I loved it! So over the top, and you're right, there's not enough bold (and bonkers) filmmaking. I think they could have cut the food scene, but overall it was amazing.
Definitely Vertigo theme when she’s revealed as her true self to Jimmy Stewart. Which I thought was wild due to it was the same score re-used in 12 Monkeys.
This movie has provoked some of the strongest reactions I’ve seen from cinema in a long time. I haven’t seen many body horror flicks but I thought this one was so damn well made. But it seems like some people were so disgusted by it they’re not even appreciating the movie for what it is.
Totally. There's plenty to criticize, but it is also a rip-roaring good times at the movies and the perfect answer to all the nauseatingly chaste and celibate movies being cranked out by the big studios.
The climax has gotten the most criticism, but i love it and dont think it undermines the narrative or the tone. I was expecting that sort of audacious, unhinged finale for most of the movie. She becomes a complete alien creature, no longer merely a decaying human but a total abomination. All that is left when weve chosen to totally annihilate our selves is this infinitely maleable ball of flesh and viscera that constitutes our form.
I agree. When you see the kind of monstrosities former beauties like Madonna have become after years of surgical interventions it's understandable that the director went there.

I missed my press screening yesterday at NYFF due to 'The Substance', but I have a ticket to see 'The Brutalist' at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 11th. I've heard nothing but good things.
The Re-Animator is one of my all-time faves so it is too early for me to make that comparison, but if you like The Re-Animator, you might be the perfect audience for The Substance.
Hands down, it's my favorite movie of the year, but I totally agree with you about the end overstaying it's welcome. You know the exact point it should end but it keeps going. But, I thought about it later and thought, 'if it had ended there, it would just be a Black Mirror episode'. By continuing on to new heights of absurdity, it's cements its place as one of the most bizarre films of all time. Very Lynchian or Cronenberg-esque. What a fantastic year for horror 2024 has been! ALSO: I wanted to add that Demi Moore and Andi McDowell became household names starring in St Elmos Fire and both of their daughters (Rumer Willis) are in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as Manson girls. So, Demi is kinda Margaret Qualley's movie star "aunt" and this movie felt like it was made by a bunch of friends for fun. I don't know if anyone else picked up on that, but it felt like a passion project.
I can't wait to see it. I just watched Possessor for the first time. Gives me thise vibes a bit. The drug reminds me of Re-Animator. I watched Oddity, as per your recommendation, and hated it. But I agreed with your assessment of Longlegs, so, now, I don’t know what to think about this movie.
I didn't know Qualley was Andie McDowell's daughter. That explains her interesting bone structure and her sudden appearance in everything as well. Nepo babies do have a way of getting to the top faster. My personal theory about the uglification of movies and video games is that the people who are getting ahead these days (with the exception of Qualley who is very pretty) are either DEI hires, or nepo-babies who aren't as attractive or talented as their parents (regression to the mean and all that) and they are uglifying everything by way of revenge for not being "the beautiful people".
Had a feeling you'd like it 😅Definitely surprise gem of the year. Aside from concept inspiration, gave me vibes from other directors and movies for sure. Insight nailed as usual 🙌🏾🤘🏼
It was an absolute blast. Hopefully this movie will lead to younger film enthusiasts going back and sinking their teeth into the work of Lynch and Cronenberg.
Hey man I'm really curious about this one my dad and my brother are going to see it with me but I've heard things like "it's disgusting" "most violent movie ever made" how violent are we talking cause my dad and brother are fine with violence up to an extent. If it's just violent for no reason then they will hate it but if it is part of the story that's fine
It’s not violent in that sense. But maybe for a few minutes. It’s a bit hard to stomach but not because body horror. It’s in the last act. I would say it’s very violent in the sense the body horror isn’t holding back. You get puss. You get things coming outta holes that shouldn’t. Decaying. Body parts developing and dropping out of other body parts. Sprays of blood like Evil Dead 2013. You know how body horror typically accumulates in a monster appearing so there’s that. It’s over the top with some of it like Cronenberg’s horror films or Braindead aka Dead Alive.
Well the violence is definitely part of the story, but if they have no appetite for splatter and gore, the latter part of the movie might give them the heebie jeebies.
@geekinwithJamesHancock we have strong stomachs. My dad was trying to get me to watch a serbian film once and he said it was a shit movie and that it was just edgy and violent to make the viewer feel angry. Sounds like the substance uses it's violence in a meaningful way. Can't wait to see this one
I donno if I missed this, but was it stated that whether or not both old and young share the memories and experiences when they exchange places? coz that may explain why, in my eyes, both sides develop individual personalities and became different people at the end.
I think the implication is that she had the memories, but because they aren't embodied, they don't really feel real. She's not getting the dopamine rush of the other's experiences, hence the reason old Lisa is eating all that food by way of revenge for not getting to experience the youthful Sue's glory and sensuality.
Went to check out the movie at Regal and…. I describe this movie as “Lifeforce” meets “Under The Skin” and “Love Lies Bleeding” on steroids. Some grossed up shit in this movie. I had to bring a barf bag seeing The Substance. But I had a great time. Body horror creature movies are fun to watch.
Do you ever have to pay to go to theaters James? You go so often I figured they must pay for your tickets. If so at what subscriber number did they start to?

I loved both The Substance and Revenge has been a favorite ever since it came out. Really glad I got to see The Substance in the cinema! What a tremendous experience.
I actually think the beautiful photography IS actually commentary on the male gaze lol. She constantly cuts back to the empty void of the black camera lens in the dance scene.
Women are under no obligation to cater to the male gaze yet they all seem to do it willingly, and now beautiful women are prostituting themselves on platforms like OF to the male gaze of thousands of utter strangers for money.
This was basically a two hour long EC comic. Broad, cartoonish and far from subtle. I enjoyed it for what it was, but I would caution fans of David Cronenberg and Julia Ducournau to not go in expecting something as refined or involved as their films.
Someone who loved and accepted themselves the way they are (warts, wrinkles, and all) wouldn't use The Substance. Anyone using this stuff is bound to abuse it eventually -- because the reasons they're using it are fucked up. The older man Elisabeth met who was also using The Substance didn't look like he was doing so well, either. I would've liked to see what happened to him.
Had a great time watching this flick. I feel like the movie had multiple messages above and beyond just the mistreatment of women young and old in Hollywood. I feel like we also held Elisabeth partially responsible for not finding value in herself beyond her image and showed the monster she became for not accepting her reality. Lovely original movie that wore its influences on its sleeve but managed to have its own voice. Definitely 20 minutes too long but I'd take that over not enough.
I had more or less the same assessment. The theme park, gorefest ending does break the tension. The film was pretty good up to and including the girlfight between the beautiful and decrepit version Demi Moore plays. I mostly hated the third act, and the creature designs weren't anything brilliant. I wish they had just stayed with the aging thing and beauty contrast. It felt like it needed more of a serious ending than the campy gore stuff. I just thought that was a bit hockey and the film lost me at that point. Not a classic but interesting. I also laughed pretty hard when she is throwing stuff at the TV and losing it. I wish her character had been more of a focus throughout.
I think the tension needed to end on an extreme note. They had already pointed in that direction with the extremity of the "birth" of Sue and the degradation of Lisa.
Anyone who takes offense with Quaids character.....? It's literally the point of the movie! This movie is like the barstard child of The Fly, Elephant Man, and Severance! Plus several other influences. My only criticism is the final act. It's too OTT and breaks the tone. But I get why they did it. Just takes away from the perfection of the first half
Looking forward to this but don't want to see one second of rubber or latex - which mars much of Cronenberg's work - and will drag me right out of the movie. There is no rubber or latex muppet work in this - right James?
There's an interesting blend of practical and digital effects, some of which is effective, some of which is not, but I think on the whole you'll enjoy what they came up with.
She's spend probably hundreds of thousands to maintain that beauty. She's also been pretty conservative in the facial surgery so she doesn't look like the caricature that someone like Madonna has become.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 agreed, but it's difficult to keep the human body looking young and tight at a older age. That's hard work in the gym, genetics, or both
I was disappointed. It was an empty, shallow, deeply unsubtle film. That "Requiem For a Dream" style editing was just awful. Any messages it was hoping to convey (the film has VIEWS) were totally undermined and even overturned, at times. The film is kinda dumb. Do I think it's bad? Ehh..it has some good moments. It has moments of campy fun in the performances, and one scene of genuine insight (when Moore's "Elizabeth Sparkle" can't leave the house for a date). It's such ADD-filmmaking. The effects at the end were amazing, sure, but I have seen it before. "Society"! Cronenberg it is NOT. Just watch one of his body-horrors, or watch "Society". That's a much better film. Or, if you are an old fuddy-duddy like me, read "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. Now *that's* a camp classic.
Yes it is!! I LOVE Coralie's directorial style! Her influences are very potent, yet she has created her own style, and I am here for the artsy, sexy, intelligent and body-horror laden gore!!
Hopefully I did not oversell it which I'm prone to do anytime a flick delivers some of the hardcore ingredients that are missing from so many mainstream movies.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock it was nice to hear you enjoyed the movie, you're usually disappointed at least... Love the content🤙 keep up the Stella work dude...
Sorry mate, but I didn't like this movie very much. Yes, it's original, the cinematic style, and the acting were all excellent. Even the story was a good idea, but the end of the movie was awful and it ruined the entire experience for me. The whole movie was balancing on this line at the edge of absurdity, and it kept on the line until the end when it long jumped across it.
She birthed a 24 year old woman out of her back. How can you say it went too far at the end, lol? To me it was a logical extension of the weird idea it started with.
So disappointed after all the hype. Talk about style over substance...oh the irony. Highly derivative to the point of distraction. Not one character to empathise with, every male character an awful stereotype. Maybe a teenagers popcorn wankfest but to call it a classic already...calm yourselves.
Masterpiece or not, it's a great reason to go to the cinema.

Exactly what I was thinking of when all the craziness went down. Surprised not many more people have mentioned this comparison.
Yep. You sold me. 👏🏾👍🏾
Sounds good! Hopefully I didn't steer you astray.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock nah. I'm gone have to check this out this weekend. I'm STARVED for good adult entertainment. 😫
Sigh. I just saw it. I'm gonna need a few days to process it, but you've been dropping some bangers for recommendations. 👍🏾
The most touching part was when she couldn't even bring herself to go on a date.
Great film! Mixture of requiem for a dream, Death becomes her & The Fly!
Make sure to watch Revenge ❤
Anyone who takes offense with Quaids character.....? It's literally the point of the movie!
This movie is like the barstard child of The Fly, Elephant Man, and Severance! Plus several other influences.
My only criticism is the final act. It's too OTT and breaks the tone. But I get why they did it. Just takes away from the perfection of the first half
It's many things. But it isn't "intensely erotic".
I guess you could call it erotic in the same sense Naked Lunch was erotic. It references sex without being arousing.
Diddy would know a lot about the price of fame
I loved Margaret qualley in sanctuary.
Cheers
Right back at you!

Calling this movie erotic is a very odd choice and makes it look like you were completely tone deaf to the themes which were brought up.
Yeah I didn't find it arousing at all. Even the sex scene was horrific.
It’s called practical effects Einstein. And those are the best effects there is.
Where is your penguin review?
Demi is one of those rare timeless beauty's

Gives me Neon Demon vibes.
The movie was very poor.
Revenge is incredible
Yes it is!! I LOVE Coralie's directorial style! Her influences are very potent, yet she has created her own style, and I am here for the artsy, sexy, intelligent and body-horror laden gore!!
Been loving this movie
SO FREAKIN GOOD!!
A gloriously gross masterpiece!
Loved it
💚🇬🇧🌱Sounds great🤙
Hopefully I did not oversell it which I'm prone to do anytime a flick delivers some of the hardcore ingredients that are missing from so many mainstream movies.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 nah, i really didn’t like it. It was so over the top that it lost all interest to me.
@@decimustv4257 Fair enough
as a heterosexual male i recommend this movie. dont go with your wife though.
Why? I thought it was an amazing conversational movie
Women know what y'all men look at on Instagram / Snapchat so why be demure
I went with my bf.
So disappointed after all the hype. Talk about style over substance...oh the irony. Highly derivative to the point of distraction. Not one character to empathise with, every male character an awful stereotype. Maybe a teenagers popcorn wankfest but to call it a classic already...calm yourselves.
Really good movie, could have been great but the ending goes off the rails.
That’s the point, to go off the rails.
A few more F bombs. Over use of profanity is a sign of a limited vocabulary.
I 100% fucking agree.
The movie is 30 minutes too long and goes to a dumb camp gross ending. It could have been great.
