My Way of Starting Seeds in Trays Outside

- Here's an accessible method for starting seeds in trays outside spring through fall. Work with what you have, experiment, and avoid ground-dwelling insects altogether! I've been using this seed starting system for over two years without the need for the grow lights, timers, fans, or heating mats required for indoor growing.

Love it. I always wonder why people start seeds inside when it requires so much equipment and hardening off. I guess it makes sense for a headstart when it's cold and we're dreaming of spring
It's not just to give yourself something to do in the cold; it gives your plants more time to grow in the year so they end up reaching maturity faster. In some cases you can harvest them and plant more for a second harvest where the natural weather would have only allowed one.
I live in central Florida like you in zone 9a like your videos thanks for sharing your experience and I’m still learning
Thank you! ✨
Tyfs 👏🏾👏🏾💯😁
👍🏼✨
In TX as well. My seedlings fried. Ugh.
It’s been a tough season. I hope we get some good rain in October.
Need all the help I can get lol!!!
You got this! 🙌✨
Fort Worth gardener here. I have been in charge of my kids elementary school raised beds the last couple years. Your videos are my go to for TX insight. Thank you for sharing your experience. Wish I could find shade cloth at a brick and mortar store I always hesitate ordering from Amazon.
Thank you! Instead of Amazon, check out shadeclothstore.com
Question. I’m in the same zone central Texas. I’ve not had good luck growing carrots. They did germinate but were to close and grew tiny tiny carrots. Also grew them in a raised bed. I have sandy loam soil in my small in ground garden. Any pointers would be appreciated, also good varieties for this area. When is the best time.
Hello! I plant carrots from October through December and begin harvesting in March through June. Varieties such as Napoli, Scarlet Nantes, and Dragon have all done well. Here's a video with loads more tips if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/5ZYpSLvss6A/v-deo.html
I'm starting some seeds in March. They will get full sun on our south facing deck. As soon as they germinate and sprout, how much sun will they need? I like your shade cloth idea, but not sure when to use it.
They need 6-8 hours of sun after germinating. I utilize shade cloth when daytime highs exceed 75 👍🏼✨
Im in zone 8a Georgia. I started my seeds indoors, but will be transitioning them to the outside soon. How long do you wait before you thin them out?
Hey! I wait 2-4 weeks until second set of leaves develop and they look ready to grow
Would this method work in early spring? Would it be ok to bring plants inside at night so they don’t freeze?
In my experience yes! You can bring them inside for extra protection on the coldest nights no problem.
Off topic how is your bloomsweet doing?
It’s coming back nicely! I’ve been wanting to post an update about it for a long time. I’ve learned a lot from the process.
@newgardenroad That's good to hear. I'll wait for your update.
