Questionable lyrics aside, Reb Beach on guitar is a monster.
This is absolutely truth. Reb is one of the unsung guitarists of the 80’s.
But yeah, the lyrics maybe haven’t aged so well. But it’s only one song.
It is art just like comedians Chapel today. Those lyrics are just wild not questionable.
Those lyrics are just messing with your head, teasing you and striking a taboo in a controversial way. Nothing's questionable in the lyrics, if you get the humorous and scandalous aspect right. Just enjoy the song. Don't take it too serious.
I agree!
@@ps5392 if the dude singing is 20 and she’s 17 what’s the issue. In the South they marry em off way younger than that….lol
Winger did not suck, hardcore metal guys always criticized the more mainstream hairbands because they saw it as a more mainstream pop brand of metal instead of a purist form of the genre, but most of us loved these bands and all of the other "pop" metal or hairbands, good music is good music and Winger played good music
Any band promoted by Stewart Stevenson probably does not suck.
Truth
Not only were the songs awesome but the guys at Winger musically could wipe the floor with most if not all hardcore metal guys
Kip Winger now composes classical music.
I went to see Kiss with Slaughter, and WInger blew both of them off Stage. I had new found respect after that Concert.
Kiss has a song called " Christine Sixteen" so yeah... Nobody gave a crap about the lyrics at the time, besides 17 was legal in most states.
I think most of those states were 16 if you were under 21, but 18 for 21 and over. I could be wrong
When this came out I was 11, so a 17 year old would've been a cougar to me.
😂😂😂
Winger definitely did/do not suck 😂 Reb Beach is a great guitarist. The 80's were different times, that's for sure 😂
And Kip killed it on bass
@@karlsmith2570 Yep 😊 Was really looking forward to seeing them next month , but they've pulled out of the UK tour (supporting Skid Row) 😢 Hopefully they'll get over here soon 🙏
I got news for you their "Pull" album is one of the most underrated albums ever..... Winger was a force, most of the "metal" guys were just jealous of Kip and his looks.... girls went fkn nuts for him at the time !!! Reb is what brought me to be a fan - he is an amazing guitarist !!! Very tight great sounding group !!!
"Headed for a heartbreak" reaction is a must \\m//
yes, Pull is their best work. Got that bluesy vibes, heavy songs, and worked lyrics. T check out Blind revolution mad, or Junkyard Dog
Absolutely Pull is their best album!! Great songs all over!!
Preach! Pull is their best work, showcasing their badness!
BTW, have you listened to their Anothagy and demo album? They have great stuff that never got released and one in particular is a song they did " Written in the Wind". That song is one of favorites
@@Broski_Nation I HAVE NOT !!! was not aware of them - THANK YOU for the heads up 🤘🤘🤘🤘
No, no one thought anything about it I dated seventeen year olds in my twenties.... 80's were the best time to be alive!! People didn't get offended by everything 😜
I graduated in 1989. Winger's first album came out in 1988. At that time, there were so many hair bands that were all putting out great music, and we jammed to them all. Winger was among those. The first album was great, and we loved it (check out Hungry, Headed For A Heartbreak, Madalaine and Time to Surrender). I distinctly remember putting Winger above many of the other bands, because I simply enjoyed the music. It was hard-hitting and edgy, Reb Beach was just amazing, and the songs simply rocked. The circle of friends I was in loved Winger. At the time, we didn't care that the music was formulaic, it was still good, and we spent many years listening to it (until we outgrew Seventeen). As at least one other commenter mentioned, we lived in a different time when it wasn't abnormal for an adult man to date a sixteen year old. I myself dated a sixteen year old at the age of eighteen, and we stayed together past her turning age eighteen. It was a different time. Yes, parents cared, but the kids did not. What the boomer parents of the time wouldn't tell you is that they did the same thing, but younger. Things are so hyper-sensitive today, and I don't subscribe to any of that mess. I'm a child of the 70's and 80's, and I refuse to be held hostage by such silliness.
We sure did live in a different time, I was bon in 71....boy how times has changed and not for the better.
Same here.
I feel sorry for the younger generations for having to miss the feeling of the 70s/80s. So carefree and such an easier going time. I too was born in 71 and graduated 89. Luckily my children grew up mostly as I did. So wish to be living in that time again.
When I was 17 I dated a 28 yr old. My mom never thought about it. My father was 35 when I was born, my mom was 17.
@@jeremiahrose4681 Me too. I was also born in 1971, graduated from high school in 1989. And I'm very proud to be from the Gen-X generation!
I've always loved this song it's a great song just for the record the age of consent is 16 in most States
Age of consent finally came around in the late 80s if my memory serves. It wasn't as big a deal back then. My junior prom had two 17 year old girls bring their 25 year old boyfriends. No one gave a sh*t. If you think this is cringy, look at the record label first. They dropped this single as soon as they could.
Most states statutory age limit back then was 16.
25 is alright but 30 would be the limit
I was 17 my boyfriend was 24, we've been married 41 years.
@@donnadubyak6504 As long as the guy is in it for the long haul, then it's ok in my opinion.
Well, in Europe, the age of consent is 17... in Asia it's 14 in some countries... 🙄In honesty, Winger wrote those lyrics to fit in w/ the 80's rock bands of the day... in reality, Kip Winger (vocals & bass) was a bit goody-two-shoes... he was a ballet dancer... married and then widowed, when his first wife Beatrice died in an auto accident in 1996. Kip Winger was also Alice Cooper's bassist in the 80's. It was kinda unfair that Winger became targeted by Beavis & Butthead (even Metallica had a Kip Winger 'pretty boy' dart board in their video for 'Nothing else matters') ...they just got caught up in the anti-80's rhetoric in the early to mid 90's. It killed their career...
Bassist Kip Winger was a top musician who rose in the 80's in Alice Cooper's band, but he wanted his own success... Labels would not take him seriously, but somehow, his managers allegedly tricked Atlantic Records head into signing Winger... Their music was similar to Bon Jovi's mega records in the 80's, and they had top talent w/ Rod Morgenstein (drums), Reb Beach & Paul Taylor (guitars) ...debut album in 1988 went platinum after the hit ballad 'Headed for a heartbreak' broke Winger into commercial success.
2nd album 'In the heart of the young' was more like a Journey album, and went platinum on the success of the ballad 'Miles away' and the rock single 'Easy come easy go'... However, the advent of the 90's and changes to the music industry put Winger in the back burner... 'Beavis & Butthead' mocking Winger was enough to kill their career - guitarist Reb Beach claimed that once the cartoon aired, Winger's sales stopped cold... 3rd album 'Pull' was finally released in 1993 (Paul Taylor had left the band) and it failed commercially, despite being a good record. Winger broke up... Reb Beach joined Dokken, and then Whitesnake in 2002... Rod Morgenstein played in Dixie Dregs, a prog band... Eventually, Winger did reunite in 2006 w/ Kip Winger, Reb Beach & Rod Morgenstein in the band and released the album 'IV'... They have been recording and touring often since then and are considered a stellar live band.
Besides 'Seventeen' (which was largely a gimmick)... their songs like 'Hungry'... "Can't get enuff"... 'Madalaine'... 'Rainbow in the rose' ... are not controversial at all.
"In Europe"? In Sweden age of consent is 15.
Wow, man, I forgot how many big hits winger had back then. These song titles took me back to my teenage years. I could hear them in my head as I read them and will definitely revisit a few. Don't forget the song battlestations on the bill and ted 2 soundtrack.
Thanks for the reminder and also the solid history breakdown.
This was arguably their biggest hit, but my personal favorite was Madellaine. Class of '85 here, right in the middle of 80s🤪❤. As for controversy over the lyrics, I don't recall any, but then again, by then Dee Snider ripped Al and Tipper Gore a new one over music ratings in congress, so they backed off lol. That was also in 85. As far as the suggestive lyrics, Stonewall Jackson released a song "Push the Panic Button" in 71. Its country but give it a listen,
Yep Madeline was bad af
Kip is a badass. But his guitarist, Reb Beech, is 1 of the most underrated guitarists of all time.
The 80’s was the best decade ever! I’m glad I grew up in it!
A 17 year old in the 80’s is equivalent to a 25 year old now.
I was Seventeen when this song came out. Loved it! I miss the 80’s!!! No one cared back then. (I was Seventeen, not dead!!)
Winger was later to the party when the hair bands were going away. They were very formulaic with their music (like they were created by an 80's hair band generator).
Agree... remind me of Britney Fox (Cinderella). I mean there was talent but they felt "invented" even back then. Were they going for a Tesla look/feel?
Hungry “is a great Winger song!!!
The drummer, Rod Morganstein, is one of the best drummers ever! He also played with The Dixie Dreggs! Cool timekeeping!!
Hell yeah!
Just saw the Dregs for the umpteenth time a couple weeks ago. Steve Morse Band opened. Near the end of the Dregs' set Van Romaine and Rod did a duet that just killed!
I have seen TONS of metal shows..... These guys were an opener for the Scorpions one time...
Straight up..... they killed it.
I was shocked.
Back then, not such a big deal. In the late 80’s when I was 16, my boyfriend was 23. And surprisingly a pretty successful guy not a scumbag as they usually are. My mom liked him a lot. 😂
I also wanted to add that she was 14 when she started dating my dad, who was 18. She had me at 19. And no, we’re from a large metropolitan area in the US, not the sticks. It just wasn’t unusual at the time to date an older guy.
exactly that was normal back then and nobody gave it a 2nd thought
Winger got a bad rap back then and they had some really good songs. Most of the members were in Alice Cooper's band, the guitarist Reb Beach in in Whitesnake now.
Most states now have 16 for age of consent, 11 states have 18 for theirs
Winger had some other great songs,
Easy Come Easy Go
Hungry
Madeline
In my veins
"Battle Stations" is shred happy.
80’s were wild! I’m 60 and oh, the memories!
Saw Winger when I was 17! They absolutely do not suck!
We might’ve called it “Panty Metal” back in the day but they really had some impressive intricate music! Always liked them!
at the time, it was just a song, nobody thought anything out of the ordinary..now almost 40 years later, just shows how the "sleezy" the 80s were! we loved it!
I remember when this song came out T and believe it or not it wasn't a big deal. Most of my friends were like 23 to 25 when I was 17 and they were all dating schoolgirls at the time nobody thought anything of it. Times have changed brother. Lol
They have a lot of good songs. "Madalaine", "In The Day We'll Never See", "State of Emergency" for example.
If it makes you feel any better about the song lyrics, in 31 states the legal age of consent is actually only 16
He needs to listen to Benny Mardones next 😂
@@ckobo84 , what i was going to suggest .
So you have your next vacation planned out already? 31 states? 😂 trying to justify hooking up with a 17 year old
@@ckobo84 man you killed me LOL
It’s not about the law it’s the morality
It's important to remember that it was the 17-year-old girl who was saying *she* would show *him* "lovin' like you've never seen". No, there wasn't any backlas at all. It was HUGELY popular, with guys and girls. Plenty of 17-year-old girls were very open about the very pornographic things they wanted to do with Kip Winger, and pretty much any other hair band member.
What were we doing in the 80's? Sex, drugs, and rock & roll, baby!!
I was lucky enough to have moved to LA at the height of the hair band craze and spent many a night hanging on Sunset Strip. Fucking crazy fun (and often bizarre) times.
Check out Winger's newest 2023 release. "Proud Desperado" - If they were making music like this back in the day, they never would have been made fun of.
It was great seeing your reaction to this song. I hope you react to Britny Fox - Girlschool.
We didn’t even think twice. Look at KISS’s “Christine Sixteen” 😮
I hear it now and it’s as cringeworthy as you’re saying 🫣
This reaction made me laugh and smile. I wore this cassette tape out. The innuendo was perfect because I was 19 when the song hit MTV...
This is one of my favorite bands hands down and they are so underrated
Battle Station by Winger is awesome. Guitarist Reb Beach is a little underrated, boy can shred 🤘
That’s a great song! From one of the Bill and Ted soundtracks, iirc.
@@ps5392 That's right, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, great soundtrack!
They're one of my favorite bands growing up! Still is 🤘😈
Lol. Honestly in the 80s, 17 was no big deal. I was 17 dating a 25 year old lol. Keep in mind at 17 I already graduated high school, worked 2 jobs, had my own apartment, and paid all my bills. Different maturity level than most 17 year olds now. The 80s were a MUCH different time. Lots of parties, concerts, and fun.
In the 80s, I was managing my 2 sons rock band. I became a Winger fan because of their music was more rhythmically interesting than just about anyone else. I turned 80 last year and my children gave me a Winger shirt and had a video of the band singing Happy Birthday to me. The original lineup is still out there rockin! BTW, I have a MA in music.
Back when this came out we were all like yeah so? Your reaction is hysterical!
It was a different time! No backlash then. I would love for you to have tasha reacted too this one😎😎
Finally!!!! You're the only reactor to check out WINGER! Headed for a Heartbreak/Miles Away are the best!! Thank you 🤘
No backlash when it dropped at all; it was Top 40 lol! I graduated in 1986, I met my future wife in 1985 when I was 18. Guess how old she was? You got it; 17🤣
Haha, I was 17 when this song came out.
Musically this song kicks ass! Rod Morganstein the drummer played with the Dixie Dreggs fusion band also. Also in the Dreggs, Steve Morse who now plays for Deep Purple
I think its important to understand the difference between ages then, and now.
Back then, 17 was very much more an adult in comparrison... people were getting kicked out of their parents house at 17 and 18, and had to grow up very quick. The one girl in my grade 11 high school class had a 31 yr old fiancee... and that was the start of me feeling that might be a little weird. Young people are treated more like 'children' now, and aren't really expected to grow up so fast. It was a different time.
I cranked this album in my car driving down the main strip in our city on Friday nights and no one batted an eye at all. I'm pretty sure we played this song at school dances.
I was 17 when this song was out....I'm 52 now...hey, I'm still listening to it! And I still wish that I was everything Kip needed!! LMAO!! "She's everything I neeeeeeeeed!! Seventeen!!"
Kip Winger now writes classical music and it is very impressive!
He got his start with Alice Cooper, and is now winning awards with Mozart 😳
But listening back, they were touching on the " Orchestra Metal" with a lot of their songs.
we didnt too much care when this song came out , because we were only 18 , 17 & 18 , no big deal :P
Some other bands back then were also writing songs about underage liaisons lol. Motley Crue's "All in the Name Of" and Kiss "Christine 16" come to mind.
That whole Winger debut album is the shizzle.....and your reaction is totally hilarious. The shock is palpable.
I was laughing from the start anticipating your reaction to the lyrics! Watching you realize what he was saying was priceless!!! 😭🤣😂
Winger rocks. I don't care what people say.
The culture back then was younger girls wanted to date older guys. That’s just the way it was.
That was just what we did back then.
The Beatles said she was just seventeen but you know what I mean.
'I Saw Her Standing There'. Kip Winger mentioned that song in interviews.
omg yes!!! winger is one of my fave bands by FAR, they're absolutely amazing live!! their album "pull" is one of my top faves, highly recommend!!
Recommended Winger Song: Deal With The Devil, Rat Race, Pull Me Under, and Midnight Driver of A Love Machine
There was actually no backlash. Different times i guess. All i can say is... WOW!!!
Back when this came out, we didn’t bat an eye.
As someone who was big fan of Winger (mainly for guitarist Reb Beach) previous to B&B, I thought the joke about Stuart was hilarious and cracked up whenever he popped up with that shirt. They have a lot of fantastic albums and have another coming out. I was a Thrash guitarist in the 80s and my peers gave me some shit about liking Winger--until "Heading For a Heartbreak" came out then they got it. They ended up seeing them with me multiple times after that.
I'm so glad someone reacted to Winger. Some other great songs they do are headed for a heartbreak, Easy come easy go, can't get enough, miles away. I love this band. This is probably the least favorite of their songs. They don't get enough credit. They got put in that "pretty boy band". A lot of people did like this song
I was in high when this came out. It's funny to see the reactions when they realize what the song is about 😆
GOD I miss the 80's!!!!!!!!!!
The 80's was a great time, my friend! 17 is legal almost everywhere!
Winger was a good band. Whether 1988 or 2018, America has had an issue with "17" and what has long been debated as to what "the legal age of consent" should be. Europe, not so much. Fact is most hair bands were YOUNG, THEMSELVES. Many not much older than 18 or 19. (Michael Schenker was touring at 15...and there are others).
It was only when they became "Winger" that "17" had legal and PR ramifications for the band. It really doesn't otherwise. When we were that age (16-22) then 16-22 was "fair game and they all looked the same." Around the age of males "sexual peak" (that's about 18 years of age) that line is blurred by a practice that used to be "the norm" in most nations prior to the 20th century.
We all hate pedophilia but this sexual schism has only existed for the last 100 years or so in humans million year history.
Young Adults are gonna "young adult"!!!
Easy Come Easy Go...My fav song by them
Headed for a Heartbreak
Can't Get Enough
Hungry
This song/video was one of the most popular/requested on MTV back in the day!! This song still KILLS IT!! And there was ZERO controversy when it came out!! U gotta a realize when Hair Metal was at its peak the lyrical themes to all songs were: girls, partying, getting laid and picking up prostitutes. PERIOD.
Hey this stuff has been going on before the 80's. I was only 17 in 1985 no pun intended.🤣 Check out KISS..... Christine Sixteen. Listen to these lyrics from KISS. Billy Idol..... Rock the Cradle of Love. Love your reactions T.
Unfair! I grew up listening to Kiss and I always interpreted the lyrics to Christine Sixteen as them reminiscing about a girl named Christine who was 16 back in the day when they were 16 too and went to the same high school as her. I never once imagined that they were grown men lusting after a 16 year old girl named Christine.
I’m 36 and I still reminisce about a girl named Heather who went to my high school when she and I were 16.
@@krypticcoil9540 go back and listen to the lyrics. I didn't think anything about it when I listened to it as a kid and teen.
@@dwaynek.1293 ok so I took your advice and read the lyrics with my adult eyes and unfortunately I have to admit that you’re right. Those are some incriminatingly creepy lyrics. However, I will also remain mindful of the time when the song was written and released. It was a different time with different rules. Nevertheless, I’m heart broken now!
@@krypticcoil9540 I'm sorry.
@@dwaynek.1293 don’t be. It is what it is. All that you did was encourage me to look at it again with an open mind to the truth.
They didn't suck. They got played because of the one song. The band has incredible talent and this song too is fn good.
I was in Germany while in the Army from 87 - 89. They didn’t have a lot of music compared to other bands but we enjoyed the hell out of them. I always liked this tune. Also around this time the Bullet Boys came out with Smooth Up In You. Music was changing and the hair bands were on the way out when the 90’s hit. It will always be my favorite music though!
Kip winger is gorgeous and massively talented. That is why ugly rockers hate him.
This album has 5 bangers. Hungry, Madelaine, surrender. 3 bangers! And a great vallad
Lol
Absolutely love Winger. Try Nelson next
I know! I know! Ahh, young love😅
Hey TNT you should react to TNT (band from Norway), the song Eddie perhaps.
LMAO!!!! You know this is going on your playlist. Don't lie....
Lol
Lol this came out in 1988 and I graduated in 1987. Was seeing a girl who was 17(I was 18 about to be 19) when this song came on and allllll her friends use to turn it up. 🤣
A throwback to the younger days.
"What were y'all doing in the 80s?"
Cocaine. It's a hell of a drug.
Madeline is a great one . check it out. also something cool. find their appearance on the Arsenio Hall show , the live performance of Headed for a Heartbreak is unbelievable .
i was 20yrs old when this come out lol....now that i am 52 i feel wrong listening to this song!!! 😂😂
Lol
Just saw them live last night. Great show. Got to meet their rhythm guitarist/keyboard player, Paul Taylor. Kip can still sing, especially this song.
When this came out I was only 18 so there was no backlash from most of the intended audience. My girlfriend at the time had just turned 17 so this was a great song for us lol
I was 20 and dating a 16 year old, with full parental consent back in 88 when this song came out. By contrast, in late 85 I was 17 and dating a 26 year old. Things were a little different back then. Girls always went for guys who were a few years older than they were. It was actually more the norm than the exception. My dad was 41 and my mom was 27 when i was born, it seems that girls went for the older guys for the maturity level and potential stability that it offered, rather than a guy their own age. Winger was/is actually a really good band, very talented group of guys who could wail on their respective instruments.
They got lumped into the "Pretty Boy/Hair Metal" category, but they were quite a few notches above that talent-wise.
I love your enthusiasm so I'm subscribing to your channel
Reb Beach is underrated
They are legit screaming that s*#t from the rooftops!!
i loved your reaction to this song! hahahaha god i love winger! ^_^ thanks for this reaction video, insta subscribed!
Freedom of Expression especially in the Arts is OK. Just like comedian Chapel. There was No backlash at all. It was played on MTV metal show all the time. It was a minority that bitched about it. However, most people knew that musicians push the boundaries just like comedians (Eddie Murphy, Richard Prior) and it is ALL just for entertainment. As it should be today.
Can't Get Enough, Miles Away, Headed for a Heartbreak, Easy Comr Easy Go, Down Incognito, Without the Night, Rainbow in the Rose, Proud Desperado, are all great hits.
Yes definetely
They didn’t suck. I saw them twice and they kicked ass
I have always liked Winger and I still do
Don't worry she's about 71 now
Math much?
I was probably 15 or 16 when the song came out. 17 was well within the realm of acceptability in my world; It really meant nothing to me. Now, I have a kid who’s almost 17… the song takes on a different meaning.
If that trip you out you should hear kiss Christine 16 and I seen winger through the '80s open for a bunch of bands some of the best musicians of the '80s never had a bad show and I'm a thrash harder side extreme metal person
Back then this was never frowned upon.
