Ex Mormon missionary and EQ president here; loved your review and the film. To clarify, Mormons do believe in the resurrection-they do not believe in reincarnation. I think you may have meant to say that anyway but here it is. They DO believe in eternal progression like many reincarnation believers.
I saw the thought provoking thriller twice. But I agree that the movies raises so many questions. One of the questions that really intrigued me was the one asked during the Cages Women scene where Mr. Reed is asked, "Why to you do this?" while Mr. Reed replies, "Why do you let me?". Understanding that Mr.Reed represents a personification of the Church/Religion, the question reverberates loudly when you consider all the power plays for control and atrocities committed by the religious groups/cults. I personally reflected on the publicly documented cases of Church abuse of children. It became standard protocol for the churches to silence the victims while simply relocating the clergyman to a new location where the offender still has access to children. Hence, the question "Why to you do this?". But allegation of their type and magnitude have been levied against the church for a long time. Frequently they would rise and fall in the news cycles. Despite the public awareness, vulnerable segments of our population are still fueled through the predatory faith organization. Hence the question, "Why do you let me?". Why? Why don't we protect ourselves and our vulnerable loved ones when it comes to these institution? Why are we so quick to forgive? What kind of subconscious psychological conditioning is at work? There should be more movies of the kind. As Socrates famously said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
This is an awesome take on the movie! Power play really is the keyword here. I was so intrigued every time Mr. Reed would start to explain something, which would make the girls more and more scared each time. This might also be the dynamic between the church and its followers where they will follow the church and do what it tells them just to please the church. Which then again raises the questions you asked. There really is so much more to this movie than what I mentioned, thank you for adding this!
perhaps the term Stockholm Syndrome applies here. As we know believers are obliged to routinely attend church for indoctrination into the faith to deepen the faith and knowledge of the interpretations of the allegorical bible myths within the pages of their holy book. In time the believers are active participants in maintaining their own salvation/ mental conditioning. The Bible even states “Be thou transformed through the renewal of the mind .“. I guess once can have a person attested to the reality of a talking donkey, a man surviving 3 days inside a fish and a person returning to life after 3 days, you know the religious credences are firmly intact. At this point is perhaps when the church exploits its sheep. Perhaps it is here where the sheep is sheered and discovers that the Shepherd enjoys lamb chops as much as the wolves. But the sheep will never run! In late 2019, the presence of an intrusive pandemic demanded a deviation from the standard protocol of regulation human contact to break the organism’s pathway to infection. The religious community would react; some compliantly, while others with complete defiance. It appears that some could see the gravity of the moment and wanted to preserve lives; while others were more interested in preserving the church and its psychological connection to its hosts. In time we would discover that the churches resisted the quarantine where right, because without routine mental conditioning the hosts would begin to think for themselves. Religious Deconstruction and Attrition away from the church presented itself as a expected natural occurrence to a haunted mental condition program. Unfortunately, some don’t have a wholistic view of religion, so they seek out the certainty and its ability to pacify the man in a chaotic existence. For them, offering their mind, body and humanity to the host we call religion is a tolerable exchange.
People who never have seen any A24 movie, will hate Heretic. They want lots of blood & chasing, and they want it now😵💫 I love 93% of anything A24. Sister Paxton was my favorite & stole the show for me. She was genuinely bubbly & fun!🙏🥰🌟
@@fridatales I wanted to comment/respond to that, so I'm glad I saw this thread clearing up what you meant to say. Mormons do believe in resurrection, but not in reincarnation.
To answer your questions: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does believe in resurrection, the reuniting of the spirit and the physical body after death. But this does not occur until Jesus comes again. Sister Paxton talking about coming back as a butterfly is called reincarnation, something that is not believed in the church. The movie is a metaphor for the last days as foretold in The Revelation, the last book in the bible. Assuming that is true, during the times of tribulation everyone will have to choose between control or death. Mr. Reed said, speaking about the game of monopoly, only a fraction of the people actually finish it. And pointing to the bible says, "maybe that reminds you of something else. Just a thought".
SPOILERS I like how movie tricked you in thinking about supernatural stuff (like Hereditary), when this literally story about looney who kills people to prove his point. I was literally shocked when he kills that girl, like I don't expect him doing this with his bare hands, I don't know why😂from trailer I think there is some entety living in basement (about that...) also his dialog about implanted thing TERRIFYING, because it literally how schizophrenic people thinking😢

Religion and faith are two different things. Sounds like this was an interesting exploration.
It was! It encourages you to really think about these things, and it might change the way you view them.
Love the review. Please review Elevation next.
Hey thank you so much! I'll make a note of that, definitely my type of movie 🙌🏼

Yeah I agree, an A24 viewer is one who is open to weirdness and discussions. I personally loove their movies and will try and watch many more!
did you notice the butterfly at the end ?
I did! A great detail. And it very much ties in with the resurrection question 🤔

Reincarnation, I misspoke 😅 the pinned comment under the video clarifies it!
