  • A playthrough of Sega's 1991 license-based platformer for the Sega Master System, The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck.
The Lucky Dime Caper was released on the Master System only in PAL territories (Europe and Brazil). It saw a release on the Game Gear in all major territories, including the US.
Released more-or-less concurrently with the fondly-remembered QuackShot Starring Donald Duck for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, this 8-bit outing for Donald was a pretty fair alternative for the people that weren't rocking blast-processing back in 1991. Taking a page from Quackshot's apparent "inspiration" from The Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, The Lucky Dime Caper does much the same with the SMS version of the Castle of Illusion.
It's another Disney-themed platformer that involves wiping out enemies in a fairly non-violent way, loaded with colorful, well-animated sprites and an almost-nauseatingly cheery soundtrack. The gameplay is extremely straight-forward: most levels are the standard walk left-to-right variety, through there are a few stages that have branching paths to add a bit of variety for multiple playthroughs. It's all quite smooth, responsive, and pretty easy, making it perfect for the kids that it was obviously intended for.
More than any other Donald game that I can recall, this one seems to channel DuckTales. There are a lot of similarities to the NES DuckTales game with some of the enemy designs and obstacles thrown at you, not to mention they both feature the same bad guy (Magica de Spell) and most of the same supporting characters (Scrooge McDuck and his three nephews are present and accounted for here).
It's a nice game - it isn't as good as The Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, nor DuckTales for that matter, but it's still quite a well done family-friendly bit of entertainment that looks extremely good for the hardware it's running on.
If only they had added a hard mode for us "big kids"!

Lucky Dime Caper carries Sega's penchant for vibrant, family-friendly Disney titles. I imagine many kids loved this way back, and it still holds up surprisingly well today.

I doubt it, since many kids probably preferred Game Boy.

"Donald Duck" makes a great protagonist in a action/platformer game!! Love how his in-game dialog and animations matches his very frank, tough, "down to earth" personality!!
He sometimes might be a jerk, but it's hard NOT to Love the guy!!^w^
also I could be wrong but, I think "Donald" might have a bigger fan base than his rival "Mickey".. .. ..especially in some countries like "Scandinavia"!!.. .. ..but what do I know?? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just about all of the Disney SMS games were gems, however in my opinion this one is the best

Speaking of Disney games, there's one on SFC I vaguely remember playing a couple of years back, with Mickey making balloons in it... Mickey no Tokyo Disneyland - that one was pretty fun, though it's not exactly the most well-known Disney game out there, as it only came out in Japan. There was also a Donald Duck game like that... I guess Disney must've been pretty popular in Japan as well. :)

+Marius Amber I played the Disneyland game, it was pretty good. Disney, and especially Mickey, is huge there. There are 2 Disney parks in Tokyo alone, with Disneyland and Disney Sea

Just got through stage 4, this games is super tough for me, spent 2 hrs on it so far, it will feel nice to finish this one if possible. I'm so glad videos like yours exist otherwise it would have taken 4 hours lol

Don't ever try and tell me the NES was better than the Master System. The NES has a bigger library of games but the 8 bit graphics of the Master System are great

+MikeyTheMachineGaming Plus, for every game like Mario, Zelda, Contra, Castlevania, Metroid, and Mega Man, there was an LJN game.

Looks like Magica de Spell went all Dr Wily at the end. Why wasn't Unca Scrooge playable? I can't see him not coming along. After all, he'd be putting his trust into Donald and Scrooge would never leave it up to him.

Most likely cause Duck Tales was only on Nintendo Systems...that and maybe Scrooge was just lazy this time around.

Hm, this is running at 60fps speed despite not being released in the US or Japan. I think that's the speed for the Brazilian Master System version (afaik, their PAL just applies to the color system), so I guess it's ethical to just run the European release in 60fps. This also more or less matches the speed of the Game Gear version, which plays very similarly, so the game was never designed or adjusted for 50fps with the European SMS release.
