The last song of Queen with Freddie. Weird to know that he went after this. I wasn't around in the time of Freddie, but I wish I had been. Freddie, if you can see us, just know we love you, buddy.

I remember I was in a record store called Brashes when the announcement came over the store PA system that Freddie had died. It was overwhelming, people crying openly and the stored played Queen albums for the entire day. He really was an absolute legend.

It's inconceivable that this song isn't better known; it's heart-wrenching beauty and the context put it in a class of it's own. The moment I found out that Brian sings at the end because freddie never managed to finish it broke my heart...

Freddie was in pain when singing this song - when leaving his fans this treasure. I go through mixed emotions when I hear this song, happy i'm remembering my Freddie and sad he was feeling awful at the time of the recording and that we no longer have him around. What a devotion he had to the fans that loved him dearly. He really gave us his all till the very end. So darn sweet of Brian to complete this song for his brother and friend. That just makes this song so very special. This is cliché but love you and miss you much Freddie!!!

Saw bohemian rhapsody movie yesterday. I was surprised at how emotional it made me feel. He will live forever in his fans, friends and family hearts.

Queen's best and most meaningful songs were written in the year that Freddie was dying. Freddie wanted to sing as much as he could before his final hours. It still baffles me how he manages to sing so bloody well in his terrible condition!?!?! Every person on earth knows at least one song (usually we are the champions or we will rock you) not necessarily knowing that queen wrote it.

Allison it is about wanting to go back to a time of peace in life...childhood. Brian May explains this in one of his many interviews here is one clip:
"Mother Love" was the last song that Brian May wrote with Freddie Mercury. The song was featured on Queen's last album with Mercury at the helm, Made In Heaven. Together they were looking for a vehicle to showcase Mercury's new "inward-looking style." Knowing that Mercury didn't have long to live, May wanted to write a song that talked about the universal longing we all feel for the safety and warmth of our infancy.

His hollering cry to the massive crowd in 1985 during Live Aid Concert and their mimicry is otherworldly, toward the end of the song! It has to be the most haunting cry ever in the history of concerts, knowing that he was dying and gave it his all in his swan song. It doesn't even sound like a concert, but a frikking football game full of spectators. What a rush!

I believe Freddie sung this amazing track circa May 1991. The track was recorded in a small recording studio in Montreux. This was the last song he sung.
The reason Brian May sung the last verse is because Freddie was too ill to continue. Freddie hadn't died, but he was at the stage where the AIDS-related virus had really started to affect his health.
He is still the greatest singer to ever grace this earth.
that's true, brian may said that in his words, he said that freddie said that it didn't feel right at the moment so he also said: i'm gonna go take a drink i'll be back later to finish this, but he never came back to finish it. i think it's beautiful to know the story behind this track because if you know the story it will touch you more than it already did

I know Brian and Roger, John not as much. And can 100% confirm Brian finished this just under 4 years AFTER Freddie had passed away.
It's believed to be Freddie's gift to Brian. He did indeed say "I just need to rest for a while" and no, didn't come back.
Officially it was written (on scraps of paper by Freddie and Brian) and each line performed separately in May 1991. Freddie did 3 takes of every line and did his usual of sculling vodka as those mind blowing vocals were done AFTER he had stopped the medication prolonging his illness.
As such he sang this with pneumonia which says it all about how incredible he was, he actually couldn't even stand well by then.
Unofficially Freddie went back in to the Montreaux studio just days before he left for London in Nov 1991 where he died a few days later.
Only one person knows as they were with him, that has (and always will) remain a secret as to what he did.
But Roger and John have always felt Freddie left it deliberately before Brian's guitar solo and fully intended for Brian to finish it as one final collaboration.
Many think Brian did it while Freddie was alive but he didn't, he in fact couldn't face doing so for those couple of years as I'm going off what he's said here and that was that he knew he would always finish it but when he tried he found it was too upsetting.
So he finally did finish it late '94 and was worried he sounded too raw (you can hear that, he admits he was upset doing it) but they decided to go with it like that as it was seen as fitting which it is.
Apologies, that's one huge novel lol. But there you go, I can 100% promise that has come from the band themselves directly.
Oh and yes, Freddie IS in the official film clip. Many don't know that so if you haven't spotted him then watch it closely...they had him in his most iconic look with moustache.
It's a shame more don't know the song, many Queen fans don't realise it exists. When they find out then not surprisingly the tissues come out, it's an incredibly stunning but emotional song.
I am in Montreux, standing in the studio where this was recorded by Freddie and Queen, on the spot where he last stood (it's marked on the floor). And it's an unique experience!

anjinsan there are many people who fear aids as they should because they can’t be free sexually, there are side effects, there is the fear of dying and what new test might show, there is the fear of telling others, the fear of exposure, the fear of being isolated from others and the ultimate fear of dying before their time. Its so amazing and inspiring to hear the greatest vocalist of all time sing so powerfully in his last days and to hear brian mays soft voice finish this song after his dear friend and band member has saddly passed away. This song just reminds me that no one can beat freddie mercury.

Thank you, to Brian May, Roger Taylor, and ?Dean? for finishing this song and making the album which pays tribute to Freddie. I've gone back and listened to all of Queen's music; the music I missed all the years I was in graduate school--and it is all so beautiful. Keep making music!

What an trully all too human person he was with too many words to definitively define him. Talented. Flamboyant. Humerous. Generous. Loving. Caring. Famous. Mysterious. He loved life and life lived him. He lived a full life if not a short one.
