@@WilliamT1964 The song contains several samples. The drum break is from "Get Off Your Ass and Jam" by Funkadelic, and the main guitar riff is from "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner. Other samples are taken from "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones (when this song is mentioned in the lyrics), "Christine Sixteen" by Kiss, "All Right Now" by Free and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive

There are so many of these songs, and we never thought anything about them. "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" by Sonny Boy Williamson, but it's been covered by everyone. "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" by Neil Sedaka, "You're Sixteen, You're Beautiful (and You're MIne)" by Johnny Burnett. Aerosmith, Motorhead and Ted Nugent all have different songs titled "Jailbait," but Ted's is probably the most graphic.

It really was a different world back then (1977). If you go back further, 14 and 15 year olds got married on a regular basis in the 1800's, and that still happened somewhat in the early 20th Century. Kids grew up a lot faster back then. This song was a Top 20 hit. No one made a big deal about it at the time. As an adult, people listen back and think, "Damn, that's creepy," but in 1977? It was no big deal. That sure seems crazy now! Gene jokes on stage sometimes when they play this song now that he should rename it, "Christine 60." The truth is, this song probably only came about because of the rhyme. Gene likes to write songs around a title or idea. In this case, it was the title. It was catchy and memorable. We also got to ride bikes without helmets and ride in the back of open pickup trucks. Both of those things were fun, but really bad ideas. Safety didn't come first back then. And, for better or worse, a lot of people looked at 16 year olds as adults in a lot of ways. (Mostly for worse, although kids were expected to take on more responsibility then than they are at the same age now...)

I got a kick out of your reaction, T. I've been listening to this song and the Winger song since I was a kid and thought nothing of it. Back then it was just as taboo and illegal for grown men to mess around with underage girls as it is today but I don't think anyone paid as much attention to it back then. It was frowned upon of course, but I think people were more willing to look the other way. Gene Simmons is adamant in his autobiography that he never slept with underage girls while on tour and I believe him. If you want an example from the 60s, check out "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" by the Grateful Dead. Also, "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by the Police (from the early 80s) is another variation on the same theme.

The thing you need to think about is these bands know the core audience they are writing for, which was mostly teenagers. So as a teenager, you relate the song to yourself and your situations and not necessarily from the viewpoint of the band, so it didn't seem creepy at the time. At least that's the way everyone I know views it.

I'm 55 now and am just discovering lyrics now of songs I listened to all those years ago As someone said Goin Blind by KISS is another I just discovered. Heck my mom's sister got married at thirteen to a 21 or 22 year old with parents written permission. Musician Jerry Lee Lewis married his cousin that was 13 or 14 too back in the 50s or 60s. It was a different time. Have you reacted to Cold Ethel by Alice Cooper. I can't remember. Love your channel 😊

BTW Tone Loc sampled "Christine sixteen" by KISS in "Funky Cold Medina".
Not justifying it but there were a BUNCH of songs out in the 70s & 80s had questionable lyrics, like ted nugent "cat scratch fever" , "Come on Eileen" by Dexys midnight runners", & Benny Mardones "into the night" + many more! Most of them are played on the radio still.

I was a child of the 70's and this song was popular on AM radio at the time, and no one gave it a second thought.
In fact, I remember in junior high school singing it with my friends including girls.
Your members are right when they tell you it was a different time and mentality than it is today and I'm glad I grew up then before the distractions of cell phones and social media.
Interestingly, even though sexual innuendo songs like this were popular I do not recall the high number of sexual assaults we have today.

It is what it is, from another time, pointless looking back at it, and judging it, through today’s perspective. There’s no end to such ‘discoveries’ in all media from past eras. Decades from now people are gonna be wondering what Nicki Minaj is going on about with her “truffle butter” too.

I was in a band and regularly had girls that weren't old enough to drink ( that was 18 at that time ) throwing themselves at me and my band mates. 16 is the legal age of consent in most states. The old saying was "15 will get you 20". Maybe you are thinking that girls that young don't actively seek "relations"... you are wrong. I am not saying I condone it... I sure didn't when my girls were that age. But Kiss always knew their audience. I had a girlfriend that really loved this song. Guess what her name was? She was 26 at the time and she said she had liked that song ever since she heard it. I was kind of meh about the song when it came out. I was 14 years old. Kiss was my favorite band growing up. A friend and I listen to the album ( Love Gun ) that it came off of the day it was released. It shipped platinum... one the first records to ever do that. Go watch some of the old videos on KIss in the 70s... there were alot of girls in those crowds that were that young for sure.

In some States, if the juvenile is 16 or older, AND the partner is within 4 years, the juvenile may legally enter into a relationship. So, if he was 20 or younger when he wrote the song, it would have been legal. Now, it may not keep daddy from shoving that bass up his _$$ sideways. But then, sometimes a song…. Is just a song. Another BIG hit was titled “Young Girl”, by Gary Puckett. Considered a pedo song. It is still readily available on UA-cam.

Well you got to remember Jerry Lee Lewis the killer legendary man married his 13 year old cousin when he was 23.
The winger song yeah it's those great ones there where it's like yeah you just so you know I'm way underage Christine 16 is like 10 years prior to the winger.
    Classic songs of jail bait

If Christine was 16 when Gene wrote this she'd be 61 now.

She is a groupie "she's been around but she's young and clean". Stuff happens, backstage, no doubt.
Seventeen is an incredible song, at least he introduced himself to the girls father. Not just hit it quit it, he has feelings for the girl.

The song Domino has a great beat but also makes it clear that she is young “she ain’t old enough to vote”. But it’s a good listen.

Skin, Was a lot thicker in those days. People didn't dwell to much on a minor and an adult conversing or consorting. It was a right of passage for a Father, Uncle, Grandfather, etc. to take a Teen Boy somewhere that he can learn the "Ropes" from a mature female professional. It was something we snickered about, "and don't tell your Mother!"
Now since you broached the Subject T, Lets go into "Candy's Gone Bad" GODZ.
    Next hit "The Sixteens" SWEET.

songs that featured a person's age on a song title or lyrics are often scrutinized nowadays because people don't realize that the songwriting is mostly based on the perspective on the younger person. songs that have lyrics from a young teenage crush on an older teenager were common back in the 60's 70's and 89's. because the song were writen and sung by someone over the age 18 or older. it tend to mislead people thinking that a singer is a predictor.

Have you ever seen any of their unplugged videos? If not, you should, because you can see another side of Kiss, without all the makeup and costumes. You may like this one, "Kiss-I Still Love You (MTV Unplugged with video)".

This song is from 1977. The best version is on the Album Alive 2. There is no piano.

The Rolling Stones have this beat in the 60s. Stray Cat Blues has a guy going after a 14 year old and asks her to bring her mother.

Your reaction is hilarious! Lol. Yeah, not great lyrics for today’s environment. But it’s catchy as hell! If you listen, you’ll notice this song is sampled in Ton Loc’s FunkyCold Medina. You should check out the ultimate KISS rocker…I’ve Had Enough!
