It may be a parody, but Victoria Wood did this with a lot of love for the original film. The original 'Brief Encounter' film location, a station tea room at Carnforth in Lancashire, is now a popular visitor attraction and museum dedicated to recreating the film location set. The film has been voted one of the best British films ever made and was written by Noel Coward. It was apparently filmed at this location to be away from the German bombing in Southern England.
It's a cloudy Saturday afternoon, and I'm watching Brief Encounter on TV. Which reminded me of Victoria's parody, so I had to track it down and watch it again. Victoria Wood is so missed. comedy is not the same without her.
This is perfection. Such a wonderful parody of Brief Encounter. The mince pie in the eye is perfection. Such terribly sad news today. Victoria Wood taken so early. Remarkable career of extraordinarily talented woman. A real visionary.
Aw that was hilarious!!! Brief Encounter is my favourite film and this is the first parody I've seen - too funny!!! Their voices and mannerisms are so spot on! Well cast too! - WOW!
Did you ever see the Parody of "Carol" with Kate McKinnon of the US Comedy Show Saturday Night Live. She did it at The Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the audience loved it. Cate Blanchett (Carol) was crying with laughter and Rooney Mara (Therese) and Todd Haynes (The Director) Loved it. I loved Brief Encounter. Also if you saw the "Original" it reminds me of Carol. The Couple are talking and The Lady's "Friend" interrupts them, and in Carol Therese and Carol are talking and Therese's Friend Jack interrupts them.
Have you seen this Brief encounter in colour Albert & Myrtle scenes : ua-cam.com/video/mPk-vJ03XOo/v-deo.html This is the whole film in colour too : ua-cam.com/video/ZodYgLgcd2E/v-deo.html
I just watched Brief Encounters the other day for the first time. This is such a funny parody. "It's just she can be rather vicious, and she takes drugs" hahaha
Joe Bugersthorpe, hahahaha. Absolutely adore this piece. Very few artistes can carry off such a parody of a classic and well loved film without causing offense ...... but darling Victoria pulled it off with her inimitable flair. " I keep a tin of Orange Peeko for the middle classes ".
This is definitely her funniest sketch, RIP, still hard to believe that she's gone so soon :/ "somehow I missed my mouth altogether and put it straight in my eye"
+MissCrane Yes even the thought of the line is enough to make me wheeze. That and all the others. For me it was like she could take the most ''edge of reason'' thoughts a person might ever have or didn't even know they could have, put them down on paper and have them made into scenes that can make a person weep with laughter.
I so love the film Brief Encounter and this is so funny and clever.I don't believe Victoria has gone ,she made me laugh for years.,precious star ,RIP.xx
When Christmas comes around and I have my first mince pie of the season I always think of this sketch... "It'd been so long since I'd had a mince pie, I guess I'd forgotten how to eat it. I picked it up and put it straight in my eye " 😂
@@roryboytube I think she says 'Banburies' - short for 'Banbury cakes'. They're a sort of cake/pastry containing currants, etc (a bit like Eccles cakes).
To think that they could have had a whole series of these old Brit film send-ups. I hope someone else has a go. Step forward Victoria's pal, Julie Walter's.
Not Michael Parkinson, but the ever-superb Duncan Preston playing Stanley Holloway in the original film of Brief Encounter. DP plays him as "standard yorkshireman 628B", for which read "Michael Parkinson". This is one of the GREAT parodies of classic cinema. The whole feel of thew film is absolutely 100%
One of Victoria's cleverest, funniest and heartwarming sketches. A beautiful parody of Brief Encounter. So here's a nod to her from her huge gay following who will miss her - she was like 'family'.
@bootsamou I agree- I'm not a big fan of romantic movies, but I really like Brief Encounter. The last 5 minutes are so heart wrenching, that they didnt get to even say goodbye to one another. And not because of a cataclysmic event, but just because the wrong person arrived at the wrong time- felt very realistic, to me, at least/ and I was born in the 80's!
Watched this several times now ~ the mince pie bit still has me absolutely wetting myself ~ and I keep finding new things like "Shall I hit you over the head with a carp?". Brilliant.
I don't know the name of the other actress but she sure reminds me of Ellen Corby in this skit. What a perfect parody of Brief Encounter. Beautifully staged.
“It was so silly, how it started. I went to Wilverton to change my book and buy a coconut” I am dead 😂😂😂😂😂
The actress who plays the lady behind the counter is absolutely perfect. Well, they all are but she stands out.
"Those who don't ask don't win no parsnips, that's for sure"
I love the Tea Room attendant - so funny + the clipped accent!

and the hat!
Lots of love, haha...
RIP, Ms. Wood. How heart breaking to lose you at such a young age.
Love the old fashioned poshness. We seem to have gone to the other extreme now. Another classic.
So frightfully touching

I love the film Brief Encounter, but this is a brilliant parody, truly wonderful.
dean carter I agree. I bet even Celia Johnson would’ve enjoyed this 😃
Shame it's in "narrow-vision".

@@kitchen6756 wow ☺️ thanks so much!
Great parody. You really need to have a respect for the original to be able to pull off a clever parody.
I just watched Brief Encounters the other day for the first time. This is such a funny parody. "It's just she can be rather vicious, and she takes drugs" hahaha
"I can't believe I'm showing my gusset in a refreshment room" !!
"I have a nice tin of Orange pekoe I keep for the middle classes' Platinum standard", I love Victoria Wood and her whole entourage
Victoria, you are sorely missed. RIP and thankyou for all the laughter.
This was from Victoria's 2000 Christmas special, which to me was the pinnacle of her career. That Christmas special I remember was just superb.
I always keep someorange-pekoe for the middle classes
This is my very favourite clip of all Victoria's work, classic humour and brilliant parody. RIP Ms Wood
This is definitely her funniest sketch, RIP, still hard to believe that she's gone so soon :/ "somehow I missed my mouth altogether and put it straight in my eye"

Brilliant script and delivery! Hilarious and so clever from Victoria. She is so missed. RIP. xx
totally brilliant excellent acting the set the script the accents really captures the tone of thw wonderfully evocative original movie
I so love the film Brief Encounter and this is so funny and clever.I don't believe Victoria has gone ,she made me laugh for years.,precious star ,RIP.xx
"My wife takes drugs.... It's my fault... I brought them home for a joke! " Classic line!
Actually it’s “she can be rather vicious and she takes drugs. It’s my fault I’m afraid, I brought them home for a joke.”
Victoria was a genius. Sadly missed.
the line about his wife being vicious when she's taken drugs made me literally lol , ha ha ha!
Victoria Wood has left an enormous Legacy of Laughter. Thank you Victoria. I will be forever Grateful. Thoughts to Family & Friends.
Rest in peace., lovely Victoria! We miss you so...
Briliant. Must have been such fun to film. Every British rail station cafe should be like this. RIP Victoria xx
Well--they're just as run-down. They think the war's still on, except the prices are 4,000 % higher.
What a piece of work...sheer lunacy. Brilliant!!
This is absolutely brilliant...Seen Brief Encounter many times...
When Christmas comes around and I have my first mince pie of the season I always think of this sketch... "It'd been so long since I'd had a mince pie, I guess I'd forgotten how to eat it. I picked it up and put it straight in my eye " 😂
Brilliant! Most needful laugh to cheer me from the maudlin reverie into which I sank watching the original film.
at this level, comedy becomes art. damn they are good, brits really rule Humour
Life is going to be so dull now? you made me laugh so much and yet i am so sad to loose you rip victoria and thank you.
I must order my coconut tomorrow!
"Fancy is as fancy does!"
The Joyce Carey take off is brilliant
That mince pie made us laugh and laugh.
Fantastically British!!
An absolutely superb parody
Glorious!! :)
This is a hysterical parody of Brief Encounter! Thanks for sharing this!
This was on TV yesterday (23 Dec 2010). Absolutely brilliant, had to watch it again!
What can I say? Brilliant! Have made my own Brief Encounter Parody! Love the received pronounciation!
Pure Genius!! Gone too soon. Thank you wonderful Victoria Wood. R.I.P.
Great!! Love the mince pie bit!!
Yes ~ DO check out the original film ~ it is fantastic ~ so moving.
Love this one sooo much love the original too x
So amazingly accurate, with a
brilliant touch of humour. RIP Victoria. An amazing talent.
just fantastic.. the old trout behind the counter steals the whole thing!.
I think this is so enjoyable to laugh at because there is zero humour in A Brief Encounter. Love it.
There are some cracking humourous lines in the original. "I hope the fire kicks off in a few minutes"...."Perhaps the wood was damp"
Are you kidding?
"Oh look my bramberries are all over the floor !"
(The cafe lady)
@@roryboytube Even in the script, the movie "Flames of Passion" followed immediately by the pram advert! Hahah

So funny. Hadn't seen this one before. A wonderful talent cut short :(
To think that they could have had a whole series of these old Brit film send-ups. I hope someone else has a go. Step forward Victoria's pal, Julie Walter's.
Absolutely brilliant parody.
fab.
Thank you for posting
The measure of Victoria's genius for me is that, even with the jokes, I found this far more moving than the original. I miss her.
Bloody brilliant
it's like the film is a parody of this sketch, but 'mince pie in the eye' gives it away.
This is SUCH a perfect parody.
This is so funny. Only watched Brief Encouner the other nite so it's still fresh in my mind. Great film but a great parody here too!
simply superb. but you have to have seen the film, of course.
The tea lady is excellent; she's the funniest one of this sketch.................
Oh Joe Buggersthorpe!
Fantastic! I will miss her humor
THE LADY BEHIND THE COUNTER WAS THE REAL LOVE STORY AS SHE GOT A DATE WITH THE BUS DRIVER.
this is great!
i love this
I love Brief encounter. love the parody.
One of Victoria's cleverest, funniest and heartwarming sketches. A beautiful parody of Brief Encounter. So here's a nod to her from her huge gay following who will miss her - she was like 'family'.
+Insatiabear I agree with you regarding the quality of this piece and the accompanying sentiments, beautifully put.
What a travesty to ridicule Brief Encounter like this but oh, so enjoyable!Absolutely love it. Well done all and RIP Victoria.
Victoria Wood's greatest moment. Done with such affection and admiration for Brief Encounter. A fantastic and hilarious parody!
@@hemmay ... Not so much ridicule, more a gentle p-take.
But still superb.
Is that Rachinda Carey behind the county? A wonderful actress, she played the Duchess in an episode of Dinner Ladies.
I don't know but it was a Carey who played the part in the 1945 film.
Joyce
Richenda Carey. She played rep at Bristol Old Vic in the 70s.
Great , i love it xxxxx
love it TFS
Brilliant !
This is brilliant......I love the original...!!

You do know that she said cup? Celia Imrie’s accent makes it sound like carp!
Better than the original--much funnier, and only 4 minutes long. That left me time for another cuppa and mince pie.
yes
the fellow who plays the part of the doctor, played the part of the hangman in the final let him have it
Some folks look at this scene and compare it to Carol where Carol Aird & Therese Belivet were talking and her Friend Jack interupts them. 😅😊
Hahaha genius!
brilliant
Sadly it was a "Brief Encounter" - R.I.P. dear Victoria
Good one
A Sad loss.
It's Bill Paterson!
Brilliant
Don't you just hate it when you accidently show your gusset in a refreshment room?
I'd rather enjoy a gander at a gusset along with a pekoe and a mince or macaroon.
@ajraymond1 Certainly is! Great British comedy! Long live Victoria! Wood that is!
I was totally influenced by Brief Encounter when I fimed 'Years Between' A Seaford Story I left out the dialogue, This one is so funny
Parky as Joe Buggersthorpe😂
Who is that playing Joyce Cary's part?
I don't know the name of the other actress but she sure reminds me of Ellen Corby in this skit.
What a perfect parody of Brief Encounter. Beautifully staged.
"Good thump with a basin that's my tip".
This isn't from "Victoria Wood As Seen On TV" - it's from Wood's Christmas sketch show special ("With All The Trimmings"), shown in December 2000.
Classic trumps classic
Goodness, I happened to stumble onto this clip and it's absolutely brilliant - when was it made?
Watch the movie - it's great!
