The breaking up of Kanami solo's with a full chord interlude is definitely part of her guitar style, she does that often. I love her doing it, I can't explain why I enjoy her doing that so much , it just sounds really pleasant to the ear.
"DICE" is off the 2018 "World Domination" album, so Miku was playing about four years here. Miku kicks ASS right now even more than the "Dice" song. My understanding is Kanami writes the song, then hands it off to Akane and MISA to add their parts as they feel, so yeah MISA has a lot to do with her part. I feel this is how they last ten years as a band and are still friends and keep getting better and better every year........no egos here. Picking a favorite member is like trying to pick a favorite Band-Maid song. I LOVE them all equally.
Miku Kobato went to Platinum Passport and sold them on her concept of an all girl band who dress as subservient Maids a la the maid cafes who play impossibly hard rocking music. She was involved in the recruitment of a talented singer/ songwriter. The band formed organically from there. When she realized her voice was not suited to her dream she stepped to the side for the betterment of the music. She became the second voice in the band. Supposedly management wanted someone to hold the guitar so she did. Then she accepted the challenge of learning to play that guitar on the fly while performing. She sold tickets to shows personally. She worked in a Noodle Cafe run by Platinum Passport to interact with potential fans. Her vision and commitment would not be denied. When management finally agreed to the songs Kanami was writing for years she wrote the lyrics. Like her guitar playing she has become an even better lyricist using Word play in both English and Japanese. She tirelessly promotes the band on radio, television and in person. She practices magic on the audience. She sings and plays guitar to a very high degree and seldom leaves the stage. She's created side project to express her hippie side. She is first among equals. She has sustained the miracle of this 10 year old band. All hail the mighty Kobato! She deserves our respect and love.!
Favorite member…… for me it’s Miku. I just respect her work ethic and her desire to improve as a musician. Plus she founded the band so I will always be grateful for that. She is also a very good lyricist. She is also very smart. She knows how to market their “brand” that she came up with. Plus her stage presence is great . She always gets the crowd eating from her palms with her interactions.
Yep, it's TOUGH to pick a favorite Maid. I legit. spent 45 minutes trying to figure it out when I first heard that question, and pretty much came to the conclusion that it's impossible to answer. But (you knew that was coming, didn'tcha?), I'm a drummer, so... It's a Akane's creative choices that continually blow me away. I have yet to hear any drummer like her. With that said, ALL of the ladies blow me away... all the time...and I'm over two years down the pigeon hole. "Dice" was my first foray into the asylum (Maidiacs Unite!) and I was a goner after mere seconds, but "Onset" was the track that made me realize this merry band of impossibly hard rockin' Maids is SPECIAL. Band of a lifetime, man. Thanks so much, MM! Great insights! 🕊
Do I have a favourite? No. I think in my case that each individual member epitomizes what I consider to be a necessary part of a great rock band. It wouldn't work without each one of them selflessly contributing to making each song as good as it can be. That's the Band-Maid secret weapon. No egos. In my head they are a perfect band. That being said, Miku has wormed her way into my heart like no other entertainer ever has. That woman is magical. Great reactions! Thanks! 🙂
I really appreciate you’re analysis and commentary. You seem to catch all those little details most of us miss, and then describe it so we can appreciate Band-Maid even more. It’s been a while since I’ve heard a band that appeals so much to the casual listeners, the musicians, and the producers as much as Band-Maid. They have something different going on. Favorite member? I can’t do it. It’s like picking a favorite daughter. I love and appreciate them all. The band wouldn’t be the same without each of them.
if you want to see MISA featured throughout a song, I believe the best example of that is: "Manners" live, from the Manners/Black_Hole (live combo) and, you should see Akane's drum solo in "Freedom" live
I'm also an old school metalhead...started back in the 70's with the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath. Japan is putting out some really good metal bands, and seriously talented artists. I can't pick a favorite member for Band-Maid...although I would say that I admire Miku and Saiki greatly. Miku for her dedication to learn how to play the guitar while stepping back from lead vocals, and Saiki for her throat surgery and recovery and have a voice that sounds even better. They are all so talented and integrated, that it's a tsunami of musical pleasure for my ears. "Influencer" has a bit of a rap aspect, at least to me...that might be a good one for you to check out🤘🤘
I love every member of this band, but being a former metal bassist, I have a soft spot in my heart for Misa. She's an awesome bassist, and so easy to look at. LOL.
remember back when that recording was made Kanami was still playing both guitar parts in the studio, this album was kind over a crossover period for Miku where she started playing in the studio recordings more as her guitar proficiency grew what you can hear on onset in the back is kanami's backing track of her on the keyboard
Your comment about Miku and her confidence means you need to checkout Black Hole live (with Manners). In the scorebook for Unseen World the rhythm guitar is I believe labelled as guitar 1, which in all other cases is the lead guitar.
During the live performance of Thrill, Miku was recovering from the flu. She had only been back upright and functional for about 3 days when they filmed that online concert. As the concert went on she got her energy back, but at the beginning she was very subdued. The second (Third) guitar is on the backing track. Miku is still playing her crunch. When they play Onset live currently, they don't use the backing track, and the third guitar isn't present. Akane uses a limp wrist drumming technique, you can see it other live performances, she literally whips the drum stick with her fingers and wrist giving her hits that much more punch. Slow down her solo in Freedom to half speed, you can see how she does it. And the main thing about Band-Maid, they make my ears happy.
Excellent analysis from an expert. Dice and Onset are some of my many favorite songs and the very first ones I heard that got me hooked on Band Maid. Mincho is my guitar hero but I can't have a preference among these five fabulous women. However, Miku is definitely the most deserving, as she founded the band and did a colossal job of learning rhythm guitar and classical guitar to a level worthy of respect. Thank you so much.
I think I've heard their entire catalog many times over. *"Dice"* is one of the first ones I heard that made me realize what a great band they are and it's still one of my favorites. I think my favorite band member changes from day to day, Kanami because I play guitar (not like _that,_ but), MISA because I used to play bass (not like _that,_ but), Akane because she's so clever and has the feel of the song in her hands, Saiki because she delivers a song so well and she is mesmerizing to watch, and Kobato because of her iron will and determination.
By the way, you should consider reviewing *"Start Over."* It is somewhat controversial among certain fans - the music because it is pop-oriented (really _really_ well done, mind you) and compare and contrast it to *"Screaming"* which was the flip side of the single. Maybe a similar comparison between the opening track of the *"Conqueror*" album *"Page"* and the closing track *"Rinne"* ("Reincarnatioon"). "Page" sparked similar distress about their direction and "Rinne" should have allayed those fears.
Just on an aesthetic note, I love that she grew her hair longer. Sometimes she looks like some kind of drum monster and then her head goes back and The Smile is there
Just so your aware, when it comes time to record, Kanami borrows Miku's gear and records the parts. This is true through Unleash. Kanami has said she would like help on the recordings, but Miku is very busy. Miku of course learns the parts and plays them live and well. The recent full set fancam of the Pointfest show is great for checking out what Miku does with the guitar currently.
I think you are talking about Rockville. Fancam right up-front, arguably the best fancam of Band-Maid until now. Great sound and you can clearly see all members.
It is very difficult to pick your favorite maid so don't beat yourself up about it if you can't do it. (It's even harder trying to pick your favorite song.) In Onset it goes from 4/4 time, then to 5/4 time and then back to 4/4.
I completely agree with your opinion. Miku is a really brave and hard working girl. How would you feel if someone who had never played guitar before was asked by a talented musician to play together and release a music video? If it were me, I would leave a letter saying, "Don't look for me."
Started with "unseen world". Let's say I prefer their "recent" material more, just got 5 albums, and Misa+Akane have been "rythming" my days ever since.
Dice- World Domination album 2018. Learning guitar to keep up with this band is mind-blowing- "It's my band and I'm going to do it- watch me Po!". Probably the best song for solo's is Choose Me. Without Miku there is no Band-Maid. They do rap, jazz and even a bit of country-ish moments in one or two songs. Onset generally only played live up to a couple of years ago and only available on DVDs. Great reaction pal- just love it.
Second comment. As good as your ear is for the details, I would really love to hear your full analysis of “Blooming,” official music video. I won’t give you any hints about the song. Would you consider reacting to it?
My favourite maid? It's hard to pick as you can imagine. I'd say Akane, just love her style. I have soft spot for Saiki because her live vocal is so powerful, but not her studio vocal. But everyone has their charm and style and I love how they work together to make the impossible work.
You need Influencer for some straight up rap, and there are also a few songs with rap like vocals. I can't remember which song it was but I've heard someone describe one of the songs in the acoustic concert as having a Country vibe.
It's "Page," but more in a "modern country" female- singer expansive ballad-y way... some of which songs are actually good as opposed to the bro-country "Mah truck and beer" stuff.
Im a bass section guy. For me Misa and also Fami from Lovebites is my two favorite female bass players I've ever heard. Love bites and BandMaid is just amazing bands both of them. After those for me its Unleash the Archers and BattleBeast, Jinjer, Nightwish. But when it comes to all female bands and not only female lead singers. Bandmaid and Love Bites are the best there is. And better than about all male bands right now....
Miku's zemaitis is the ugliest sound from the prettiest guitar. I was reminded that the original metal front zemaitis was made for Tony Mcfee of the Groundhogs who died yesterday. He could do ugly really well.

Kanami playing a vocal part ? Interesting. Try "From now on", she'll scream the most impossible song to your face. Another level.
There is a akane focus only of dice out there and yes I love them all but have a special spot in my heart for akane the gorilla!❤❤😉💯💥

There is a backing track that adds some harmonies and counter melody to Kanami.
It's very sad that such cool reactions to Band-Maid come out so rarely😢
I'm very happy such cool reactions to Band-Maid keep coming out 😁
To your musing, yes. Saiki does a "rap" section in "Influencer " along with a double part Misa solo. For future consideration, i guess.
Just do what the pigeon says and nobody will get hurt po?
i think most of us have five favourites in this band
You are right. Each band made song is completely different.
Only one Band-Maid song is Different.
May just be my opinion, but how can you have a favorite when every member of Band Maid is so Phenomenal?
Onset alternates between 4/4 and 5/4
Miku as a guitar player is more proficient as a strummer, she sees more happy when she do it in Play, Sayonakidori, the extended intro for No God....
I've seen guitarists say they can't strum as fast as she does for the start of Black Hole. 💪🕊
