  • A playthrough of Sega's 1994 movie-licensed based platformer for the Sega Master System, Aladdin.
The Master System version was a Europe release, but the US did get the Game Gear version (which is the same game, just on a lower resolution screen).
The 8-bit Sega Aladdin games (developed by Sims) have little in common with the famous 16-bit games based on the film, but it's an impressive piece of work. There's no doubt that this is a HUGE step up over the abysmal NES game (the official one, at least!).
The graphics (especially the animation) and the sound are amazing for a SMS, and it nails the many of the movie's big moments and motifs with a slam dunk. It also seems to be aimed at a younger audience than the other versions - this game is stupidly easy. Not only are the stages themselves simple and quick to get through, but you also have unlimited continues and a password save system. It seems overkill for such a short title, but the game is fun regardless. I do imahine, though, that it would probably been less easy to appreciate if you had paid full price for it new.

Sega's 8-bit Aladdin game may not get the recognition that its 16-bit brother does, but this short, easy game really does perform wonders with the Master System hardware. It's perfect for kids, and it does a great job of capturing the feel of the movie!

Not only does it have parallax scrolling, but it also has pseudo-3D backgrounds similar to Toy Story on the Super Famicom and Mega Drive.

Not bad - definitely way, way better than the official NES version (although the bootleg wasn't too bad). My fav SMS game to this day is still Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap! If I were to make a list of 10 must-play SMS games, this one would definitely be in my top 3. :)

I know this video is 5 years old but I just realized watching it today that this game has 3d in the very first level. On a Master System game.

Yeah this game had a ton of really imaginative design. So many different types of levels (the first two auto-scrollers, then some Prince of Persia platforming, the carpet ride, the Jafar fight), the cutscenes, even the way you have to trick a guard onto a switch in the Palace level. Super advanced for the SMS!

    I just thought of something.
Jafar stole the lamp while Aladdin still had a wish left. Couldn't Jasmine have wished for Aladdin to be a prince again and still have been able to free the Genie?
I mean, not for nothing because this way is better, but still.
