Definitely not my proudest moment, but I'll share to emphasize the point. I finally saved up enough for a 1st gen Genesis Coupe 3.8. Got it and drove it home, and it was the fastest car I'd ever driven. First RWD car as well. It was the first car that I had bought with my own money rather than sharing a parents car. I decided to take it out on a back road I had nearby, and I was choosing to ignore my nearly bald tires that I bought it with. I got going around a turn, and the back end slipped out on a little patch of dirt that had blown on the road. Being inexperienced, I did what someone who has only driven FWD would do to correct it. I put that pedal on the ground. Jumped a curb and sideswiped a fire extinguisher. Car was totaled the day I bought it. (luckily I got a decent check from it and was able to go and buy a MazdaSpeed 3 which has been great). Go to a parking lot and LEARN HOW YOUR CAR HANDLES. It's a horrible feeling to see your car destroyed as you sit there waiting to be picked up by a friend.

    Rookie mistakes:
Don't add power until you've added brakes.
Don't add power until you've added traction.
Don't add power until you have mastered the stock powerplant.
Watch Initial D. Takumi is the man because he overcomes the lack of power, not because he has tons of power.
Understand the difference between a car with an LSD and without. Know what you have. Looking at you 335i owners.
Understand that smooth steering wheel motions make for a less upset car.
Understand that losing traction should not cause you to immediately put on the brakes.
Knowing understeer vs. oversteer and how you can achieve them using acceleration/braking/steering. Go find an empty parking lot and learn.
Expect your driveline to be designed for stock power, so once you start adding power expect everything around you to break.

Take your car to a long straight by yourself and test your car launches. Learn how it handles first, with/out traction control, then test it’s cornering, how it breaks loose, what rpms to launch, how your tires stick. Don’t just send it thinking you can handle it. Baby steps first.
Don’t turn your car platform into a meme. (Mustang community)
Oh and if you do launch and it starts breaking loose to one side, don’t be an idiot and keep stepping on the gas, let it go gradually until you have grip again.
Same goes for braking. Don’t stomp on the brakes at high speeds, tap on it until you have a descent. You could lock your pads.
    Happy sending.

I remember in high school I had a 1997 Mustang GT. It wasn't very powerful, it only had around 220HP. However, I took time to learn how the car handled. I added fatter tires and better brake pads and rotors before I touched anything else on the car.
In comparison, I had friends with E36 M3s and 3000GT VR4 and Eclipse GTXs and 300ZXs etc. all of which were faster than me on paper and they always struggled to keep up with me. My buddy with the 3000GT VR4 used to tell people "put artsohc in any car and it immediately gains 100HP".
Power is nothing without the ability to utilize it correctly. There is a reason people in Miata's can smoke people in significantly more powerful cars when on a twisty road/track. It's better to be known as a good driver than as the person with the most power...who eventually puts all that power into a ditch.

Throughout my college years I drove my father's 2005 Toyota Highlander (base stock). A couple years after graduation, I was still sharing the Highlander as a daily with him. It was already on 280k miles.
Figured I should get my first car. Saved up a bit. Had the choice between a new common car (Altima , corrolla, etc) or give a good search for a used car within the budget. I have little knowledge about cars, good thing got UA-cam!
After a driven search for 2 weeks, I locked my vision for a specific 2002 Jaguar XKR in Aspen Green Mica with 9,680 miles. Beautiful. All the way out in Santa Barbara.
The whole buying experience of the XKR is another story in itself. A months ordeal; tears shed upon doubt. Mostly financial hurdles.
-> bought the car & shipped it to NY. My friends and family were concerned that I didn't fly over to check the car in person.
My mechanic did a full inspection and said "the car is in great condition, the only thing you need to keep an eye out is the next oil change." Wow, what a relief.
It's now been 7 months and words cannot explain the amount of fun & thrill I have driving this car. It's my first car! I even picked up interior/exterior detailing as a hobby. The places I've driven to with my dog, the amazing people I've met, the late night drives for thought, even the friendly strangers that admires. I believe I made the right choice.
To think how different my life will be right now had I settled for new.

I’ve got a c63 now and I handle the counter steering and everything perfectly now, it’s all just natural now, it just happens and I learned in a 2011 Camry drifting around in the snow. I know completely different cars, fwd vs rwd and like 170 hp 4 cyl to a 450 hp v8 but when I turn traction off and do a launch I can actually control my car and I completely credit that to beating the camrys e brake into the ground. Lose traction in snow...no problem. When and if I have a kid I’ll be taking him to lots and quiet side streets to learn because when they lose traction I want them to be ready for it.

Something I never have to worry about anyone telling me... Do a burnout. I drive a Honda Fit. XD Haha street cred zero.
And then I eat your Mustang. >.>

Showing off is a fool's idea of glory, so don't feel bad. At least you smoke Mustangs

My brother has a first gen Jazz, he has been told to do burnouts at meets and he stuns the crowd every single fucking time he does one. Goes from laughter as the tires start spinning to cheering as he holds it. If people tell you to spin the tires, do it bud, hold it and the crowd will love you for it
