for sure. I expected her to explode into Hollywood after that but she didn't... I hope shes being picky for roles.
Correct…The old Hugh Grant is much better.
What even is this movie? I just cant believe they used the same song saw x used for their trailer. Movie didn't look interesting to me at all.
I’ll watch the film in the cinema , unless Trump wins , that’s too much horror
Trump 2024 🇺🇸
That'll be the true horror movie.
There it is, there is always that 1 person that has to pull political shit into everything.. you should go tonthe doctor and see if they have anything for the trumpitous and hatred that others are always being accused of..
"65" was so lame that I almost cancelled my A-List reservation the second I heard you mention that it came from these directors! lol
I disagree a lot with you.. Not very important, but I just remeberd " The straight storY" AND HOW THAT MAKES NO SENSE. It is a greate movie.
Not completly drunk, but close
7 minutes in and you are rambling about absolute nonsense.
Lol
Always keep one in the chamber son! You feel me?
Hey, no spoilers!
