    I'll say again: if you're going to do California water failures, Salton Sea needs to be next. Some years ago, the Army Corps of Engineers wanted to concrete out our local wash and runs into the Santa Ana River (nice bike trail along that river by the way, but it's only nice for riding at night most of the year because the day is too hot). Anyway, we had already known about the problem of the water not being able to seep into the water table so, in probably one of the few successful protests I've ever seen in my life, we forced them to leave most of it without concrete and control the flash floods in another way. They really did have to do some flood control because, just in my lifetime, the wash had gone from sometimes not even having any water in it to topping a pretty deep and wide channel. After a good rain, we used to all ride our bikes down to the wash to see how high it had gotten. One time, it was almost to the point of washing out the train tracks down there and my mom can remember a time when it washed out all the bridges except for one! I can remember a time when we went down there to look at the water was lapping at the bottom of that one bridge that had been left as it was because it hadn't washed out in the previous floods (of course they're replaced what was a beautiful old bridge with some ugly modern shit when they redid the wash). At least they put in a lovely exercise trail next to it, which I recently discovered, so I had to ride my bike down it so I could sit by the creek and get drunk: a favorite pastime of mine.

  • @pax6833
    @pax6833 2 роки тому +48

    Okay so, slightly disappointed in you guys here because there were some facts on this one you guys missed. In fact I'm a little disappointed I never send ya'll a message offering to appear as a guest on this episode because I happen to be familiar with this disaster. I'm not a geologist, but I do work with them, so I have second hand knowledge about why the dam collapsed and some of the problems leading up to its collapse.
    Firstly, big one here, none of you mentioned Mulholland never got a degree in engineering. Could've been a good laugh there. Aside from that, nobody ever consulted a geologist when this thing was built, though they were hardly the first to not do that.
    So, why did the dam collapse? Roz mentioned it briefly, an issue with the foundation. But more specifically, it had to do with the geologic makeup of the hillsides being used as the buttress for the dam. You see, there's a reason that the tombstone remained when the dam failed, because the tombstone was situated on solid bedrock. Dams need to be build on competent bedrock, close to the surface, in order to anchor the structure in place. Mulholland's mistake is that he thought the hills next to the dam were also bedrock with shallow soil surfaces. But they WEREN'T. The dam was actually built on what geologists call 'Saprolite' which is highly weathered bedrock that is in the process of becoming soil, meaning that the hillsides were basically largely dirt.
    So, when the dam was filled, the water started eroding out the base of the sides of the dam by washing away the dirt it was build on top of. And as the pressure increased from the higher water level, the erosion increased. Eventually the sides of the hill gave way in a kind of mud slide that caused the dam to snap apart.
    There was by the way a witness to the event. They didn't *see* the dam go out, but they did hear it from a few miles away on the highway.
    Anyways if you guys are gunna do more episodes on CA history or with geology, I'd be more than happy to help you out. -From a californian

If you wonder why so many people drive, you should look at how shitty our public transportation is here, particularly look at the hours it runs. You can basically get further on your bicycle on the weekend because getting anywhere on the weekend using public transportation is going to take your the entire weekend and then you can't just make a tent city because you have to wait until tomorrow to take the bus back home because that is when you will encounter the local police, often because some shithead yuppies called the cops because they saw someone poor.

    10:28 50 lakh rupees is about 66,000 USD. Also the government that's imposing the fine is the Federal government, that's of course based in New Delhi, the Delhi municipal corporation that runs the landfill is under the local Delhi govt which is entirely separate & has a different political party in power, which kinda Incentivises the fine tbh.

According to the flow chart: If the Lakers/Dodgers (or Dodgers/Lakers depending on how violent you get on Tequila) fail, you then default to the Kings and so on down the line. I'm not sure where the NFL teams fall into this, the flow chart hasn't been updated since 2009.

    The New Line is "OH GOD THERE'S COMPETITION NOW" and basically goes straight. Leading to the interesting bit where there's a stack of bridges carrying:

    Acre-feet makes perfect sense. A farmer planting a crop that needs 60 inches of rain per year can look at the average rainfall in his area and figure out his deficit. Suppose his area only gets 36 inches on average, he needs to irrigate to cover the other 24 inches, or 2 feet. Now just multiply that by how many acres he's farming and he's got his needs in acre-feet. I don't know why this is challenging for you.

    @49:30 - i'm sure someone has already covered this, but 'acre-foot' is a measure which is useful for farming. Crop water requirements over a season are expressed in how much rainfall a crop needs to thrive, which naturally works out to acre-feet when you go through "well, i've got 12 acres of crops which each require 1 inch of rainfall per week", which is one acre-foot. (or whatever, hopefully that makes sense an example)

We’re still not federally recognized either which is cool. Their is a movement but I don’t know anything about it. I still need to get registered in the tribe. Gotta have the tribe do blood quantum’s so the government can tell me how Indian I am.
    If people don’t know what that is, they should look into it. I went to a tribal building in Canada I think (I was 10) and they had preserved vials of blood or at least had replicas on the walls. Dunno if that’s a common thing or not, but it was disturbing to me how much control the government has when it comes to determining what my ethnicity is.
