if you get a 987.1 (06-08) watch out for IMS and bore scoring (for the S model), otherwise get a 987.2 if you are able to, and are able to find one
Yeah, the only reason the Cayman doesn't outperform the 911 is because Porsche doesn't want it to.

@@luvbikes2012 To my knowledge the Cayman GT4 RS will have the same powertrain as the 911 GT3 RS, just detuned. The Cayman is smaller and lighter. All it's gonna take is to retune it to the output of the GT3 RS.

The early ones are a little meh stock but some of the later ones look pretty good. Still, it's a cheaper Porsche with a mid engine setup. There's plenty to love there.

Just bought mine a few weeks ago and I promise you it is the best driving experience BY FAR. It is so planted, sounds amazing, is very fast above 4k rpm, and when you want it to slide around its like sliding a car in forza. Such a good buy. THe prices for 987's and above are starting to climb fast tho, for good reason!

Rewatching this video years later after picking up a Caymn base PDK 987.2 and I can confidently say it's an amazing car. You definitely don't need the S model first of all. I daily drive mine and it has all the storage you need (I even fit 2 carry on suitcases in it). I've had the priviledge of driving a few supercars (488 GTB, 720s, Huracan) and this is the closest feeling to a supercar you can get for the price. 1000% recommend getting on if your budget allows!
I have a 987.1 Cayman S I got about 3 months ago and can confirm after tracking it about 3 times, the S would be the way to go because of the higher oil capacity. It seems to be a problem with the Caymans and for very hard driving the more oil the better. I’m going to even get a larger oil pan with baffles to make sure I don’t spin a bearing
What's wrong with the base model? I've got it and I'm happy with the power, has the same handling as the S, and even more reliable (for 987.1 and 987.2). Bores don't score with the .1 base and the shift cables have a dramatically lower chance of snapping than the .1 S or .2 S

I actually bought my Cayman GTS AFTER owning a 911. Was looking at a 991.2 when I drove the 981 GTS... and bought it on the spot. These little cars are amazing.

981 S/GTS is still to this day one of the best sounding cars under 100k ever made.
This confirms it. I'm buying a Cayman S. I was going to cheap out, and pick up a base model, but it seems pointless, especally considering how well they hold their value. I appreciate the nod to the dual clutch automatic because that was probably my biggest concern. If I can't find a low to mid mileage manual, I'll gladly go with the auto. I love the feel of a solid manual transmission though.

Almost every mechanic including porshce professionals hate working on caymans, engine bay prob the smallest space ever known to man.
You sacrifice easy maintainence for a midship engine.
Mechanic never had a problem on mine 😂. You can either access the top, behind the seat, or just go underneath. Everything is pretty easy to access

I own a 987.2 cayman s (pdk) and I absolutely love it. You CAN get them for between $25-30,000, but trust me, if you can't afford the step up in price to get one in nicer condition (I got mine for $45,000) then you can't afford the car. Its no joke that any repairs done are 10x the price of any normal car. I had my high pressure fuel pump go on me, and it was $1100 for the pump itself, and over $5000 after labour cause they needed to pull the damn engine and transmission out to replace it. Amazing car, totally worth it, but holy shit are they pricey to maintain
Rear engine rear wheel drive is definitely what makes Porsche so unique, the late breaking into turns makes them track monsters.
I don't mean to sound argumentative, but the Cayman is a mid engine car, which is even better.
*My heart says Cayman, but my wallet says 2000’s Boxster S.*
The 986 Boxsters aren't as reliable. An early 987 Cayman will outperform the Boxster S and be cheaper in the long run

Own a modified gen 1 Cayman for the past 5 years. Absolutely love it and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a brilliant all round sports car.
Maintenence is straightforward, reliability is good if they have been used and not just garaged, and now there is a great aftermarket scene growing for them.
Market currently has them sitting at a great price point too.
Just be aware buying and modifying one will upset the purists that haven't quite realised the ownership demographic is changing!!
I have a cayman base and love it , I had a 911 before, the cayman is a great car for a daily driver

I would probably go for the Cayman S, all things considered. It’s an engine you could rev out on public roads without losing your license. That means more engagement and more fun.

Re-watching this video again, and i just realized that I've never actually gotten any real flak from people about it "only being a cayman". I've taken it to car meets, car shows, etc, and the only person who ever seemed to have that "well its not a real porsche" attitude was a 2nd uncle of mine that has a 996 911 carrera (ge never actually said that to my face, but he had that sort of vibe going on when talking to him before he saw the car in person). But, after he actually saw the car first hand, he realized that it arguably looks better than most 911's and DEFINITELY looks better than his 996 😂. Also, after a quick drive in it, he realized it was also faster since mine has a very *slight* tune and some mods on it and his 996 was the crappy automatic. But in terms of other people, never been looked down on for it. A lot of people who know about the car even prefer it.

An frs would be a good first car. The problem with a g35 is if you want one in mint or decent condition you’re going to have to spend over 7k ( at least where I live ). At that point you might as well save up a bit more and get a g37. Also if you end up getting the g35 and not the sedan.... the sedan is ugly imo

You want the 2nd version 987. The 987.2 fixes some of the issues with the first.
Love my stock. Cayman s with sports. Chrono. That sport button makes it a razor sharp naturally aspirated fun time. Very underrated. It’s a treat to Hoon on backroads.

I'm a JDM guy, I own an FK8 type r. But nobody makes cars quite like Porsche. I love them, Porsche is my favourite brand, I'd kill for a GT4 or a GT3/GT3RS or hell even a GT2RS. If you give me a button and tell me that if I push it 1 million people die but I get a GT3RS I wouldn't even think twice.

You said 3rd generation but I think meant to say second generation cayman (987.2) which comes with a 2.9 and a 3.4, not a 2.7

Both great cars. I’ve had a go in both of them. E92 m3 is way faster. But the way the cayman goes is so satisfying. And the one I went in had an after market exhaust that really brought The whole car alive. Given the choice. I’d have the cayman. Especially for running costs. Although the v8 is insane

As a 981 S owner I will say if you want a car that everyone drools over any where you go without breaking the bank (sorta) that is the car you want. And to take it a step further if you opt to drop about another 10k on a GT4 front bumper, carbon diffuser, carbon ducktail, and carbon air ducts people look at the car like it’s a 150k vehicle. Next will be an R8 but it’s a great introduction to the car world.

my friend got a turbo s recently and he is like whats the point its not as fun to drive as the mid engine porsches as soon as you put your foot down even a little the turbo s is already at 100 mph with out any of that noise and fun you get from the lower hp mid engine cars

First I also thought that the cayman was the poor man's Porsche. My dad has a cayman gts 981 and I changed my mind completely. The sound of that car is so much better than a 991, 991.2 or 992. Secretly I also like the looks more because of the mid engine layout. More people turn their head's when they see it. So when you're driving it makes it a bit more special:) the only Porsche 911 I would take over a cayman 981 is a 991 or 991.2 gt3 because of that amazing sound and redline.
