I love this era of Simple Minds. I do not begrudge their success, but the loss of Derek Forbes and later Mick McNeill had a significant impact on the band.
Yes! Derek Forbes knew how to fill and add something unique to the big SM soundscape. The material after their departure is always missing "something". It takes special musicians to write and perform in that manner. Andy Summers comes to mind.
Yeah, true sadly. It was 85 before I was old enough to go & see them on the Once upon a time tour at NEC, I did enjoy it but the magic was gone & within weeks after that I’d moved on from SM for good. Empires & Dance, Sons & Fascination, Sister Feelings Call & New Gold Dream are all still all-time faves for me. I’d have loved to have seen them 81/82. I saw U2 at Elland road in 87 & that was the last time I ever went to a Stadium gig or bought a U2 album, shite, it’s not my thing at all (although the Fall & Pretenders were great).
Derek, Mel, and Mic were the ultimate trio to Burchill and Kerr during the 80s. These 3 gentlemen had represented the coolest sounds and effects. The 80s were awesome because if bands like this. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Carlos García Bartual absolutely -they were always a great band and this line up defined their sound. Mel Gaynor gave them the great punch and depth to their rhythm section✌️😎Great days of the Eighties
As a teenager I got New Gold Dream - What a classic album - Loved Simple Minds at that time - I used to dress like them and do the dance moves down the local disco - I totally loved the look and the Jim Kerr dance moves.
Wow, the days when keyboard players used to play their parts and also when they used to edit the sound themselves during their performances 2:47! Almost every time the magic comes to the synths, it's the Oberheim OBXa or that wonderful string synth machine.
Beautiful! thanks for the upload. Good old Pinkpop! no big screens, no big light show, no smoke machines, no mobile phones, just a band a lots of people having fun! I love it! I saw them some time after in the Bernabeu in Madrid. Fantastic band!
@@jezza10181 I saw them at Roundhay Park in Leeds on the 89 tour - they played 3 1/2 hours, and that was after 4 support bands - 60 to 70k people in the crowd - was truly epic day.
Bono told me when they recorded BOY in the studio U2 wanted to send it to the moon like Buzzcocks (I just happened to be wearing a Buzz t-shirt when I ran into him and asked him what he thought)

Bands were so good back then they had to be able to play they didn't have all the auto-tune and pro tools and digital this and digital that you had to be able to play and that was the bottom line that's why all these bands have strong songs that stood the test of time and that are still strong today and the bands of today are complete garbage because everything they do is fake for the most part, how many fans since like 2000 have put out songs that are still iconic like this?!!! I can't think of any to be honest. Was sad though when Derrick Forbes (bass player) left he was an intrigle part of their sound and one of the main co writers, I think the keyboard player left not long after he did.
Does he have a good voice though? Can he actually sing? I've always been a fan of SM but I've been listening to them quite a lot recently and my sense is that actually, he can't. The first song in this concert is a case in point. But Book of Brilliant Things is another example of how he sort of shouts his way through everything.
Didn't really notice Simple Minds at the time. I was 11 in '83 and Doug E Fresh was more my thing. The f**k was I thinking? 😆. Great band, great voice, great enduring songs...Simple Minds, not Doug E Fresh 😉

Absolutely agree.. Their Bass and keyboards were the foundation of the wonderful early stuff and that creativity went out the door when they left...

Derek and Mick defined the sound of the band. All the songs originated from one of those two.

I saw them the same year in Dublin SFX hall and I became a drummer 41 years later and still playing. Forbes and Gaynor, what a section.

The only lineup🥳
Nah - big shout out to the drummers Brian McGee (1977-81) and Kenny Hyslop (1981-1982) before Jim and Charlie decided top ten was the way to go. 🥺
@@suz5862 - Mike Ogletree was in there briefly too. For the early sound, I liked Brian McGee.

Simple Minds stayed with me in all my youth. Never forget guys.

What an absolute beast he was. So signature with his basslines
Superbe. J'adore Derek forbes. Très belles musiques

Gone are those days. Now, these "artists" don't even write their own songs, much less play them.
Huh? And who does write the songs? The big great automatic composer?

At this point, with Mick and Derek, they were a magnificent band.

Simple minds the best live band i have ever seen!
Me too, to this day seeing Simple Minds in 1989 was the best live performance I have ever seen. And i have seen hundreds of bands.
@@jezza10181 I saw them at Roundhay Park in Leeds on the 89 tour - they played 3 1/2 hours, and that was after 4 support bands - 60 to 70k people in the crowd - was truly epic day.
Ha SM, seen them over a dozen times, started way back early eighties, best live band ever, never grows old this music❤
Simple minds music walks with me everyday
Bono said; “We were just trying to sound like Simple Minds”
Bono told me when they recorded BOY in the studio U2 wanted to send it to the moon like Buzzcocks (I just happened to be wearing a Buzz t-shirt when I ran into him and asked him what he thought)
I was there, the Torhout/Werchter 1983 festival, with The Eurythmics, Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel and U2...
Me too! Great times and memories!!
That was the lineup!!
That was around the corner where I live, but I was only 10 yo🥲😅 - still had to find out about this then already brilliant band!
Light years ahead of U2 at this time
look at 10:22, Bono copied that pose for their Joshua tree tour years later....
Mick seems to play the OBXa more than the Jupiter-8. He still has his original monophonic synth with him, too... the Korg 770.
A set of good choices either way. Jup 8 my favorite though.

Senza dubbio una delle migliori band anni 80 eccezionali musica coinvolgente e cantante con talento da vendere irripetibili

for me pre "don´t you" minds were the best, after that they´ve lost their magic a bit, but were still one of the greatest bands of the eighties.
I was there! Thanks for this post.
Never seen Charlie & Mike on the stage right before……?!…..Timeless performance……Brilliant memories….Gives me chills….x

There are countless artists today with quite as much talent as "back then". You just have to look.

Dang that bass
Proper band.
Go to 10:22 and you see how Bono got his moves.....
Mel was one the best drummers in the 80s and he is so underrated. I rather have him in the bend over Collins.
And then Reni from Stone Roses came along and blew me all away ✌️
Agree, great drummer. Were there any songs where he doesn't play 16ths on the hi-hat?
what a bass player
Hey, I expected the show to start with "Love Song", but all we get is the synth intro.
yes in the Radio Broadcast of this concert you can hear the whole version of Love Song and many others!
Jim get the bhoys back together again and rule the world.
Lol. Jim is nowhere near what he once was. Those days are well and truly over.

Four different synthesizers: Roland Jupiter 4 and 8, Korg 770, Oberheim OBXa.
Derek Forbes on bass Jesus nobody was near him Pino Palladino tried
Someone somewhere just proves it
Mick Karn would like a word
But too late for that 😉 I look at Pino and mark king as awesome. For me Derek has a different rhythm all brilliant
They just got sadily towatds stadium shallow crap from 1985 onwards!

he didn't, he was thrown out for not turning up for rehearsals
