Guys -- Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who developed Jungian psychology in the first half of the 20th century.12 His theory suggested that archetypes were universal patterns and images that are part of the collective unconscious. Jung believed that we inherit these archetypes much like we inherit instinctive patterns of behavior.3 Jungian psychotherapy is a thorough, analytical approach to talk therapy that seeks to bring balance and union between the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. Jung believed that the unconscious is a source of wisdom and guidance that can help encourage psychological growth.2 He created some of the best-known psychological concepts, including synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex, and extraversion and introversion.4 Jung argued that humans deal with the reality of the shadow in four ways: denial, projection, integration, and transmutation. During individuation, the individual becomes more attentive to dreams, increases their psychic awareness, explores the world of religion and spirituality, and questions the assumptions of societal norms.
The song is about evolving into a higher state of consciousness. As a species we are currently in a chaotic state. We currently have 44 and 2 chromosomes. The reference is to us evolving into a symbiotic state, as a species, with 46 and 2 chromosomes.
46 and 2 chromosome is an ape human chromosome 2 is a fusion of two ape chromosomes plus we have a mutation of the myh 16 gene that removed the large cranial masticatory muscles that apes have and allowed our cranial cavity to expand with a large more specialized brain. we are fucked up apes
Maynard typically has more than 2 meanings for each song he writes, but here it’s generally a reference to Carl Jung, personally growth and challenging yourself, and evolving. Lots of third eye, intuiting, self-reflection stuff.
46&2 represent the next spiritual and physical evolutionary step for humanity. We are currently 44&2 = a disharmonus collective. It refers to our chromosomes that make up our identity. That's why he says .........46&2 are just a head of me. Our new reality consisting of a higher Frequency Vibration Sound and Light is where we are going. Thank you for letting us listen to this with you
Its all in the mix. Most of TOOL's songs seem to place Maynards vocals right in the middle if not the back of the mix. It can be difficult to hear the vocals clearly at first. It is however very much worth it to take the deep dive.
Flawd you're totally not wrong about it almost being rap. His cadences and rhythmic devices are often mentioned as being unique or different but when you recited the lyric about the shadow that was a freaking bar to behold.
Carl Jung theorized that there is a Shadow subconscious and a Light conscious, this is him opening himself to both. 46&2 is a reference to the chromosomal pattern that makes us human.
Tool is a genre in and of itself, and is a journey, an experience, if you will. Please, please, please check out the drum cam video of Danny Carey of the song Pneuma. He is, quite possibly, the best currently living drummer.
Neil Pert, Danny Carey, David Lombardo. Three of the best drummers of my lifetime. Also, Lars Ulrich is very underrated, being in a band of great guitars.
Tool purposely puts the vocal low in the mix to let the music shine and uses his voice as a equal instrument. Tool songs are deep and yes this is reference to Carl Jungs work about integrating your dark side into who you are in the world.
I believe Tool ‘s lyrics are made for IQ200+ …always you need to squees your mind to fit the pieces together to get the whole meaning 🤟🏽 Tool Army from Egypt ❤
The next step of evolution would likely bring about a cosmic conscious where the chromosome count would be 48, or 46 & 2. The songs heavy focus on 'shadow' is derived from Carl Jung's theories. The shadow is basically everything about that is unseen that you are uncomfortable with or hate.
Quick layman explanation of the song (at least my interpretation). First "The Shadow". Very basically, Karl Jung's theorized that our mind was divided in several parts, one being the Shadow, the place where our fears, insecurities and traumas reside. Now, the songs talks about evolution (there are many references to snakes shedding skin) and basically it says that to change, to evolve you have to face your Shadow, acknowledge it, recognize it, assume it and integrate it into who you are. Now, the forty-six & 2 part. Our cells are composed of 46 chromosomes, containing our whole DNA. Those 46 chromosomes are organized in pairings, so 23. Now there is a pairing that is special because it's the one that determine our biological gender, it's the pairing XX for women and XY for men. When a biologist speaks of 44+2 instead of 46, the "+2" refers to that special pairing. So in the song, the narrator says "forty-six & 2" just ahead of me. I don't think it's a direct reference to biological evolution (going from 44+2 to 46+2), but I think he uses this representation of biological evolution as a metaphor for psychological, mental and ethical evolution.
For real! I commented the same thing. Are you aware that the singer, and a few other members in the cover video, later created a band called 'Saving Escape' and they are making current original music? It's good. I suggest you checkout their original song 'Get Mine'. It's pretty freakin' awesome! I can hear the Zeppelin, Tool, and the White Stripes influences and I love it
Vocals are done low on purpose, it’s the shadow. Also, Maynard adds a shadow vowel when he sings shadow. If you notice he adds an a sound to the end of it.
I really like how you guys paid attention to the song. Obviously you never mentioned the band (the drummer in particular). These dudes make masterpieces in music
Dude, I'm so glad you reacted to this song, one of my favorite songs! I HIGHLY suggest that you react to the Video of kids covering this song. They play all the instruments and a young teenage girl crushes the lyrics. They all crush it but the drumming and videography is outstanding. The kids in the video are from a music class. A few of them, including the singer, later formed a band call 'Saving Escape' and they are making original music now, I bought the album. The cover video is posted by O'Keefe Music Foundation and the video name is "Kids Cover 46 and 2 by Tool / O'Keefe Music Foundation".
@pauljeffers1494 I disagree about that. When I was 13, I was drinking, drugging, and having sex (with girls my age). Why would it matter if they understood the lyrics? That's a rediculas statement. You probably barely grasp the lyrics as an adult. Purely ignorant, close-minded train of thought. And you're a Tool fan? Inconceivable!
O'Keefe Music Foundation has a kids covering 46&2and its awesome. I recommend watching it while the original version is fresh in your head. U wont be disappointed!

Not sure why alot of people can’t hear the lyrics/vocals in the main sections of TOOL songs? There are parts of songs where MJK is whispering or speaking the lyrics which can be hard to hear so I get that but the body of the song I hear him clearly and don’t have issues understanding what he’s saying. I believe I have learned how to listen to TOOL songs and I’m used to MJKs vocals blending in as almost another instrument and that’s where I believed people run into issues hearing the vocals that blend so well with the music.
Have a feeling it's already in the works. They're able to pick & choose how something, including children, have better qualities & less issues. People seem to forget about China's Chimera embryos. Then what? AI sees us as out of control & the process starts over again. Is AI actually what we know as God? Has it always been there or did we create it. Sorry. I know I'm strange. 😇✌️
The vocals being mixed low is an artistic choice, vocals part of the song instead of over the instrumentals, and despite all the commenters who believe this is about Carl Jung, it's not, it's about evolution, it's the count of chromosomes and autosomes of a potentially evolutionary next step that will be more aligned with sacred geometry per Drunvalo Melchizedek.
You realize that it's possible for it to be about both of those, right? The Shadow is clearly referring to the Jungian concept of the shadow. The song is about integrating the parts he hides so he can move forward and become more.
Your shadow is your unconsious. It makes you do things you don't even know. This is the way to enlightenment. See whats in your darkness and then try to grow beyond it
Random people: 'so lets listen to this music, whats it called? tool? Oh!' ( a few moments later ) (third eye opens) (spiritual transformation) (birth of new creature) This is not a religion. But it should be. Just like 'Heilung'.
Is all about understanding all one’s potential, and evolving through the shadow as outlined by Carl Jung. Dr. Peterson also lectures on the principle of the shadow.
A lot of the lyrical sources on this album came from a book written by Bob Frissel titled "Nothing in this Book is True, But It's Exactly How Things Are." And aren't taken as serious by Maynard and Tool as they are the fans :)
you hear it when you know it. it's not a song that you take with you for the rest of your life the first time you encounter it. but it is a song that you take with you for the rest of your life... like the rest of their music.
The vocal is low in the mix on purpose. There are times when Maynard likes to see himself as more of an instrument. That said, always always always pull up the lyrics-the better to hear as well as understand.
For all those who are applying their lyrics solely to Jungian philosophies and such, there is a video out there that provides not only the lyrics but the explanation to them. These involve certain philosophies but the main point is 46 & 2. These are the chromosomal ratios that separate some people from others and that express themselves over time. There are 44 & 2s and 42 & 2s, each seeing the world in fundamentally different ways. What he seems to be singing about is his experiencing the transition from one to another and the revelations revealed. I always wondered before this why they didn't just call it "Forty-eight."
A popular belief is that the song title refers to an idea first conceived by Carl Jung. But this seems in error as no relevant citations to Jung on such an idea seem to be available. Such an idea is further attributed to Drunvalo Melchizedek concerning the possibility of reaching a state of evolution at which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes and leave a disharmonious state.[3][4] The premise is humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and two sex chromosomes, according to Melchizedek. Additionally, it may refer to the desire to experience change through the "shadow", an idea that represents the parts of one's psyche, and identity that one hates, fears and represses; this exists as a recurring theme in the work of Carl Jung.[5]
For me this song refers to Carl Jung’s interpretation on the shadow self. Also the evolution of man, it can have many meanings.
🤟
one of the best parts of Tool to me is how subjective it can be at times infinite possibilities.
It is and then sprinkled in with Melchizedek.
Is for everyone, not only for you
Strange, your “for you” explanation seems to match EXACTLY with tools actual inspiration for the song… in precise technical detail.

It's no coincidence that this song had its debut on the same week that the Kool-Aid guy made his first appearance.
