    I didn’t do this. I sprinkled on potting soil then watered it. Put it in a sunny window and there were sprouts the next day. I sprinkle a little water on top every day. Not a full watering, just a little spray to keep it moist. They’re thriving so far.

      An annoy procedure where you take your plants outside for a week or so. Slowly introducing them to sun and win. There are some really good videos on how to do it.

      Plant adjust their photosynthesis rate depending on environment but this process takes time. Indoor they'll adjust it to max setting (light-wise / temperature-wise) to compensate lack of light / heat. Bringing them out to real hot sun while they are in this setting then they'll over-synthesize and create a too much leftover dangerous compounds (reactive oxygen molecules, normally they are neutralized but too much then they are left roaming inside the plant and deal damage)

    So…don’t these seeds need darkness to germinate? If so, at what point do you introduce some light?

    • @5argon
      @5argon Місяць тому

      I had grown creeping thyme and it also requires surface sowing. I found that critical thing is to not compact the soil and left them fluffy / uneven like in the video, otherwise right after they germinate they can be blown off the surface before they can root further.

    I started growing creeping thyme seeds and at first they looked like thyme seeds, but now they look more like weeds. The leaves aren't small like your 2 pots, but do resemble the leaves of some of the plants in the 3rd pot that are bigger. Is that thyme or weeds?

    • @kitgenz1114
      @kitgenz1114 2 місяці тому

      It probably IS thyme but not a creeping thyme. I am convinced that growers don't know what thyme they are selling. I purchased a plant from a nursery that was marked as Lemon Thyme "Silver Queen" and it is supposed to get 9" to 1' tall with pink flowers. But what is growing is 3" tall with white flowers.

    Coco Coir and used coffee grounds warmed in sunny window before starting seed?
    Could that be advised? Great video.

    • @TheMash84
      @TheMash84 Рік тому

      There's no soil life to break down coffee grounds in coco coir.
      Also, coffee ground is quite acidic and can lower the PH of your coco coir, which should be almost neutral PH (6.8/7).
      Stay away from coffee grounds unless you're planting in garden soil, where bacterias can properly break down the nitrogen and make it available to plants.
      If you put coffee grounds in coco coir it'll stay forever, and kill probably your seeds/seedlings.
      Seeds don't need fertiliser to germinate. Use fertiliser when they have an established first set of TRUE leaves (not the cotyledons, which are the leaves that pops out first from the seed).
      To fertilise, use a liquid fertiliser at very low rate (1-0.5-1 NPK) after you got the first true set of leaves.
      I suggest a liquid fertiliser as it's already to be absorbed by the roots. Choose organic or inorganic fertiliser.
      E.g. if your liquid fertiliser is 5-2-5 NPK and the normal dosage is 5ml per litre, to obtain 1-0.5-1 NPK just divide by 5 (ml/litre).
      To successful grow the seedling you'll have to provide at least 6-8h of direct sunlight from your window, which can be hard during the winter.
      In that case I'd suggest using a grow light.
      I've tried to summarise all the basic information, indoor growing can be very complex!
      Hope it helps.

    Can i request a video how to plant Rosemary from SEEDS, I have been waiting my rosemary for more than a week, still no sprout, I tried putting my soil seedling in the refrigerator for stratification, but still not working

    • @TheAberrantGardener
      @TheAberrantGardener  Рік тому

      Thank you for visiting! If I recall correctly, rosemary takes a WHILE to pop up! As long as you didn't bury the seeds too deeply, you should see some activity soon enough. Put them in a warm/sunny place for a few days and keep the soil moist. Basil is quick to sprout, I surface sowed it and it's been about 5/6 days- I just started seeing roots forming yesterday. I'd give the rosemary a good 3 weeks before giving up! If you think you planted too deeply, throw 3-4 seeds on top of the wet dirt and throw some plastic wrap or a clear lid on the container before placing in the sun. That way, if the seeds are too deep, you'll be several days into germination time for the new ones, just in case! 😊

    Does thyme need a lot of spacing to thrive? Last time I tried to grow creeping thyme from seeds and they got to maybe 6" before slowly dying off :C
    They were grown in one of those 6-pack seed starter trays and i never transplanted them

    • @TheAberrantGardener
      @TheAberrantGardener  Рік тому

      Thank you for visiting! I haven't grown creeping thyme, but I find that thyme enjoys mounding. They enjoy cooler weather, damp areas, and a bit of shade at times. There are so many reasons they could have died off... They could have been too wet/dry, not enough nutrients, or too hot (especially if they were in the sun in dark trays.) Sometimes plants are incredibly sensitive, and it takes multiple attempts and research to figure out the problem. But most importantly, please try again!!! Thank you for visiting and good luck with your next attempt! 🙂

    So not need to water the seed but just keep the soil in the water? Do thyme need water frequently?

    • @TheAberrantGardener
      @TheAberrantGardener  2 роки тому +1

      If the soil begins to dry out, just bottom water the pot 😁 plastic wrap over the top will help to keep moisture in until sprouting too! I use the surface sow method with thyme, lavender, rosemary, dill, oregano, mint, and so many more. It seems like it wouldn't work, but the results are wonderful. Best of luck, and let me know how your seedlings are doing in a few weeks! ☺️ Thank you for visiting my channel!

      Also, a great way to determine if a plant needs water is by sticking your finger 1" into the soil- if it's moist at that depth, no water needed. If the sides of the soil are pulling away from the pot, it needs water as well. Thyme loves water, and a thyme cutting will even root in water. It's a very forgiving plant!

      The seeds you sowed looked like they were .5mm round. Are they the edible thyme?
      The Red ground cover seeds I Orders/received are about a 1/8 inch long w/a teardrop shape. I can only guess that they are the creeping ground cover perennial version. I’m hoping to grow a red flowering ground cover.

    How often should you water

    • @TheAberrantGardener
      @TheAberrantGardener  2 роки тому

      Thyme is a pretty forgiving plant when it comes to water, but a great rule of thumb is when the soil begins to pull away from the sides of the pot, you should water. You can also stick your finger 1" into the soil, and if it's dry, water. Sometimes it will look dry on the surface, but the bottom is quite wet. Keeping the pot in a shallow tray will keep water off the roots, while having a wicking effect (the soil will draw water upwards as needed.) I hope this helps! Thank you for visiting, Zacari! 🙂

    Very nice video and explanation. My thyme seeds germinated. I used cocopeat as germinating medium. Please suggest me what type of liquid fertilizer I should use. Please reply. Thanks

    • @TheAberrantGardener
      @TheAberrantGardener  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Syed! Once the first true leaves come in, you could start fertilizing at half-strength with a liquid fertilizer. Opt for a balanced fertilizer for now- once seedlings have established, up-pot into a potting mix, and later your could begin using a fertilizer that has a higher nitrogen content (unless potting mix has fertilizer in it, in which case I'd wait 6 weeks.) Thank you for visiting and watching, and congratulations on your thyme seedlings! 🌱🙂

      syed,do you put indoor for indoor light or at balcony for partial sunlight?

    • @TheMash84
      @TheMash84 Рік тому

      @@jackyquek7326 To germinate they don't need light (at least a very low amount to give the direction to the seed where to head the leaves and break the surface).
      Once sprouted, you'll need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight (not indirect from a window).
      If you don't have such amount of sunlight, the option is using LED grow light. In that case they need 14-16h of light and the light needs to be close to the seedlings to avoid it reaching for the light and grow leggy.

    • @TheMash84
      @TheMash84 Рік тому

      To germinate they don't need direct sunlight.
      To grow healthy seedlings you need at least 6-8h of direct sunlight.
      Indoor without sunlight will grow you seedlings leggy and they'll eventually die off.

    How long does it take for thyme to germinate?

    • @TheAberrantGardener
      @TheAberrantGardener  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Aldren! It only takes a few days! It can actually vary based on room temperature and whether or not the seed was sown beneath the soil. Surface sown in a warm room, shortest germination time. Sown beneath the soil in a cool or unheated room, much longer germination time. Give them 3-10 days, and you should see some life. They can still sprout after that point, but if nothing by then, they may have been sown too deeply.
