    My great dog Deputy was placed on Hill's Science Diet in summer 1978 till he passed away in October 78. He HATED it! It made his last days even more miserable than necessary! If a dog isn't going to last long, he/she should be given a treat of cooked bacon to cheer it up. Or something else. Even condemned prisoners get to choose a tasty meal.

    This reminds me of people who tell people with cancer not to take chemo and instead eat 10,000 oranges and have 2 coffee enemas a day. A lot of boutique brands rely on heavy marketing and no real nutrition science to back up their claims. It may make you feel good that you think your dog is eating wild-caught salmon ripped away from the jaws of a grizzly bear in Alaska, but in reality, you may not be meeting your pet's nutritional needs. I trust my vet.

    • @thebkpets
      @thebkpets  Місяць тому

      Naw you got cancer, you may need chemo. High quality “boutique” brands still employ board certified veterinary nutritionists that formulate their recipes to meet AAFCO or FEDIAF guidelines. You know what’s crazy though, there are a few recent studies that tested some of the top kibble brands to see if they nutrition labels were accurate and what they found was that many of the foods have ingredients in them that weren’t on the ingredient panel, and had ingredients on the ingredient panel that weren’t in the food. I hate to tell you but your vet’s education was heavily influenced by big kibble companies with the agenda to sell as much kibble as possible. No hate to vets either, it isn’t their fault their education is sponsored by Mars.

    Infomative and thorough video. A study by the U. of New Mexico, of six dog food brands, found that all of them contain ingredients not listed on the label. All of them were missing some ingredients that were listed. Two of the brands contained dog DNA. Ouch! In a lawsuit filed against Rachael Ray nutrish, it was disclosed that pet food companies allowing non-human grade ingredients in pet food, was widespread. FDA oversite of pet food companies is very lax. My two cats main diet is raw ground beef. Once a week a tin of sardines. I will be removing all canned food as soon as I can. Pun indended.

    I put my dog on hill's 3.5+ years ago at 12 for arthritis... He just died one week ago. He loved the flavor and I didn't have much problem of him tiring of it. He was completely healthy while eating it. And I am certain this food extended his life span. TMI for some of you, but he has the PERFECT poop 💩 for the last 3.5 years while on this diet. Hill’s is a great base food imo because of how much has gone into formulation. I think of it like a meal bar for humans or whatnot. I like to feed my pets as much fresh food as possible (about 50% right now as I am poor) but I can count on Hill’s to fill any nutritional gaps. I wouldn’t feed 100% processed food unless there was a good reason (sometimes sick animals need such precise nutrient balances the safest and most digestible option is just gonna be one of these sorts of foods tbh), but theres no reason to completely demonize them either. They have their use and place.

      Bladder stones feed your dog vinegar with any meal a few times a week or lime juice omg. Crazy people think hills does anything different. Yeah, it's more of an authorization than prescription. Both of my pets that were on super expensive veterinary diets ended up dead from the diets, instead of the problems they were on the veterinary diet foods for, one Hill's, one Royal Canin. Other pets I had with similar problems lived out their full lives on regular diets. So, never again!

      it fixes the symptoms most of the time, and not the underlying issue. A lot of the differences in "prescription" pet foods can also occur in specifically formulated fresh food meals for their animals. Most people do not have the time or money for this. So comes products like Hills, Royal Canin, Purina etc. Also these dry kibbles are difficult for cats and dogs to process; this puts even more strain on the digestive system that may already not be healthy.

    "That's what the perscription is for.", touts the tech.
    I followed, saying, "No, I mean a recipe for fresh food I can make at home.".
    "No. You need to buy the prescription canned food. It has all the vitamins and supplements that the cat needs."
    "But I can add whatever supplements that are needed."
    The girl looked dumbfounded. (DUH)
    Me, "But what needs to change in the diet to help with the uti?"

      wet food in most brand on the market is %80 water, because animals that base their diet on meat do not usually drink as much water in nature, most of the water they consume comes from their food. Cats and dogs drink water continuously because we get them used to eating dry food without water. I don't know if your animal is a dog or cat, but it is much better to give a cat wet food ( or homemade food), especially if it is a male and has problems with bladder obstructions. Now about the other ingredients, I couldn't tell you if they are good or bad.

      Typically it’s high fiber and low calorie food. When I was feeding my cat Hills perfect weight she was pooping 2-3x as often from all the fiber.

      You should really look into how many calories your pet needs in a day and compare it to the food you are feeding. As pet parents it is our responsibility to learn these things. Feeding a bag of cancer causing food because it says "weightloss" is, not a good enough reason. My dog is on a fresh/raw food diet and I never worry about his weight because I know what calories he needs in a day and the caloric value of every treat and meal.

      Hill's adds substances like L-carnitine. This is vitamin-like substance that transports fatty acids into the mitochondria for metabolism and energy production. This means that the mitochondria (powerhouse of the cell and supplier of energy) works more efficiently and less free radicals (stuff damaging the cell) is made. So your pets uses fat stores easier which explains the weight loss! High fiber (increases satiety), lower calories and quality ingredients also play a role

    Hey! As a veterinary student, I think Hill's is really great based on how scientifically they formulate their food (it involves genes and nutrigenomics - very interesting). I suggest you do more research into how this is done. You can also ask your veterinarian - they will be a able to explain what is the difference between a normal pet food diet and prescription diet. Example: kidney diet should not be given to healthy pets due to too little protein etc... Vets study for 6 years (or more, depending on the country) - it is a very, very difficult course. We would not recommend something that doesn't work or is detrimental to pet health. Yes, suppliers with sub-par ingredients can be an issue, but the main thing is that it is addressed and that the company learnt from it. That they did.

      @oliviabelisle8316 Рік тому +11

      For me, the big issue has to do with actually researching for their research...theres nothing the public can see and their trials as far as I can tell, only test their own foods and mostly in terms of palatability. Nutri-genomics is important to study sure but what about how those nutrients are delivered? Especially moisture in cats...(more on this later). Additionally, the giant vitamin D toxicity recall should be an eye-opener for everyone that even after the melamine crisis and after they claimed on their website that each load was tested, thousands of dogs died. It makes it really hard to trust them. Finally, cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, no vet can deny that. To this day farmers use them to hunt mice/birds/insects (a raw whole prey diet) and they are able to live full lives and procreate (although farm life has many dangers otherwise!) We KNOW the nutritional requirements of cats (they are not mid-evolution to omnivores like dogs). And yet...their "science" apparently tells them that cats should eat a diet thats 40% carbohydrates and 10% moisture or less... its like they are ignoring the physiology of the cat, it makes no sense to me as someone who studied animal nutrition. The Feline Nutrition Foundation is an excellent resource that is unbiased (not associated with a brand of food) created by vets and feline nutritionists. Please tell me why, when we have all this knowledge about feline nutrition do they continue to put already dehydrated and overweight (just examples) cats on dry food... Makes no sense unless they were simply trying to sell (by convincing vets that the "science" (whether its revelant or not) is what makes it worth paying for). I really wish all pet foods were third party tested but we are not their yet. 😅 Also, if you dig more into the research, you will find that protein should only be lowered in the diet in the final stage of kidney disease. feline-nutrition.org/health/species-inappropriate-the-dangers-of-dry-food

      Dogs and cats are quite resilient. Science, not hills trademark "science diet". I mean actual scientific analysis is pointing that a lot of the food we feed are pets are responsible for their health conditions. The cancer rate in dogs is approaching 60%. Perhaps your dog had some additional protective factors like lots of exercise, low stress, minimal chemical exposure, regular vet check ups. None of this takes away that Hills dog food is a terrible food and that the company is responsible for the death of so many animals, whether directly through poisoning or shortening their life span.....so uh good try to you. Lets all put out thinking caps on.

    People commenting “well my dogs on it and healthy” so what? That proves nothing. I gave my dog hills her entire life and she was relatively healthy. Still, doesn’t change the objective facts. Dogs have had a huge increase in cancer and they’re not living as long so you cant say it’s because they’re just living longer than they used to. The rise in cancer started when we started feeding kibble. Sorry people but kibble is the issue. Some are okay but even the best brands should be fed with kibble toppers. Hills has poor ingredients and just because it’s keeping your pets alive doesn’t mean it’s good for them. You could feed a person microwaveable dinners their entire life and keep them alive to an average lifespan. Doesn’t mean it didn’t have an impact on their health and overall longevity.
