From 2004: Gloria Vanderbilt's many loves

  • Gloria Vanderbilt's tales of sex and romance can be a little shocking. As the heiress, artist, fashion designer and author told correspondent Erin Moriarty in this interview originally broadcast on "Sunday Morning" November 7, 2004, Vanderbilt gained a share of the family fortune as a child, but she lost what she really wanted: a relationship with her mother. It started her, she said, on a life-long search for love.

When I first heard Gloria's statement about always being in love, it sounded silly at first; but actually it sounds like a really solid philosophy for life and happiness. She was, and is, a remarkable lady.

When you lose a child you never get over it, NEVER. I know from experience. From a suicide, that happens in front of you, the pain must be so acute, so sharp, I can’t even imagine. Hope they are reunited now along with his father and her mother, and all those she lost and loved. Rest In Peace dear Gloria.

my grandma said that losing a child must be the WORST thing in life.BUT my mother indirectly killed her son.My brother was a drug-addict -my mother gave us a HORRIBLE life-my father had no idea and no interest in how to be a father. My brother at 38 went to live with my mom-after 5 years sober, had a good job but relapsed and lost it. My mother would buy him drugs-gave him the money, payed for any food he wanted-cigarrets (cleaned his mess when the cleaning lady did not show up)and payed for prostitues because"he is so alone".I´m sure he hit her,I know he threatened to jump out the window if she wouldn´t give him money. In the end he was found on the street-had flown from the window of his drug dealer´s apartment...my horrible mother (because the police in my country is dangerous) did not want to investigate what had happened.I hope she suffer the 6 months she lived after that,as much as she made me suffer all my life.

So hard to believe she was 80 in this interview! She looks so much younger; she could pass for being in her 40s or 50s. GV appears to be very in touch with her inner self. I remember the jeans with the swan logo back in the day. I had a pair of black velvet GVs that I paid a $40 for in 1979 at a high-end department store. I felt like a million bucks in those!

Thirty years ago Ms. Vanderbilt was making an appearance in the department store where I was working to promote her new perfume. We were warned not to approach her or speak to her as she was there for the customers to meet after purchasing her fragrance. To my surprise they roped off a small area for her to sit and greet everyone only feet from where I was working. After the two hour session had ended and the crowd had dispersed I looked over to where she was seated. Although she was one of the worlds most famous, beautiful and wealthiest women, she was now alone looking almost like a child who was lost or waiting for someone to rescue them. She saw me and smiled and I approached her, still behind the ropes they had her seated inside. I said “hello Ms. Vanderbilt” and she asked my name and extended her hand. I said I had not purchased any perfume but would she be kind enough to sign a photo for me? She said “absolutely” and smiled as though it were Christmas morning. I will never forget what she said next. “I’m going to sign this For Ben instead of To Ben because it’s so much more personal, rather like a friend because you took the time to speak to me. And if you keep this I hope that’s how you will remember me.” I was only in my twenties then and I’m happy to say I still have the picture she gave me, now in a frame. Upon hearing of her death yesterday I immediately thought of her smile and her kind words so long ago, and how lucky her son Anderson is to have shared a life with such an incredible woman, a beautiful mother and a cherished friend.
