"This is Mr Teddy..I'll probably take him to Bed with me tonight, I don't usually, but I will tonight"... that was a genius bit of writing that was, most people missed that, but I didn't, it told you all you needed to know really... she was terrified, ... but she was so lonely and desperate to wrench some sort of pride, affection and love from her hapless unloving parents she was willing to put her life in peril for it... it was a very funny sketch but subtly laced with a story of an unloved lonely young girl... Victoria Wood was like that, she could make you laugh and tear your heart out both at the same time... she was a Genius...and now she's gone, just like "Our Chrissie"...so sadly missed😢
Everything else she does is amazing, but this is too sad to be funny. I mean, at the end, there's an 'Annie' poster in her empty room, and at the start she said she wanted to be in Annie. It made me cry.
On an emotional level, it was autobiographical. As attested to in her authorised biography "Let's do it" and by many who knew her, Victoria and her siblings were terribly neglected by their parents, it seems particularly her mother. As a result, Victoria's work is littered with neglectful parents, particularly neglectful mothers: e.g. Petula in Dinner Ladies, the mother in Pat and Margaret, who had to have the two daughters put in care.
This was very funny & very heartbreaking, which is an incredibly tricky thing to get right. Such a treat during lockdown to find all her sketches & shows. (And the Patricia Routledge 'Kitty' sketches that Victoria wrote for her : priceless, every line a snort aloud).
And suddenly, after so many laughs, that amazingly touching moment. Vic could do that so well. And there's a the awful unspoken sadness at the end. Bless you Vic. I always loved you.
I always think this is so sad but brill I love this sketch I like the pathos she puts in her work especially dinnerladies one minute your laughing the next you want to cry
OMG! She has to be the funniest UK comic in the last 40 years. Such a genius. I can't wait to read the new authorised biography of her by Jasper Rees "Let's Do It". Out today. Watching from London.
This is such a tragedy. Think about it: she's always wanted to swim the Channel (to get as far away from her parents as possible). She like's Bonnie Tyler (because she, herself, needs a hero). And she wanted to be in 'Annie' (because that's where she felt she belonged). How awful! Victoria wrote this so well, but I don't know if my analysis is right... I'll do double prayers tonight anyway.
absolutely, she was such a writing genius she left many paths you could take with this sketch, I took it to mean that she felt so lonely and detached she was prepared to risk her life just to wrench a scrap of love, affection and pride from her awful parents, who didn't even remember they also had other children, or where they where. Victoria Wood could make you laugh and tear your heart at the same time.. Genius, so sadly missed.
'an audience with' Victoria wood was the first time I'd seen her. I laughed all the way through especially the Melanie parts and the song yauld to Barry song. comic genius in all aspects. genuinely gutted she's passed but thankful for the laughs.
I went to School with a very Famous Chanel swimming, i alway's think of Alison Streeter, when i see this. btw Alison, well bloody done girl., R.I.P. Victoria, we have lost the funnest Lady in British Comedy, Heven's just got more fun!
This is funny but also very tragic. Victoria was a genius she could make us laugh but in this sketch we laugh and at the same time we know why Chrissie is doing this. She knows how this will end for her and it's tragic
the song by Breaking Benjamin - angles fall is played on a similar looking beach about a similar story, don't know if it is the same story, you all may know more than I do, what do you think???

This moved me so my h I wrote a poem loosely based on it...amazing pathos puts genius xx
Thank you Victoria for all the laughs and the tears. I love you thank you for making my teenage years bearable. Rest in peace genius
RIP Victoria, this never failed to make me smile.
"I don't do French, I do woodwork". One of the funniest lines ever.
One of her absolute best sketches.
The theme of childhood neglect ran throughout much of Victoria Wood's work, reflecting the neglect she'd experienced herself from her own parents.
I was one of the schoolgirls in the beginning of this😂ty for uploading it Ive wanted to watch it for years😇😁
It's nice that she will still make people laugh years after she's gone.
Devastating news what an absolute star .... RIP Miss Wood xx
The pathos runs deep with this one. And I love the family awkwardness. That, I excel at...
+Steve Jones she played this one well steering the emotion's one way then springing the ending that is both uncomfortable and thought provoking.
@@stacey1961reflecting her own childhood neglect, sadly. Her work is full of neglectful parents as a result (Pat & Margaret, Dinner Ladies etc.)

she was very good at bringing a character to life. really natural and believable. rip.
Victoria was very game indeed to do the swimming and brave the sea. Top marks for honesty and entertainment
victoria your brilliant at writing and performing. I enjoy all your work. thank you for making me laugh and cry xxx
I'll do double prayers tonight, anyway.
And suddenly, after so many laughs, that amazingly touching moment. Vic could do that so well. And there's a the awful unspoken sadness at the end.
Bless you Vic. I always loved you.
Such a wonderful lady and astounding talent. You are missed😢 x
RIP Victoria, you were taken too soon :-(
I always think this is so sad but brill I love this sketch I like the pathos she puts in her work especially dinnerladies one minute your laughing the next you want to cry
bitter-sweet comedy, it's what Victoria Wood does best. Brilliant. I love the swim hat in gym class.

Saddest thing I ever heard
this sketch is an oxymoron - tragic but very funny.
Good old Victoria always makes me laugh
Just brilliant. Genius comedy. So gr8 to see this again after so many years. VW love your work!
My favourite sketch by the wonderful Victoria Wood
Its a stop all the clocks moment R.I.P. Victoria Wood comic genius X

This is great British humour

I think your analysis is pretty spot on. I don't think the girl survives either

I don't do french, i do woodwork - classic.
So amazing, but so dark. I still sometimes wake up in the night and wonder what happened to Chrissie.
I think we all know
I went to School with a very Famous Chanel swimming, i alway's think of Alison Streeter, when i see this. btw Alison, well bloody done girl., R.I.P. Victoria, we have lost the funnest Lady in British Comedy, Heven's just got more fun!
Brilliant as always!
R.i.p Ron Pember
Chrissies Dad
Swin the channel
Happy memories! Even back then, Victoria was a comic genius.
Full of pathos. Victoria was a wonderful writer & actor. So sad she was taken too soon.
That double look after 'I'll do double prayers tonight' ...genius.....sadly missed
She knows what's gonna happen
@Catherine3234 This was one of the very first things I ever saw Victoria Wood in and I've loved her ever since!!
This all the more sad for being rooted in the truth of her childhood
such a comedy genius r.i.p. Victoria sweetheart gone far to soon
The epitome of bittersweet.
Double prayers breaks my heart.
love love love her......join Victoria Wood as seen on Facebook group....best laughs every day
RIP Ron x
@transmissionends64 I just watched a programmer about her on BBC 2 last night and saw them talking about this. Its hilarious, thankyou.
I so miss miss wood xx 😘
The hat. It's all about the hat.
This is my bear, Mr Teddy. I'll probably take him to bed with me tonight
another great going, RIP
great swimcap
Tears. RIP VW
Rip Victoria wood! Xx
I’ve never really laughed at this one. Maybe it’s me but I just feel it’s really sad 🥺
Well then... That was depressing.
Pure talent. She got to the top because she was funny, unlike most comedians today.
What do you mean??
This is funny but also very tragic. Victoria was a genius she could make us laugh but in this sketch we laugh and at the same time we know why Chrissie is doing this. She knows how this will end for her and it's tragic
Brilliant lol
the song by Breaking Benjamin - angles fall is played on a similar looking beach about a similar story, don't know if it is the same story, you all may know more than I do, what do you think???
somebody find me the bag she goes into the sea with
The best thing about this is that’s clearly nowhere near Dover.
Correct. All the filmed sketches for series one were shot in and around Norwich, so that would have been the North Sea.
So so dark 😂
I love Victoria Wood but this sketch always made me sad... it was a bit weird
Fucking Trending box
ded
i never thought any of her stuff was funny
I don't do french, i do woodwork - classic.
