I still don't understand why Rings of Power chose to give so many of the elves short hair. The long, flowing hair was part of what made them look so ethereal in Peter Jackson's films.
I'm not sure what year it was, but the 1977(?) version had "The Beatles" hair style for all the hobbits. Perhaps it comes from the same seed of thought.. + I don't think they particularly cared what the books told.. they wanted their own version.. a trademark of sorts. All speculation, though.

The elves are immortal and eternal. They are basically gods. They talk in riddles and don't understand how mortals see the world. In The Rings of Power, they are basically just humans with pointy ears
they are very far from being gods. Elves are only immortal in the sense that they don't age after reaching adulthood and can't succumb to disease. They have a different perspective on life than the other mortal races, but they are not so far removed that they cannot comprehend it. Even the Valar and Maiar weren't gods, but they were much closer to that description than the elves were. No one worshipped the elves. You have invented a fantasy surrounding the lore of this series and are upset your fantasy doesnt actually line up with someone else's adaptation.

Elves are not "basically gods to humans." Humans don't worship the elves, not in the slightest. The elves are still of the earthly races. The closest you get are cults worshipping Morgoth and Sauron but again, they aren't elves, they're Ainur. I get that you're trying to say because the elven lifespan is incomprehensible to a human then that would make the human view the elf as "basically a god" but that just is not a sentiment reflected in any of Tolkien's actual works as far as I am aware. If I come off as sounding harsh it's because I'm so tired of people acting like they know what they're talking about when they havent a clue
I used to think Orlando Bloom was cast because he has a pretty face. PoR makes me realize not everyone can look like an elf, Orlando Bloom has that elegant, grace, and elvish aura. He absolutely nail the Silvan Elf role.

This is accurate and more like how they are in the texts. The elves barely participate in the LOTR and it is written from the perspective of Frodo and Bilbo. They are otherworldly to them. Sam wants to see elf magic. Eomer thinks Galadriel is a dangerous witch. So it is fitting that they are portrayed that way in the films. The first and second ages involves the wars of the elves. The texts are written from the perspective of the elves and of numenoreans. They don’t view themselves as otherworldly. They view themselves as normal people. They have struggles and failures. Lots and lots of failures. Elves are not mysterious to other elves or to numenoreans. The way they are in the show is fitting to these stories.
You are comparing "movie [E]lves" to "Amazon [E]lves"? I am gathering you haven't read Tolkien's writings. Do you know what the three Kinslayings are? If you did, you might realize that Elves have "issues."
Jackson's elves are characterised by a stillness. The light diffuses around them and their calm composure gives an world-wise angelic presence. Any movement they do make is fluid, calm and masterful, as that of a being who has lived for a thousand years should.
Also all elves were supposed to look androgynous and show masc and fem features such as all of them having long hair. I rlly can't believe Amazon just went boys have short hair girls have long hair

I'd like to note the elves in the movies act highly formal, regal, and speak with dignity. The problem with RoP is they act too casual and speak in tones that normal humans would in the movies as well. They act too casual and human-like.

The RoP elves act like they're trying to be in game of thrones. Lee Pace (Thranduil) and Orlando actually worked with a movement coach to embody the grace and majestic movement of elves.

The elves feel too human in RoP, but also too stoic and formal in the Jackson films. They're supposed to show many emotions in the book like any other race as well. Elves love singing. They feel great joy and sadness as well. I think the animated LotR film did the most accurate elves. Galadriel isn't reserved and holds back from showing emotions, but she's still graceful and royal in her demeanor
@@riverfilms4548 I think the hobbit suffered mostly because it shouldn’t have been a trilogy. The Hobbit book is only a couple hundred pages, and while Jackson had to cut things out of the Lotr trilogy, he instead had to add so much filler to make the hobbit the “epic” he wanted it to be. But, considering RoP is nothing but useless filler, it’s still leagues above it

It’s actually really incredible Amazon was able to spend the most amount of money in human history on a tv series and still produce some of the worst actors and writers on the planet. This is actually a feat in itself.

LOTR was more progressive with the androgynous hairstyles. So short blue hair is more likely to come from LOTR (if it was in the lore) then ROP (who can't seem to get anything right, not even their own wokeness) lol.
Appearance wise what I find absolutely hilarious is that in Rings of power we see a lot of elves with short human haircuts while in J.R.R Tolkien's books it is mentioned that in elven culture long healthy hair is a sign of beauty and strength in both male and female elves and taking care of their long hair is very important to them.
I love how Aragorn, as a dunedain raised by elves, evidently picked up their calm, contemplative, almost mystical traits, but still possessed the slight vulnerability that makes him human. His juxtaposition against the more emotional and expressive Boromir, who better embodied the spirit of Man, makes for one of the more intriguing relationships of the trilogy. You’ll be hard pressed to find nuances like these in the Amazon series, where differences between races are watered down to mere cosmetics. Aragorn was more elvish than any of the elves on TV.

The elvish in him doesn’t count because his ancestors chose to be mortals. Though, he does have the blood of Numenor in him, which was a bloodline blessed to be greater than other men.

You know something is wrong, when the elves of Amazon are looking more HUMAN than the HUMANS in the Lord of the Rings. The people from Gondor at end of 3rd age looked more elegant than the elves of the first or second age in Amazon which is clearly weird.
THIS - respectfully, I STRUGGLED to discern the elves from the humans. In PJ's Trilogy, if you saw long hair and glowing skin, you knew they were an elf. In RoP, everyone has short hair, and instead of focusing on the story/plot you have to take a moment and look if they have pointy ears to TELL if they were an elf, because that's the only characteristic they possessed of one...
Low life can't portray high life even if you shower that bugmen with all money of the world. It will remain neurotic blabbering mess. Elves are almost eternal they don't care about pitiful routine, their emotions and thoughts are precise and much stronger than human's. But's it's almost unknown concepts for modern writers and directors.

PJ's elves spoke slowly, calmly, elegantly and ethereal. They are full of knowledge, wisdom and sense. Their movements are fluid and once again, ethereal. Their presence commands everybody's attention. Even the nameless elves are good-looking and enchanted. Dirty elves from battle still look a lot better than the Amazon elves.
I just don't understand why the makers of Rings of Power thought turning Elves more "relatable" by making their appearance more mundane and casual was a good idea. Elves SHOULD look ethereal and otherworldly! They SHOULD exude unnatural beauty and elegance that makes them seem almost alien. When I look at Jackson's interpretation of the elves, I immediately get the feeling that I am facing an ageless, knowing creature marked by countless decades of memories. When I look at the elves from Rings of Power, I see Jeff from accounting, who has glued on a pair of pointed ears for Halloween and squeezed into a cheap costume from the bargain bin. I guess the makers of Rings of Power thought this change would make viewers identify more with the elves. They probably also wanted to come across as more "progressive". But they missed the mark by so much that it's almost ridiculous. When I am told a story about elves, dwarves or other fantasy characters, I WANT them to be fantasy characters whose appearance, behaviour and thinking are different from ours. If these beings present and behave exactly like you and me, then they could just as easily have been normal people.
You’re 100% correct. The same argument can be made for Galadriel, who they turned into a brat. This isn’t in keeping with the elves at all. That’s not what their race is about. Man acts rashly, elves have forever and their characters resemble that perfectly in LOTR.

If the decision was "make it authentic" vs "get the viewers we think we want", they'll only choose latter when the former got us the original LOTR I can understand wanting to please the audience but if you pretend it won't get published you'll think "OH well then I'd do THIS" and chances are it'll be better
It's because elves are a different species, and the woke culture hates the idea of races and wants everything to be the same, hence, their elves are just regular people with pointy ears.
I think the biggest drawback is that you don’t get that feeling of mysticism from the elves of Amazon. Clearly the image they are showing is closer to a human than an elf.
Elves were always more mystic, connected to super natural, to magic and more spiritual beings than humans. There were reasons why I won´t watch this series and now after this video I am 100% I won´t watch it, lol.

Sprawling landscapes and pretty visuals do not make a good high fantasy series about brotherhood, camaraderie and doing whats right. ive seen so many scenes that completely butchered chracters, established motifs, and literally just writing coming out of an English 101 first week level of skill that its embrassing. Show is a slap in the face for all lotr fans, and show watchers as well.
Noticing a lot from this comparison. The elves in Peter Jackson don't talk much and when they do it's really straight to the point. Most of their speech is narration over a scene. They move methodically and keep an auraof mystery. They feel incredibly deliberate in general. In the Amazon version, the elves feel clumsy children bichering with each other.
It seems, like Amazon have not even watched the three orginal Lotr films, when they failed so bad in potraying Elronds charchter. Elrond is strong elf swordsman fighter and not some clumsy beta male nice guy which girl with stupid personality needs to always say how things should be done.
The Quenya word for the elves is “Quendi” which literally means “speakers”. The whole point of the elves is that they like talking. Making elves silent completely misses the whole point of Tolkien’s legendarium.
The problem with serial elves is not even that they look more like people, but how they behave. Even the creators of the anime "Frieren" showed very well who elves are. Calm and detached, who do not notice the difference between days and decades.
I love Cate’s Galadriel where she speaks with this slow, deep, authoritative voice yet gentle at the same time. Makes you want to listen and doesn’t sound like someone is nagging you.
That's kind of how I envisioned Melian speaking to her (and Elwe/Thingol as well) during her time in Doriath. Being a Maia that stayed behind in Middle Earth, she assumed a guardian role and nurtured the elves under her protection. However, she was also the queen and had to maintain a regal demeanor to inspire her kingdom.

Give her a buncha thousand years. I don’t say that I necessarily like where they’re going with her character in RoP, but as much as you would have loved the fan service, it would be ridiculous if she were the same person here and there. It would be bad writing. Elves are slow burners, but not static.
If you pay attention you’ll notice that LotR elves are _very_ minimal in their facial expressions. They barely even blink. It gives the impression they’ve been carved from marble, and it’s one reason why they feel ageless and inhuman. The Rings of Powers elves on the other hand behave and emote nearly identically to a normal person. Their biggest indicator is the pointy ears.
Now that u mention it, they really don’t have any dramatic facial expressions. But they’re still able to convey strong emotions that the audience can easily pick up on. That’s true acting right there
That’s why the Amazon elves hair is short. The only way to tell is their ears. But PJs elves are identifiable by mannerisms and more than just appearance.

Liv Tyler as Arwen is one of most perfect casting decisions in all of cinema, imo. I think even Prof. Tolkien, were he to appear out of the Halls of Mandos, would think "yea, that's an Elven Princess; she is Lúthien born again".

But yea, as beautiful as I do think Thurman is (she's also a fantastic actress), I always imagined Tolkien's Elves as having very soft and delicate features, and Liv Tyler fits that description perfectly; and also that angelic voice of her's which complements the Quenya and Sindarin languages beautifully. I actually think Uma would have been perfect as Eowyn (but, of course, I'm already attached to Mirando Otto in that role)
Funny thing is, despite her wanting to play Arwen, she didn't have much of a chance of actually being casted, because she fears horses. But to counter this, she learned the elven language, which almost noone achieved before, thus persuading them to cast her anyway.
In the Jackson Trilogy / Tolkien books elves are ageless creatures of ethereal beauty and grace. It is so fitting for them to speak in that flowing, mysterious voice of a race that carries so much wisdom and knowledge about the workings of the world. In Amazon series elves are treated as some eccentric human nobility, but no more than that. They're practically indistinguishable from human characters in anything but pointed ears. I do not understand why didn't they give them that elegant long hair - it would've made them so much more elf-like.
I think this also makes the entire RoP show much less “epic” and fantastical than Jackson’s trilogy. The “races” of the Lotr trilogy are supposed to be different mythical creatures than humans, and having them act so similar to humans completely downplays all of the conflicts that separated the races originally. Why would there be Grimli complaining about “losing to an elf” if they were all basically humans? Why would each of the races hesitate to work together if they are all the same? They all have different goals, wants, and cultures- so that’s also why it’s so great when they finally come together against a common foe. There’s so many things wrong with RoP that you could probably write an essay about it

One could speculate that their magic is infact, some sort of advanced quantum physics manipulation. Yeah, ignoring all the flaws in the writing, pacing, lore, etc, I was most disappointed with what they did to the elves. Arondir (?) was the only one who had a handsome face - now if they gave him longer hair and some nice armor, he would make a great elf! All the others were so damn... average looking, with weird modern short hair cuts. Don't even get me started on how Galadriel behaved nothing like the age-old elf she's supposed to be. Yikes. We (I) don't want to see "relatable" elves, I want to see them as the immortal, wise, powerful beings they are.
People always use the excuse that they’re all “young” in RoP therefore hair hasn’t grown long yet, but as someone who’s grown up in a Polynesian household that’s not how long hair works…your family simply don’t cut it from infancy and it is long from childhood ie: they’d have long hair their entire lives!! In Tolkien's writings, the Elves are also treacherous, conniving, arrogant, and vicious. They mass-murder their own kin three times. It's tough to display "ethereal beauty and grace" when you're wading ankle-deep in the blood of your kin. I have lots of qualms and criticisms about Amazon's show, but let's not pretend that Peter Jackson is somehow true to the writings. Remember, Christopher Tolkien *hated* Peter Jackson's LotR films. Would Amazon have been more true if it had Galadriel surfing down stairs on a shield like Legolas?
Jackson's elves have grace and wisdom. Their hair is long and flowing, both men and women. The way they speak is soft but firm and deadly. Elves are half-angel creatures.
And not only that, on their armor they have that face with a lot of detail that sticks on the outside, how is that practical in any way? Their capes can get stuck on that not to mention I don't understand the meaning that face with leaves around has, it reminds me of some Greek deity, nothing to do with actual Elves and their history or customs.
Elrond not being allowed into the "Elf Lords only" meeting was so mind-numbingly stupid. Elrond is as royal as you can get. He is descended from Finwe, Elwe, Malach (Hador), and a freaking Maia. Not to mention his father is basically Elf Jesus.
I totally agree with this. One argument for this is that at that time he didn't actually rule over any land, therefore wasn't an elf lord. But that's just stupid. He would be the next high king of the Noldor.
@@misterp4865 Exactly! Elrond was of a more legendary line than Gil-Galad, Círdan (though that's because he is one of the oldest elves ever), or even Thranduil. Galadriel's is debatably up there, but Elrond is of an absolutely insane bloodline. Plus, he is one of the most powerful Elves Middle Earth ever produced and one of the wisest. He, more than anyone, would be welcomed into just about any meeting for any race. What . . . the . . . fuck Amazon?

The difference between ROP and LOTR is that Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh were actually LOTR super fans. They spent 9 years writing and in preproduction for LOTR, before they ever even had a studio funding them. It was a passion project, where they were extremely aware of how globally loved Tolkiens work was and they wanted to do the screen adaptation the most accurate to Tolkien’s work as they could. From sets, to costumes, Casting, writing, etc everything was done to try and bring Tolkien’s world to life. ROP was produced by a mega corporation that mass creates material goods for profit. The showrunners have probably never read Tolkien and like so many other IP’s they created a show that was centered around western identity politics and associated it with Tolkiens work hoping the built in fanbase for the IP would blindly consume it. ROP is pretty much like if Morgoth decided to rewrite Tolkiens work.
You wrote exactly what I was thinking. I read the book "Peter Jackson: The Making of Middle Earth" and have watched numerous videous on how they made the movies. During the making of the movies everyone was invoved in the process, even the actors, they rewrote the script every single day to make it closer to Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth. I have a huge amount of respect for PJ and his entire team, THEY BOW TO NO ONE! 🙂
The most striking thing to me when watching this comparasion is the creative choices with the lighting and color scheme. Peter Jackson's movies portray the elves with cold tones where the elves glow in a white light everytime they walk into a shot. The lack of warm colors make them feel dangerous, powerful, yet still an allay against the darkness that consumes the bakground. The palette is so distinct that you'll be able to tell Jackson's movies from Amazons even if everything was blurred out. Amazon clearly went a more mainstream and safer route, going for warmer tones and palletes. But I think they underestimated how much the color schemes aided in telling the audience in how to interpret the elves and middle earth. Excuse my ranting, I just found this really interesting while watching this.
And it actually fits so well with Tolkien's lore. His elves are linked with the stars and starlight, as well as silver. Choosing cool light was the perfect choice. It's also why it's so stupid that Gil Galad in RoP is adorned in gold instead of silver.
Even just hearing the LOTR soundtrack gives me the shivers. Jackson's work is perfect and meticulous in every detail because it was done with passion. Amazon's, on the other hand, is just to make money by exploiting a famous title. But they failed in that too
Rings of Power turned the Hobbit Trilogy from a decent, albeit flawed, movie series into a masterpiece, and the LOTR one from a masterpiece into a bloody godsent miracle!

In Rings of Power the elves had none of the grace or poise that Jackson's films or Tolkien's books portrayed them with. Galadriel was already 5,000 years old in Rings of Power and they have her acting like a ridiculous angsty teenager. Elves were always ethereal and literally otherworldly. In Rings of Power they're so... ordinary?
It doesn't help that none of the men had long hair in the Amazon version. I think that is a big part of why the elves in Rings of Power do not look ethereal at all.
The best part of the books was when the elves discovered the electric shaver and could buzz cut each others hair. Such a pivotal moment in the lotr history.
I find it really interesting that in the Jackson movies, even the younger elves such as Tauriel or Legolas carry that very distinct "Elvish air/loftiness" (don't really know how to describe it). The problem with the ROP elves is the amazon showrunners' approach to "show things how they are in our modern times"or such rubbish. Elves are not just humans with pointy ears stuck on, period.
Taurial actress did an amazing job portraying a "wild" elf that still had that ethereal quality. Something like that would fit so well with the fighter character they wanted for young galadriel. Somehow it's just not even close.
Heck, I think it was mentioned in The Hobbit production that Tauriel was only about 500 years old, even far younger than Legolas. She was young and rebellious, defied her king's order, yet still her topmost quality was her sense of compassion and love, something the already 5000 years old ROP galadriel severely lacks. I had my frowns with the insertion of Tauriel in The Hobbit film, but damn, at least I can accept and actually root for her given her qualities.
@@wolffweber7019 Yeah, the books never mention pointy ears, but in one of his letters he mentions that hobbit ears are "only slightly pointed and elvish". On the other hand, Turin is taken to be an elf-lord in the Silmarillion, which probably wouldn't happen if human ears were different. Ultimately, whichever way you lean I don't think it's a hill to die on.
If only the Tolkien estate gave Peter Jackson the respect he deserves for how he brought Tolkien’s world to life instead of being treated like a leper. Seriously no one has done more for the Tolkien estate than Peter Jackson in the last 60+ years and they act like he shat on his grave. That’s how you get the Rings of Power that was pretty much mandated to be far removed from Jackson’s films.
I will say that it was my grandmother who introduced me to The Lord of The Rings through Peter Jackson's films when I was a kid. I wouldn't have known of the books if it weren't for her. I mean, if I were to meet anyone in the Tolkien estate, I'd probably explain that among other things. I mean, I discovered Tolkien through the films and I'm a huge fan. Tolkien's the only author that's ever came close to being my inspiration for taking up writing
Not a 1:1 comparison but makes me think of how SW fans treated Lucas for the prequels, so he sold up and Disney made the sequels. Suddenly everyone begging for Lucas again lol.
This is why intellectual property shouldn't be passed down to descendants, but rather to everyone, that way we would have several iterations of Tolkien's works, instead of big soulless corporations like Amazon, HBO, and Netflix being the only ones able to afford and vie for the rights.
PJ elves look like Tolkien elves while Amazon elves look like Santa's helpers. Hugo's Elrond was a freaking badass and Cate's Galadriel was otherworldly. That's what you get when you blend the right acting with the right direction.

And nowhere are Elves portrayed as "ethereal". Tolkien Elves are very emotional, far from the aloof and almost emotionless Vulcans shown in Jackson's movies. They laugh, they get angry, they cry, they feast, they dance, they sing, they joke and tease, they drink wine and get drunk. They also can be haughty, prideful and prejudiced. Like Sam says, some are as merry as children and others are severe as great lords. I would even say Jackson did a rather poor job at depicting the Elves.
I know everyone talks about Galadriel and rightfully so. But still, I cannot comprehend how they managed to butcher Elrond so much. Hugo Weaving was pretty much perfect in his role.
It strikes me as strange that Galadriel is Elronds mother-in-law and one of the oldest people in Middle Earth yet they portray her as a moody teenager. Devoid of wisdom or gravitas. Why would they do that?

The way the Peter Jackson elves conducted themselves was elegant and graceful, something completely different from humans, the amazon version is just humans with odd looking ears.
Galadriel in the movies has this... I don't know how to put this, but she has this gaze that seems somewhat off. Like she's gazing literally at the audience instead of the characters. It gives her this almost uncanny, spirit-beyond-this-world look. There's a slight unease---almost like her glowing beauty puts the audience in a trance not to look away. Her movement is also very minimal. It's like a spirit taking an earthly form for the convenience of those she's talking to. It's otherworldly and slightly unsettling in the best sense of those words. You actually get the impression that she is ethereal and beyond the physical world. Goes to show that you can give a great deal of character by using merely subtle visuals without billions of dollars. Her still movement also breathes power more than the show. She doesn't need a sword when merely her gaze and the flicker of her arm is eough to expel evil.

It’s also because feminists hate femininity and see as a weakness and conformity to male expectations. Therefore the only strong characters you get are the ones that act like men. I think it's also part of their goal to reflect a "modern society" because (sarcasticly) *of course* LOTR is made to reflect the modern world. I am surprised we didn't have more pixie cuts and lumo hair.
There are stark differences but the one that bothered me the most right away was their attire and short curly hair in ROP, it makes them look like they are all Greek or something. Even Galadriel had curly/wavy hair, which isn’t what was described in the book when she gives a strand to Gimli. They speak quickly and fumble over their words using a lot of emotion in ROP, in LOTR they speak so slowly and so little and even their facial expressions remain calm, the emotion comes from their eyes and thoughts. In ROP they over explain EVERYTHING to one another, while in LOTR they simply understand one another with a change of the eyes or a slight tilt of the head and maybe only a short few words if any. The ‘wise’ quotes from ROP were so damn stupid, “a stone is always looking down” wtf does that even mean!? Whereas the quotes from LOTR were masterfully written, they could be broken down and mulled over many times and still get you drifting away in thought. In the books, elves were observant and knew much without having to ask, they were wary, and somewhat untrusting and dangerous yet calm, wise and kind. I never saw a single elf exude any of these characteristics in ROP, people like to say “they change, their style changes too, this was a long time ago”, they don’t change that much, I mean in ROP Galadriel is thousands of years old and acts like a mean, arrogant, teenager who is rash and quick to anger and very selfish (nothing like described in the books). Elrond is thousands of years old and acts like a buffoon, who can’t really think objectively which is completely opposite as described. The book and a LoTR elves cared a lot about conserving and maintaining their way of life, another reason I don’t think they change much over time.
One of the things that bothered me since the first moment that elves were on screen in RoP was the fact that they didn't sound right. Galadriel's brother changed accent 3 times in his introduction scene. In fact, nobody sounds right, the hobbits, the elves, the humans...because everybody is talking in the same way. In the trilogy the races were using different accents, but it wasn't just the accent, it was the mannerisms too. Also, there's the issue with the hairstyles (I had the urge to offer Galadriel from RoP a hairbrush), Celebrimbor being old, the missing Celeborn, the butchering of the lore....
not to mention that in ROP they do not speak any elvish ;-; or at least not as far as i got before i dropped it because it was so bad(like ep 3 i dropped it)

I dont think it was casting though. An actor shouldn't be to blame when the script portrays her childishly and ALL the elves in the show lack the grace and stillness that was in Peter Jackson portrayals. It's director and screenplay at fault to me. Heck she seems like she did exactly what they told her to based on the story and show.

Peter Jackson elves are ageless, with the exception of Elrond but he is an halfelf so it is fitting that he is more human like. Almost all RoP looks like half elves.
amazon's rings of power is a mary sue story. only galadriel is designed as elven like because in those stories the young adult spoiled princess is better than everybody else (specially men) who are portrayed as goofy ugly idiots
It's not even who had "more" love, it's who had ANY love at all, one look at RoP and you can see it's made by someone who despises Tolkien's work. Someone, that didn't even like, but at least respects his work, could've made a show easily 10 times better than what RoP delivered.
They made Galadriel a wildly emotional human with pointed ears. She is supposed to be 2000 years old in the show but acts like a bratty teenager. Also, she’s not supposed to be an elite warrior. This is a totally separate universe from cannon and lore.
Galadriel might or might not have fought on the First Age battles. To be honest this was never specified by Tolkien. We do know that she was over-athletic and she was also eager to come to Middle Earth and face the dangers there. It wouldnt be weird if she did fight in the battles there. Other than that her depiction in the series is not good. Mostly she lacks the wisdom she surely must have gained, the First Age was a fuckfest for all Noldor.
Showrunners said "She's still learning", when she supposed to be 2000 years old. In the hypothetical case that they are right, and Galadriel still learning and that's why she acts as she acts... @@SettePau Arondir is older than that if he was born in Beleriand as I believe he said he was. He was stationed in the Southlands for 70-80 years though. But I agree with you. He seems more rational and less emotional than Galadriel in ROP.
I think part of the issue with the RoP elves is their hair. Almost every one of them has short, stylized hair or pixie cuts to show off their ears. Whereas in LoTR, every single elf had long, flowing hair that added to the ethereal and ancient feeling they radiated. Also, the RoP elves all look dopey as hell.

The first time I watched Lord of the rings I was enthralled by the looks of the elves ( Elrond, Arawen, Legolas, Galadriel, celeborn, Haldir )and even the minor characters.They were so beautiful and then I saw Thranduil (Lee Pace) for the first time. I gawked and gawked cos he was so beautiful and all he did was move his neck in the first scene. He was beautiful and so regal and spoke with so much authority. I kept going back to watch his scenes. I'm probably never going to watch rings of power cos I don't want it to mess up my love for the characters in the books and movies!

I watched the first 2 episodes and was thoroughly disappointed. This galadriel in no way resembles the elegant galadriel from lotr series even a little. She's so overly emotional and childish. I have decided to live in denial that power of rings doesn't even exist 😑
I haven't seen RoP and have no plans to do so at this time. I had seen clips from various episodes and a picture, but I couldn't figure out why the RoP elves irritated me so much. It wasn't their short hair or their less-than-ethereal air, it was their smug smile/look, which I found grating. They've taken a race that's supposed to inspire awe and turned it into, in my opinion, the polar opposite.
It's not uncommon to show elves acting superior to other races. But the difference is base on world building and their skills, you can see why they are so confident. Cause they aren't all talk.

This is like Tales of Berseria." Both have a female lead who lost a loved one, turing her into a the personification of vengeance- also Velvet sees her brother get killed right Infront of her, gets turn into a demon who eats other demons with her arms. And is imprisoned by her brother's murderer for 3 years... She a mortal. At the start. The guy who's eventually Sauron is like Eizen. Except Eizen kind of embraces how his the cause of the suffering to those around him. Making him abit more confident.(except when it comes to his sister) And his eventual change into a dragon. Which are considered the most evil and dangerous beings in this world. And his relationship and interactions with Velvet is pretty similar to Galadriel and Sauron.(Minus the romance, the two are purely platonic) The game even has a similar scene to the boat talk, but it's a symbol on how people view the world, which extends to why they make the choices they do. The question is simple "Why do you think birds fly?" So... Yeah. ROP could have worked. Cause people loved Berseria when they did the scenes that ROP tried to do. And Berseria was made in 2016.

@@Jake-qo3mp I do think they did well with Thranduil’s portrayal in a lot of ways, but yeah they certainly subtracted a lot of the warmth from his character that comes near the end, which could have easily replaced the needless Legolas plot.
The scene with Galadriel's mirror in LOTR was iconic. I don't know what this other movie is but I suppose in this one Sauron won and forced all elves to cut their hair as punishment and act like confused teenagers in rags.

Elves are supposed to have a relaxed, peaceful yet prideful personality as the opposite to the short-tempered, irritable personality of the dwarves. That is supposed to be one of the reasons they don't get along well. Tolkien actually used the word Elf instead of fairy (because he thought the word fairy was already corrupted). Elven spirits are in considerably greater control of their bodies, the reason they don't age, according to Tolkien. (Could be a reason why they don't have kids like rabbits like our grandparents). The thing is THEY ARE NOT HUMANS. You could think of them as aliens. THEY ARE ANOTHER SPECIES. But in Rings of power they show a Galadriel that behave like a teenage Karen. 7.04 I still can’t believe they chose that scene for Galadriel to talk down to Elrond. Elrond, whose father became a star and whose brother fathered everyone living in Numinor. He and his entire family tree has suffered so much, and she should have been very aware of it, not gloating over him with crude knowledge.

Peter's elfs even played their roles differently. They just had that air of holiness and wisdom. They are not just standing emotionless, staring in the distance. Despite maybe coming off as subdue, they showed everything with their eyes. You could feel their pain thorough the screen.
Even the non canon Tauriel from the hobbit felt more elf like, not bratty and that one was supposed to be also young and impulsive. But galadriel here is insufferable.

I'm not even sure it's a good idea to have the elves as the main characters. It completely destroys their mystique. They work best as side characters. You sense that they have a higher knowledge and purpose that you just won't ever understand. RoP's Galadriel is whiny, petulant, shallow minded... very human character but not likeable at all. She's played as a typical angsty YA strong girl
I think you could have them as leads, but you'd have to maintain the mystique in how they carry themselves - their presence. I'm an elf fanatic (at least, of the original LOTR variety), and the more scenes of them in the extended versions didn't diminish any of their power or mystery. You can have a mysterious person as a leader who speaks a lot less and does a lot more, while still managing to communicate their mission to the audience. We even sort of had this with Aragorn - though h's human, but still has the hero mystique surrounding him. He's not super chatty and does a lot of acting and communicating with his eyes. The climbing scene with Galadriel could've been cool if she actually showed care towards her party, and did less talking. I think with Elves, a lot of 'show, don't tell' is important to let the audience see their power and grace. (Sorry for the ramble!)
Elves are no nonesense, they only speak when they have to. And when they do, they do it with full conviction, and grace, and has a tone that commands everyone to listen. They are reserved and do not hurry except when needed, because they are well aware of time and the consequence of action.
They are measured, considered, experienced and wise. They are not easily excitable; they don't babble, they don't fret, they don't panic. They're not petty or insolent; they are neither blundering nor credulous
PJ's Galadriel never raises her voice yet still carries more authority than RoP Galadriel ever did. And you can't say "she was younger/immature". Elves are immortal and ageless.
I mean she does raise her voice when she goes all dark mode. Even then though, she's far more menacing and commands far more power than the RoP version could ever hope to.

Hugo Weaving will always be Elrond to me. I can't imagine him looking like someone else. Kate Blanchet will always be Galadriel to me. The way she portray the character, you understand she's powerful without saying much. She's beautiful and creepy in the same time.

I'm not sure what year it was, but the 1977(?) version had "The Beatles" hair style for all the hobbits. Perhaps it comes from the same seed of thought.. + I don't think they particularly cared what the books told.. they wanted their own version.. a trademark of sorts. All speculation, though.

The elves are immortal and eternal. They are basically gods. They talk in riddles and don't understand how mortals see the world. In The Rings of Power, they are basically just humans with pointy ears

they are very far from being gods. Elves are only immortal in the sense that they don't age after reaching adulthood and can't succumb to disease. They have a different perspective on life than the other mortal races, but they are not so far removed that they cannot comprehend it. Even the Valar and Maiar weren't gods, but they were much closer to that description than the elves were. No one worshipped the elves.

Elves are not "basically gods to humans." Humans don't worship the elves, not in the slightest. The elves are still of the earthly races. The closest you get are cults worshipping Morgoth and Sauron but again, they aren't elves, they're Ainur. I get that you're trying to say because the elven lifespan is incomprehensible to a human then that would make the human view the elf as "basically a god" but that just is not a sentiment reflected in any of Tolkien's actual works as far as I am aware.

This is accurate and more like how they are in the texts. The elves barely participate in the LOTR and it is written from the perspective of Frodo and Bilbo. They are otherworldly to them. Sam wants to see elf magic. Eomer thinks Galadriel is a dangerous witch. So it is fitting that they are portrayed that way in the films.
The first and second ages involves the wars of the elves. The texts are written from the perspective of the elves and of numenoreans. They don’t view themselves as otherworldly. They view themselves as normal people. They have struggles and failures. Lots and lots of failures. Elves are not mysterious to other elves or to numenoreans. The way they are in the show is fitting to these stories.

The elves feel too human in RoP, but also too stoic and formal in the Jackson films. They're supposed to show many emotions in the book like any other race as well. Elves love singing. They feel great joy and sadness as well.
I think the animated LotR film did the most accurate elves. Galadriel isn't reserved and holds back from showing emotions, but she's still graceful and royal in her demeanor

@@riverfilms4548 I think the hobbit suffered mostly because it shouldn’t have been a trilogy. The Hobbit book is only a couple hundred pages, and while Jackson had to cut things out of the Lotr trilogy, he instead had to add so much filler to make the hobbit the “epic” he wanted it to be.

I love how Aragorn, as a dunedain raised by elves, evidently picked up their calm, contemplative, almost mystical traits, but still possessed the slight vulnerability that makes him human. His juxtaposition against the more emotional and expressive Boromir, who better embodied the spirit of Man, makes for one of the more intriguing relationships of the trilogy.
You’ll be hard pressed to find nuances like these in the Amazon series, where differences between races are watered down to mere cosmetics. Aragorn was more elvish than any of the elves on TV.

PJ's elves spoke slowly, calmly, elegantly and ethereal. They are full of knowledge, wisdom and sense. Their movements are fluid and once again, ethereal. Their presence commands everybody's attention. Even the nameless elves are good-looking and enchanted. Dirty elves from battle still look a lot better than the Amazon elves.

I just don't understand why the makers of Rings of Power thought turning Elves more "relatable" by making their appearance more mundane and casual was a good idea. Elves SHOULD look ethereal and otherworldly! They SHOULD exude unnatural beauty and elegance that makes them seem almost alien. When I look at Jackson's interpretation of the elves, I immediately get the feeling that I am facing an ageless, knowing creature marked by countless decades of memories. When I look at the elves from Rings of Power, I see Jeff from accounting, who has glued on a pair of pointed ears for Halloween and squeezed into a cheap costume from the bargain bin.
I guess the makers of Rings of Power thought this change would make viewers identify more with the elves. They probably also wanted to come across as more "progressive". But they missed the mark by so much that it's almost ridiculous. When I am told a story about elves, dwarves or other fantasy characters, I WANT them to be fantasy characters whose appearance, behaviour and thinking are different from ours. If these beings present and behave exactly like you and me, then they could just as easily have been normal people.

I think the biggest drawback is that you don’t get that feeling of mysticism from the elves of Amazon. Clearly the image they are showing is closer to a human than an elf.

The elves in Peter Jackson don't talk much and when they do it's really straight to the point. Most of their speech is narration over a scene. They move methodically and keep an auraof mystery. They feel incredibly deliberate in general.

It seems, like Amazon have not even watched the three orginal Lotr films, when they failed so bad in potraying Elronds charchter. Elrond is strong elf swordsman fighter and not some clumsy beta male nice guy which girl with stupid personality needs to always say how things should be done.

The Quenya word for the elves is “Quendi” which literally means “speakers”. The whole point of the elves is that they like talking.

The problem with serial elves is not even that they look more like people, but how they behave. Even the creators of the anime "Frieren" showed very well who elves are. Calm and detached, who do not notice the difference between days and decades.
I love Cate’s Galadriel where she speaks with this slow, deep, authoritative voice yet gentle at the same time. Makes you want to listen and doesn’t sound like someone is nagging you.

That's kind of how I envisioned Melian speaking to her (and Elwe/Thingol as well) during her time in Doriath. Being a Maia that stayed behind in Middle Earth, she assumed a guardian role and nurtured the elves under her protection. Give her a buncha thousand years. I don’t say that I necessarily like where they’re going with her character in RoP, but as much as you would have loved the fan service, it would be ridiculous if she were the same person here and there. It would be bad writing. Elves are slow burners, but not static.
If you pay attention you’ll notice that LotR elves are _very_ minimal in their facial expressions. They barely even blink. It gives the impression they’ve been carved from marble, and it’s one reason why they feel ageless and inhuman.
The Rings of Powers elves on the other hand behave and emote nearly identically to a normal person. Their biggest indicator is the pointy ears.
Now that u mention it, they really don’t have any dramatic facial expressions. But they’re still able to convey strong emotions that the audience can easily pick up on. That’s true acting right there
Thats because Tolkien's elves are meant to be like this. Stoic, reserved and not throwing tantrums at every minute inconvenience.
That’s why the Amazon elves hair is short. The only way to tell is their ears. But PJs elves are identifiable by mannerisms and more than just appearance.

Liv Tyler as Arwen is one of most perfect casting decisions in all of cinema, imo. I think even Prof. Tolkien, were he to appear out of the Halls of Mandos, would think "yea, that's an Elven Princess; she is Lúthien born again".
Thankfully it wasn't Uma Thurman (who was desired but unavailable). She's great but I can't imagine anyone else playing Arwen.

I actually think Uma would have been perfect as Eowyn (but, of course, I'm already attached to Mirando Otto in that role)
Funny thing is, despite her wanting to play Arwen, she didn't have much of a chance of actually being casted, because she fears horses. But to counter this, she learned the elven language, which almost noone achieved before, thus persuading them to cast her anyway.

In the Jackson Trilogy / Tolkien books elves are ageless creatures of ethereal beauty and grace. It is so fitting for them to speak in that flowing, mysterious voice of a race that carries so much wisdom and knowledge about the workings of the world.
In Amazon series elves are treated as some eccentric human nobility, but no more than that. They're practically indistinguishable from human characters in anything but pointed ears. I do not understand why didn't they give them that elegant long hair - it would've made them so much more elf-like.
I think this also makes the entire RoP show much less “epic” and fantastical than Jackson’s trilogy. The “races” of the Lotr trilogy are supposed to be different mythical creatures than humans, and having them act so similar to humans completely downplays all of the conflicts that separated the races originally.
Why would there be Grimli complaining about “losing to an elf” if they were all basically humans? Why would each of the races hesitate to work together if they are all the same? They all have different goals, wants, and cultures- so that’s also why it’s so great when they finally come together against a common foe.

Yeah, ignoring all the flaws in the writing, pacing, lore, etc, I was most disappointed with what they did to the elves. Arondir (?) was the only one who had a handsome face - now if they gave him longer hair and some nice armor, he would make a great elf! All the others were so damn... average looking, with weird modern short hair cuts. Don't even get me started on how Galadriel behaved nothing like the age-old elf she's supposed to be. Yikes.

In Tolkien's writings, the Elves are also treacherous, conniving, arrogant, and vicious. They mass-murder their own kin three times. It's tough to display "ethereal beauty and grace" when you're wading ankle-deep in the blood of your kin. I have lots of qualms and criticisms about Amazon's show, but let's not pretend that Peter Jackson is somehow true to the writings. Remember, Christopher Tolkien *hated* Peter Jackson's LotR films. Would Amazon have been more true if it had Galadriel surfing down stairs on a shield like Legolas?
Jackson's elves have grace and wisdom. Their hair is long and flowing, both men and women. The way they speak is soft but firm and deadly. Elves are half-angel creatures.

The difference between ROP and LOTR is that Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh were actually LOTR super fans. They spent 9 years writing and in preproduction for LOTR, before they ever even had a studio funding them. It was a passion project, where they were extremely aware of how globally loved Tolkiens work was and they wanted to do the screen adaptation the most accurate to Tolkien’s work as they could. From sets, to costumes,
Casting, writing, etc everything was done to try and bring Tolkien’s world to life. ROP was produced by a mega corporation that mass creates material goods for profit. The showrunners have probably never read Tolkien and like so many other IP’s they created a show that was centered around western identity politics and associated it with Tolkiens work hoping the built in fanbase for the IP would blindly consume it. ROP is pretty much like if Morgoth decided to rewrite Tolkiens work.

You wrote exactly what I was thinking. I read the book "Peter Jackson: The Making of Middle Earth" and have watched numerous videous on how they made the movies. During the making of the movies everyone was invoved in the process, even the actors, they rewrote the script every single day to make it closer to Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth. I have a huge amount of respect for PJ and his entire team, THEY BOW TO NO ONE! 🙂

The most striking thing to me when watching this comparasion is the creative choices with the lighting and color scheme. Peter Jackson's movies portray the elves with cold tones where the elves glow in a white light everytime they walk into a shot. The lack of warm colors make them feel dangerous, powerful, yet still an allay against the darkness that consumes the bakground. The palette is so distinct that you'll be able to tell Jackson's movies from Amazons even if everything was blurred out. Amazon clearly went a more mainstream and safer route, going for warmer tones and palletes. But I think they underestimated how much the color schemes aided in telling the audience in how to interpret the elves and middle earth.

Even just hearing the LOTR soundtrack gives me the shivers. Jackson's work is perfect and meticulous in every detail because it was done with passion. Amazon's, on the other hand, is just to make money by exploiting a famous title. But they failed in that too

In Rings of Power the elves had none of the grace or poise that Jackson's films or Tolkien's books portrayed them with. Galadriel was already 5,000 years old in Rings of Power and they have her acting like a ridiculous angsty teenager. Elves were always ethereal and literally otherworldly. I find it really interesting that in the Jackson movies, even the younger elves such as Tauriel or Legolas carry that very distinct "Elvish air/loftiness" (don't really know how to describe it). The problem with the ROP elves is the amazon showrunners' approach to "show things how they are in our modern times"or such rubbish. Elves are not just humans with pointy ears stuck on, period.
Taurial actress did an amazing job portraying a "wild" elf that still had that ethereal quality. Something like that would fit so well with the fighter character they wanted for young galadriel. Somehow it's just not even close.
Heck, I think it was mentioned in The Hobbit production that Tauriel was only about 500 years old, even far younger than Legolas. She was young and rebellious, defied her king's order, yet still her topmost quality was her sense of compassion and love, something the already 5000 years old ROP galadriel severely lacks. I had my frowns with the insertion of Tauriel in The Hobbit film, but damn, at least I can accept and actually root for her given her qualities.

@@wolffweber7019 Yeah, the books never mention pointy ears, but in one of his letters he mentions that hobbit ears are "only slightly pointed and elvish". On the other hand, Turin is taken to be an elf-lord in the Silmarillion, which probably wouldn't happen if human ears were different. Ultimately, whichever way you lean I don't think it's a hill to die on.

I will say that it was my grandmother who introduced me to The Lord of The Rings through Peter Jackson's films when I was a kid. I wouldn't have known of the books if it weren't for her. I mean, if I were to meet anyone in the Tolkien estate, I'd probably explain that among other things. I mean, I discovered Tolkien through the films and I'm a huge fan. Tolkien's the only author that's ever came close to being my inspiration for taking up writing

PJ elves look like Tolkien elves while Amazon elves look like Santa's helpers. Hugo's Elrond was a freaking badass and Cate's Galadriel was otherworldly. That's what you get when you blend the right acting with the right direction.

And nowhere are Elves portrayed as "ethereal". Tolkien Elves are very emotional, far from the aloof and almost emotionless Vulcans shown in Jackson's movies. They laugh, they get angry, they cry, they feast, they dance, they sing, they joke and tease, they drink wine and get drunk. They also can be haughty, prideful and prejudiced. Like Sam says, some are as merry as children and others are severe as great lords. I would even say Jackson did a rather poor job at depicting the Elves.
I know everyone talks about Galadriel and rightfully so. But still, I cannot comprehend how they managed to butcher Elrond so much. Hugo Weaving was pretty much perfect in his role.

Galadriel in the movies has this... I don't know how to put this, but she has this gaze that seems somewhat off. Like she's gazing literally at the audience instead of the characters. It gives her this almost uncanny, spirit-beyond-this-world look. There's a slight unease---almost like her glowing beauty puts the audience in a trance not to look away.
Her movement is also very minimal. It's like a spirit taking an earthly form for the convenience of those she's talking to. It's otherworldly and slightly unsettling in the best sense of those words. You actually get the impression that she is ethereal and beyond the physical world. Goes to show that you can give a great deal of character by using merely subtle visuals without billions of dollars. Her still movement also breathes power more than the show. She doesn't need a sword when merely her gaze and the flicker of her arm is eough to expel evil.

I wouldn't put The Two Towers or The Return of the King in that same class.
There are stark differences but the one that bothered me the most right away was their attire and short curly hair in ROP, it makes them look like they are all Greek or something. Even Galadriel had curly/wavy hair, which isn’t what was described in the book when she gives a strand to Gimli.
They speak quickly and fumble over their words using a lot of emotion in ROP, in LOTR they speak so slowly and so little and even their facial expressions remain calm, the emotion comes from their eyes and thoughts.
In ROP they over explain EVERYTHING to one another, while in LOTR they simply understand one another with a change of the eyes or a slight tilt of the head and maybe only a short few words if any.
The ‘wise’ quotes from ROP were so damn stupid, “a stone is always looking down” wtf does that even mean!? Whereas the quotes from LOTR were masterfully written, they could be broken down and mulled over many times and still get you drifting away in thought.
In the books, elves were observant and knew much without having to ask, they were wary, and somewhat untrusting and dangerous yet calm, wise and kind.
I never saw a single elf exude any of these characteristics in ROP, people like to say “they change, their style changes too, this was a long time ago”, they don’t change that much, I mean in ROP Galadriel is thousands of years old and acts like a mean, arrogant, teenager who is rash and quick to anger and very selfish (nothing like described in the books). Elrond is thousands of years old and acts like a buffoon, who can’t really think objectively which is completely opposite as described. The book and a LoTR elves cared a lot about conserving and maintaining their way of life, another reason I don’t think they change much over time.

One of the things that bothered me since the first moment that elves were on screen in RoP was the fact that they didn't sound right. Galadriel's brother changed accent 3 times in his introduction scene. In fact, nobody sounds right, the hobbits, the elves, the humans...because everybody is talking in the same way. In the trilogy the races were using different accents, but it wasn't just the accent, it was the mannerisms too. Also, there's the issue with the hairstyles (I had the urge to offer Galadriel from RoP a hairbrush), Celebrimbor being old, the missing Celeborn, the butchering of the lore....
My friends and I were like, why do the elves look like politicians? One friend was like, “Elves are not supposed to look like Ben Sasse.”

I dont think it was casting though. An actor shouldn't be to blame when the script portrays her childishly and ALL the elves in the show lack the grace and stillness that was in Peter Jackson portrayals. It's director and screenplay at fault to me. Heck she seems like she did exactly what they told her to based on the story and show.

It's not even who had "more" love, it's who had ANY love at all, one look at RoP and you can see it's made by someone who despises Tolkien's work. Someone, that didn't even like, but at least respects his work, could've made a show easily 10 times better than what RoP delivered.
They made Galadriel a wildly emotional human with pointed ears. She is supposed to be 2000 years old in the show but acts like a bratty teenager. Also, she’s not supposed to be an elite warrior. This is a totally separate universe from cannon and lore.
Galadriel might or might not have fought on the First Age battles. To be honest this was never specified by Tolkien. We do know that she was over-athletic and she was also eager to come to Middle Earth and face the dangers there. It wouldnt be weird if she did fight in the battles there. Other than that her depiction in the series is not good. Mostly she lacks the wisdom she surely must have gained, the First Age was a fuckfest for all Noldor.

I think part of the issue with the RoP elves is their hair. Almost every one of them has short, stylized hair or pixie cuts to show off their ears. Whereas in LoTR, every single elf had long, flowing hair that added to the ethereal and ancient feeling they radiated. Also, the RoP elves all look dopey as hell.

The first time I watched Lord of the rings I was enthralled by the looks of the elves ( Elrond, Arawen, Legolas, Galadriel, celeborn, Haldir )and even the minor characters.They were so beautiful and then I saw Thranduil (Lee Pace) for the first time. I gawked and gawked cos he was so beautiful and all he did was move his neck in the first scene. He was beautiful and so regal and spoke with so much authority. I kept going back to watch his scenes.
I'm probably never going to watch rings of power cos I don't want it to mess up my love for the characters in the books and movies!

I haven't seen RoP and have no plans to do so at this time. I had seen clips from various episodes and a picture, but I couldn't figure out why the RoP elves irritated me so much. It wasn't their short hair or their less-than-ethereal air, it was their smug smile/look, which I found grating. They've taken a race that's supposed to inspire awe and turned it into, in my opinion, the polar opposite.

And is imprisoned by her brother's murderer for 3 years... She a mortal. At the start.
The guy who's eventually Sauron is like Eizen. Except Eizen kind of embraces how his the cause of the suffering to those around him. Making him abit more confident.(except when it comes to his sister) And his eventual change into a dragon. Which are considered the most evil and dangerous beings in this world.
And his relationship and interactions with Velvet is pretty similar to Galadriel and Sauron.(Minus the romance, the two are purely platonic)
The game even has a similar scene to the boat talk, but it's a symbol on how people view the world, which extends to why they make the choices they do. The question is simple "Why do you think birds fly?"
So... Yeah. ROP could have worked. Cause people loved Berseria when they did the scenes that ROP tried to do.

Elves are supposed to have a relaxed, peaceful yet prideful personality as the opposite to the short-tempered, irritable personality of the dwarves. That is supposed to be one of the reasons they don't get along well.
Tolkien actually used the word Elf instead of fairy (because he thought the word fairy was already corrupted).

Peter's elfs even played their roles differently. They just had that air of holiness and wisdom. They are not just standing emotionless, staring in the distance. Despite maybe coming off as subdue, they showed everything with their eyes. You could feel their pain thorough the screen.

I'm not even sure it's a good idea to have the elves as the main characters. It completely destroys their mystique. They work best as side characters. You sense that they have a higher knowledge and purpose that you just won't ever understand. RoP's Galadriel is whiny, petulant, shallow minded... very human character but not likeable at all. She's played as a typical angsty YA strong girl

I agree mostly, yet I would still love a mini series about the fall of gondolin or Feanor and his sons.
I think you could have them as leads, but you'd have to maintain the mystique in how they carry themselves - their presence. I'm an elf fanatic (at least, of the original LOTR variety), and the more scenes of them in the extended versions didn't diminish any of their power or mystery. You can have a mysterious person as a leader who speaks a lot less and does a lot more, while still managing to communicate their mission to the audience. We even sort of had this with Aragorn - though h's human, but still has the hero mystique surrounding him. He's not super chatty and does a lot of acting and communicating with his eyes. The climbing scene with Galadriel could've been cool if she actually showed care towards her party, and did less talking. I think with Elves, a lot of 'show, don't tell' is important to let the audience see their power and grace. (Sorry for the ramble!)

Elves are no nonesense, they only speak when they have to. And when they do, they do it with full conviction, and grace, and has a tone that commands everyone to listen. They are reserved and do not hurry except when needed, because they are well aware of time and the consequence of action.
They are measured, considered, experienced and wise. They are not easily excitable; they don't babble, they don't fret, they don't panic. They're not petty or insolent; they are neither blundering nor credulous
PJ's Galadriel never raises her voice yet still carries more authority than RoP Galadriel ever did. And you can't say "she was younger/immature". Elves are immortal and ageless.
I mean she does raise her voice when she goes all dark mode. Even then though, she's far more menacing and commands far more power than the RoP version could ever hope to.
