A Japanese lady told me that she made these for her kids with little cuts of hot dog or small sausages in them, which I have since done. She also suggested another path where they would be sweet, that you can buy red-bean paste in a plastic bag... so just cut a small corner off the bag, and squeeze some out into each mold, so it's a little like a jelly doughnut! I had my own American idea of using cornbread mix (sold everywhere locally) and the hot dogs to make tiny corn dogs! I haven't tried to do this yet, but have great hopes, it really seems like it would work. Also could just use the corn meal and onions to have "hush puppies" without using a deep fryer.

I was just thinking here in the US I could buy a small box of jiffy corn muffins and put in this with a cut of hot dog it would be mini corn dog bites! Oh my!
I have an abelskiver pan(it has smaller holes) which is s Danish treat. Little soft sweet pancake bites. A small town near me has a Danish Festival every year (in Michigan) I grew up eating them.
I've thought about making takoyaki several times. I have everything but 🐙 octopus but I can get squid or 🍤 shrimp. My half Japanese brother in law told me to just pop a chunk of crab 🦀 meat in instead. But i had to buy bulldog sauce for on top-he and his mom have taught us so many fun things to make and I had the honor of teaching her to make spaghetti sauce from scratch and to can/jar it. And I passed my lasagna recipe to her. She moved to Texas and we all miss her.

@@Emeraldwitch30 I got the idea for this originally from a little cookbook from Solvang, all about Aebleskiver, and "Danish Days". Nobody here had ever heard of it! And of course it was before UA-cam. At first I felt funny about (say) cornbread and all, but here we see Japanese persons making PIZZA, so I guess all bets are off! SO, I say, forget about octopus and go for that beloved JIFFY mix! I don't think you'll regret it. Pro tip (I'm not the pro! I saw it on UA-cam) is to put the batter in a squeeze-bottle or other special dispensing gadget. If you look at the videos of Takoyaki street vendors one thing you see is that they are sloshing stuff all over the place, and I don't think you want to do that at home. Maybe this will become completely American, a little bit at a time. THEN ONE DAY you'll have a Japanese visitor, and the circle will be complete! Ah, I made some in an actual Aebleskiver pan, the balls were much bigger than Takoyaki and I thought it was easier to do. Used standard pancake mix with some sugar and seasonings like Cardamom... and put different kinds of jelly or chunks of guava paste inside. So... somehow I started in Japan, and ended up in Cuba? Or Florida, anyway. I AM WITHOUT QUESTION going to do that corndog thing, how can it not be great?

Ive been craving onion rings for weeks but most of the places near me buy those frozen ones they just deep fry. Not as good so last night I did a deep fry dinner lol. Onion rings and mushrooms and eggplants. Hubby had a few slices of turkey breast for protein.
But it sure hit the spot. But thats a lot of oil and my house smells like a dive bar lol

Why I did my homestay in Japan, we made takoyaki at the house. However, since they were not sure about how I would react to octopus we had shrimp instead.
The mother (I was shopping with her) saw friends and where chatting, and started laughing about "ebiyaki hahahaha how cute" lol
This video reminded me of that!

I need to order a takoyaki maker! I had a few other ideas : pancake mix with fresh fruit (strawberry apple blueberry) in middle, pancake mix with maple syrup mixed in, minced veggies (onion pepper green onion tomato mushroom ) in first to cook a bit then scrambled egg mixture, mashed potatoes or rice with cheese chunk in middle, rice with tuna or seafood salad in middle, cake donut batter would make donut holes perfect could even put whole nut or Nutella in middle.......OK can you tell I am hungry and totally inspired! Thank you for such a fun video! It would be interesting to see what you typically eat at home in a day, you both can obviously cook! Also how do you both stay in such good shape eating all this food?

It is fun seeing how to make a takoyaki grill multi-task. A round food I knew many years before I found takoyaki is aebleskiver. Yes, it is Scandinavian. The grill looks just like the takoyaki grill but slightly bigger cups and I had one that was round heavy cast iron. The dish is fluffy pancakes. The batter is very like Belgian pancakes. I used to get them at fairs filled with jam or cream.

There are quite a few foods traditionally cooked in something resembling a takoyaki pan. There's poffertjes, tiny bite sized Dutch pancakes with powdered sugar. There's kanom krok, a Thai sweet/savory coconut pancake often topped with green onions. You could also cook individual quail eggs, Thai style, for a snack or super cute garnish.

At around 4:00, I'm thinking it wants more batter! The batter is watery, just flour and it doesn't rise. You can see in commercial operations they just flood the whole cooker with it because it shrinks so much. Also they might put a lot of STUFF which doesn't shrink. The Aebleskiver from Denmark are like this, but made of more like pancake batter which rises,so the mold tends to fill up and it's easier to get that SPHERE. So when the pancake is completely cooked it shrinks a little and can roll around in the pan. When I'm trying to make Takoyaki I put more batter after one or two quarter-turns of the balls, and fill the mold again.

I went and priced some on Amazon, was like nah I don't need "another" questionable use(I am notorious for buying kitchen/cooking stuffs and not using them). I was then looking at recipes, came across this. NOW I am definitely getting one! Great way to portion out snacks/ meal bits/bites.

I have gotten Bokksu before. I like that you can get an individual box, you don't have to subscribe.

Hi, thanks for the video. I have other ideas to offer. I was thinking about using puff pastry + cheese and sausage/ham. Also, dough for donuts. In donuts, you can put jam, red-beens pasta or Nutella, or fruits.

Thank you! The maker was just sitting in the shelf after only about 3-4 uses. Hope you make a part 2!

You can “cook” the small pepperoni cubes in the 3 empty holes next to the gyoza wrappers. Then add the pepperoni on top of melted cheese.
