My garden usually reaches what I call "jungle mode" this time of year, and this year is no exception. I didn't get out at all for a few weeks because of wildfire smoke, only to find that everything has absolutely exploded in height during that time. My sunflowers are several feet taller than me, my wildflowers are blooming in full glory, and my New Zealand spinach is growing faster than I can eat it. It's the most wonderful time of the year!
I watched you garden diaries video in which you say you're out of water for one of the gardens just yesterday, and it's so good to hear that you're finally getting some rain!
Thank you Huw, this kind of videos are always welcome. Sometimes I forget that I can still plant something in my garden and you help me to keep the garden keep on going
Mine bolted too. Here in the south of England we had a long wet spring and then it got too hot, too quickly. Everything bolted. Pak Choi prefer the cooler weather so I'll be sowing some more over the coming days for planting out in shadier spots as the summer cools. I have heard that the purple variety is less prone to bolting and slug damage, but I found mine bolted and got slugged regardless. I'll give them another try though! Good luck x
Yes, not so much the climate, but the low temps in winter. I'm in zone 8b but my climate is very different from other 8b areas. It's not a very useful tool except maybe when thinking about which plants might freeze out over winter. In my older age I am more of a "try it anyway" gardener 😊
Good information! Just what I needed as we lost most of our summer crops to multiple hail storms and excessive rain in Colorado. My motto when losing crops is to just keep sowing/growing until you can’t sow/grow no mo’!
Most of what he said will still work for Colorado. This year has been a struggle for sure in CO! 😅 When the hail kills the plants ..plant moms go shopping..lol. I'm the same..just replace em and move on. We call that determination 💪.
Just started our first garden here in Wyoming, surprisingly everything is growing fine 😄 we've been extremely lucky in terms of avoiding hail this year 👍
Great video. Here in Missouri I like to start growing some of these cooler plants as late as September 1, and then I can harvest them in November or December. Doesn't always work out, but July and August are too damn hot still :)
Great information as usual Huw, thanks very much. Sowed dwarf French beans, beetroot, kohl rabi and savoy cabbage yesterday in NE Scotland 🤩 Now, what else shall I sow 🤔😁
I can honestly attest to how awesome Huw's module trays are!! I have wasted so much money over the past few years with the cheap, flimsy trays you get from big box stores. Huw's trays are the right size and very durable...I wish could have had these years ago!
I second that. Second year using them. I have to get domes to use with them to keep the humidity in and they will be perfect. The only thing I use the others for is to start a few extras away.
Watched your video after a major weeding and tomato tie up session. Lots of thistle and crab grass so I need a day or 2 of rest before getting some succession plantings going. Been thinking of lettuce, chard and kale.
I'm trying New Zealand spinach for the first time. Perhaps I planted it in too much shade as it seems slow to size up. Any other spinach just bolts no matter what I do. Bush beans, well why have all the varieties for the past three years got long tendrals and I need to stake the plants. Perhaps it is the changed climate. Once known as the west (wet) coast of Canada, has now been in a year round drought for a few years. No luck here with a bit of self sufficiency! Hoping for some potatoes from my twelve large grow bags. Planting in July, heck I have not harvested anything other than lettuce and spring onions from my earlier plantings? Never say never, carry on gardening!
I've planted NZ spinach for the first time this year too, and it's done the opposite, it's completely overrunning its corner of the garden. I tried starting it in trays at first, and it didn't take off at all, but then I direct sowed in heavily composted soil, and it's done really well. Took almost two months to get there though.
I live in the same region, planted "white" turnips in semi-shade, they're doing well so far. For lettuce over winter, I bought some "Landis Winter CO" from B.C. Eco Seed Co-op (UBC I think) that still are growing from last year, even with snow. West Coast seeds have a shorter cropping leaf spinach, 25 days, called "Seaside".
Thanks! Loving your dimples as well as your wisdom. Up here in northern Wisconsin, our veggies are just getting underway. Still having 50F degree nights. We eat all winter from our larder. Fermented, freezing, dehydrating, cold storage. Thank you from up north!🫶

I love fennel and think it is such a value crop as it is relatively expensive to buy. Unfortunately I fail every time and it always bolts despite the fact i grow them in rich, manured soil and water really well. Any tips please? Thank you :-)
I'm watching from Sjælland in Denmark, just drooling over your onions! Had no garden this year, too busy. Did manage to grow three varieties of chilis lasy year- now fermented and in the fridge. For you coriander fans, try some in a run-of-the-mill pilsner. Better than lemon!
my peas got the blight.... within 5 days they were completely dead :( they were looking so good and the pods were just starting to fatten up ,,luck in unluck they were away from my main crops, potatoes cabbage tomatoes, etc, first time I've ever had that happen,I'm just a bit peeved, still trying to work out why, same are for almost 20 years, soil always fresh, mulch every spring , no over watering or under watering, strange..anybody else have the same problem?
I emailed you a few months ago asking about whether your module trays will be made available in Canada? I really like them and would love to see if I can get them at an affordable price.
Best thing about a fall garden is that if it fails in the spring you have another shot! We can even plant shorter day corn up to the first week of July and usually get a crop.
I wish UA-cam would have a search feature for channels’ video section. 😢 would love to know if you ever posted a video about growing self sufficient plants aimed at apartment owners. I may not have a garden but I do have an extra room I’d love to use to grow some yummy plants.
All of the ones mentioned here are easily grown in buckets or containers - just get creative 😊 try your favourite veg or herbs first and branch out. Good luck!
I planted lettuce and carrots in the same large pot very successfully. Also trying potatoes in pots but haven’t harvested them yet. I have zucchini in pots and am training them vertically. I have harvested two so far here in zone 7 NC.
Hi Huw, can red cabbage be sown now? For some reason I put a bunch of seeds in a tray after reading something and now I can’t remember why. Is it too late? I have a polytunnel also.
Hi Huw, as usual a great inspirational video from you! Hypothetical question: I have just harvested a bed of kohlrabi. Is it advisable to, on that very same plot, to grow Napa cabbage/pak Choi? I understand that they all belong to brassicas. Thanks in advance!
I have grown brassicas in succession in the same bed with no adverse effects. Just make sure you add a bit of compost and fertilizer as brassicas tend to be heavy feeders. I would advise against it only if the pest/disease pressure was already high with your initial batch of brassicas I would recommend doingthe crop rotation next year.
Alot of people hype up the sarpo Mira potatoes but sadly I cannot for the life of me find any here in America to try growing for myself. I also can't find anyone willing to import them. Not sure if there are laws preventing it but it stinks that I can't find them to try them myself.
Unless you can’t grow anything else because of blight, I wouldn’t lose sleep over any of the sarpos being available. Tbh, I rather not grow any potatoes at all than grow, wash, prepare, cook and butter Sarpo Mira. They just don’t taste right to me. They also have a crunchy texture, like raw turnip. [Sorry Huw 😬]
I have seeds that won't sprout this year. Tried 3 packs of nemesia, 3 packs of peppers and 2 packs of China asters. Also tried three brands of compost. The only thing I see that's unusual is a whopping load of compost gnats this year. Never seen so many. Could they be the cause of all those packets of seeds failing?
Thank you for clarifying which grow in winter! I am enjoying my first garden just planted a few weeks ago and am going to need to prepare for fall and winter!
For some reason your video turns into a green screen on my phone! They are normally perfect and I only get this weird effect when watching embedded videos in news type sites. Is my phone responsible? I will try again on laptop.
I am assuming that when you say "sow" you mean direct seeding or sowing seeds into trays for transplanting later. Many of the shots show transplants, which I assume is more visually interesting than seeding into trays but is a little confusing. Lol, as an American I always assume I’m misunderstanding something.
Huw could you help with this please? I'm having terrible problems getting green (french) bean seeds to germinate, even when warm like now the success rate has been about 5 - 10%! How can I get them to come up without them rotting away?
Try to get them to sprout in water first. It might help. Also, beans I believe extract high levels of nitrogen. You may need to add extra for them to grow properly.
I'm in South Carolina and it's an oven outside. I feel like going outside for 5 minutes is going to give me cancer. I dread going out there just to water stuff.
Ahh well it’s too burning hot here in Kansas with temps over 100F from July to September. Not sure what I can plant to fill the gaps from the potato harvest
My garden is a disaster this year because of the weather. First it was way too cold and wet, then too hot and dry and it's back to rain now. Good year for fruit, but not vegetables.
I think he and Charles Dowding call it mult sowing. They are faster to plant in clusters and are happy to grow so close together. No idea which video he talks about it, but look up muti sowing. More efficient to plant for ant plant that tolerates the closenes
