Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

So I’m a beginner gardener. Were those slips? Or did you plant the whole potato? I saw so many DIFFERENT methods I got very confused. So I just planted the whole potato halfway in the ground like one video suggested. I do have lots of leaves that have come up, do I need to separate those at this point and plant each slip into the ground? Thank you so much if someone could answer

I grew sweet potatoes in a tub like yours outside and got a great haul... the vines actually went through the bottom of the pot and into the ground and grew more potatoes there! I used a livestock panel behind the pot and trained the vines onto the panel held up by t-bars to keep the vines from going everywhere - worked perfectly but did need to remember to water as my soaker hose watering system wasn't available to the sweet potatoes. So easy to just dump the pot out on a tarp and harvest the sweet potatoes got some huge ones weighing several pounds! My vines even flowered.

I just have to tell you just how much I enjoy the two of you. I've been watching other homesteaders they are ok but you are all around farmers almost like my grandparents you have a handle on the whole of small farming scope. I've been envious watching you have the life I've dreamed of most of my life and was denied by life. I'm now getting up there age wise and I'm able to live a much smaller scale but still kicking it out as health and age allow. I can't wait for Wednesdays to join you I am still learning and that is a blessing. THANK YOU so much for sharing your day with me. God Bless and keep you in all you are. Love you guys.

How nice to have such a wonderful greenhouse! It's like having 2 spring seasons. You don't have to compost your rabbit manure. You can put it right onto your soil whether it's outside or in the greenhouse. Any pelletized manure won't burn your plants and doesn't need to be composted. So if you can get goat, sheep, alpaca, llama, deer etc. you can use that too besides the rabbit manure. Love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing. P.S. the smaller veggies are usually the best. Small sweet potatoes roast really well. ;)

Hi Sarah and Kevin. That size sweet potato are perfect for me to roast in the oven or in the fire. I spent a few years in Malaya as a child between the ages of 7-10 and I spent more time with the malayan communities in the Kampongs than I did at home at that's where I learnt that the smaller sizes are the sweetest and not as mealy or stringy. They always ate the purple/maroon skinned type with white flesh inside. I don't eat any other kind to be honest. These have been my favourites since then and now I am 65 going on 66 in Dec and I still love them. Michelle

We were in a community garden and life happened for one of the gardeners resulting in the baby bok choy going to seed. Spring came along and by the time her winter cover crop could be tilled in, there were root systems that needed to be raked out. But there was also a fresh green covering of seedlings within 2 week-ends and a dread that some weed had let loose. It was baby bok choy and ultimately the plot owner worked in baby bok choy as green manuer and weed suppression system for use during the seasons.

I noticed that you grew your sweet potatoes under shade cloth the last couple of years. The key to big sweet potatoes is full sun. I think if you moved the sweet potato tubs out of the greenhouse next year, you would be surprised at the difference.

Last night had the first threat of a frost down here in Texas. NE Texas did get a freeze. We rarely get a hard freeze till Christmas, so my citrus are staying out till then. I have a lemon, lime, and Satsuma. My Satsuma has 7 on it. Been waiting for the cool snap for them to finish ripening and sweeten off. It's actually good for you to pick off the fruit the first year, so they put their effort into good roots, but I had to leave a few. They are good down to about 27 degrees for short periods, so I'm not too worried. Next year, they go into the ground and I'll build PVC frames with plastic to cover them during hard freezes. It will be back up to the 80's by the weekend, so back to short-sleeves.

Another way to do the shade cloth is to have it on rolls inside the greenhouse at the top of the wall. If you unroll it (or have machinery do the job when the sun is too bright) on top of wires, they hold it up high and out of the way and out of the weather and wind. So you can roll or unroll your shade cloth from indoors even if it is raining and have less of a chore to deploy or take back from the roof top. All it takes is study support wires from the top of one wall to the top of another wall.

We already had two days with frost here on the S. Plateau over a week ago. Yesterday it dropped to 30, this morning it's 26 and tomorrow will be the same. I really need a greenhouse.

I have somehow kept a cherry tomato plant alive during our Central Texas summer (grown in a container) and it has finally started setting blooms again and producing fruit. Anxious to see just ho much longer.

In one of my favorite books of life on the prairie, Days Of My Life: Memories Of A Kansas Mother And Teacher: Menninger, Flo V., They used to hang tomato plants upside down in the barn when the season ended, to let the tomatoes continue to ripen

Hey y'all! My grandmother use to make green tomato pickles with the leftover tomatoes. Oh, they were so good! I bet those cherry tomatoes would be great as pickles 😋

Cant wait to see the inside of the house. I have mexican lime, Valencia Orange & Meyer Lemon dwarf trees & they stay in the stone courtyard near the stucco of the home or the stone on the courtyard walls during winter bc they hold in heat & they keep the trees warm in winter, as we get lots of freezes & a lil bit of snow. Good to kno about the baby bokchoy.

LOLOLOLOL I was getting excited thinking we were going to get a peek at your new house! It must be close if you're able to put plants in there and not worry about them being in the way of the workmen. Great video as always!

Make sure you dump the sweet potato buckets because they will grow all the way to the bottom. I did tubs this year and i had lots on the bottom.

If I built a house I’d love to have a green house built on to house instead of a garage. Have garage detached. But I’d like it with a walk out basement.
    Great video.

Love the look of your new house! I grew sweet potatoes in the tub this year..they had a lot on the vines. Be sure to dig deep in those tubs, mine went down!

I moved my lime trees in the garage too. I got glass garage doors to help the growing process of garden plants. I’m so excited. After several attempts to get and build a small greenhouse last spring, l finally have the builders here. The concrete truck broke down, yep! So hopefully Monday it will be poured. I’m making sure it’s anchored in concrete. We have had tornadoes here in the past so l don’t want to lose it to high winds.🙏 My loquat didn’t make it in the mail. The leaves looked bad and it was my most expensive tree. It didn’t get mailed right away or got lost, not sure but it apparently froze. I will not make the mistake of not protecting them for mailing again. My sweet potatoes were about the same size. I had one pot. Hopefully this spring l will have more success getting a garden in. My chickens give me 6-10 eggs daily so far. The winds last week have me re-doing their tarp. I had so many plans that couldn’t be done, waiting for fencing, waiting for shed, waiting for greenhouse. Waiting for hydrant. It’s always an adventure here.
For being a new widow, my garden and chickens and pets are helping me get up and get going. Thank you for your videos. You both look so healthy! I watched an old video and you both look younger! Healthy living! I need those greenhouse tips 👍

Dampen your sweet potato, wrap in foil and bake. Because of the dampness, the peal slides right off the potato. You make me want to try a greenhouse. Cannot gail den like I used to but growing in a greenhouse seems like something I could do. Love watching you.
