    Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

The 6mm ARC was developed for the AR15. It is a near perfect round for that. If you are a bolt action type person, you would say it is under powered. In opinion, it is near perfect for what it made for.
When you compare calibers/rounds, you have to think about why they developed.
    It is a great round!

🤠 I think many of us out West forget that most of the country is only hunting Whitetail deer and at ranges under 300 yards (usually half of that)! Thefore, what we see as an "irrelevant" cartridge (because we may be thinking about elk) is actually ideal for Whitetail deer at closer ranges! That is why it is important that we take those situations into strong consideration! Horneday seems to be the only manufacturer thinking about what the majority of the country wants and needs, rather than the rare international hunter seeking a stump thumper of a Magnum cartridge! I like what they have done! I think that this cartridge would also be good for the military in closed quarter, indoor combat situations! Anyway, thanks for the review Ron! 👍

Yes, it fills that role. But to be fair, 77 grain ar15 can run double duty on both deer and two legged critters. And 25-45 sharps requires only a barrel change on the ar15. Or 300 hamr. No bolt change. 6mm arc is cool, but it's a spendy way to do what already exists.

If you're not shooting past 300 yards, why not go with the 6.5 Grendel ? More energy inside of 400 yards with a heavier bullet and basically the same wind drift and trajectory. I recently bought a Grendel upper for my AR-15 after comparing the two. I saw more of an advantage in the 6.5 Grendel over the 6 ARC at the shorter ranges you would use an AR-15 for. At longer ranges maybe, but then your power factor drops enough you need to use a bigger cartridge anyway. I don't get it.

Excellent recoil advantages south of the others. This round for sure very useful for purpose in the AR platform. And until you've hunted high and low recoil you don't really see the benefits of being able to remain on target whilst looking through a scope. I'm not certain if this can be done using this round? They're popular because they do the best you can with a given bullet diameter in the AR platform.

I am building an AR in 6mm ARC for two of the reasons he mentioned. The main reason is for getting people in to hunting, particularly my young niece and nephews. I know when I was a kid who was new to hunting, recoil was my biggest worry. There are too many other factors to worry about when you are shooting an animal to have to worry about recoil. 6mm ARC is more than enough cartridge for the job and it removes the worry of recoil.
The other thing is I like shooting long range for fun (I don't compete or anything, I just like ringing steel at a distance for fun). I shoot Berger VLD bullets in my .270 with 54.5 grains of Hodgdon 4831. The 6mm ARC is supersonic past 1000yds and a typical load uses half the powder I use in my .270. In theory, the powder cost should be half as much for the 6mm. The bullets should cost a little less too, but that depends on what i end up settling on.

Ron Spomer, you need to know the actual history of the so called 6ARC..
Hornady stole the design from a great and well know wildcater of the new era.

I feel vindicated. You and I had a short discussion on velocity where I argued I am happy to give up velocity in favor of more consistent accuracy. I think we were talking about 6mm or 6.5mm bullets. I see no reason to push a round out at >2900 fps when ~2600 fps gets the job done with potentially better accuracy. I don't care that my slower bullet has more drop out to 300 yards as long as I can consistently hit what I am aiming at (staying within your 6in target for example). Flat shooting is not all what it's cracked up to be with the cost of barrels and powder. Maybe ARC stands for exactly that - increased amplification of bullet trajectory? Thanks for opening your thought process and coming to the dark side... 😁

The answer is longer necks, so that you can handle the lighter bullets and the heavy bullets. And donuts are no problem if you are reloading with a bushing die, just don’t size your longer neck down to the shoulder neck Junction before the donut. Lastly throats erode and there will be a point when your bullet cannot be moved out further because the neck will not be holding it. Think Of have the Versatility of the long neck 30-06.

I was really digging the idea of a bolt action in this cartridge, but after researching I think the better option would be a 6mm BR Norma. The main hindrance of the ARC is the bolt in the AR15. I had hoped that CMMG would adapt their MK47 PowerBolt design to use with the ARC since it uses the larger 308 style bolt carrier to handle the 7.62x39 as opposed to the weaker/smaller AR15 bolt by taking out too much material to accommodate the larger rim. I believe this is why they reduce the pressure for the AR15. If CMMG produced their rifle with the stronger bolt, it would be the best AR platform for this cartridge.

If I was a new shooter and looking for a more all around cartridge, the 6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel would be great choices and both have ammo available for similar prices as CM size ammo.. They both offer more smack than the .223/5.56 in the same platform, without really adding much weight in the loadout.
I recently "built" a 7.62×39 AR and it has great potential for the shorter ranges where I hunt. I am not recoil sensitive, and really notice little difference between it and a 5.56 AR, but my young grandson does. I enjoy your show and watch regularly. I am about the same age as you so I can relate to a lot of your experiences. I am currently looking for a new varmint rifle. I had pretty much decided on the 6MM ARC and was really interested in what you had to say about it. Problem is, after watching your show I now have several concerns about the 6 ARC. I believe it to be a good cartridge for its intended purposes however, there seems far more hype in advertising and bragging than in actual facts as to the performance of the cartridge much like back in the day and the very successful 308 advertising campaign. Advertisers sold people on the idea of how much more "efficient" the 308 (62,000psi) was than the 30-06 (50,000psi). Fact is that the real difference was in the working pressures of the firearms/cartridges at the time. The 30-06 ammo was loaded to lower pressures so it wouldn't damage the gas operated firearms of the time. The inherent efficiency of the cartridge case had little if anything to do with the actual ballistics of the cartridge and everything to do with the ballistics of sales for the 308. Loaded to the same pressures, with the same bullets, in similar rifles the 308 simply lacks the case capacity and horsepower to do what the 30-06 will. This is the same with the 6 ARC/243 Winchester comparisons.
My understanding is that commercially produced 6 ARC ammo is loaded to 52,000 PSI which makes sense to me as, I do not believe Hornady would purposefully market ammo that would fit and function perfectly in the extremely popular AR style firearm which could at a minimum damage the firearm and at worst, maim or kill the shooter? l just don't believe Hornaday would do that nor that their lawyers would let them. Further with the 243 having a huge case capacity advantage over the 6 ARC and operating at substantially higher pressures (horse power) 60,000/62,000 PSI) how can any reasonable person argue that 6ARC ballistics are nearly identical to the 243 Winchester?
If a person is talking about a hand loading proposition and if a person has a bolt/single shot firearm then the 6 ARC could be loaded to have higher horsepower but, only up to a point. Then the 243 Winchester could be loaded to higher pressures if a person wanted to take the risk. Also the 243 could be setup to shoot long for caliber bullets putting it on even footing with BC's. Then what?
I just don't see the 6 ARC as equaling the 243.
Hunt honest and shoot straight. Heh heh "shoot straight" could certainly have more than one meaning.

Considering that this cartridge is designed mainly for the AR platform it would seem to fit pretty well in the hog hunting category. But also slowing it down a little bit would help with the noise reduction aspect if the shooter should decide to put a suppressor on the rifle. As most of us know, a suppressor really only does it’s job if the round goes subsonic. Can’t really think of any other reason. I would never buy it just because it’s too expensive for me to use in large quantities. It’s not very easy to find either. I don’t know … I guess it just depends on the shooter. And the wallet.

After a great experience with Grendel I think 6 ARC is brilliant. Let's face it, the AR15 platform is going to be replaced in the military and the cost of entry to a Sig Spear is prohibitive for most of us. The 6 ARC adds a big boost to the AR15 platform. It isn't a 277 fury, but you will have a lot more power than 556 and quite a bit less weight and recoil than a Sig Spear chambered in 277. Note: the 277 really competes with AR10's, but we all like the AR15 so, 6 ARC is a big winner in my book.

I don’t think those 108gr in the table truly reach 2800fps shown in the table in this video. I think 6ARC is a business because of AR15 service market. No service rifle market means no civilian market as the usual rule. Only 243Win, 6CM seem like reliable factory available, and the other 30+ 6mm cartridges will never go to factory production. If you can get 2900fps for 103ELDX then it would be excellent for varmint and deer. Perhaps the 70-80gr varmint loads is where the 6ARC is best placed that should reach 2800-3000fps somewhere I would think. In most other videos I’ve seen using 103gr or 108gr, they start having pressure signs or primer blow out with velocities typically sub 2600 to mid 2600 and that makes it a baby 308. Inflating the velocity numbers to look like you get 2800fps for 108gr I think is a bit of marketing stretch to make it seem like an edge or keep up with 6 or 6.5CM.

Well I've seen a couple lost with it already last year. No exit and no blood trail.

Well 180!yards isn't too far, and when a deer is knocked down hair knocked out of him blood's found there, and he gets up and runs off that's not a Miss buddy if you don't have a blood trail to follow, around here it's over , I don't care how much energy a bullet put in a Target if the target's not killed and you don't have a blood trail and you don't have a trail dog , you're not finding the deer. I mean you might be as all these new kids, they don't care as long as they go and find a rack five days later after buzzards are flying around, if that's the kind of Hunter you are, then you are set.
I mean I shot a good one with my 6.5 Grendel Last year at 80 yards and didn't get an exit or any blood trail and I almost didn't find that buck, but I just stumbled across him.
I mean I'm not bull crapping you, the facts are the facts if you don't have two holes in an animal it's hard to find them in the deep South I've hunted down here 40 years now.
And the biggest requirement for a deer cartridge down here is two holes in the animal. I know gun makers and bullet salesman like to talk about all the high B.C. and energy in the Target with no exit, all these frangible bullets and all this bull crap. But the fact still remain if you can't find your game, well you just got a conversation piece then., Think about it the pipsqueak 243 comes out and over 3,100 ft per second
And for the last 35 years of using one I have heard people talk about how it was too small not good enough and blah blah blah. Now you got a cartridge coming out 300 plus feet a second slower than the 243 and it's a long range Slayer?
Car reminds me of CNN and nsnbc and the rest of the b******* we hear everyday.

The spot where I believe the 6 ARC will shine is the micro action Howa. The rifle is under 5 pounds. That would make a great high mountain. Off the beaten path kind of rifle.

That's right. That and the Grendel are perfect for those ultralight mini actions.
Do you by chance have a howa mini action build? If so would you mind sharing what you used and the weights? Thanks.

@@bigald9560 I don't have one yet. I was really hoping CZ would have a 527 6mm ARC. CZ dropped the 527 line and shot them selves in the foot.
At some point I will probably get a Howa but I don't have one yet.

It’s shines in the AR15. Way more power and effective range than the .223. The military should’ve adopted it instead of the .277 BS

The 6mm ARC, from what I have gathered, is a DOD & Hornady project to make a cartridge to be more effective than the 5.56 at the extended ranges (500-850 yards), yet, lighter weight than the .308 and also interchangeable with the M4/AR-15 platform. A soldier can have one lower receiver and two upper receivers (5.56 & 6mm ARC). When engaging at enemies beyond the effective range of the 5.56, the soldier can switch uppers and effectively do so. I know I am late to the table, but I just watched the Hornady podcast on the 6mm ARC. That is where I got this info.
Note: Combat is different than hunting. I do not encourage anyone take a 700 yard shot on a deer with a 6mm ARC. I wouldn't take a 500 yard shot on a deer with a 7mm Rem mag. My personal hunting limit is 400 yards... and that is far...
