As a disabled vet and master armorer, I have owned the 6.5 Grendel about 15 years now, and 6.5 Lapua in a custom bolt gun for 10 years. In black rifles, we run the Grendel, several 5.56mm with different barrel lengths and rifle twists (one 26-inch, one 20-inch, one 14.5-inch, and the rest in 16-inch), 5.7x28mm, and one in .22LR (not including the 18-inch .50BMG on an AR lower). I have been shooting the M16/AR15 series rifles for 37 years (which includes shooting expert in the Army for 18-years). I'm not one to jump on the latest and greatest black rifle caliber of the month. I spend time doing research and verifying data and/or claims, (talked to the designer of the Grendel for 4 hours on the phone) and in many cases, we do our own testing digitally comparing the group-size/accuracy of firearms and ammunition, shooting high-speed video with our two high-speed cameras, HD Video, and even multi-point audio. this year we also added a special through the scope camera for shooting 4k point of view video of the target (and other technologies) all for social media such as the weaponeer channel. And I have to say that the 6mm ARC is the only caliber I would purchase for testing without all the "research". Why? Partly based on my own knowledge of ballistics and the black rifle and the other part based on Hornady Manufacturing's reputation being on the line. We rarely get to shoot Hornady Ammo (We would shoot 100% Hornady ammo if we could but on an Army disability pension and a limited production budget it's not possible) but if Mrs. COVID-19 hadn't cleared out our 2020 budget, you could bet your ass we would have picked up a barrel, bolt carrier assy., and Hornady ammo for a video series on the 6mm ARC testing rifle, and accuracy. and then testing 6mm ARC vs 6.5 Grendel. we would also love to test two AR's in 6mm ARC with one being Standard rifling and the other being Polygonal rifling to see if there are any advantages in bullet velocity and/or accuracy. unfortunately, it's not likely to happen this year. We have plenty of extra lowers on hand but companies want over a grand for just a complete upper these days and building one is still around $600+ each, so it gets expensive very quickly, not including the man-hours of testing and then editing! So, with no budget remaining this year, and it would consume all off (and likely more) of next year's budget, and we can't have our whole year budget-focused just on the 6mm ARC. This makes it unlikely we will get to it before everyone has videoed it to death in lessor detail, and in the clutter never find our videos. that said, I may try to build a 6mm ARC for my personal collection next year. It will be hard to justify when I already have the 6.5 Grendel, but I do like collecting accurate and fun rifles. of my AR's the Gredel is my favorite, so it would be troubling if it's accuracy was outclassed by the ARC lol.

Look at Bear Creek Arsenal for complete uppers. I bought a 350 Legend upper with bolt carrier group for $250. I've had a 6 Predator for a few years, and 6.5 Grendel for 7 or 8 years. I think the 6ARC would double the effective range for our military.

@@jeffcamp9008 It's funny, before Tom Beckstrand's "announcement" in G&A, in 2009, a test was being run at a security firm I was at (under TITANGROUP/L3--which had a jointly run DoJ/DoD PSD program protecting municipal officials in the end of 2010s era VS the DTOs hunting some of em) and holy smokes..First off, I saw the first .300BLK which, like many, I was pitching a serious tent to see such a thumper being so quietly employed (subsonic AR rounds were new to me as I was now in DFEs but not a mil veteran) but then, the 300 HAMR arrived--as no one else wanted to try it/field it...and so was the Grendel.
*NO BS, NO JOKE...our fmr SOF and fmr FLE guys that ran the RATTLR (L3 COMM) teams that transported folks back then, all were trying to use the BLK or 77gr Black Hills and that was it. Then we met Bill Wilson when we went to train in Arkansas one week w/another civ firm, and we got our hands on 300 HAMR...And like the ARC from what I understand? THEY WORK IDENTICALLY. I would get either an ARC or the HAMR (both are simple barrel changes if i recall correctly, maybe a mag diff...but not extensive changes like other modular ARs) but still...If you liked the Grendel?? Here: So even on the civ IC side of the "gun work"/PSD world? We used BOTH in ACTUAL DFEs in real world conditions. Now, I was still utilizing my DPMS 5.56 14.7" rig,and I wasn't doing anything sexy or getting too kinetic as a mere 'terp/consultant and trunk monkey in the convoy, meaning I was the last victor...HOWEVER, on a few diff days, I got to experience some of our runs from Chula Vista to TJ to Nuevo Laredo all the way to even Rosario region/AO w/the Grendel in the only time being raised in anger that I know of (cue the getting laughed at) and when the 300 HAMR would run, when the Grendel would run, they all just seriously outdo even .308/7.62 does imho...No joke*
By the end....without too much detail, for a scrawny, non-vet, non LE loser like me to go from being a bilingual rangemaster in San Diego to doing THAT job with those guys? Guys who taught FAST Team courses, HRT, fmr SOF and frogs etc?? They allowed me to finally put my DPMS down and try the 300 HAMR, which was identical to the Grendel imho....so when I saw them using the ARC after I'd left not long ago??? NO ONE believed that it was being used in the priv sector let alone in the very SMUs these guys had spent the 90s in!!! lol...here we are... I'm so glad the "hog hatchets" of yesteryear did exactly what we always claimed, regardless of the Dick's Sporting goods type counter-lingering snobs who harangued staff and fmr LE guys, becoming the crowd who'd scoff at us saying "77 grains?? You don't need that....I do plenty with the standard. Why do all the old phogeys need their precious .308s?? What can't you aim??" or the joke said BY guys who were fmr military to our fmr SOF (but not saying it aloud) instructors and later on, our ICs and S.Os, would be "sooo wait...you are spending all this money on .300BLK now? But before the complaint was the LACK of lethality in a .22 round the ENTIRETY of NATO uses? Wow....no wonder you couldn't hack it in the box!! bahaha!" ...ugh..
*Point is, not only does the .300 HAMR and 6mm ARC, downrange (I only speak for the HAMR), but both were tried by the firm...or at least the ARC's cousin, a round called like the "6 mil dash" or "6 mil dasher" was what the burly f....king frog and two Unit dudes called it...and they, again, were out...not at the Command anymore, but when those guys got them a few years ago, the 90s veterans I'd assisted over w/L3 were using that variant of the 6mm (and were also using the .300 HAMR vs the BLK)*

I think it will be a great cartridge and there is room enough in the market place for both it and the 6.5 Grendel. Just like there is room in the market for 6.5 Creed and 6 Creed. When the wind picks up, my heavy 147 eld match 6.5 Creed outperforms the 6 creed all day long, especially when hand loaded with RL 26, and velocities over 2950. But with no wind 6 Creed out does me at the matches. I do agree the 6mm ARC on paper will slightly outperform the 6.5 Grendel. However, due to the Grendel's bigger bore, it can get a little more velocity with a shorter barrel. I would like to see it on paper, the 6ARC with 108 bullet vs the 6.5 Grendel with Sierra's 107tmk BOTH out of an 18" barrel. Im betting they are neck and neck and almost exactly the same. This is the problem with the 224 Valkarie IMO is that the small-bore diameter means it needs a long barrel to burn all the powder.

I’m glad to see someone finally standardized a 6 mm A.R. Wildcat variant cartridge. I have seen people have great results with the 6 mm A.R. and other 6 mm Grendel Wildcats. They should perform a lot better than the 224 Valkyrie.

Its takes a bit of engineering validation to get a SAAMI spec. Which is nice because it’s in the public domain now and you’ve got 20 barrel manufacturers and not one little shop spinning out three barrels a month. The 6AR and 6ARTurbo also have IP royalties which is why the dies and barrel reamers were so freaking expensive. And which is why they never took off.

@Hornady Manufacturing What's going to be done for a budget ammo option? The 6.5 Grendel has a $0.24 to the current panic buy price of $0.28 a round with Wolf. That's a huge factor in not only getting people into it but keeping them into it. So will there be a $0.22 to $0.30 a round option for the 6mm ARC, even if its offered in a steel case?

    • @MrBurdinekl

Good question. I fantasize about a 6mm AR pistol, rather than a 5.56... a more true do everything round. If a good 6mm AR or AR pistol is produced I could see 6mm ammo prices coming down due to the popularity. As a recon Marine, I longed for a 6mm rifle and cartridge to be adopted... That would really make it affordable for civilians and potentially turn every Marine rifleman into something of a sniper.

Not to mention the extra weight and bulk of the ammo. It's not the small variance that you think it is. DoD asked for the 6mmARC. It's their spec. It's their Barrett Rec7's. As far as systems are concerned, if I stock up on 1000 projectiles of 120-140 gr. 6.5, I can use it in both and get great performance without having to use a separate projectile and use the same ballistic calculations with a change in velocity.

Biggest flaw of this cartridge is the magazine, you can't expect everyone to be satisfied with your shitty 10 round magazine, it completely defeats the purpose of the AR15 platform (high capacity, great firepower).
If this cartridge can only be used on some super designated hunting/match AR15 then you can kiss your sales goodbye cause no one is buying that. Show me the 6mm ARC being fired automatically out of an AR15/M4 with a good 25 round magazine. That way at least everyone can see how reliable and stable this round can be, cause right now this just doesn't feel very compatible with the AR15 system. Hornady should have partnered with Magpul to make some custom high capacity magazine first, instead of building that weird sportsman AR with Barrett that no one is gonna buy.

    • @DanK1977
      @DanK1977 4 роки тому +1

Actually it’s a slightly necked down 6.5 Grendel with the shoulder moved back a bit and a different taper. Oh wait, that’s actually pretty different. Looks like the only thing it actually shares is the case head size. Also, the military has next to nothing invested in 6.8/270. The 6.8 thing is still in the development stage and the only thing finalized is the issuing of the requirement. There’s several companies in contention for the contract but nothing finalized.
I don’t think this thing is going to change the world by any means, but the fact that it has already been officially adopted by a JSOC unit does give it some advantages. 6.5 Creedmoor is a similar story. It is so close to a 260REM that they almost should have been sued for copyright infringement but it’s hugely popular. Even DOD has gotten on board with the 6.5CM. It’s the caliber of choice for the new production m110’s. So prepare for a lot of surplus M118LR to hit the market in the next 12-18 months.
I’m honestly skeptical of any “new” cartridges that get released like this though. I was interested in the Valk when it was announced but fortunately didn’t jump right into it and given all the problems that it’s had actually getting the 90gr bullets to group I’m glad I didn’t. It was a lot of build up for very little result. The amount of energy it carries at long range does me no good. I’m not a PRS guy.
But I’m interested in this one. The controllability for fast follow up shots plus the extra energy it carries combined with the factory support make it an interesting cartridge for me. I’ve loved 6mm AR for a long time but really didn’t want to deal with the issue of forming my own brass. This gives me the same capability but with major manufacturer support.

I kinda like this cartridge for an AR 15 round. Most AR 15 shooters won't carry a 24" barrel. It cannot beat the 308 with the new bullets and powders. Their 6 ARC 18" barrel was down 150 fps, and my 18" 308 will exceed their velocity with similar B.C. on the bullet. And they lose alot more velocity with the light bullets and a 16" barrel some over 500 fps if that's of interest to you. My 18" AR 10 will run hybrids 168 .515 BC at 2787 ave., highest velocity 2815. Plus its capable of 10 shot groups just inside one inch...but its heavier...but also alot more versatile...with tracers, armor piercing, cheap components, and ammo available everywhere. But it has ar 15 merit if the barrel is at least 18 or 20 inches..imo.
I also built a long action detachable magazine rifle 30" Bartlein barrel, 2 oz trigger that shoots 200 grain crimped nose Sierra MK .715 B.C. at 2850 fps top near 2900 fps. Over 3600 ft/ lbs if energy from a 308 case...and it exceeds the 300 PRC factory loads in 26" factory barrels when chronographed, plus the 308 case can shoot tiny 10 shot groups..

But I do like the factory available chamber for the 6mm Grendel...its not bad, but ya need to keep the barrel on the longer side to gain anything. Also a lot of factory hype going on here. The 224 Valkyrie with 95 grain SMK has a .6 BC at 2708 fps average velocity has a flatter trajectory, considerably less wind drift and slightly more energy than the 6ARC 108 grain .536 B.C. at 1000 yards. Plus it stays supersonic two hundred yards further down range...

I don't see the ARC having to reload less than the .308. I know 20 round is standard. But if round count is important to you, 25 round mags are available. Everything else they have listed is a benefit of the ARC over a .308. Good looking round. Looking forward to getting one. But don't use inaccurate information as a benefit.

@@sendit2873 High volume does not necessarily mean mag dumps. High volume means being able to spend a day ringing steel out to 1000, instead of spending an less than an hour with 2 boxes of high end match and having to go home. Hornady understands this with their "black" and "frontier" line in other calibers. It is an absolute necessity for caliber success.. and after 1 year, developing better chamber dimensions/reamers also is going to be necessary for success. MANY barrels built off of the hornady chamber dimensions are struggling with accuracy.. which relegates them to "mag dumpers" in the end anyways. I truly hope this cartridge works out. If it does, it will be my next AR caliber (or maybe even a bolt gun now with a custom reamed barrel) but teething issues are delaying that purchase.

Will be interesting to see what barrel life would be in a premium cut-rifled barrel. My dedicated prone rifles in 6BR UBL w/105gr VLD's (2985fps) would start to give up that guilt-edge accuracy at 1700rds and start pitching wild 9's at 600yds after 2000rds. My guess is that under similar conditions (slow-fire prone), these should go 2200+ rds using available 103-105gr projectiles.
Where this cartridge will REALLY shine is in the NRA Tactical Prone class (if they still are involved in competitions). The NRA Highpower Committee in their infinite stupidity, has allowed ANY caliber instead of restricting the game to the 223/556 caliber that 95% of AR15 safe queens use (THE people the game was intended to draw). As a result, this would be the exact caliber of all available that I would campaign to consistently win that game...my opinion.
