There's more white goths because there are more whites in general. Non-white goths are also discriminated against by other non-whites. They are criticized for "acting white" and are alienated in their own communities.

I get really happy when I see people of colour in the goth/alternative communities because it breaks stereotypes for both white and people of colour. I've heard some pretty awful things like "Goth is White". To me, goth/alternative is for everyone and it looks awesome no matter race, gender, etc. I can also see both sides of the argument and why people feel the way they do about this. But like you said, back in the 90s, you guys didn't really get to see each other that much, but knowing there are other people like you in the community would bring a heightened sense of comfort and community.
One of my close friends comes from Kenya and she listens to metal and appreciates goth fashion which I find really cool! She wouldn't class herself as goth or metalhead but she is darkly inclined. She's more into Otaku and anime.

I agree with you. We actually had to carve a space into some of these communities because we were always regarded as outsiders in SO many damn ways. From all sides. I think the differences in opinions on using the hashtags and terminology are probably generational. These new babybats are growing up SEEING black and other people of color alternative models and whatnot. It was nowhere near as pervasive when we were growin' up. They may find it divisive or strangely redundant without all the context. Great video! Definitely shared.

Also Marie, I just came here from your Kai video just exploring your channel and I’ve got to say you’re super cool and seem so sweet yet also very strong when presenting arguments and you just seem like a very genuine creator (which god forbid is quite rare on this platform) so thank you! When I was in school I definitely had more hispanic alternative friends than black alternative friends, but of course not as many as white alternative. If talking just goth I knew about 5 (including my sister, lol) and two people of color. But social media was just beginning in those days, nobody even knew the pound sign had a different name, so it would have been much more alienating for alternative poc because you wouldn't be able to search for someone like yourself. If a hashtag helps someone make a connection then it's alright in my book

  • @MisUnderstandingUs

I like to see people of all colors in the alternative community but when its 90% white it does get old because alot of people look the same and have the same style. And it would be the same if it was 90% black or Asian or Hispanic. The hashtags should go away if it could be a mutual melting pot but realistically that won't happen so yes we still need them in a way.

Oh lord. I was all about the vampire freaks and yahoo chat rooms-that was the ONLY way to find other brown alternative people. I was more in the punk/death metal scene -And I’m from down south. I literally have stories about shows being klan meetings. 😬 It’s still a lot of tokenism in the metal scene but better than it was in the early 00s.
I get kinda annoyed when my experiences are invalidated by younger poc goths because they didn’t live through and be in highschool during peak Manson/columbine era and don’t know how different it was being “othered”.I was that kid that used to get severely bullied, had to change schools, accused of worshiping the devil, etc-and it wasn’t until I hit about late 20s to actually meet other alternative poc in real life. My friend group was white males for the majority of my life.

LMAO you're not old, I'm old. I'm 56, no tattoos, only earlobe piercing and I'm a rock/metal kinda girl who has always been fascinated by the Goth lifestyle. I've always thought that hashtags segregate us, however you are right about it helping others find their "one of my kind". I never thought about like that but you're right. If someone is new to anything, it's nice to see someone willing to share their experience to help them out. I'm not Goth and I appreciate it 😉 I'm a little disappointed that the color of someone's skin is an issue in an alternative movement though. I honestly thought it was like you said, welcoming and inviting to anyone who was outside of the "norm" - which by the way doesn't exist. There's nothing normal about normal sometimes 😂❤️ The way you're living your life is closer to normal because you are living as who you are, you are your truth and I have mad respect for people who are brave enough to be who they are and not be concerned about others opinions. Other people's opinions are not your problem 😉❤️❤️❤️

I’ve been in the goth/alternative scene for a long time now, and despite being only 28 I have witnessed some pretty wild racism at clubs and shows and online. Some white goths and white alt people have a really bad habit of gatekeeping as if being white was the only correct way to be goth. There’s so much more to being goth than having pale skin! It’s a mindset and a lifestyle and anyone is welcome to join the community!

Goth looks good on everyone in my opinion... it's so customizable and sexy and fun.... there are no rules.... anyone with any features or skin color or hair type or whatever can rock it and they do! I was always a little weirded out growing up that there wasn't really a lot of representation in the alternative community for non-white people... and even less representation the darker people's skin became. I am always so excited to see more diversity being shown in the community! Less homogeny makes the style so much better :)

💀Hi 💀, I understand. As a black goth and a metalhead guy I never got any disapproval from anyone except for my mom, but after years of fighting with me she just gave up, and let me wear it. She said I can't wear it when I'm with her, or when I have appointments so the doctor doesn't look at me weird, but the doctor said I dress cool he even played some metal music at my dentist appointment lol 😂 I'm a black goth guy and I'm happy. I'm asexual so I'm not attracted to people, but I did once see a nice looking goth girl wearing tripp pants with the chains, and the handcuffs on the sides of the pants, and she had the black platform shoes. She was so nice to me and my mom, she worked at a Petco. I consider myself asexual, but have a small very small attraction to guys. I like to be the small goth guy and have a taller guy hitting on me lol, no but I've been hit on a lot because I have dimples, because I'm short, and because I'm goth. Mostly by white men, but more black men. But idc I'm 25 I've been goth and a metalhead since I was 14, my mom said I thought it would be a phase by now, I said nope, not a phase 😕. I get compliments on my clothes, but weird looks at the same time. It's always annoying that I'm starting to hate ppl, and compliments I do get, I don't accept them. I honestly don't care for attention I find it highly annoying.

I think a huge reason why I never followed through with becoming or identifying with goth culture was because I didn’t have that support system, especially living in the Caribbean. I had one friend who I could relate to but we when we did try to do our thing, we would get funny looks in from both strangers and family alike. We both struggled with not seeing Black people being goth and felt like we didn’t belong to to the subculture. Dreams kinda fell through. Seeing more people we could relate to now makes my younger self jump for joy, but I think that bus may have already left the terminal 😅

I was a part of my local punk scene for a couple years. Mostly looking for friends bc I’m more your classic emo, and the specific group I ended up joining was the least accepting people I’ve ever met. It took me a while to realize bc they put up a good front of “we love everyone”, “wear whatever you want”, “this is the MOST open accepting place”, etc etc. In reality if you weren’t a perfect straight, white, CIS, punk who’d been in the scene for years you were treated as lesser. They were also fine with letting a Transphobic guy be friends with them, talk shit about me, and actually steal my backpack! (I’m trans ftm). As much as I think we want these places to be open and accepting to everyone there’s always gonna be the most power in the ‘socially normal’ people’s hands. It’s no different than anywhere else, even the LGBTQ community has huge biases.

Im so sick of all this toxic gatekeeping within the goth and alternative scene. I still struggle to find and make friends in the scene :( i went to a goth night at a local club in my city (i live in NZ, not many or any goths in my city lol) was having a fun time on the dance floor swaying like a little creature of the night to Stigmata by Bauhaus. Afterwards whilst chilling outside in the smokers lounge i was getting stared at up and down and ignored any time i tried to interact.

I can not imagine the audacity of someone approaching you at a show and calling out your color, and calling it "cute???" Jesus, awful.
I always loved being in the alternative community beCAUSE it's for everybody, and color never seemed to matter. But I mean, I suppose prejudice is everywhere.
Hell, just being an actual goth/metal woman as an adult is unusual. So many women grow out of it. I'm happy to have found your channel, happy to have a new well-spoken grown up elder goth to look up to. 🖤

Just getting into your channel but I just wanted to share my love and support. I came from a small town community that was not very ethnically diverse, so I didn't have a lot of interaction with people outside my own ethnic background until I came to university. And it was through a mutual interest in alternative culture that I bonded with my first friends outside of my own ethnic background. I found that that shared interest made it much easier for us to bridge the gap and come to respect and understand each other's differing perspectives. I hope that in the future that these shared areas of interest can continue to bring people together and help people understand where each other are coming from and embrace the whole spectrum of differences out there. I don't really have a place to say much with regards to the hashtag thing, given my pasty white butt fit pretty well into the whole scene thing, but if it helps people find people they can connect with and relate to, great, imo. The beautiful thing about the alternative community is the fact that it embraces differences and encourages us to embrace who we are.

Also! To add to what you're saying, WE ARE NOT SEEN UNLESS WE DO IT OURSELVES. That's with everything. For example, black kinky/curly hair wasn't becoming normalized until we normalized it ourselves. The same thing can be applied to the hashtag. I look at other like myself for inspiration and I would not have been able to do that without the use of those hashtags. Don't get me wrong. I still enjoy seeing other goths and being inspired by them, but there's a different sense of happiness and inclusiveness of seeing other POC goths that also make me feel seen.

I am not un thw goth scene heavy but am in the punk scene. Ive had thus conversation with poc in the punk scene too and I've found its really split. As far as me, I loooove that hashtags and I love the subculture within the subculture of POC. I love the punk scene and relate a lot with my scene and I love the black community and relate with them much as well. That being said there isnt a huge overlap, at least where I live(in Denver). U have had a couple bands and make it a point that my bandmates or other poc bc I know we connect and understand each other on another level.

Finding ppl who look like you in the subculture that interests you is revolutionary. Finding the Afropunk documentary in highschool was life changing it was cool seeing all these non white kids being part of all these different subcultures looking up Black pll in different bands etc like it was nice. Representation matters its about like you said finding people who relate to you culturally as well. Being the only non white is lonely esp depending where you live. The hashtags matter. I'm dark aesthetic inclined I like seeing Black ppl in all sorts of scenes even if I'm not part of it. Its cool and the # make it easier to find ppl who look like you interested in what you like.

Even being white and pale I had goths tell me I couldint be blonde and goth or that I wasint skinny enough. Safe spaces for poc people are good! It doesint explude them from "white goth" contributors cause those hashtags are there bring people together and I think poc people have a right to bond and connect. You can use more then one hastag, pocgoth and goth. I'm thinking of making a video on goth and punk and lgbt culture as a rebellion against the white colonialist norms and bring examples of poc conunities using it to bring back the power they lack in modern society. Thank you for making this video.

I feel that it's important for young alt kids of color to feel like any alt subculture is also for them to be a part of, now that there's easier access to the different subcultures that are out there. It might seem like identity politics at first glance but it's really more like "oh you're a person of color and you're into alt music? You're not alone! come on let's get you into some cool bands!"

I’m younger, pasty white, and not completely in the goth community, but I lurk around in it occasionally. From what I’ve seen everyone is separated by more than just race, like the elitists who try to police who and what is and isn’t goth. But I feel it’s kinda... idk, petty? to complain about using the POC hashtag with goth for the reasons you outlined in this video. It’s a way for people to come together with others who share their interests and look like them. Instead of seeing it as something separating the community, we should look at it as a positive that is helping introduce more people to the subculture and focus on what’s really dividing goths.
This was long and rambling, but TLDR: in my opinion using the gothpoc hashtag or others are doing more to unite goths than separate them.
