Solka’s sexism arc in the original doesn’t seem controversial to me. If you look at his life through Sokka’s eyes his views are completely reasonable. He grew up in a tribe as the son of the warrior leader of the tribe. His tribe exclusively had male warriors which was even even more crucial since they no longer had waterbenders. Could the women have fought, maybe but we can’t deny in extreme circumstances people naturally revert to the gender roles and these were definitely extreme circumstances. Someone had to stay and raise the kids and that would naturally be the women/moms. So Sokka growing up in a culture of only male warriors and female nurturers means he’s going to think that’s what all men and women do. Once he’s confronted with the truth he quickly changes tune. That’s commendable being capable of having your mind changed is a good character trait of Sokka’s and it’s a huge part of his character arc in Book 1. I’d be disappointed if it’s not somewhat apart of the live action.

I recently rewatched the entire show and the kyoahi island a bit feels off to me .
The Island is quite singular for having a group of fighting women AND ONLY Fighting WOMEN . No man to be seen near any weapon whatsoever .
It made me wonder, "where are the men" ?
I know that a huge portion of the male population is fisherman (or have other jobs) , but aren't there at least one who can fight?
Suki even accepted to teach Sokka , an outsider (although traveling with the avatar himself), how to fight . Suggesting that they are not opposed to teaching and taking men , but this also suggestes that men on kyoshi island purposefully DON'T want to join the fighting force
And that they would rather hide in their houses in case of an attack and let young girls fight than participate in any shape or form .
Making them look like probably the most coward people in the avatar universe (close to Yon Ra and chin the conqueror villagers level of cowardice) , at least in my eyes .
(This episode seems like it tries to beat sexism with another type of sexism)

The copium is real with the Sokka situation. The sexism was probably my favorite trait of his because there are very little works in media that activelly show characters admiting they are wrong and growing from their mistakes. It's always only ever the villains that are shown to have those traits only for them to be defeated. Teaching young boys that it's okay to admit you're wrong and grow from it is not a bad thing and I hate that they took that away in the live action.

idk why people require this so much from Sokka. I always felt like his sexism was so out of pocket and weird. It was a barrier for me to liking him ngl. I don't think it's integral to his character in any way. When I think of Sokka, I don't think of his sexism, but rather his humour and play-boy attitude lol. I don't mind them removing it at all, there's other ways that Sokka has grown throughout the series.

There is one thing I don't like at all from all the pictures and trailers that we got. And that is that Zuko never looks angry. And Zuko being and acting angry in S1 is extremely important for his character and it ties with lots of important scenes later. It's conected to him not being able to create lightining, the mountaintop scene, the beach scene, him losing his powers in s3, etc. I worry that having Azula and Ozai in S1 will put Zuko in the victim role right from the start (he should enter thar role in s2). That would be killing one of the best written character arcs ever. Zuko must be the main antagonist in S1. The audience must hate him in s1 for his arc to work.

    • @OhHeyItsShey
      @OhHeyItsShey 8 місяців тому +29

I agree. None of the clips I've seen seem to really represent Zukos character well. Hoping they are just the quieter/less talkative segments and we get a lot more of that rage from him. If not his character is a bit lost/pointless to some degree. Especially with Azula and Ozai in this season. Im also going to be very disappointed if they have removed Sokka's sexist attitude. That is a HUGE character building plot point for him, just like Zukos rage is. Along with Aangs silliness.

A behind the scenes with the producers of the Netflix Avatar the last airbender show on youtube that I found by chance, as a result of the new trailer dropping, the day the new trailer dropped, revealed that in designing the costumes, the Netflix producer noted that the waves, ripples, swirling water, and patterns of water changing state are found on the clothing of waterbenders like Katara, while non-benders of the water tribe like Sokka have fixed geometries in the patterns of their water tribe clothing.
The waves on Katara’s water tribe outfit indicate she is a waterbender. The Triangles / fixed geometry of Sokka’s water tribe outfit indicate he is a non-bender. According to some behind the sceenes each tribe has clothing that indicate bender or non-bender for water, earth and fire. (All airbenders are benders intrinsically).
The producer said “…watch for it, even in earth kingdom, and fire nation outfits, benders and non-benders will be indicated by distinguishable clothing patterns connected to the appropriate bending element, or fixed static patterns (I.e. not all fire nation soldiers are firebenders) if one is paying attention.” It is a new aspect/detail that the producers / costume designers added as an Easter Egg. It also helped distinguish on set bending actors/actresses from non-bending actors/actresses to assist in keeping the choreography and appropriate actions consistent for individual scenes.

Aang in a happy mood, Katara nervous because she just stole the water scroll, Sokka kind of neutral. Also we know the water scroll scene happens because of the Katara short 12 second video where she is looking at a water bending scroll. Honestly the fact that "the whole cast" watches you gives me more hope than anything up to this point (I was already pretty optimistic). Just the fact that they seem to care so much about the source material and their fans is enough, but the fact that it's YOU just makes it better. It's easy to get caught up in emotions when it comes to shows that meant a lot to us, and definitely has a nostalgia factor, but right from the get go, you have given such measured and objective takes on everything that has been revealed over time along with very constructive criticisms, and very reasonable expectations. Speaking of expectations, I love that you understand that this will not be a 1:1 retelling and that creative liberties will have to be taken to take full advantage of the difference strengths/weakness' of the different mediums (animation Vs. live action) and honestly I agree, as you have said in previous videos, that a 1:1 retelling would be boring! At the end of the day, I'm looking for a faithful adaptation that respects the overall feel, themes, and message from the original!

This feels even more evident considering that the Mechinest is going to be in Omashu instead of the Northern Air Temple. I kinda wonder if they are going to tweak how the fire nation find out about his tech like maybe they go the more realistic route of finding his inventions or maybe he is in Omashu because it is the only place he thinks is safe from the fire nation and part of Azula and Ozai's motive for taking Omashu has to do with getting their hands on the Mechinest. Also possible Azula, Mai, and Ty-Lee could have a plan to infiltrate Omashu and kidnap the Mechinest, further explaining why Bumi surrendered and help setup the tension between Mai, Ty-Lee, and Azula and explain why Mai family is the ones in charge of Omashu.

Yeah, Sokka's sexism is also portrayed different than the sexism in the Northern water tribe and that means a lot.
The show did a great example on how 'ignorant sexism' can easily be overcome by the truth Sokka discovers, but 'taught sexism', like if part of a tradition/culture, is much more harder to beat in which KATARA discovers.
They BOTH beat it though is the point. They shouldn't remove it from the show, but just be careful about it.
I think that's what they did though.
    Hopefully 😅
Edit: Btw the one who beats the hardest one, was a woman (Katara) which furthers reaffirms Sokka's lesson about women by seeing his sister be not only top of the class but also a prodigy and a waterbending -master's favorite student.
Trust that if they don't portray sexism to beat with Sokka they'll do it with the northern watertribe. If not? They have failed entirely to see the lesson in the show. Which would be.... dissapointing-BUT I have high hopes! 😭❤️
The show has many other lessons.

@balrog8moriab8m85 it makes better sense to be traditional Chinese in the way it is written since it is in ancient setting.
The best part about the original series is that these Chinese sentences makes sense. They became sort of like Easter eggs for Chinese audiences.
Some of the sentences and paragraphs are beautifully written like poetry I recall I was impressed that even an American cartoon can get it right.
I learned from somewhere they actually hired a language expert from Taiwan for these.
I hope netflix continued will that too.

I understand toning down sexist Sokka makes sense, as stuff that's funny when animated can be really cringe in live action; but I hope it's just toned down and not gone. Sokka learning to not be a douche was a very good message that's particularly relevent nowadays, it would be a missed opportunity to skip it entirely.

I get that they're terrified of making Sokka sexist, as it could turn away a lot of new viewers, but it absolutely makes sense for him to be sexist at the beginning, given the culture and circumstances he grew up in. And given how quickly he was humbled, I never saw it as too much of an issue. I hope they'll at least compensate it with his arrogance.

While I’m a bit dissspointed about Sokka character change i kinda understand also cuz the way they pry rated his sexism was very black and white and juvenile. It worked for a kids cartoon but irl i don’t think it’d translate as well. I do hope they maybe still keep the element of machismo he had in the beginning to still keep part of the character while still refining it for an older audience,

The beautifully thing about Avatar is that all the characters start off flawed but learn more balanced perspectives throughout their journey. Aang accepting growing up, Zuko living for himself rather than others, Katara letting go of control, Toph learning to accept help and Sokka learning to be humble and leaning into his strengths. Undoing any of these major character arcs would be a poor decision IMO

Given how other shows such as the Wheel of Time series went I may just have been burnt once too often but I don't see it going well with just the changes we know of already. Combine that with how expensive CGI is and the amount they will need to pull off good looking bending skills and I am worried it will be very similar to WoT where they start strong but by the end it just looks bad and has too many inconsistencies due to the changes they made.

Sexism is the most important thing about this show it lead to the 2 biggest plot points of the show.
    1. If it wasn't for Sokka's sexism Aang would have never been discovered in the iceberg.
    2. If the Northern Water Tribe hadn't forced Katara into a healing class there's no guarantee she would've known how to save Aang's life after Azula essentially killed him in the Avatar State.

I don't like the idea of removing Sokka's character arc or growing out of his naive sexism, he grows over the course of the show in many ways, he's one of the most interesting characters of the core cast because of his flaws and how he changes over time. Showing character growth in a show like that creates a more empowering message than it does ignoring it and leaving it out.

Also, I think Sakka's character growth with the Kuroshi warriors, could be done simply by not making him sexist from the get go, but just dealing with all that within the episode within the village. I think (and understandably) netflix was probably worried about people hearing some of the stuff Sakka says in the first episode and jumping on the hate bandwagon without watching the rest of the show and seeing how Sakka grows. Honestly it is understandable given social tensions and the way "cancel culture" works. People tend to be very quick to pick up there pitchforks and torches without fully understanding something.

I understand why some changes are necessary in live action, but changing the characters personality is unnecessary and really will water down how the characters grow.
