Awesome!! I have been planting them recently and one issue has been pillbugs or ants nibbling/destroying them as they germinate. I have taken to check them regularly and apply diatomaceous earth as a deterrent to these pests. Once the peas have a second set of leaves, they should be able to get established.
@@newgardenroad Thanks for that advice. My garden has a lot of pillbugs so I will get some of that diatomaceous earth. I didn't get around to planting them today (too hot!). Thanks again and seriously love your channel. Stay cool.
hello from 5b Missoula MT!!! I've never grown cowpeas before, but I'm a renter trying to pack as much food as I can into my garden. I was excited to be able to fit a third option in between pole beans and snap peas! thank you so much for all of this information, I literally don't know a soul who has tried to grow these! already looking forward to harvest, both fresh and dried! thank you
So I am looking for a vining cowpea, do you think the red ripper would grow up a bean trellis, I really need it to grow more than 6 feet so it can clear the fence and get more light though?
Hi Jay, I found some calico crowder peas in my shed and I'm testing them for viability. I'm happy to give you some. If you're still interested send me an email scott@newgardenroad.com.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but it could point to poor pollination. They are self pollinating, but will be aided by pollinators or a gentle tap of the flowers. I hope they'll continue to develop for you as they often have a long production window.
Getting ready to plant some Blackeye peas this morning. Thanks for the great information!

I feel the same, from my youth❤️😀
😊✨
Great info, especially on harvesting and saving seeds.
Glad it was helpful!
Cowpea has always been a banger for Me, here in the CenTex area, black-eyd.
Salute Bradda
🙏🏼✨
Very entertaining as well as educational, Scott!
Thank you!

Very thorough. Thank you.

Hi! The red rippers will definitely climb, and mine seem to vine at least six feet. ✨
Can you freeze after peeling, folks used to do that down here in Wakulla.
Yes absolutely. I might blanch fresh peas prior to freezing, but I haven't actually done it before.
@@newgardenroad Thanks I'm going to have to try that, I just remember my Granny having Ziploc bags of them in her freezer Thank you so much!!
having trouble finding the calico crowder peas...could you spare a few peas so I can raise and save for next year?
Hello, I'll have to do some digging to see if I have any. I have been trying new varieties the past couple of years.

The issue I am having is the pods don't have that many seeds in them. The pod is nice and long but only 2 or 3 seeds in each pod.

Can you eat field pea shoots when the are small like sugar snap pea shoots?
I believe that you can.
How large are your beds for growing peas? I'm just getting started with the raised beds craze, and I don't have a green thumb!!
Hi! My raised beds are 4’x8’ and I generally space southern peas one plant per square foot. ✨
Are you the Mitch Hedberg of gardening?? 👀 Subscribe.
Haulright 😎
I heard the similarity too😁
🥰
Please grow me a castle made of blackened peas. Make sure there is room for 3 dogs and a cat.
That sounds like a lovely summer garden oasis.
I would hit the like button but I would be the 666 so it’s a nope for me!!
