    Here’s how I got into TF2:
-Once upon a time, I was me, looking at Gmod videos (2012), I loved them back then, I couldn’t stop
-I find a video called “Team Fabulous 2”, and I love it (Godspeed Kitty), I found the cinematics at the beggining looked cool, and liked the voices and everything, I didn’t know those characters came from an actual game
-Days later, I search the video again, but under Team Fabulous 2 there’s a “meet the heavy” video
-I click it, out of curiosity

People always talk about TF2 as a "dying game". I disagree. It's definitely aging, and definitely less popular than it once was, but it's still got a very active community. Honestly, one more big update (maybe coinciding with the last comic, which could be any day now really) would boost it back up to at least 2014 levels I bet.
And when I say "always", I mean I got back into this game in 2016 and people were saying it then. It's been a very slow death, if that's what you're calling it.

    • @MythicTF2
      @MythicTF2 5 років тому +26

TF2 is dying. Slowly albeit. The game is receiving less and less content updates and less and less people are actually working on the game. Player numbers aren't a great way to determine if a game is dying or not either. You can look at a game like CS 1.6. The game is considered dead even though its still in steam's top 100 games. The game doesn't receive content updates at all and hardly ever any bug fixes that aren't because the engine was updated. CS 1.6 is in a zombified state, where the game is dead but the players themselves are keeping it alive. There is 0 official support for that game from valve. It's entirely community based. TF2 is currently heading into the same state. In the next 2-3 years content updates will more than likely slow down to a halt(even more than they are now), outside maybe the obligatory "community content packs" that they quickly bundle together every year for the main holidays. I love TF2, I truly do but people need to accept that it is dying. It is ancient in the gaming world. It is a relic of what influenced many game makers and companies to follow. TF2 set the modern F2P model. TF2 achieved what companies could only dream of. Don't say TF2 isn't on it's lifeline, we all know it is. Just remember it for what it was. In 20 years from now, when the game has no players anymore, pick back up the game and remember all the fun you had with it; not how valve "let it die".

Four years later, a month after the Love and War update dropped, I started playing it again since I felt I was old enough. After that, I fell in love with the game and I'm still active. This video made me realize why Overwatch Shorts fall flat in comparison
They are *extensions* of the characters instead of TF2 being *introduction* to the characters.
I showed all my favourite TF2 shorts (Meet the Team, Expiration Date and End Of The Line) to my sister for one sole reason: you can discover the game from them
Since Meet the Team focuses on a specific character and only that character, you don't need to know the other characters most of the time to understand, while Overwatch you're like "what is what who is who I don't understand anything" because they don't actually focus on one character but a bunch of them, leading to the shorts being much harder to showcase outside of the community
That's why TF2 is magical, you can present the stuff to basically anyone and they might be interested too instead of confused

I think the reason why people are ok with the meta the team videos and not modern trailers is that the meme the team videos (mtt for short) do actually explain things. You mentioned it yourself but with most of these modern trailers you can’t actually figure out what they are supposed to represent. The characters don’t say anything about the game and the short moments that are shown are meaningless due to that. They look pretty but say nothing. While mtt does show you things. It shows you the characters, play style and the best ones even tell a simple story.
Just look at the master piece that is meet the medic. You get the story of these Uber powers, see medics basic kit and learn his personality.

I didn't play TF2 until 2015, but I'd definitely say that the Meet the Team videos were one of the major reasons TF2 stood out from the crowd of shooters to me. Even with all of the shorts already made, save for the jungle inferno and whatever else valve has up their sleeves, it was really something to see the TF2 shorts, and my early time playing the game really did feel like playing AS the Team. Hearing even common voicelines for the first time was neat. Long live TF2!

to be honest, my joining TF2 was exactly the same as you Skymin. until tf2, I HATED FPS's with a passion. I thought they were all just boring point and click adventures... but aye, tf2 gave me a reason to learn that wasn't the truth... I mean shure, I was into fallout beforehand.. but I played fallout mostly for the story, and I tended to play in third person.

I remember being somewhere around 8~12 years old and I found meet the Pyro and Medic vids in my youtube recommendations. Once I got back to school a few days later, I spread word of it with my friends at how fun a class based shooter was, and we immediately picked our favorites or "mains" (I went for Engi, one of my best friends liked Sniper, and my other best friend chose Scout. Random fact, he was actually a very fast runner between our circle of friends so I saw how he gravitated towards them)
We never got to play the game until a year or so later, but hell I had no idea what I was doing and I still had fun. I even recall playing on a Mariokart server and a VSH server.
Until now TF2 still has a great place in my heart. I may have moved on to other games, but I will never forget one of the games that shaped me. Hell, once I get my new PC, I'm gonna return to TF2 as a side game, at the very least.
Edit: Okay you briefly shown Paladins as a similar game and that is actually one of the main games I play right now and it's because of, yep, TF2's influence. The main reason I liked Paladins from just seeing it is because it reminded me so much of what I loved about TF2 (that even Overwatch managed to not win me over):
    1. A colorful fantasy world where the characters have goofy personalities. TF2 and Paladins may have different styles, but I think it's easy to see how I can go from enjoying playing as a Large Funny Russian Man to playing a Large Funny Spanish Man. I mean, sure, OW has more fleshed out characters, but Paladins voice lines remind me so much of TF2. The fucking large spanish man even compliments how "hot and spicy" he is while being burnt to death.
    2. Customizable Character Looks and Playstyles. I mean, skins are inferior to hats, but I still like the way they both can completely go from either Edgy 13 y/o looks to a My Little Pony lookin' man beast. But just as important, the loadout system. I always liked using the Banners for Soldier, it swaps his weapon slot for an opportunity to use a team buff ability to help the team. I also saw that game literally called "Loadout" and was kinda interested, but it was too over the top and not the same way TF2 was. Paladins is similar to TF2 where you can choose a loadout for a character and play your own way. You want a hypermobile jumpy boi? Either equip the Rocket Jumper or Gunboats or go pick certain cards to make your Drogoz fly infinitely.
    3. Free to Play Steam Game. Minor point, but it made it easy to transition from one game to the other.
I think it shows how much legacy TF2 has that Paladins cites TF2 as its biggest inspiration. So much so that they have a TF2 Engineer skin for their turret building dude as well! And yes, I do love using both Engineers from both games.
To think that TF2 is still actively able to compete with OW and Paladins just goes to show how it is a timeless masterpiece, and I'm glad to have been part of that history.

A pretty good analysis on the importance of the Meet the Team shorts. While I haven't played TF2 in a long time, I still remember having a blast and the shorts really did help heighten that experience. Meet the Engineer, Meet the Medic, and Meet the Soy was what hooked me onto the game because how the shorts depicted each character.
Also, wasn't expecting to hear a jazzy rendition of Gwyn's theme during the video.

Meet The Heavy has the clip of him shooting the whole map, Meet The Scout shows his speed the whole time.

I actually remember years ago watching Meet The Heavy / Demo / Soldier with my Dad on UA-cam (he was really into CS:S at the time, even though that's like... The only game I've ever seen him play), but these videos got me s hyped up and super into the game that I was so excited to get it for my Birthday that was coming up later that year (May 2008), and just... There really has never been a game like it because of all 11 of those years I may have missed 1 year where I've at least played the game once since I've owned.
It's weird to say you've been able to experience almost the entirety of TF2's life (except for like super early stuff like Demoman's grenades being able to explode on contact when it's a roller), but essentially being able to grow up alongside it from the day the Scout update was released, to the old idle programs (I uh... Never got a Cheater's Lament), to the day where everyone felt the dread of the F2P "invasion" (even though looking back now it basically saved the game lmao), TF2 just has that perfect something to it. ✌️

A friend got me into TF2 but the "Meet the Team" shorts are what got me invested in the game and its characters. Even though I got bored of the game a couple years ago (had played for 5 years by that point), I'm still interested in content related to its universe. If it weren't for them, I honestly don't think I'd have been interested in TF2 as long as I have been.
