The utterly bonkers Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato Turbo (with engine swap)
Вставка

- Here's a tiny Daihatsu kei-car with an engine upgrade. It has gone from a three-cylinder 659cc turbo producing 63bhp to a four-cylinder 659cc turbo producing just over 70bhp (probably). It revs to an INSANE degree, and I absolutely loved it. Truly, the Mira is Mighty.
Tested in Tasmania, February 2020 before lockdown requirements became a thing. Life seemed so simple back then...

Fun fact. In Malaysia, people that uses the Perodua Kancil/Nippa didn't just swap to 660cc turbo 3 or 4 cylinder engines. They also ridiculously fitted a 4 cylinder 1.3 liter K3 engines either NA or Turbo versions. Some also converted to 4WD/AWD system like Marty's little Daihatsu Mira from Mighty Car Mods.
If I'm not mistaken...somebody managed to fit a 1.5L from a Terios into a Kancil/Nippa/Mira...
@@sequentialtt0415 Yes mate. That's true.
Yeahhh..its true..malaysia boleh maa..
@@ejam865 anything is possible.
Sometimes I'd like a Suzuki Wagon-R with a turbo. Obviously I can't telly my friends this, which is why I'm writing it here.
🤣🤣😏 You can put a washing machine in there standin without a problem. If you put a 1300 GTI motor in from a Suzuki swift you can have all your friends cry .
I can sell you a WagonR camper. Really.
@nh73 The 1st generation had those shopping basket fronseats/ Later versions didn't have them.In the Netherlands these cars are called jokingly popemobile or cellphone booth
I've got a Mk2 Wagon R in the family fleet, got it for my daughter but I love it. Superb little car!
As someone who's owned one, absolutely 100% buy one they are incredibly fun and reliable. Your friends will make fun until you let them drive it, then they will understand why you've got it lol
Pretty disappointed MCM couldn't squeeze you in. I sincerely hope they're here in spirit.
They're busy guys, and a vast amount larger than I am. I have no quibbles.
We had a three-door Mira with no rear seat back in the 90s. Featured an 847cc three-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed gearbox. Before us, it had served as a pizza delivery van and then a florist’s delivery van, Had 65,00km on it when we bought it, and 160,000km when we sold it to an elderly former mechanic who drove it around Australia. Had 390,000km on its original engine the last time I saw it about 10 years ago.
No rear seats and a spacious load area. So technically it’s a van. I approve.
These are fun cars! I was 51 yesterday and I'm imagining this car with a roll cage and Battle of the Planets graphics 😁
I don't think so - vans don't have side windows.
Fortunately for me, when the police stopped me in my 'van' for speeding, the cop noticed it had an extra side window and he said - "so it's not a van" - and therefore I wasn't speeding !
@@millomweb Heaps of vans in New Zealand have side windows. Mostly Japanese
@@craigk1328 Yes, same here in Blighty mate.
@@craigk1328 Vans in uk don't have side windows.
My first car was classed as a minibus ! 13 seats - not often I had them all in.
I love small cars that punch above their weight!
Once more, driving a slow car fast is way more fun than driving a fast car slow.
I love these runts.
As a RHD Kei Copen owner (in LHD Austria that is) all the wicked sounds are immediately familiar. And the laugh is still there everytime I get in that little crazy Daihatsu. And yes, that all while barely keeping u with traffic. Brilliant
One of my favourite reviews , what a fun car! Sounds like you’re doing 120mph at 60
I would quite like to thrash a little Kei car around the local back roads here in Scotland. The MCM guys would approve.
Canny do it
Where abouts in Scotland?
In the UK it was called the Daihatsu Cuore (not Mira) Avanzato TR-XX R4. The UK ones had un-restricted engines.
Think how much fun you’d have with that on the Welsh country roads
Exactly this sprang into my mind!
Amazing mini road racer
The "performance radiator cap" added at least 5 bhp
So sad Daihatsu withdrew from the UK market.....they make cracking cars!
Withdrew from Australia too. My mum's last car before she moved back to the UK was a 3-door charade 1.3. Easy to boost the power on, though not as durable in the long term as the 1.0 3-cyl. Got 94kw at the wheels from my mum's, up from the usual 63 at the flywheel. Went like the clappers, though the torque steer was nasty and the standard brakes were drums all around, total rubbish. Daihatsu left Australia around 15 years ago, so very few of their cars are left.
@@shebbs1 Mate, that sounds like fun. 30 years ago I worked on a farm and we had a Daihatsu 4x4 pick-up that the owner had imported from Africa...no refinement, you had to get out and lock the diffs by a big nut on each hub, once pulled a Massey Ferguson out of mud with one. Happy days !
Bought my daughter a '99 charade, 5 speed 1600cc 250k on the clock, great fun to drive and has been utterly reliable.
It's getting tired and needs some dollars spent on it, which probably won't happen, parts are harder to get and there is no market value for the car.
If they still came to Oz I'd get another, lovely little cars and they could teach pretty much any other brand about build quality.
Marty loves this..
So does Rake
Nearly spat my cuppa out when you said ‘ reckon we can av him’! Quality. 😂😂😂👍🤜
Everyone who drives those things has the same delighted / maniacal cackle when they hit the gas.
It’s no wonder you were exhausted the reviews must have come thick and fast plus all the editing. Thank you Ian absolutely loved the diversity of the vehicles you’ve served up.
Love the rims! Not something I usually say but those look amazing.
5:46 That's shirt material there, Ian.
Loving the little car, not sure if I'd like it more or less with a 3 cylinder, I probably wouldn't care for the difference, but the white/red colour scheme is epic.
Always loved these - remember seeing one at the UK motor show when they were new. (I think they did a limited run turbo 1 litre 4 wheel drive version for the UK...) Much more fun to have a car that you can thrash without breaking the speed limits - most modern cars are just too fast to enjoy their ability legally. A bit like a Mini Copper that you can actually fit in........ I ran a Cappuccino as my everyday car for a few years - swapped to it from a Jaguar XJ! :-)
We had a Cappo as a second car for 5 years until a change of job meant my wife needed a slightly more sensible car for commuting. Bog standard except for a Larini exhaust, it was an absolute scream (literally). That was 15 years ago and it's still the only car I have ever regretted selling.
@@markguppy2715 yep me too
You are such a great bloke HubNut and I could listen to you forever reviewing cars. Thank you. Pete. UK
What a treat to see you driving in my home town! I drive these roads everyday.
I've got a 1993 Daihatsu Mira TR XX Avanzato and love it‼️🇺🇲
Still only starting off my channel. But hubnut is my motivation. Ian and his channel are first class 👍
It has the same gearbox whine as the old A-Series Austin Metros....a sound I enjoy
I "owned" and tuned one of these little beauties when I was a kid playing Gran Turismo ❤️
Brilliant. Spider in the intro!
You can't avoid that here in summer :/
Love the hilarity - reminds me of fun times in the Honda Beat, which has a very different (yet still amusing) soundtrack & not what you'd call a wealth of torque, especially with less than a squillion revs on the clock.
I always liked these especially when top gear of yesteryear reviewed one..
It I prefer the 3 pot warble and the monster stereo as original (and awd if I recall)
Most kei cars were bonkers and all the better for that... We need more!
Jezza drove one In a supermarket early 90s I remember watching it as a kid and being amazed. It's on UA-cam 😊
wow you really went to aus/nz at the right time......and came back just in time! Every other youtuber/'s (some million plus subs) are a bit dry on content at the moment (through no fault of their own), keep em coming seabrook!! (nice crisps btw)!
"Reckon we could 'ave 'im"
Not with those knees, mate.
The Mighty Car Mods and HubNut meet up needs to happen, make is so! :)
Sadly we're now about 11,000 miles apart...
Lovely reflection, or was it the animal itself that passed by and came to say hallo at 3:49. Funny car! Great sound! The “Run JDM” sticker is very funny! I also prefer a three cylinder over a four cylinder. Especially for the sound alone.
Oh wow this makes me want to turbo a perodua
do it!!!
@@Luckyjo21 ha im 17 with no mechanical experience
@@georgebamber6871 Well still good first car anyway
I almost got a kelisa for my first car but missed out I was a bit worried about parts are they are kind of rare I got an old Peugeot instead, want to get a nippa for my second car now.
Watching you enjoy yourself is a tonic to today. Go Hubnut the mad bus-man
"Oh yeah, that's some nice action, baby' on the rear wiper. I was still reeling from the GSA spedometer Blue Movie soundtrack...
Best intro ever. Gran Turismo rally stage replay scene. Sounds lovely too.
Love love love this lil runner.
It's like driving a Jack Russel.
I've travelled hundreds of miles in a Kei car, and they're genuinely fun to be in. And I'm not a petrol head. Thanks Ian.
A hub nut special from Japan must on the cards
You obviously found that hilarious in more ways than one. What a fun car to drive, no wonder you wanted to keep it.
Demented bee and a copen that looks like a shoe! Brilliant! Looks like you had a riot!! I'd love a go in one of those, it looks alot of fun
"Ooo I reckon we could have him" 🤣🤣
I had the UK market Daihatsu Cuore, basically the same thing but mine was the 3 pot, 850 cc version. Always loved the look of the TR-xx Avangarto version.
Being a youth at the time, minr featured cone filter and 5" bore exhaust...so much noise and yet so much fun at 100mph 🤣
What a smashing video Mr Seabrook, you really put across your excitement. We forget how much fun low powered small cars are. The fact you can drive at 100% whilst fighting understeer but sticking to speed limits and not really get in trouble. Stay safe fella
Fabulous - made my day. The smaller the car, often the greater the fun! Thanks Ian.
Like always, nice and informative video. It remembers me my grandfather’s Daihatsu Cuore (in the Netherlands) 18years ago, when I first had my driver license. Keep going 👍🏻💪🏻
A winning combination. All of the rorty at under forty, what's not to like?
Top work mr hubnut!
Absolutely loved this video! I don't think you could've described the sound better than a 'demented bee', what a great car...
Very surprising choice. Thank you Ian
Looks great fun Ian great review
Reminds me of my Cinquecento Sporting I sold last year. Such fun. I miss Beppo.
The Daihatsu Copen roadster with that same 659 turbo engine was sold in the UK and Europe between 2003 and 2007. So there's still opportunity to buy one 2nd hand for the thrill of the Kei car ride. I have a 2009 1300 Copen which I'm desperately waiting to be able take out for jaunts into the Welsh hills in.
That looks fun, feisty engine in a little car, I approve :D
What an amazing little Kei Car! Lots of giggling going on there and understandably why! I’d be the same - such character and endless fun! Do miss the 3 cylinder thrum. Absolutely love it. Love the wheels!
"...better check the rear...oh yeah...that's some nice action, baby..." :D :D
We need cars and car regs like this in the UK
So good to hear you giggling like that! Brilliant! I totally agree about 3 cylinders!
The noble art of gear-skipping :-)!
Yes, small cars are fun, I've had quite a few in my car life. FIAT Panda, Uno, 126, 127, 600 and now a FORD Fiesta MK2. Great the MCM Mira build.
Omg every journey would be riotous fun in that car, never get bored of the sound. I do like cars that you can still thrash and not get little black marks on your licence from doing so.
What a beautiful little car. Makes all the right noise too.
Absolutely love it ! This was one of my favourite cars on GT3 the PS2 game ! At the time I also happened to own a JDM Charade CS ,which I used to call "The buzz box" ! I really like Daihatsu vehicles 👍
K car bring back alot memories. Good video.
A fun little car that is.
Brings the kid out of you.
Great video! Just wish I'd kept my 4WD Mira classic turbo I bought new in 1997 (one of only 50 imported to the UK). Truly bonkers cars!!
I think Kei cars are fabulous! Especially the sporty buzzy ones like this; you don’t need anything more!
I've never seen you giggle so much, what a fantastic little car
oh god yaris hilton. That didn't end well. Their VW moonbuggy was good.
The official car of mightycarmods
I love how you say it should even be a cure for depression lmao... it does seem like a very joyful little car. :)
In Malaysian they all swaping they own Kancil engine with this model because it's the same platform with Perodua Nippa/ Kancil because Perodua Kancil in Malaysian only using carb engine not injection like in the UK and other country. I'm also planning the same way to swaping my engine with l600 Mira 😊
Takes me right back to the Charade gtti. Bonkers little motors.
1300 engine was fitted to the MK2 Sirion, around 60mph in second gear.
Great little car would buy one for myself 👍
I can attest to the fun of a keicar. Suzuki Whizzkid owner; which means a keicar that got a bigger engine from Suzuki for export. Rear engine also. Really fun car at low speeds already.
There is one for sale in the UK on Autotrader! Every time watch one of these videos, I end up looking through the small ad's
Just about any kei car with added turbo is huge fun. More often that not it's nothing, then nothing again, still nothing, then EVRYTHING!!!! Brilliant.
I actually built this car mate, you didn't spend time with me 😂
I am the one who figured out all the Daihatsu Lego to make the conversion work.
What lcas, hubs and cvs did you use?
Looks fun! Love Kei cars!
I think it safe to say you liked that one :)
Your so right, cars should be fun.
"Hilariously frenetic" makes for a fun car and a valid license at the same time!
I remember a Mini I had as a kid...big cam, fancy carbs, and 4100 rpm at 60 mph in top gear. Not a relaxing thing to drive, but a huge giggle to play with. :-)
I just adore this little buggers, they many small etc...but what a fun to drive them. Pitty they don't get imported in Europ anymore. " Drove a Suzuki Alto Works, in my second home country. Nippy little thing and way more fun than my Harrier.
Very cool. The unmodified versions were sold for a brief time in the UK alongside the 850cc Cuore iirc in the late 1990s.
Introducing the HubGiggle....
What a neat little car. Loved this video.
Marty is doing the Yaris because it rhymes with Paris Hilton and they like her movies. Your car is XX. Paris adds the third X.
looks very much like a Fiat Cinquecento on the outside
Possibly a bit at the front? It's japanese so it'll be copied off something European, that's for sure 😂
@@neilwalsh4058 nah this was before the fiat
@@georgebamber6871 I think this is based on the 1990-1995 model of the Daihatsu, as we call it here, Cuore. Same era.
Yea I think if anything fiat was copying the kei cars of the era when designing the cinquecento looking at the Suzuki alto and daihatsu mira/cuore
@@georgebamber6871 Fiat started making tiny cars in 1957 with the 500, followed by the 126, then the Cinquecento. Possibly Japan got the whole idea of kei cars from Turin?
Cool 90' door opening and ET shaped seats 😍 think I'd laugh too if I had a noisy car like that 😂
Another fine graduate of Robert Dunn's School of Maniacal Giggling.
Superb. You and the car.
On streets under 80kl/h speed limit you can travel in any lane, over 80, you travel on the left, and can undertake someone travelling below the speed limit.
Hooning in Hobart... Yes! Will we see mods to Myrtle? Hmmm...
I once test drove one way back was bonkers. I did own for 12 years a 1999 Daihatsu Charade 1.3 GTI. Which was great had a Ram Air Filter and Eco Tek valve fitted along with de cat custom exhaust with 5 inch tail pipe
It's like a little sneeze! 💜
K car always been fun to drive around especially the one with turbo charger.
Dropped everything, had to see this. (Sorry Twin-Cam 924 video).
Enjoyed that, happy motoring 😊
This was very amusing! Really good, you need to do more K cars.
These Mira had an even crazier version, called the TR-XX 4WS, it has the mechanical four wheel steer system from third gen Prelude licensed by Honda.
Wow.
