    1:18:23 GOOD NEWS ALICE! I'm an American working at a vape/smoke shop. Starting out I made more money than I did as a substitute teacher. Now I manage the store and I make 11k more each year than I did as a contract STEM teacher with 5 years in the district. My employer treats me with dignity and respect and gives me PTO and sick leave. I'm also less at risk of violence. My state is run by clowns.

    Ok.. Let's do some fact-passing.
    1: Coles and Ericson (Monitor) Turrets were distinct designs (Ericson's needed to be jacked up before it'd rotate, but didn't create a break in the deck).
    2: One major factor for Captain being so unstable was that it still carried full rigging. It was also top-heavy which made it slow to right itself. But it basically got blown over until the lower deck came awash.
    3. Monitor sank in a storm, but not from lack of stability (if anything she was TOO stable). Storm damage (slamming) caused a leak where the raft deck overhung the (submerged) body of the ship proper. Monitor was weird, but she was designed for "brown water" work. Several later models made it cross the Atlantic, but they were absolutely no fun to be on while doing so.
    4. 20th century ship turrets (especially the big ones) are technically "hooded barabettes". That is they are built on a cylinder (with roller bearings) driven into the hull. Captain's turrets were on Spindles.

    • @mikehjt
      @mikehjt Рік тому +6

      HMS Monarch also carried full rigging and it was stable. It safely rode out the same gale that sank HMS Captain. The problem with Captain was that Coles insisted on a lower freeboard and then the constructors (Lairds) didn't do a good job of controlling weight so that Captain completed over weight. The low designed freeboard meant there was no margin for such error.

      @@danielled8665 Nothing to do with that, it has more to do with how obvious it is that non-US born tech workers are getting massively underpaid by US based companies. That's before we even mention how uberized the industry is for the most part, and how little anyone outside of it cares. There's a lot of reasons for it, some very obvious, the more critical ones less so, though.

Liters, to the everyman, would usually be used to measure water-based fluids. So 90 L would be about 45 soda bottles or 24 gallons. However sand, being denser than water, at a fully laden capacity would be about 144 kg or 60 soda bottles. That's a lot to have dumped on your head.

    I'd like to point out that for those of us with AFAB bodies, it's not like we have to hold the part that we piss from when we use the toilet. We just sit down. Not knowing the exact body part the piss comes out of is not that surprising. Or is this a reference to not knowing all of our organs, their functions, and how the whole system ties together? Cuz most ppl aren't going to know those details without taking an anatomy class.
    Like, WTF is the gall bladder for? IDK, but I do know that I've known way too many ppl that have had to have theirs removed in their early 20s. And apparently the spleen has something to do with our immune system? I only know that cuz I freaking googled it out of sheer curiosity.
    But yeah, the kidneys clean our blood and the waste is sent on through the system and eventually becomes urine. I knew this on some level, but I don't think I really understood it until after I ended up in a relationship with someone who has kidney disease.

    This episode's Safety Third is the reason why in my country commercial archeology excavations are handled directly by museums and thus by the state and an academic institution. If you turn the salvage and rescue excavations over to the private enterprise who's also running the construction project within a deadline, you end-up with 40+ archaeologists working without a coordinating effort or any supervision. Luckily our field is not a high risk one for work hazards, but the results you'd receive from a less than perfect coordinated and supervised excavation results almost always in a huge data loss. So (even though it is too late for me) to cut it short, any commercial archaeology operation needs some amount of academic supervision if you want to end up with more than some broken potsherds and whole lot of frustrated future archaeologists who has to read through your excavation reports.

That isn't universal, but the thing about the car mechanic trade is that if you don't like where you're at you really can take your toys and walk the fuck out and you will have a job within a day. Push comes to shove you just go into business for yourself. A good boss realizes this, and will treat employees well.
