Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Man I’m so new to this. I am a house plant lover. I just picked up what is labeled as a All natural, soluble soil additive. It’s a powder potash. Listed at 8-1-5. Any experts out there have thoughts on this product? Any help or tips would be awesome!

Bloody brilliant garden expose’ on how, when, what and importantly, why.
Most people I meet when I’m pottering around in my vege patch openly declare they don’t have green thumbs like me.

Thank you Gary. 3 years later and it’s still making sense. My produce leaves, Coco we call it in the Islands is curling and I am drying banana peels now to add potassium. Also I have been saving peels from potatoes, carrots, and green bananas soaking them in water and pouring on my plants weekly and they always look lush within hrs after.

Thank you so much for breaking down the chemistry. I appreciate your unbiased opinions through your trial and error experimentation and observation. While I have been gardening successfully for over 15 years, I do however run into issues w/regards to chemistry where I am not too familiar with--so I am grateful for channels like yours that offers a wealth of information, which therefore allows me more choices of what I can and cannot do in my own trial and error experimentation in my garden. Your channel is a wealth of substantial information. I appreciate you.

Thank You for such an in depth, honest video! Love the digital table of content and the fact that you condensed all this info into one video. Another really good source of nitrogen for your plants is rain fall from thunderstorms. The lightning creates nitrogen fixation creating nitrates and ammonia. If you've had thunderstorms recently, no need to add nitrogen. Rain and rivers are the best source of water for your plants, as most tap water plants strip out nitrates because they are bad for babies and it contain chloride. Prolonged watering with high levels of chloride inhibits plants from properly taking up nitrates, thus the need for fertilizers with soluble nitrogen.

That intro alone gets like, thank you for the talk on natural and man-made fertilisers. I cannot begin to say how many times I have to explain it. Esp when I talk about my hydroponics and they think the food from it is poison.

You do an excellent job going into so much detail. Just a suggestion - for visual learners like me, it would be infinitely helpful to see actual live examples or at least good quality photos of some of the things you describe, such as what nutrient deficiencies look like. Especially when taking in so much information, comparing problems that have only subtle differences, not already knowing what these things look like & trying to troubleshoot by imagining by your description. Still tremendously helpful - thank you!

Awesome video. I love how you explained organic and chemical fertilizers. Not many people know that plants cant tell the diffrence. I have been growing for over ten years and have always used salts. They work very good. I will mention that I do use a whole lot of diffrent beneficial bacteria and fungi. Microbes work really good in conjunction with chemical fertilizers. They enable you to use alot less fertilizer. They are like little soldiers full of food that deliver nutrition to the rhizophere. The way plants and microbes communicate is truly amazing. Great video keep them coming.

Feeding The Soil Organisms............ if you feed your organisms too much they wont exchange with your plants too salty and folks move out of the neighborhood then there is no one to pay/feed the carbon dealer- however from growing cannabis hydroponically in the distant past with just water soluble nutes/ chemicals I know and have observed that plants are capable of up-taking straight water soluble nutrients without any organism middlemen/ carbon customers living in the neighborhood.... if one is growing in soil organically those organisms just don't like swimming in the salt lake/dead sea :P awesome video thanks again!

I commented this on another Rusted Garden video but I think it would serve more purpose posted here too. I was at Walmart today to get some fertilizer for container veggies. I compared the ingredients and ignored the name and instead of spending $5 for 4 lbs, I got an 8lb bag for $7.00! It is an organic bulb food that is 3-5-4. I plan to use it for container herbs, cucumbers, and some flowers, as well as a top dressing for some of the veggies in the garden.

What an awesome informative video. Too much Nitrogen can make tomatoes to appear to have a calcium deficiency also. When people blindly throw calcium at tomatoes with no apparent change it’s because too much nitrogen is hampering the plants ability to use the calcium it needs.

You are probably right regarding chemical fertilizers, it's the same chemical in organic ones, but with chemical fertilizers the chance of having these direct chemicals in your food is pretty high depending on the crop, another disadvantage is that you wouldn't be helping the soil remain alive with an ecosystem of bacteria and fungi, which are necessary for long lasting soil. Organic fertilizers are not as fast acting as chemical ones, but in the long run they are probably the best option for the soil and the consumers.
I've always wondered about the cardboard tasting vegetables that we buy at the supermarket, all of them are grown with chemical fertilizers, many of them hydroponically. Is the lack of taste due to the fertilizers or the genes used?

Very good presentation and well balanced showing both organic and synthetic options. Most videos I have seen focus on organic options and imply that synthetic is bad, which it is not if it is used properly. The main thing is to give the plants what it needs for optimal growth nothing more; nothing less.

I adore watching your comprehensive videos. Very practical. Economical and enjoyable.
Plus your passion for nature . I live in London England ,and your methods are similar to what we do. Just the products are not the same. Also we tend not to use peat soil as we want to save our peat bogs. I am very interested in your galvanised containers and metal supports.bravo. Lynn

Cheers. Canada sends us a lot of peat. Id love to come see garden across England one day.

great vid, helped me figure out that i has missed calculated and over fertalized my seedlings. I ran distilled water though all of them and am hoping they will bounce back as they were not to far gone. If they dont it puts me one month behind this season.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

That could help wash out the build up. Good luck. Might want to start some now too. Just as a a backup.

Great channel you have. I love it.
I have a question for you or as many of your viewers as possible.
I put a lot of grass clippings on top of my garden last fall 15' x 25'. The clippings were pretty thick around 6" or so. Now they are about 2" - 3" thick.
What would you recommend that I do ? (1) Turn them into soil in the early spring ? (2) Leave them there and plant as usual using it as a mulch ? (3) Add what little brown materials that I have and plant as usual or turn into soil. (4) Remove most of it and start a compost pile through out the season ?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Excellent break down. I have moved towards organic fertilizers but I completely agree with most of what he said. Although ever since I moved away from Cutting Edge Solutions I no longer have huge salt stains on my bags after each grow. Also the final product has.been much more smooth. It's just anecdotal evidence but I will continue to stick with what works

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

Yep mostly organic and even more compost but occasional use of the others wont harm

This is great. Everything that I learned in soil science. Add some amonium sulfate to your compost pile. The bacteria will love it.
