I always adjust the distance based on the ppfd light reading, it's the only way to be sure. As for "Cheap Lights" I've been growing with LED's for the last 5 years, and I did not purchase expensive lights. Picked up 1 Mars-Hydro TS-600 for about $70. It works good with great results. So I bought another, and am now growing under two of them. I have less than $500 into my tent, lights, fans and other equipment, and the harvest are plentiful and potent! I now grow the best quality I've ever grown, and have been growing since the 70's.
Mars is awesome, first try growing indoors i got the TSL2000 tent setup this september, im trimming tasty nugs as we speak. common sense and good seeds is the main thing
Better you use DLI to adjust distance. And you are 100% right about mars hydro they a good lights i use viparspectra XS 1500 and thé p1000 and thé results are amazing.
Mars-hydro are very affordable but they are far from being cheap . And they have a good reputation from consumers. I have the Mars-hydro T-2000 and I’m very satisfied with its performance. I’ve noticed there are a few designer lights out there that are way overpriced but I’d rather stay with what is proven to be effective.
Agree with you on quality too , Ive had 3 mars Hydro lights & all have had electrical issues , Ive still got the 2 viparspectra Lights i started with & they work great still after 3 years & My AC Infinity Evo 8 I feel i will have forever as its so efficient in power & the quality is outstanding . 😎
I’ve had 6 mars hydro lights. None have had electrical problems. The first 2 I bought lasted for 8 years. Other 4 are much newer but no issues to speak of.
If all you intend to do is start plants for transplanting outdoors you don't need grow lights and can get much cheaper lights without the word "grow" in front of them. 5000K, 5000 lumen works. Don't have other light sources hitting this grow area especially when the lights aren't on. That's it.
I’ve flowered autoflowers in same tent as photos and there was zero difference maybe she took a few days longer but I was super impressed either way how dank and potent she was. I learned not to play with auto when they are grow. I don’t even LST them just let em grow. I did it to prove to my friend that photos can grow just as fast and give you bigger yields and u can clone. So I vegged the tent with 2 auto 2 photos. I flipped the tent when the autos started to flower So it was a 26 day veg and my photos were 2 x as big but I was impressed with the potency of the auto flowers they were super frosty 84 days for the autos and 95 days from seed to harvest was photos so I truly believe newbies should learn on photos and not autos, there will be more upset people than happy
And yes the autos were finished about 10 days before the photos but they did have about 2 weeks of flowering head start on photos cause they take 14 to show Sex
I grow them together too. But I flip to flower when the autos are done that way they get hours of light, which means bigger yields. And you get a mini harvest to enjoy while you wait for the photos to finish.
I underestimated the amount of heat ED'S give off. I installed a second Vivosun VS1500 and came back two hours later to a temperature reading in my tent of 96 degrees and a huge spike in the temperature of the room my tent is in. We're talking mid 70's with the AC on full blast.
5:40 No... Autoflowers do NOT require 18/6 lightcycles... Thats why we have them in the first place... Autoflowers do grow and change to flowering independent of the light cycle
Cannabis is a c3 plant and does not require dark cycles during vegetative stage - it is able to perform all of its metabolic functions under 24 hours of light without any drawbacks. the only reason to give vegging cannabis dark during veg is to save on electricity costs related to lighting/AC, however there is an argument that under 24 hours of light you can shorten the total days of veg required, which leads to an equivalent savings of electricity when switching to 12/12 for flower early. IMO the only reason to go 18/6 for veg and not 24hrs is if you are on tiered electricity pricing and see substantial savings by not having the lights/ac running during peak usage times
@Blazeproudman I've done it before with no problems but I vegged for 2 weeks after. Maybe it could shock them if you only do a few days then switch to 12.
@@Blazeproudman I always give my kit a couple of hours rest but give the autos 22hrs all the way through.18 to 24 wouldn't be a problem but I'd make it 22hrs.
Works only for hydro systems and possibly crop steering with dialed in watering regimes You need dark cycles if growing organically and or in soil because there are important chemical and other processes happening in the rhyzosphere. Nothing grows in nature where there are extremely long periods of harsh Sunlight Plants need rest
@@loopmantra8314 keep telling yourself that i guess? I veg my clones for 21 days, in organic soil, under 24 hour light @ 1250 PPFD and 1000PPM Co2 and they fill the tent, they grow so fast its nearly visible to the naked eye. If there is some harm im causing to them, I cannot fathom what it could be.

I built my own lights using 4 QB 648 boards with heat sinks perfectly spaced and mounted on a aluminum frame. I have a 8' 4x4 Gorilla tent and I mounted the HLG-600H-54AB Meanwell driver outside the tent on the wall. I have a apogee PAR meter to help me set light intensity and height with the ratchet ropes. I am in my first grow and 19 days into flower par is 900-1000 lights are 18-24 inches above plants temp is held steady at 73 degrees. plants love it.
Hyphotonflux , and aglex have been treating me very well! So far I’m on my second grow w them. And for the price I don’t care if I don’t get another one., looking to get some new ones for my new tents anyway
I was given warning that i would be raided, i decided to dump my lights, 6 Lumatek 600 Pros in my lake behind my house. They spent 6 weeks in 3 meters of water! I recovered them and all worked after only waiting a day to drain the light rails. The drivers were waterproof. So maybe thet should add a new quality factor, immersion resistance. The raid never happened 😂, back to square one now.
I’ve grown for 20 years I think a lot of people overthink shit I mean, I get it if you got a room with 600 plants on people investing in your business or something like that but if you are running a 2 x 4 or 4 x4 or 5x5 Just learn how to listen to your leaves Watch them and see what they do. They will tell you everything that you need to do if you learn how to diagnose what they’re telling you and listen what your eyes.
HLG 600R an Ac infinity ionframe6 are absolutely amazing lights, just wish HLG could remove driver as gets bit warm during summer especially living in very hot place
I recently added some 8" A/C duct coming in right on top of the plate and driver - much cooler tent when the whole plate is at 72°F - I love those lights - just got the AC Infinity UVA's & going to add them starting tomorrow - cheers
I just upgraded from cmh to leds went with the spiderfarmer se5000 and se3000 and also the sf1000 for babies clones n mini veg in 2x2 se5000 in a 4x4 and se3000 in 3x3 the latter two for flowering these replaced 3 x 600w cmh’s and a 250 mh for my baby tent. Only things I’ve noticed since changing is growth is all round slower and they drink about half as much maybe a tad less went from 3 full feeds a week to one !!! Soil was always bone dry after 48 hrs under hid’s now my soil takes 5 days to dry back so it’s one full feed and then just water ph’d and with some calmag and recharge so feed then water then feed etc etc not noticed anything v spectacular as yet maybe levee halve slightly more blades on them, end of week one of flower my first run with leds, wish me luck 😁

Great video. Especially for new LED growers. Finding the right height was the one that I messed with longer than I would have liked when I first started using LED. Manufacturers recommendations and ePar readings are all well and good, but in real world use it's the plants themselves who decide. I find the Manufacturers recommendation on height is always so far off that I have no idea how they get their number. I start with ePar readings and adjust from there. I normally end up in the 16-18 inch range all through seedling and veg stages. I sit at 25% for seedlings and 50% for veg.
25% for seedlings ? i am having problems with seedlings stunting or just stopping after the first set of leaves but ive got my xs1000 at 70% ....can they get too much light in the first 2 weeks?
@@HLBNZ could too much led light cause them to go into shock ? IF i do get one to grow its stunted all the way through, Im trying some proper high grade seeds and root juice
After figuring this out mostly on my own. You said it, way too quickly about 800 to 1000 par no matter what size room or tent those plants need that much during flower corner to corner 😉 thanks
I have grown outdoors and indoors for well over fifteen to twenty years. And single handedly the worst thing people do is over feed and over water. Remember less is more. If your grow room is uncomfortable for you then your plants will also be miserable.
Excellent info, thanks for sharing. I'm waiting for seeds to get in this Tuesday. I'm going to be growing outside in a greenhouse. I'm assuming that the natural sunlight light will be sufficient to cover this whole spectrum of lights the plants need, after all, it's plant's natural light lol. I will have solar fans in the greenhouse for air circulation. I don't want mold issues 🤦
I just switched from Bestva to NextLight. In 2 days, I have noticed a rise in heat. And a demand for more water. I am 22" from the canopy. I have concerns I may not have enough red?😢
Yes mate they are a very good brand, possibly the best. Ive got the lumatek zeus pro 600w 2.7, its an animal of a light ! I would be very careful with the intenstity of these lights though. Ive also found that hanging height should be almost double what the manufacturer states. Start it off using only 25% power and hang at about 100 - 120cm from seedlings. As the seedlings get bigger over a week or 2, lower the lights down to about 60 - 50cm still at 25% power. Keep the lights at about 50 - 40cm hanging height at 25% power for atleast another couple of weeks of veg, until they get bigger. Then you can bump the power up to 50% but start hanging the light from about 80cm above canopy and let the vegging plant grow into the lights but just be very careful and watch out for light bleeching and red streaks on stems from too much light. You will never need to go more than 50% power throughout veg and could probably get away with only using 25% throughout veg but you’d have to drop the lights to about 30 - 40cm from canopy. Im not sure the penetration potential would be that good at 25% though so like i said, after a week or 2 into veg, bump up to 50%. My lights are currently at 70cm in veg and are thriving. I started them at 80cm and they have grown 10cm already into the light. Im keeping a close eye on the plants for any bleeching now. When you are ready to flip to flower, id still keep the lights on 50% but lower the lights to the canopy where its comfortable. At this stage you will probably be hanging them around 60 - 50cm, maybe lower if the plants will take it. Then when the buds form after about 3 - 4 weeks of flower, i bump the lights to 75% power and raise the lights about 80cm from top of canopy to start with. If the plants still look good then lower slightly until you feel they are in their prime. You will only then turn the lights to 100% for the last 2 weeks of flower but be extremely careful as these lights at full power can easily burn the plants. Most importantly, keep the humidity levels at 65 - 70% from seed, all the way up until week 2 of flower, then lower it week by week, 65%, 60%, 55%, 50%, 45%, 40% ( final week of flower ) hope this helps 👍🏼
I did a side by side with the same strain "Critical " one with 72 hours of darkness and one with 12 on and 12 off. I see a density increase in the 72 off. I personally prefer the 72 off. But to each there own.
If i can find the study again ill send it but potency decreases a lot after 48hours of darkness. You are better off with 12/12 or 24hours of light to finish with, and if you want to increase your yield do your first 4 weeks of flower as 14on/10off
@@evzevz06 That makes so much sense , Once they are triggered to flower it's ingrained , so pushing the day length a little can only result in more material , but too much more for too long will 'untrigger ' them and make veg th priority :)
I got gifted a 4x4 light that seems to be very good. The plants love it so far but it has no controls or ability to plug in a controller. I would love to be able to adjust the intensity so that I’m not only relying on adjusting the distance. I’m worried as the plants get taller it will be too much light for them. Is there something I can buy that the controls the intensity through the plug that goes in the power outlet?
The only thing you need to chack after lights out, is that theres no light leaks, never trust the green light. One scratch and thats regular light shining through.
@@anneStrackRheinmetallIf the meter has an ePAR setting, for "extended PAR", I know they detect IR, and I'm pretty sure any UVA/UVB, that plants can use for photosynthesis. Mr Bugbee is popularly known as a scientist, doing space farming with NASA, and at Utah State University, where he's The Director of The Crop Physiology Laboratory. And what crop? Hemp, of course! He's been working with low THC plants for several years, now, and always in a controlled environment. He was getting funding from NASA only, but now it's half NASA, half Cannabis people. The distance to the plant roof is the most important thing! LED light doesn't penetrate as deeply as that of these lamps! That's why 1500 ppfd on the tips of can is best as it still supplies the lower shoots with a good 750 ppfd! That's my experience, but I also use co2 (air bombz and co2 boost!) even if I don't reach 32° Celsius! And I think the result can be seen! Good succeed! Leaf surface temperatures is a problem with led lights. How energy efficient are they if you heat your grow space to 85 to get a leaf temp of 75? Most people are not thinking about leaf surface temps and VPD. Black Dog LED and Kind LED recommend ambient room temp of 85 but Spider Farm recommends room temp of 75. I’m not sure how well known this problem is. Hopefully this will be debunked or they’ll start designing led lights that can heat the leaf surface better
There's so much conflicting information out there though. One grower says they only use $15 LED shop lights and another says that high-end $$$$ grow lights are the way to go. As a new indoor gardener who only has UA-cam videos as a means to learn this craft, what do I do?
depends entirely what you are growing.. If you are growing lettuce the shop lights are fine but if you plan to have any fruiting or flowering plants [such as cannabis] the shop light will do fuck all.
Build your own led lights you’ll save money and get a better light in the end. Companies like hlg sell their refurbished boards for like $20 you can build a 5x5 tent light for less then $200

If its just one plant, then a cheap 80-100w LED should work just fine for the first weeks and months. If you Just need an extra light in your Greenhouse as an additional light source to the sun, then a 100w LED will be enough to support larger plants
This is wrong. LEDs are duble as efficient as high pressure sodium lights! LED have two times more light with the same wattage, or you can use less watt with the same amount of light.
you are very right, the biggest factor missing in LED in my eyes is the infrared heat. If you compare HPS and LED side by side, plants under HPS look slightly bigger and the internodium is slightly longer. I have seen top LED lights in perfect environment not producing more per watt than HPS. Big industrial growers still use HPS why should they if LED is better? For me the only good argument is if you have a heat problem and you're enclosure gets above 28°C (82,4°F).
Great video! Just my experience, you should never waste money on name brand grow lights. I buy all my lights on alibaba or aliexpress and have never had an issue. Always great harvests and the lights last. It’s not difficult to build a quality LED.

I have 2 grow lights from Harbor freight for $20 each. Am I have amazing production out of my plants. Planted last weekof December. I posted a short on youtube showing from december till now.
Can a light cause appliances to short out? I just purchased an Evo 6 recently. I fear it, &or my space heater, are the cause of the fridge shorting out. The appliance is fairly new (few years old), the grow light purchased black Friday installed a couple weeks ago. This issue didn't happen when I was using a lower wattage light(120w maximum) at full power & space heater simultaneous. The Evo hasn't been higher than 3 on the dial. So I figured it comparable wattage to the older light. The fridge will still sort with only the light(as well).
@@Ledgrowlightsdepot I think it was a bad circuit/fuse in the appliance. The faulty piece in the fridge was replaced. And no issues as of the moment. Also, the fridge would short without (both) the light OR space heater on.
Optic led has great lights only problem is it took 6 months to get replacement parts but I will give it to them they did send me 6 replacement parts which gave me a brand new light cause I have slim 480H
Im still old af i guess. Im still in 1000watt hps.😂 cant afford led. Big brands are $600+ each at high wattages. Hps is like $100 for 1k. I hope to make the change eventually. Just waiting on funds.
Also. Not all light wattage is the same. Putting a 100 watt light close to the plant while using a par meter to get dli isn’t right. You would run a 300 or bigger light at 30-50 % but on a little 100 watt you need more distance and more light like 60-100 percent. Learned that the hard way. Leads to over watering looking problems. Please feel free to chime in and share some more knowledge
Bro nobody gives 2 craps about the different specs of color. Just buy a Full spectrum light like nothing else matters. As long as it’s a HLG, King LED, Growers Choice etc that’s all that matters. You do not have to concern yourself with specs of light wt are u talking about. Cannabis grows nobody will say that bud had 3% more red or blue light gtfoh with that. Soon u said that I’m out.
Watts equal heat no matter the source. LEDs don't run cooler per watt than HID. Just more light per watt. 1000watts of DE cmh is exactly the same temperature as a 1000watts of Samsung 301H (any led!)✌️
But like you said you don't need as many watts to achieve same photon output. I unfortunately learned this starting off thinking my LEDs would be cool in the tent lol, but getting a better light with a detached ballast does help
@@suki4410 you don't understand what your reading, 1000w of LEDs output same heat as 1000w of metal halide or high pressure sodium. The difference is the light output from said 1000w being greater from an LED so yes more efficient per watt
@@nordicwarrior9566 This is just wrong dude.. So for example: 1000w (Input) LED produces - 100w of heat - 900w of light While the old 1000w ones would produce - 200w heat - 800w light So yeah. LEDs ARE cooler
3500°k only for everything...you can't go wrong...only Samsung lm301h EVO nothing else and you get 2gpw on average! 30w per sq/ft is more than enough...but 20w per sq/ft is way enough now!

yep. just listening to this guy has pump products written all over him. Definitely getting paid by sponsors. A true horticulturist wouldn't dissuade other options out there. Nor consider that not everyone out there is growing weed. My lights work great to get plants ready for 3 months prior to planting in garden. there's lots of options out there. And this video is the last option I would consider.

No... Autoflowers do NOT require 18/6 lightcycles...
Thats why we have them in the first place...
Autoflowers do grow and change to flowering independent of the light cycle
Yeah that one threw me completely off.
Iv run mine 24/7 for 3 years now no issues ever
Am 6 weeks into veg will it be ok to change form 18 hrs to 24 mid veg ?
@Blazeproudman I've done it before with no problems but I vegged for 2 weeks after. Maybe it could shock them if you only do a few days then switch to 12.
@@Blazeproudman I always give my kit a couple of hours rest but give the autos 22hrs all the way through.18 to 24 wouldn't be a problem but I'd make it 22hrs.

Grow light science only dose commercial lighting now, so, who would you recommend?
I made a plant turn yellow, that’s how I learnt

Yes. Seedlings need less light because they're developing roots.

Great job on the video 👍🏻, very informative.

Is Lumatek a good brand?
If you didn't use 2 clones your data is useless

How to get my room up to 88 degrees to get Leaf temps to 80 but in my grow tent only need is 82. So check your Leaf Temps you can't trust ambient air
You have to run a heater or you have to put a fan at the light to circulate that heat generated from the driver if your in a tent I guess

Why LED? They run cooler?
This is wrong. LEDs are duble as efficient as high pressure sodium lights! LED have two times more light with the same wattage, or you can use less watt with the same amount of light.
All you have to do is simple math to prove you wrong 😂
you are very right, the biggest factor missing in LED in my eyes is the infrared heat.
@@suki4410leds don't produce as good a bud as Hps and MH and CMH. Leds aren't great atol.

I get down with the cheapest spider farmer lights that aren’t even adjustable. Huge colas size of your fist. I don’t even PH water just use tap
So just figure it out. Great
Thanks that was handy

Thank you.
Great video! Just my experience, you should never waste money on name brand grow lights. I buy all my lights on alibaba or aliexpress and have never had an issue. Always great harvests and the lights last. It’s not difficult to build a quality LED.
This is a highly malicious advice.
cheap chinese noname leds have a track record of burnt out led diodes, short lifespan and fire risk
@@sinenomine4540 i just gave my experience man. Nobody has to listen to me. Buy whatever you want.
Try vipar spectre,
As Always each to their own for growing 🌱🌍 But Imo a "commen" mistake is to think it's "ok or ok'ish for short periods" to use a green light during lights off 🌱🌌 Because green light actually Penetrates DEEPER into the plants foliage than other spectrums 🌱👀 & so I personally would Never use a green light at night 🌌🌱 Happy growing everyone 🌱🌍
Great thought! From what I've heard our eyes can pick up green the easiest allowing us to use a much lower light intensity and still be comfortable. Let us know if there is any research showing where they things would cross over, that would be great! :D
Green is reflected and not absorbed by the plant so it doesn’t matter if it goes deeper .
@@sicuro5050 it actually by some degree Penetrates straight through the leaf structure & out the other side & science has proven plants Do use the green spectrum 🌱👀
@@sicuro5050 this.
otherwise, the plants wouldn't look green, but black instead.
Why do people have a problem with cheaper lights I have 2 80 dollar lights and they work great
I have 2 grow lights from Harbor freight for $20 each.
Am I have amazing production out of my plants. Planted last weekof December. I posted a short on youtube showing from december till now.
Guys, don't search for "grow lights" just get LEDs with the fitting Kelvin and Watts, they can be really cheap, "grow lights" are a ripoff.
There are too many amps on the circuit. You will need to plug something into another electrical circuit in your home.
@@Ledgrowlightsdepot I think it was a bad circuit/fuse in the appliance. The faulty piece in the fridge was replaced. And no issues as of the moment. Also, the fridge would short without (both) the light OR space heater on.
What do you recommend for a 5x5 tent? I want to get an ac infinity, i have the uis system
Grab an SE7000 755 watts
Nice ac infinity ad😂
CalMag deficiency? Ignoring VPD? Running the grow space too cool and too dry?
Optic led has great lights only problem is it took 6 months to get replacement parts but I will give it to them they did send me 6 replacement parts which gave me a brand new light cause I have slim 480H
Amazing 100% subbing up good job 🎉🎉❤
Eww
Im still old af i guess. Im still in 1000watt hps.😂 cant afford led. Big brands are $600+ each at high wattages. Hps is like $100 for 1k. I hope to make the change eventually. Just waiting on funds.
Can't afford LED but can afford the crazy electric bill with the HPS. Cheap and stupid are a dangerous combination.
LEDs produce the same btus per watt..you use less watts than bulbs
Migro aray 5x5 💪🏻🙌🏻👌🏻
Great info , shout out from New Hampshire
Plants do see green light.
Biggest mistake is to think you can measure amount of photons in percent of unknown wattage... And using a potmeter to do so...
Soon u said that I’m out.
exactly
I like viparspectra but I really like spider farmer myself
Watts equal heat no matter the source. LEDs don't run cooler per watt than HID. Just more light per watt. 1000watts of DE cmh is exactly the same temperature as a 1000watts of Samsung 301H (any led!)✌️
But like you said you don't need as many watts to achieve same photon output. I unfortunately learned this starting off thinking my LEDs would be cool in the tent lol, but getting a better light with a detached ballast does help
More light = less heat.
You dont know, what efficency is. LEDs are more efficient and have less heat.
@@suki4410 you don't understand what your reading, 1000w of LEDs output same heat as 1000w of metal halide or high pressure sodium. The difference is the light output from said 1000w being greater from an LED so yes more efficient per watt
@@nordicwarrior9566
This is just wrong dude..
So for example:
1000w (Input) LED produces
- 100w of heat
- 900w of light
While the old 1000w ones would produce
- 200w heat
- 800w light
So yeah.
LEDs ARE cooler
3500°k only for everything...you can't go wrong...only Samsung lm301h EVO nothing else and you get 2gpw on average! 30w per sq/ft is more than enough...but 20w per sq/ft is way enough now!
I used 8 dif brand/model of leds over past 7 yearz and as long as PPFD is on point they do just as good under Chinese LEDs as Samsungs just get a little more light with 301b/h which costs more $. I bought a hundred lights I might care but not just a few also I've had expensive lights break just like cheap ones ironically some of my cheap lights never had problems
how do you get a grow light with only 3500k 301h EVO LEDs? are there any instructions on the internet to purchase the strips and the drive to build one? I'm looking for a grow light with 3500K EVO LEDs (with or without 660nm red LEDs) but without any 5000K LEDs.

What about using heat mats? This video seems to be geared towards pot heads.
well yes, the majority of people interested in Hydro are in it for the ganj
This video has a lot of inaccurate info. 1st green light is not okay. And 2nd a 24 hour lights on is just as good if not better in my opinion.

yep. just listening to this guy has pump products written all over him. Definitely getting paid by sponsors. A true horticulturist wouldn't dissuade other options out there. Nor consider that not everyone out there is growing weed. My lights work great to get plants ready for 3 months prior to planting in garden. there's lots of options out there. And this video is the last option I would consider.
No one really tap on the importance of UV light during flowering,
any studies on that?
Or you could fix the pricetags by NOT wasting money on overpriced equipment.
