  • On this episode, Seth and Preston sit down with Project Engineer Miles Neville, and Senior Ballistician Jayden Quinlan. The topic at hand is one that we are proud and very fond of - the 6mm Advanced Rifle Cartridge or 6 ARC, for short. The cartridge can stand on its own in a bolt or a gas gun and serves a wide variety of applications. We discuss how the cartridge came to be, initial offerings, as well as match and hunting applications. We hope you find this episode informative and entertaining.

I started out CQB with an M2 Carbine in M1A1 configuration (old timer), modernized as time moved on and saw the eventual adaptation of the M4 as a good replacement and carried it. With reading about the 6MM ARC when it was released, with my past experience I believed the AR15 platform had truly come into the 21st century. I immediately bought an Aero Precision M4E with a 16" Ballistic Advantage barrel, some Hornady factory ammo and loading supplies. WELL DONE! I don't want to even get into the unbelievable accuracy, shoot ability and Ballistic performance, people would not believe it. Suffice to say fabulous wind performance tested out to 1/2 mile.
The AR15 is now not only a true 21st century CQB and general purpose military rifle IT IS a state of the art multipurpose rifle cartridge combination for family needs.

@@oif3vetk9 I was very pleasantly surprised by my Aero Precision. I wanted a modernized AR15, by that I mean an improved cartridge over the 5.56 NATO that could use one projectile for CQB/PDW and as a 1 rifle family rifle. Take medium game, carry easy in a truck or on horse.
What I got was that as well as 1/2" 100 accuracy with factory 105 grain for a fair price.

Where in the world was the carbine taught. Dad was issued one in WW2. They gave those out to staff and support instead of a pistol. But that was 80 years ago. Are you 100 and still shooting??? If so you're my hero!

@@michaelvangundy226 The 30 Carbine served from 1942 in WWII, in Korea 1953, in Vietnam until 1975. In a multitude of little conflicts all around the world after that. The talk says issued to staff and support. Audy Murphy and C Carwood Lipton were not support and neither were many of those issued the Carbine. Think airborne!
In the early 70's I carried a model 70, an M2 30 Carbine in MA1 configuration as my secondary weapon because it was small when folded and lite also a 1911. As time passed there were M16's CAR 15's as the secondary.
I believe when you're in close there are worse choices then a well maintained 30 Carbine or the M4.

I wasn't arguing the lethal potential of the little 30. Dad said that it was enough to drop a deer in France. They were on a hold. I just wasn't aware they were used past the Korean war. And about my last choice for frontline combat. He ran a wiring jeep around and had radios to relay for the forward observer. He said he could see the front but was just outside of range. So he didn't need a rifle. For me it was the 20 inch a1. But my war was fought from California.

New guy to the long range/PRS world. (Starting my 2nd season) I started out shooting a M1A in .308. Great rifle, highly impractical for PRS. (It's all I had.) I ordered a complete upper in Nov 2020. Fast forward Oct 2021 I finally score a aero precision 24" hvy barrel complete upper 2 days before our season finale. (Actually, noon, Thursday before the match.) I cleaned the upper, took it out, broke in the barrel, zeroed, came home, cleaned it again, threw it in the case. Friday afternoon fine tuned the zero, got my average velocity (with the help of a friend and his labradar), trued BC in my kestrel and went to work Saturday at the match. (Had all of 66 rounds on the rifle) Only shot a 45 BUT you have to understand I only fired 58(ish) rounds to begin with. (My time management sucked) The guys on my squad were highly impressed with the performance. And I quote "That thing is a f'ing laser!" Yep, it shoots nice.
Out of the box shooting Hornady 108 Match ammo my AR shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards. With Black ammo it spreads out to around 3/4". Velocity average for factory 108 ammo is just under 2700 fps, Black ammo is around 2725 fps. ES/SD from both ammo lines is amazing.
Started load development recently. (Still have plenty of factory 108 Match on the shelf. Guess that's the benefit of waiting almost a year on a upper, plenty of time to buy ammo. lol) Right now I'm getting 2685 fps (avg) sd 4 ES 9 with 28.8 grs of leverevolution, CCI 400 primer using hornady match brass. (No flash hole de-buring, just anneal, size, trim, mandrel the neck, dump powder, seat bullet at factory length, go.) Like y'all said, I'm not worried about crazy speed, just consistency. I know leverevolution is temp sensitive but as long as the velocity change is known it's nothing that can't be dealt with. Have some N140 coming. Might drop velocity but shouldn't have temp sensitivity.
Anywho, after all the rambling, absolutely love 6 ARC. So glad I discovered it before building a 6.5 creedmoor gas gun. Super excited to get this PRS season underway. Taking it out to vortex vengeance in a couple weeks. Keep up the good work Hornady. Love your products. (Yours are the only bullets I run,,,, for everything!)

If you have a 5.56/223 lower, you can build an upper for this caliber with a 6.5 Grendel BCG, 6mm ARC barrel, Upper, handguard, gas tube, gas block, muzzle device and 6.5 Grendel magazine. All of these parts can be shipped to your home. That's the beauty of a caliber like this.....with HUGE ballistic advantages. Unless you're shooting 5.56/223, 7.62x39 or 308, you're paying a TON for ammo. You can also build 224 Valkyrie, 300 Blackout, 6.8SPC, 6.5Grendel, 22 Nosler, 204 Ruger, and 300 Ham'r with ONE serialized receiver without modifications.

I contacted Starline and they are not taking on new projects and their technician said it wouldn't work because the primer pockets would stretch if you removed brass from the base. That didn't make since to me since it would be the same as existing 5.56! So I took two 6.5 Grendel cases and milled them down myself to fit my 5.56 bolt. I then put the 5.56 bolt in my 6.5 Grendel upper and have now shot each case 4 times and still have resistance in the primer pockets. One case is PPU and the other is Hornady. I'm pushing a 140 grain bullet with 21.5 grains of IMR4198 because I have a good supply of both. No pressure signs. I'm going to work up to 22 grains which should be near max pressure. I haven't chronographed this load and I'm not using the gas system for this test. I'm just testing the integrity of the base.

Hornady, IMHO, YOU need to add some factory loaded offerings to the 6mm ARC. Currently, all of the loadings are > 100 grains and that's hurting the reputation of the round, because people think that it's just for long range. How about offer the same bullet choices as the 6mm Creedmore?
Edit: What part of "factory loaded offerings" aren't you guys getting? Hornady has done a terrible job of showing the 6mm ARC's versatility.

The smaller case sure saves powder over the 40 to 45-grain loads I put in my 6mm Remington for not much more velocity. I'll bet the barrels last longer. No more than I shoot now, and as accurate and cheap as your ammo is in real dollars when corrected for inflation, buying ammo is better than reloading for me at 79 years old.

Hey guy's, why don't you see what you can do with the 6x45 wildcat? If you "Ackley" it you can straighten the walls and change the shoulder to 40 degrees. This will let you get more powder in it and increase performance while maintaining the 5.56 bolt and magazines in the AR 15 platform. This might get near 6ARC performance while keeping the round count the same in the magazine as 5.56. If it works out the military might jump all over it!!! You won't need to pay me a royalty just send me an upper!!! 😀

      @ChallisVenstra 5 місяців тому

But I could be used in the AR-10. But old cartridges in new packaging does not rifles sell. A lot comes down to the barrel twist too. Standard twist for a 243 is 1/10”, which is great for deer hunting loads, maximum point blank range shooting, but since the 6.5 Creedmoor came out with modern turret scopes and accurate rangefinders, you can lob a heavy bullet supersonicly over 1000 yards. That’s the selling point. The old school 400 yard and in “flat shooting” rifle doesn’t sell anymore.
A lot of the reasons the communists in the country hate the AR-15 so much is gun sales were declining until the AR’s were made publicly available again.
