Truman Capote's Swans | The Most Glamorous Socialites Of The 20th Century
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лют 2024
- The Swans were the stylish and glamourous women Truman Capote befriended, and sometimes betrayed. In part two of my series on the Swans we'll explore the lives of Marella Agnelli, an Italian Princess who married the richest man in Italy, Gloria Guinness, who may have been a spy for the Germans during WW2, Pamela Harriman, who is often called the greatest courtesan of the 20th century, Gloria Vanderbilt, poor little rich girl turned fashion icon, and Jacqueline de Ribes, who has been called the last queen of Paris.

I want to thank everyone for the support shown on my last video! It has been so lovely reading all your comments. I would love to know if anyone would be interested in a deep dive on the Swans homes? Also, if you would like me to do a video on the greatest parties of the 20th century, including Truman's Black and White Ball and the Beistegui Ball, please comment below!
For some time I have been researching the many models, artists, designers etc, who were very popular in the mid 20th century and had aristocratic origins, would anyone be interested in that? Thank you once again for all the support! Please suggest any subjects you have in mind for future videos!
Can you do an essay on Mitford descendant Stella Tennant?
I thoroughly enjoyed this! Did you know that Gloria Vanderbilt’s fashion logo was a swan? 🦢 now I know why!
Designers & models (aristo) of 1950s - absolutely! Black & white Ball - yes -- Thank you for all your excellent work and a good voice delivery.
Yes to all 3❣️
@@suebrown7358Wow! I’d forgotten about that! Thanks for sharing.

love the detail of Marella taking such pleasure in her garden in the darkness
I felt that part in my bones! It made her so real to me.
A certain issue of "Women's Wear Daily" in the mid-1970s ran a survey that asked the international jet set cognoscenti what they valued most, and Marella replied, "Serenity."
Interesting as can be! Would love more on the homes. Thanks for your videos!
I would LOVE to see videos about the Swans homes, but also about their jewelry collections, especially Babes.
I do that too!!! Especially in the winter.
I wish Gloria Guinness had been featured in Feud. She's my absolute favourite - a woman with her own mythology and style.
Maybe they thought the wwii German spy or prostitution business would distract from the core plot. She was fascinating.
I agree she's among the most fascinating and storied of the flock. The difficulty of making her complex social evolution knowable to an unfamiliar audience in a screenplay probably dissuaded Ryan Murphy from including her. Babe Paley is the center and emotional anchor of "Feud..." and a fascinating secondary character can fracture a good storyline.
🎉🎉 Gloria is my fave too! Followed closely by Pam & Slim, cause they moved with such cunning, strategic moves 🙌
Yes I would love to see videos about the homes of these women. Especially Morella. Her gardens sound amazing.
Donna Marella Agnelli was truly a lady. She was a very hands on Nonna to get Elkann grandchildren
There is an HBO doc on Gianni. Shows the homes.
MArella, Marella Agnelli
Wow!!! You took an over exposed topic and gave a whole new informative story. New facts, obviously well researched. And delivery is pleasant to listen to.
Thank you! It took so much research but I loved it!
Beautifully done
🎉❤Scholarly, witty, cogent and well reasoned account of The Swans. I loved the well mannered, respectful tone of this documentary due to ZERO negative gossip I always disliked Pamela Harriman for her ruthless Golddigger Husband Stealing Ruthless Social Climbing BUT highly revered the grand dames Jacqueline de Rhibbes and Gloria Vanderbilt. I was a little girl when Capote published In Cold Blood. As a child I read A Christmas Memory and Breakfast at Tiffany's when it was first published. Truman Capote was vicious, treacherous, brilliant, doomed and tragic. His mother, Lilly Mae was a working class small town Alabama beauty who felt trapped and stifled in dull as dishwater southern country bumpkin burg. It was Capotes mother who was the real Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's. In the book and film she was called Lula Mae. In her real life Truman called her Lilly Mae. Capote was savagely damaged by his disturbed alcoholic social climbing hard as stone mother. Truman really HATED women socialites and THAT motivation was why he wrote La Cote Basque, his Hit Job against The Swans. Truman Capotes mother was a Failed Socialites who was harshly rejected by Manhattan High Society and drank herself to death until she committed suicide. Truman Capote both Loved and Hated his mother. He both Loved and Hated the Swans. Self destructive full of shame and self loathing Truman Capote destroyed his career and ruined his life by publishing La Cote Basque. Manhattan socialites and The Swans closed ranks and Capote was blacklisted in Manhattan society. He latched onto lovely gracious compassionate Joanna Carson. She was a PhD graduate of UCLA and was a Nutrition Scientist and quite artistic. She tried to save Truman Capote but he was SO bitchy and publicly malicious towards her tremendous kjndness. Capote died in her home and she was his oNLY friend, having completely burned his bridges all over the world. Capote was a truly brilliant raconteur, writer but threw his life into the gutter
As a child I greatly preferred Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal. Capote has always fascinated me but he squandered his talent and like his thwarted doomed mother became a vicious Mean Drunk and Rx pill addict. Technically Capote died from physical disease but his alcoholism and drug addiction was in fact Slow Suicide
Thank you for a fascinating account of a bygone era. Gloria Guinness and Jacqueline de Rhibbes were truly women of great intellect just as GloriaVanderbilt. Many of the Swans were just vapid socialite fashionable clothes horses who did nothing humanitarian with their vast wealth and power😮
Ugh… if you want to write an article write an article, not an article as a comment. You basically re-hashed information contained in this article and other popular articles on Capote.
@@liasisboa She’s doing no harm.
@@liasisboa I enjoyed her text very much. Speak only for yourself.
@@c.c.6930I didn't!
Lamentablemente, Capote era un gran escritor pero no era Proust.
Morella's husband looked pissed off in her wedding picture! His arms are crossed and that expression!!😢
He was none to happy but she was pregnant & from a good family so…..
These are sad lives wrapped in glamor 😢
Best summary yet!
Thank you for this very informative video, and for delving into the life of Jacqueline de Ribes, who is sometimes overlooked in my opinion. I remember her clothing designs from the 1980's to mid-90's, and she truly was one of my most favourite designers for women. Please don't hesitate to make more of these videos, your style is as impeccable as the women you are researching.
More more more please👏👏thank you I love these stories.
YES indeed....
yes to the aristocratic models of the 60s: Marisa Berenson, Penelope Tree, Edie Sedgwick come to mind.
Great Idea 👍
Marisa & Berry Berenson’s grand mum was Elsa Schiaparelli ⭐️
Edie was truly pathetic, from her beginning to her end. Never meant to reach old age, never aspiring to anything, may as well have been a piece of dust to begin with.
India Scarlett, you are far-and-away the best commentator on Truman. You stick to the facts, unlike others who traffic in vapid psycho-babble and breathless magazine fare. Your research distinguishes you.
Thank you so much!
@@indiascarlett You're welcome. It's a pleasure to subscribe. 💞
This is wonderful! I enjoyed part 2 very much. I fully support you're doing more deep dives! I would love to see the idea you mentioned at the end. I find glimpses of that world fascinating.
Thank you again for such care in your subjects. ❤😊
Thank you!
@@indiascarlettI enjoyed your video but I would prefer you speak a little slower it would make it easier to follow the story.
Please do an in depth look at the homes of the Swans. You can make any subject fascinating. Love your style & your sublime voice. Thank you for all the work it must have taken to bring the Swans to life! ✨
Yes ! Anderson claimed his parents were happily married !!
Brilliant 💕 My favourite Swan is Gloria Vanderbilt..In the early 80s I was a student in Hunter College..I guess she lived nearby and was always so nice to us. Unlike some of the other 5th Avenue types that lived in the area. 👖
Thank You for sharing your experience.
That is really cool that you had encounters with Gloria Vanderbilt. She seemed like a real down-to-earth woman in interviews, and she was also an impressive businesswoman.
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch. I like the idea of a video on how the Swans created lovely homes.
I think it is so important to tell these fascinating women's stories, it keeps them alive, thank-you and yes, please make more videos!
I have enjoyed learning about these women. Such lives! It’s very interesting. I’d love to see more!
You really make fantastic videos. I would love a series on the dollar princesses, and the gilded age in general. Many thanks. Your work is meticulous and accurate, pleasantly narrated, told well.
Dollar princesses would be a great video! I'll add it to my list!
That’s already been done
@@shadrach6299 India would offer brilliant insight as well.

Thank you India for this follow-up video, which also provides more information on Capote. Your writing style and speaking voice are both so enjoyable. ❤
Thank you so much!
*I appreciate your understandings, time, and brilliant composition. 💗*
Thank you!
Thorough and thoughtful telling of the lives of the women who cavalierly once lunched at La Cote Basque.
I absolutely LOVED your documentary and encourage you whole heartedly to continue with The SWANNs. May I suggest a documentary on women who were the MUSEs for the great fashion designers and also artists. Just a thought. xxg Brisbane Australia
Jacqueline de Ribes! Thank you!
Excellent work. Please include Mica Ertugun. A very interesting woman.
I'm so happy you started posting again! 🤩
"She's some sort of marvelous primitive" 💀, nice video (as per usual), India! Would you consider making one about Capotes ball? Thank you!
I really enjoyed this. I just started learning everything i could about "The Swans" and Truman Capote after watching The Feud season two. This is very interesting hearing about who these woman were and how they came to be . Thank you for making this very informative documentary, I look forward to watching more in the future.
"In Cold Blood" was a true story and nonfiction. The film made of the true story focuses on the murderers. Robert Blake of the, "The Little Rascals" and the television show, "Barretta" played the main character.
Fascinating! Please continue your research into women whose lives we know so little about. Thank you!
This is the finest video on UA-cam. It’s beautifully photographed and present with grace and depth. The narrative was superb.
Thank you so much! I always try to bring my subjects to life and treat them with care!
Thank you for such an enjoyable UA-cam channel.
Thank you. I am fascinated by this story.
I just discovered you and think you are amazing !! Please do Marisa Berenson she’s fascinating. Duches of Windsor . I enjoy you so much . I can’t get enough. I have been a fan of Jacqueline De Ribes for so many years. She was unique her features amazing.
I’d be interested in seeing a doc about the children of the swans for sure
Fabulous episode! ❤
Yes, I'd love to learn more about all of the topics you mentioned. Also I've been fascinated by Marjorie Merriweather Post. After learning more about her on NPR years ago..
She’s an interesting one. Her first husband Edward Close, who she had two daughters with, is Glenn Close’s grandfather. Basically raised by him & his second wife in Greenwich
Beautiful. Love this video. Just enjoyed this and the luxury.
Lovely and informative! Thank you!
Really nice hearing of all this. I think it's much needed today. We seem to have lost the class and style of previous decades. The 50s and 60s were an amazing time for design, style and celebrity. Please , give us more.
I really enjoyed this series. Everything you do is excellent….and your voice adds to the perfection! Your videos are always with waiting for. Thank you!
Would love to hear more about Jacqueline de Ribes. Loved this episode.
Yes!! Please, do more of these amazing videos ❤❤

@indiascarlett Wow, you truly outdid the first video. I’ve already said that your narration is first rate. I have to say, your collection of illustrations is mind blowing. I really enjoyed watching this. I do love these swans more…Two fashion designers who made their own way. Somehow Gloria Vanderbilt manages to be relatable to average Americans.

Dear India, Such an avalanche of elegance! Wouldn't dare leave these "necklines" out. The counterpoint being Jessica Lange's startling performance as Tru's mother in "Fued". Lillie Mae ascribes a motive for "Answered Prayers", saying it was an answer, alright.... to "society's" true perception of her and Truman
..."Southern..odd..a little trashy.." P.S. went to my Brooke file and found a pic of her at a Valentino show ca.1982, with Andy Warhol, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Lauren Hutton. Happy Valentino Valentine ❤! 💞
Jessica is everything!!!
As a native of the real Cape Fear, N.C., I have always marvelled at Ms.Lange's performance in that horrifying thriller and how, in her own way, Leigh had an unwanted kinship with Max Cady, played by DeNiro.@@SocratesCurse
@@lewismusser7184 I lived in Wilmington NC
@@SocratesCurse You may recall that Jessica Lange starred in" Crimes of the Heart" with Sissy Spacek and Diane Keaton, which was shot in Southport,N.C., quite close to the actual Cape Fear.
@@lewismusser7184 I do remember, I’ve seen all of her movies. Frances is my favorite. Cape Fear was amazing.
Yes please cover the models u mentioned and the other people.❤
i think that shot at 9:17 was taken in italy. jackie was there without john. vanity fair did a big story about it some years ago.
Lets just get this straight. Gloria was descendant from nobles and conquistadors from Spain/Portugal. She wasnt a mutt. But she used the Mexican nationality to make herself exotic and then the Germans were not akin to that.
Thank you. 💐
I would love to hear more about the Posh Models of the early years!
Yes make all the suggested content
Loulou de la Falaise! Please!
Loulou is definitely going to be in the aristocratic models/creatives video!
Very interesting. Truman really was a snake. The more I hear, the clearer it is.
