Surfer Girl, with 7-part harmony, unplugged, and Brian Wilson in good voice. What could possibly be better?? But what really moved me is when Brian got choked up during the very last chorus. Check out Mike Love's reaction to him... priceless. Thanks for the memories :)
July 2 2003. I was 11 years old. My family had friends over, people were swimming in the pool. My mom brought out a little boom box and started playing music. It was a Beach Boys greatest hits CD. I heard it from inside the house and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I grabbed a different CD, went outside, switched the CDs and took The Beach Boys one inside for myself. I sat in front of a stereo listening to it for hours. Life was never the same. Man, this music is something else. Never gets old.
The Beach Boys are my favorite bank of all-time, and this is my absolute favorite song of all time. Just over two minutes of perfection. Brian said it was the one time he found unconditional love in his songwriting.
All the people jokeing about brian looking disinterested clearly dont know what a life he has had and dont know they are watching a true genius at work
@Friendly Neighborhood Moron exactly.... Mike Love treaded on the coat tails of Brian and his late brother... sorry can't remember the brothers name...
I listened to that song during high school in the 60's and loved my little surfer girl. She would sit on the beach and watch me surf. What incredible times and I am grateful for them.
I think you can tell that Brian really misses his brothers in a lot of these reunion videos. It must be really hard for him to perform with the guys because remembers how it use to be and they're his brothers..:( R.I.P. Dennis and Carl Wilson. God bless you Brian Wilson.
Perhaps one of the reasons for Brian's seeming melancholy is that, with the exception of the bridge which was always his part, he is now singing Carl's part on "Surfer Girl." He knows he can no longer hit the high notes, and he knows Carl's part is where he is now needed.

Brian's pain is evident at about 2:00 and acknowledged by Mike Love. As I understand it, the Falsetto piece at that moment was written for Brian's brother, Carl, who had passed. Al Jardine's son Matt does a fine job but Brian's tears are telling. I was truly blessed having grown up with this masterpiece.

Got it. Thanks. In any event, Brian sure doesn't look too happy to be there. Not sure why, but there is lots to speculate over. It looks and sounds like the vocals were prerecorded and they are lip synching. The voices of the actual BBs seem to be buried in the mix. They are getting on in years, and their voices are not what they once were. Perhaps that disturbs the perfectionist in Brian. Al is not holding a guitar and seems to be uncomfortable about that. About a month ago The Beach Boys played a live concert in New Orleans at the Saenger. They were great and the big surprise was Al Jardine's son who sang like one of the original members. Total enjoyment!
What fool puts thumbs down to these icons of music. Beach Boys was and will always be awesome, they gave the world music magic, (with the brilliance of Brian Wilson) that took people to a great place. Luv them, their sound for ever.
I’m am 20 years old and these guys are my favorite group of all time. I heard them for the first time when I was only 10 or 11 and it was like my whole world changed. I just think that is a testament to their timelessness.
This song is special. I first heard Surfer Girl in my mom's restaurant in 1963. I was 6 years old. To this day, it remains one of the most beautiful love songs.
So much rightful emotion flowing from the Beach Boys here. Look at the glance Mike Love gives Brian Wilson at 2:12 after he tears up. "Surfer Girl" still empowers listeners to pursue idyllic and unconditional love.
I’m 71 years old and that song is in the top three favorite songs in my whole life. I saw them in person in 1969. I am a personal friend of a guy who played with The Beach Boys for a year and six months. He created an opportunity for my wife and I to meet Bruce Johnson and Mike Love on their 50th Tour (All Summer Long). The Beach Boys album “Pet Sounds” (Brian Wilson’s greatest compilation of music is my favorite album of all time.) They have stood the test of time.
That moment that starts from 1:45 (I will make...) to the end of the song is absolute harmonizing perfection and will never be repeated. No wonder Brian had to wipe a tear away. Amazing.
Wow, '74 in my college dorm with soccer buddies getting stoned, playing hearts, drinking Busch beer, and listening to Pet Sounds...what a great time to be into music.
Never tire of Surfer Girl... one of the greatest harmony songs ever...along with the video of those gorgeous girls surfing...timeless and grabs me over and over
Listen carefully to that extra unique harmony Brian adds at the end of the song at 2:17 . . . He loves it when he is creating , experimenting and changing things up.
This takes me so far back, and as someone else mentioned, Brian was in good voice. Looking back over these comments, over and over, "Brian is a genius, Brian is a genius, Brian is a genius,"
Awwwwwwwww,,,,,,,,,,,,my dream is to see and "meet" the Beach Boys before I die! I have been a fan for over 50 years.........their songs got me through a lot of rough times......so keeping my fingers crossed for a miracle:-)
As an avid surfer I always loved this song. I had a ‘woody’ that was a 57 Chevy wagon with windows all around. I got my mom to make curtains for all the windows. I had a bed in the back. I took that wagon surfing all the time. I’d get out of college classes at 1030 in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’d leave school with my surfboard and drive to Galveston and stay until dark. I used to go to Galveston 3-5 times a week. I also used to go to other surfing spots in Texas, like Freeport, Corpus Christi and Port Isabel. The surfing at Port Isabel was always good the waves were 4-6 feet and powerful. The only thing missing was a steady surfer girl. I still remember surfing one day. It was a hot summer day. I started surfing when the sun came up. About noon I went to a popular 7-11 at 37th street. It was next to the Galveston seawall. I used to go to that store to get drinks and snacks. As usual there was a long line. I was behind a stunning bikini clad girl. Her skin was dark from being in the sun. And because she just walked into the cold store her skin was covered with goosebumps. Those images have never left my mind. I wish I would’ve talked with her and got her number. Every time I hear the song ‘Surfer Girl’ my mind goes back to that moment I stood behind that girl.
Is he really a genius? That would mean John Denver and Marty Robbins are geniuses as their production and quality were as good as Brian's. I have never been a big BB fan as I felt their music was too "clean", lacking the R & B that I love about rock and roll. (ie Rolling Stones) But in terms of musical composition, I can see where some people will call him a genius.
@Cobb Knobbler Which singer/songwriters in the last 70 years would you call a genius?. For me, it would be Bob Dylan or Marty Robbins, with Marty being slightly better.
I have never heard a more pure and beautiful arrangement of this classic tune. With all of what remains of The Beach Boys with Brian, Al, and even the oh so arrogant Mike Love is there too. Everything about the vocals here is truly, over the top.
Just found this video…..ah Brian Wilson, there is no one like you on this planet. Absolute genius. My two favourite songs, God Only Knows and Surfer Girl, have some of the best harmonies ever written and performed. Thank you, Brian ❤❤

So much rightful emotion flowing from the Beach Boys here. Look at the glance Mike Love gives Brian Wilson at 2:12 after he tears up. "Surfer Girl" still empowers listeners to pursue idyllic and unconditional love.

I just noticed that after you mentioned it, Evan. Thanks.:)
tiffsaver It's the small details that make performances like this so memorable.

Ain't it the truth??
Evan Thompson Oh, shut up.
***** Katelyn, I think you are right.
What a great performance! They sound great even all these years later! Love The Beach Boys!
This made me feel so happy.
The sound of there absolutely gorgeous harmony still gives me chills! What I would give to hear them live in person
That moment that starts from 1:45 (I will make...) to the end of the song is absolute harmonizing perfection and will never be repeated. No wonder Brian had to wipe a tear away. Amazing.
This is how the angels will sound in heaven. 💕💕💕💕💕
Wow, '74 in my college dorm with soccer buddies getting stoned, playing hearts, drinking Busch beer, and listening to Pet Sounds...what a great time to be into music.
Wow! Brian sounded incredible!!!!
Never tire of Surfer Girl... one of the greatest harmony songs ever...along with the video of those gorgeous girls surfing...timeless and grabs me over and over
Was able to see Brian and Al live this past summer for pet sounds and it was absolutely amazing. Was my favorite concert I've ever been to!
Such Beautiful harmonies!
I have been a fan for over 50 years.........their songs got me through a lot of rough times......so keeping my fingers crossed for a miracle:-)
even my 83 year old mom loves this song and the beach boys in general.
2:13 A smile! May be the most poignant moment we have seen in decades. Thank you, Brian.
Never delete this piece of history.
Brian Wilson said," i don't like when people call me a genius ." Sorry Brian but I have to say, 'U R A GENIUS" ;)
Cobb Knobbler Brian Wilson is a musical genius and exhibits many of the same behaviors the guys you listed would as well.
@@mrbobevans who the hell is marty robbins ??
I have never heard a more pure and beautiful arrangement of this classic tune. With all of what remains of The Beach Boys with Brian, Al, and even the oh so arrogant Mike Love is there too. Everything about the vocals here is truly, over the top.
Mike Love the lead singer on all the old classics some of the best music ever made and he’s hated.
Beautiful! America’s Band is so great!
Just found this video…..ah Brian Wilson, there is no one like you on this planet. Absolute genius. My two favourite songs, God Only Knows and Surfer Girl, have some of the best harmonies ever written and performed. Thank you, Brian ❤❤
Absolutely the “GREATEST” vocal group of genius’s ever ! 😎
