New to the channel. Very impressed with the simple and clear instructions. I have downloaded the PDF file and have been preparing my greenhouse for next year (2025). I started growing my plants in my garage and now I feel like having a unique spot for just growing my tomatoes and peppers. I will follow along! Thank you!

Thank you so much for all of the great information on seed starting, planting, trellising, pruning, and harvesting tomatoes. Even though I have had gardens for many years, I really struggle here in the deep South in Georgia, where even in Spring the temperatures can soar over 90 degrees and we have extremely high humidity which means we are always dealing with fungus, pests, and disease issues when it comes to growing tomatoes. I think a few of your tips will really help me be more successful in avoiding some of the pest and disease issues I have had with tomatoes. I really appreciate the free guide also, thank you.

Last year, I did a side by side test with 4 Early Girl plants grown with double stems and 4 with single stems. My results were non-conclusive. Slightly more weight on the doubles maybe, but more small tomatoes at the two tops. I'm going to try another trial next year, doing the same thing with some MoneyMaker plants which are doing super well so far this year.

So impressed. by the work that goes into this. 10k lbs sounds like a huge number when you read the video titla but when you consider that they are attempting to market there production it amazes me how tight their margins would be. Farming as a business has to be a strong passion to get through all the peaks and valleys of just one season. We should remind ourselves of all this when we go to the farm market and look at the price of organic heirloom tomatoes. Hearing people complain about $3.99 lb prices at the stand makes me wonder if people understand what goes into making those fresh organic vegetables available.

I live in Louisiana. NO problem with Humidity!!!!. I'm not seeing anything about fertilization? What you use, how much, how often? Do you fertilize in the drip? What is your regiment on preventing blossom end rot?

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  2 роки тому

Hi Wayne! Thanks for the great question. Here is a response from Sara Bakker:
"I don’t usually fertilize during the growing season unless I notice a drop in yield or an obvious sign of malnutrition in the plants. The fertilization happens prior to transplanting when we prep the beds for the tomato tunnel, and we use feathermeal primarily. I use about 1 5-gallon bucket of feathermeal per 90ft bed mixed in and watered well prior to transplant.
I have not had any issues with blossom end rot in my time at the ranch, which is usually either a sign of calcium deficiency or inconsistent watering. I check calcium levels in the soil prior to the planting season which allows me to make adjustments before the plants are in (some type of a lime treatment). Using a timer for your drip irrigation is the best way to ensure that your plants are getting water consistently and a good first step to dealing with blossom end rot if you are having that issue".

Super video on tomatos. Quick question...when my plants get to about 6 feet high the grow 4 feet wide and I cant get between the rows. Do you cut the branches as they grow? It get the the point i have tunnels i go through to pick tomatos. All your plants look. really thin.

Great info. I'll never be a market grower, but I have a large family. Growing and preserving is normal for us. I learned a few things, I'll try next year. Thank you for sharing. 😁👍

Great video - thanks. Question from a short farmer: how do you prune and pick when the tomato plants are over 6' tall? (We were sad when you closed the Rutland farm.)

A step ladder is the best solution we’ve found!

Noticed your comment about being vertically challenged. I learned a little bit differently about growing in a high tunnel. You will need to adapt your high tunnel for your height. I have a few videos from this season 2023 where we adapted a less than perfect tunnel for tomatoes. This system here will eventually terminate the plants before they are done producing. We like to lower the plants and cover the bare stems with soil/compost to allow them to keep growing. Lastly, if you're young and fit, go ahead and use a ladder but I find it slows management down tremendously, let alone the fall factor. Keep learning and adapting info to develop your own style. Cheers!

Just trying to follow. So, you are pruning determinate greenhouse tomatoes? Or both determinates and indeterminates?

How do your tomato flowers get pollinated inside the tunnel? Do you do anything special? Thanks for the very informative video.

I am about to plant a big tunnel like yours. You are the only grower in You Tube that’s lays the drip tape on top of the landscape fabric vs under it. Why on top? Very informative video

Thanks for watching. We did it on top that year mostly to be able to quickly identify and repair any leaks in the drip tape.

Hi Lulu! glad you liked the video. Sometimes we use a liquid fertilizer (though not always) that is sourced from Nitron Industries in fayetteville, arkansas called tomato booster.

You need a sucker trimmer that works for cuttings. Let’s say I take 50 suckers. Skipping the seeding and germination are worth lots to people like me. I’d take all your suckers for free and your work is done. Transportation is the main cost generating action for the person taking cuttings.

Does the shade cloth keep out pollinators? Is that desirable since tomatoes are self pollinating?

We receive feeder pigs at 2 months of age. They live in the receiving barn for 1 or 2 weeks before moving out to to pasture. During those first couple weeks, we train our piglets to respect the boundaries of their enclosure. Once they consistently avoid the electric wire, they're ready to move to pasture!

I would ready like to see a comparison of two rows 12 inches apart versus single row with double stems same spacing ? And how zone and humidity could gradually affect planting density and fruit size ?

I've tried this in my greed to maximize the real estate with mixed results. We are planting single rows on 24", lowering the strings from above and laying the bare stems to allow for further growth. The plants do slow down a bit from mid July to August but pick up like gangbusters in September when most local producers have stopped. The premium we get from restaurants for "off season" more than makes up for slightly less during peak season. We continue harvesting until frost. Location near Savannah GA. Cheers
