  • But why do you, or that friend, want a GFC? Why does one beat a ground tent? Let’s ask Patrick Hanley, a 28-year old mapmaker who lives in Vancouver, Washington.
“Back in August, I decided to take a roadtrip down to the Ochoco National Forest, hoping to get some sun and water time,” he tells us. “As I made my trek over the mountain from Portland, it got grayer and grayer. I drove all over hells half acre trying to find a decent spot. As we're getting set up, it starts to rain. No problem, I can deal with that. This was different.”
“We were underneath one of the heaviest thunderstorms I have ever experienced,” Patrick continues. “We saw multiple lightning strikes, one close enough that we then saw the fire crew race by about 20 minutes later. Rain was bouncing off of the ground, dog was shaking. Luckily, we had the GFC, so we set up our camp chairs inside. I cooked dinner on the long panel upstairs, then we just listened to the rain and thunder. Traditionally, it wasn't the best night camping, but it was fun and it hit me that I'd rather be outside experiencing that then sitting in my house or a bar or something back home.”
Patrick’s fairly new to camping, but his GFC has really helped him spend more time outdoors.
“Up until September of 2022, I had never camped solo and had only camped perhaps a dozen times,” he says. “After buying my GFC in March of 2023, I camped 31 nights with about two-thirds of those just me and my dog.”
He was inspired by his father, who built traveled the country in his Honda Element after retiring a decade ago.
“After his passing, I had this urge to start exploring more, as he had done,” Patrick explains. “I had seen GFCs floating around the internet and loved the idea, an all-in-one package that preserves the functionality of your truck while giving you a comfortable and quick camping platform. I had bought my Grandpa’s Toyota Tundra from him a few years prior and knew I had a platform that I never intended to sell, and was dead reliable. I picked up the GFC on St. Patrick’s day, so I could visit Butte, Montana-my dad’s hometown.”
“Most of my road trips have been 10 days or so, and about 3,000 miles give or take,” Patrick describes. “I mostly stick to dispersed camping in National Forests, since I have a curious little cattle dog who loves to explore off-leash. The GFC gives me a sense of security while alone in the woods, a secure basecamp where we can retreat to and hang out at night when I get the spooks in the woods. Being able to pull all the panels and have a portion to stand up in, or set up a camp chair and hang out in while the weather is inclement is huge for me.”
Drive fast, stay dry, camp well,
    Team GFC

This is my fav video I’ve seen about a GFC, feels truly lived in and great. I always want to hear and see how it is for someone to just hang around in it. Well done 🔥

Love these videos. Lots of good ideas that I can add to my GFC setup. My Gladiator also has a 40 gallon fuel tank in the bed.

It was great to see a long format review. Love the building out statement whiling adding value compared to the Volvo. We, too, like our bungee cords. One year later, with every season, every camping trip, each adventure, each day, each week, we learn what works best for us! While creating memories and making new friends along the way.

I had my GFC installed in late July 2023. I have an 04 Extended cab Tundra, mostly stock until lately. Purchased brand new back in March 2004. Since the install, just short of 30 days this fall, camping and surfing with it. Mostly down in Big Sur, CA. Also a set of new custom front/rear bumpers and a 10K lb winch curtesy of Stellar Built in Sacto in mid Oct. Stellar Built is the GFC NorCal installer/rep.
They specialize in building custom Toyotas.
Spending a couple of hours waiting for the install there was like being a kid in a candy store. Next project is suspension. All the parts are ordered, just waiting for delivery. A 3" lift. Hopefully will be able to run 33's. It's an old truck. But it's been paid for for in full for over a decade and has been well taken care of. Time to give it some love back.

I’m with you on the real stove! Being able to cook 2 things at a time in real pans is way better than the little backpacking stoves. And now that I have the Turbo Cubby, doesn’t eat up space in the truck bed
