    I've had my Corolla Hatchback 1.8 liters hybrid since June (driven 21000 km already) and it has been a good companion. Fuel consumption overall since start (measured at the pump) is 4.9 L/100 km (33% highway and the rest split between city and county roads). Before the Corolla I had a Golf 7 and a Auris Hybrid. The Corolla is a big step up from the Auris. The driving reminds me a lot of the Golf.

  • @Kyntteri
    @Kyntteri 4 роки тому +23

    This was one of the reviews that confirmed my personal experiences(bias) with the car and we decided to purchase one. It has good enough amount of power to tackle the highway traffic situations and I like how ICE is often off in the slow midtown stop&go pacing. When the the engine actually starts it's mostly unnoticeable event as itself. I like the sport seats as they are supportive and comfortable (featured in this video) and interior in general, clean and clear. Automatic parking break as you put the car in park is also nice thing. Depenging on trim you can get the AHS lights that have worked for me very well and driving in the dark for once was a bit less stressful. Supension is very much into my liking and steering is also no frills into the business sort of kind, it does what it's supposed to do. Small but nice things here and there.
    However even this car is not perfect (well duh). The satnav is a bit clumsy, as so many have already pointed out, is not winning any awards if there's a category for them. For me that's really not an issue as I had a Garmin from the previous vehicle and it's doing its job mostly flawlessly now installed in this. I have studded tires (Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8) and the low frequency hum carries into the car very pronouncedly even at low speeds if the asphalt is bare at any point.
    That last road noise part goes to the test next Monday as I have it fitted with 205/55 R16 Continental EcoContact 6 set. I chose that size as the low profile 225/45 R17 default is meant for good roads that we don't really have here.
    I'll be back... with the info and stay tuned. Or don't. Choice is yours. e: added information about the tyres.

      @@autogefuehl Summer tire, to no big surprise is much better on bare road and noise levels went down quite a bit. However if the road surface is very coarse then at least with Conti's, the sound carries again into the cabin with ease even at 80km/h. But It's hard to mitigate that as after the winter busy roads usually are at appaling condition here and start to smooth out again in later summer.

      A big miscalculation for Toyota USA to believe that their customers don't want wagons.
      Believably that's because they want to protect the greater profit margins of Crossovers and avoid any product sales cannibalisation.

      In Canada we love wagons........... the Toyota Venza all wheel drive wagon was a huge seller here but it wasn't very popular in the USA probably because they frown on 4 wheel drive in the deep south so Toyota cancelled it from the North American market. I guess the Canadian market isn't big enough to carry a popular car. :(

One of the best things for me was that you never stop talking about the missing Android Auto and Apple Carplay. I hope this makes them work harder and faster to implement it. On the noise in high speeds - the car has 18" wheels also check the tire manufacturer as the OE is not the best you can get.

      German cars used to be really reliable and good but they put too much half-proven tech like Direct injection (without dual injection like in Lexus), Turbo everything, failing dual-clutch transmission, failing 100 sensors, etc. Works fine for probably 160k Km but not comparable to Toyota reliability. Early 2000 Benz, BMW, VW are really good, the diesel are excellent, but emission regulation choke all Diesel to death. I wish VW go back with regular torque-converter from ZF or reliable Aisin, no turbo, no GDI only, no more sensors in everywhere and can be as reliable as Mazda or Honda. Less electronics and sensors, less problems.

    Wonderful review of a very practical car that Toyota continue to refuse to sell here in the US. For the Corolla we only get the sedan in hybrid and then only with the 1.8liter powertrain from the Prius and only in the LE trim. So if you want a higher trim in this class of car you have to go with the Prius and there continues to be no hybrid option or estate option with the two liter; it's HB and sedan only and gas only.

    Reliable, Quiet, very efficient, full independence suspension and good balance. Perfecting the previous generation with TNGA handling and rigidity. The main point of this 2.0L engine is power and efficiency with dual injection like newest TFSI from VW. This dual injection solve carbon build up that plague KIA/Hyundai, VW, Ford, and other Direct injection cars. It is proven technology from 10 years back in Lexus and 20 years in Prius.

    Great Review. I like the spec of the hybrid estate you have there (longer wheelbase & practical, but seems a little cramped?). HUD? Shame you think the ride is a bit iffy - ride is important! 9:56, yes, how things change! Great hybrid economy, though I think I'd prefer the ability to drive around in electric much more, ie a PHEV with a decent big battery (there aren't many). And think I prefer the German PHEV transmission system rather than this CVT system - though I'm not sure! Many thanks Thomas for - one again - your calm & professional video. Hope you had a nice Christmas.

      Bit weird that this one had no HUD, in my country it's available as a standard in higher spec. Ride in my opinion is OK, noise - a bit irritating at higher speeds. As of gearbox - yes, eCVT (completely different animal to CVT!) can make engine a bit noisy during hard acceleration, but only then. It's so smooth during driving and especially during maneuvering (electric motor helps here too). Biggest advantage is that is has no clutch, no dual-mass flywheel, only few moving parts and is practically indestructable.
      Generally I have the same feelings about this Toyota as Autogefuhl :)

    Actually the Carplay/Android Auto lack is solved. New models already get it in January and all the 2019 models get a upgrade starting from May or June 2020. My dealer informed that it’s about 50€ upgrade.
    We took the delivery in July for a fully maxed out Corolla TS with panoramic roof and it’s strange that judging by having blind spot monitor and JBL sound system equipped for this car in the review it does not have HUD display which ours has as a standard With Luxury Plus package.
    We are very happy with the car by the way. It drives superbly on highways and the road noise disappeared with M+S tires. It’s actually very quiet now. eCVT is superb for everyday use in traffic etc. The AVG fuel consumption with current temperatures (around 0°C) is stable 5,6l/100km with the 2.0L hybrid.

    Another good review Thomas, well done to you and your team. Interesting that your car had the optional 18 inch alloys. Here in the UK, 18s aren't available as an option on the Touring Sports. We considered one of these as a replacement for our 4 series Gran Coupe diesel. Punitive company car taxes here in the UK have made diesels too expensive to consider 😟. With 2 lanky teenagers and a large dog weve decided to go for a RAV 4 but we will miss our BMW. Toyota really needs to rush through its improvements to the media systems and led lighting in this coming year. The European market has always been discerning and, if you are charging premium money for a product, it needs to be able to stand the scrutiny it will inevitably endure from journalists and customers alike.

      Hey Steve. I also drive the BMW 4 Gran Coupe Diesel and am thinking of getting the Corolla now. How much of a downgrade (if any) was the move. I'm worried that after driving the smooth BMW for 3 years I'll just end up complaining all the time with this car.

    • @steveb4012
      @steveb4012 3 роки тому

      @@tarunkaila Hi There, due to COVID, all our original plans were put on hold, ( this was to be my wife's company car) we had eventually ordered a RAV 4but that was cancelled too. Shame as that was roomy quiet and comfortable as long as you didn't rev too hard and make the cvt gearbox complain! When WLTP car taxation came into force here in the UK, the Toyotss were taken off the car list. We are now awaiting a BMW X1 M SPORT Hybrid. We've test driven it and that is definitely not a downgrade after the 4 series. A diesel would have been nice but the tax savings are huge for the hybrid. Hope this helps.

      @@steveb4012 hey! Thanks for writing back. Does the X1 that you're looking for come with AWD? That would probably be why you don't feel the change from a primarily RWD of the Gran coupe. Another thing, my main motivation to move away from the Gran coupe is the impractical boot shape, it looks great but won't fit anything more than two large suitcases in there. I believe the X1 allows the rear seats to be slid forward to free up more boot space. Do you find the space to be more?

    • @steveb4012
      @steveb4012 3 роки тому

      @@tarunkaila Hi again, it is SORT of AWD with the electric motors driving the rear wheels in certain conditions., otherwise its mainly FWD but handles very well for an SUV. Boot space ( trunk, I don't know where you're from!) The Gran Coupe is around 480 litres from memory, the X1 in diesel and petrol variants is 505 litres and 450 in PHEV. it is a far more useful shape even in PHEV format matching the X3 PHEV for capacity. We had an F31 3 series Touring and the X1 was more practical.

The C-HR was a great car, but I needed a bigger car so bought the Corolla 2.0 touring sport (also known as an estate 😂). Prior to the C-HR I had a 2017 BMW manual M140i that after a year I sold it as the ride quality was bloody awful! The Corolla 2.0 is a great all rounder, economical, very comfortable, superb ride quality, loads of space & the 2.0 hybrid drivetrain is great.
