On May 12, 1981, Rush played the Rochester War Memorial and I had no one to take me. I'm not going to say I was heartbroken, but to this day I'm sad that I wasn't able to see that particular tour. Welcome to the rabbit hole of Lee, Lifeson, and Peart. Possibly the most accomplished rock trio of our time, and who will likely inspire the next highly capable musicians.
Exactly. They figure out ways to get the same sound live. It’s not a stripped down version. And if you like Geddy’s bass, listen during the solo section of freewill. Amazing.
Well now you actually have to watch "Neil Peart's drum solo in Frankfurt", Dont go to sleep, dont go to work , do not Pass Go and collect $200. Listen now, aaaand begin...🎵🎵
This is a definite must. I also just watched a doc on DW drums and his last set was made from a 1500 yr old log at the bottom of a Romanian river. Amazing.
I started watching these Rush reactions for that solo. Have binged dozens this weekend and saw new things myself. 1. At one point after the firat zylophone section he is playing a constant back rhythm with his right hand. Including a zylo hit. While drumming different singles with his left. 2. A bit later he starts a top hat aymbol double tap with his left foot. It continues like a metronomic background. Insane, he is using all four limbs with differing paterns.
Nowhere. I've seen this "quote" used a hundred times on UA-cam and the musicians are always different. Besides Eddie Van Halen is too much of a dick to compliment anyone else.
I’ve never heard this before but I heard the same exact quote attributed to Jimi Hendrix when he was asked on the Mike Douglass show how it feels to be the worlds greatest guitarist. His answer was “I don’t know, ask Rory Gallagher”. I think people have taken liberties over the years with that quote. Not saying you didn’t hear it, just saying whoever wrote it was plagiarizing.

So TNT, I just want to say that music can bring us together! I am an old fat white guy that pretends that he can drum and have a pic of Neal Peart behind my drumset. And I love to see a young black man like yourself learning of a great 80s band and the best drummer in my opinion that an old fat white guy like me grew up on. Just like years ago when I first heard the guitar and vocals of a George Benson or the sultry songs/vocals of Marvin Gaye and Barry White. We all can get along through music! Thanks TNT!
Rush sounds like three, four, five, maybe even six soloists all coming together to form one incredible sound. The live version of Xanadu from "Exit: Stage Left" is a perfect example of this.
Rush is known for its musicianship, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy. The band's musical style has changed several times over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, and including a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers. In the early 1990s, Rush returned to a guitar-driven hard rock sound, which continued for the rest of their career. Rush announced plans to cease large-scale touring at the end of 2015, following the conclusion of their R40 Live Tour. After nearly three years of an uncertain future, Lifeson reluctantly announced in January 2018 that the band would not continue.[8][9] On January 7, 2020, Peart died of brain cancer at the age of 67
You’ve gone headlong in to a very deep rabbit hole.. I guarantee that you will never regret this journey..La Villa Strangiatto is a good next step, or Xanadu! I’m looking forward to your reactions to 2112 and Hemispheres, but not quite yet...
Welcome to the wonderful world of Rush! I haven't read the comments but I'm sure everyone has already mentioned how amazing all 3 musicians are. Keep in mind that all this music is made by only 3 guys, and they totally replicate to perfection live. T, I'm telling you, man... you have to check out the live version of Xanadu from their 1980-81 concert film Exit: Stage Left. It will change your life, my friend.
Rush is a progressive rock band noted for their ability to seemlessly move through different time changes. They are fantastic live. Not only do they play exceptionally well, they bring a great sense of humor to their act. The bass player is Geddy Lee. He also sings and plays the keyboard. Peart writes all the lyrics, which are well worth paying attention to. And, to top it off, they are three of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.
The shows were amazing in person. What stood out to me on their last tour was how everyone in the audience was singing and air playing to even the obscure songs. I’d never been in a place where I felt like everyone loved each other deep down like that.
Peart is a beast and will always be one of my favorite musicians. He is also "your favorite drummers, favorite drummer" However, Geddy Lee is a frickin BEAST! Sings, plays bass, keyboards and Taurus pedals. Check out Xanadu live from Exit Stage Left. I've been very fortunate to have seen them countless times, and they have never disappointed. One of those bands that's ever better live. ✌
My favorite Rush song is "Subdivisions" ..... 2112 is also brilliant as expected heads up that puppy is about 20min though. Its like 3 songs that flow together to make a story good rabbit hole definitely want lyrics though so you can understand the story
Oh my gosh someone else finally suggested Subdivisions. Seems to be such an underrated song, but I LOVE it too. Maybe not my fave song, but definitely top three.
It was a truly great crossroads between styles and right at the advent of sample culture and you had disco starting to fuse all sorts of sounds together. Very early EDM was forming as well as punk. Flowing from the 70s into the 80s was absolute magical musically.
I think you’ve never heard of them because 1. They are Canadian and Canadian Bands don’t play a lot on Americans radio and 2. They’ve always been very underrated by the mainstream, like Geddy Lee said, “Rush is like everybody’s best secret”.
@@stinkystu1 Back in the seventies they got very little to no radio air play in spite of having produced absolute masterpieces like 2112, Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings... it wasn't until Permanent Waves in 1980 that they started to go more mainstream. I should know, I was a Rush head living in suburbia throughout the '70s, back when Led Zep, the Stones and other dinosaur bands were all the shit, and most people crapped on them - there were only like 10 people in my high school who digged them. I tried turning a lot of people on to them but got shot down most of the time, either they didn't like Geddy Lee's voice or they simply didn't get all the technicality, progginess and time signature changes.
"He's playing the drums like a computer ...." No, the computer is playing the drums like Neal Peart, and it's depressed because it's not as good as he is.
I'm Brazilian and I saw this guy's here in Brazil. The first disco was I buy is hemisphers. I was 16 years old. Today im 56 and still listen Rush every day. My daughter love too. Welcome to the Rush Club!
Off at a huge tangent, but my god you should be doing voice over work, you’ve got such a great voice! Plus, gotta love anyone who is diving into Rush, they’re with you for your life.
Imagine having a band of three musicians. Each is considered among the best ever at their specific instrument. The drummer also happens to write incredible lyrics. Oh, did I mention the bassist is a world-class singer and a solid keyboardist? It's almost not fair.
I’ve been sayin it for 40 years....and you just said it “People need to hear this”. Seen them in the 80s, 90s and took my oldest boy in 2011. Your absolutely right, they are the real deal, they never EVER sounded like a 3 piece live, and ALWAYS stayed true to themselves. Great review, your reactions reminded me the first time I experienced the holy triumvirate .
I was lucky enough to have seen them live. They were one of the greatest live bands as well as wizards in the studio. I never get tired of seeing people discover Rush and be blown away by the versatility and virtuosity of the band. They were each absolute masters of their instruments, but were also respectful of each other on a personal level and a musical level. Nobody steps on anyone's toes, everyone has time to shine and show their stuff and best of all, they could lock into a groove while playing that would be the envy of the greatest funk bands on Earth.
You HAVE to listen to “La Villa Strangiato” I think It’s Rush’s best song, everything on this track is insanely good, the bass, The Drum (One of the best piece of drumming I’ve ever heard) and the guitar is absolutely insane, especially the solo (by Alex Lifeson one of the most underrated guitarist of all time) and It’s a 10 minutes instrumental!
The Adventures of TNT make sure it’s the official video version. They are playing the song live and it’s incredible. You need to see the boys playing live.
You need to read Neil's life story....such a tragic tragic set of events but he overcame those events and came back large and in charge. Thanks, Professor!! I grieve for your family here, but I rejoice that you are reunited with your wife and daughter. When we meet, we will shake the pillars of heaven and find time to take a motorcycle trip!!!
I saw them in 94 in Detroit. 20 years into their journey and they sounded impeccable. Watch Neil's solo recorded in Rio. A-mazing. I got to witness that in person. I feel incredibly fortunate to have seen them in concert.
You are correct that these guys put on incredible performances. I was fortunate enough to see them 3 times over the years, and to this day they are still the best band I have ever seen live.
Natural Science, live, snakes and arrows tour, one of Neil pearts greatest drumming performances, (my favourite,) and there's a drum camera video of the same performance. very difficult song, loads of transitions, I still can't understand why people don't request Natural science, it's a great live performance, great bass playing by geddy Lee.
I was an angsty 15yo growing up in the suburban jungle in 1983, when Subdivisions came out. It was the first time I had a connection to a song. Like Neil somehow knew my daily struggle. It kept me sane.
2112 changed my life 40 yrs ago and I still hold that song near and dear to my heart. My 10 yr old loves the song as I did and still do to this day. Rush is brilliant! musicianship=)
3 guys who were masters of their instruments. And their songs had such a diversity of sound. from the 70's rock to the 80's synthesizers, they could do it all.
Huge Rush fan here... can you believe that there are people out there that absolutely HATE Rush? I can't even comprehend what they are thinking. Glad that you are experiencing them with open ears. Good news for you: you've BARELY scratched the surface!
I worked with a guy who was an English teacher in grade 9 and this guy shit on Rush every chance he got. I can't comprehend why I hear what I hear and people don't like their music. They have a great vibe and intelligent lyrics
Apparently having a Y chromosome helps one to appreciate Rush (with the notable exception of the ladies in the front row of the Time Machine concert in Cleveland. Those women are to be treasured!).
"Why have I never heard of these guys?" In large part because they don't write love songs. That's almost a carved in stone prerequisite for 70s and 80s rock bands. These guys were nerds in an era where nerd culture was very much mocked. If you read sci fi and fantasy, if you were a fan of Star Trek and Star Wars, if you played Dungeons and Dragons you were a weirdo. Enter a band that wrote songs about the Knight of the Underworld fighting the great white Snow Dog, about the elven city of Rivendell, about the quest to defeat the evil wizard Necromancer. Their great "F you" to the record label was a sci fi epic about the individual's battle against the institutions in a dystopian future that was very Blade Runneresque before there was Blade Runner. They wrote about flying a space ship into a black hole, and a mystical cave where one might achieve immortality. Later they wrote songs about the launch of the first Space Shuttle, the development of the atom bomb, or a car chase through the countryside in a world where cars are illegal. Songs weren't packaged neatly in 4 minute boxes. And all of that is perfectly OK, because those of us that grew up loving them didn't care that they weren't on heavy rotation on the radio. They were on heavy rotation on our turntable and in our tape decks and CD and mp3 players. Welcome to Wonderland, T. I hope you enjoy your stay here through the looking glass at the bottom of this very deep rabbit hole.
So, all us Rush freaks are nerds. I get it ... I think. I liked Rush, saw many a live concert, and they made me feel less of a freak than what I was. They, and others, pulled me from the abyss of economic hardship and made me feel like I was worth something. I think they succeeded on an artistic level, eh?
@@brianmartindale2221 I don't know that ALL Rush fans were or are nerds, but you had to at least have tolerance for nerdy ideas and social misfits to be able to appreciate their lyrics. Songs like "Working Man", "Fly By Night", "Freewill" and "Spirit of the Radio" kept them on the radio, but I believe it was By Tor and Rivendell and the Necromancer that built the base and 2112 that set it in stone.
It’s guys like you that are going to keep this music alive! These artists are at the age they are dying. There will never be another era of music like this ever! Between the years of 1955 to maybe late 90’s. All of us classic rockers that grew up our whole lives with this music are fading away.
The bass player, singer, Geddy Lee, also plays keys and a pedal board while live as well !! The concentration of talent in these three guys is phenomenal!! 👍👍❤️
I was fortunate enough to see RUSH on their “Moving Pictures” tour; I slept outside, in-line, out front of the ticket venue, for 2 nights to secure my tickets...totally worth it.
I grew up in Burlington ON, just down the road from Toronto. I remember when RUSH was doing the high school /college circuit in the seventies. When they got a little bigger, for a few years, every New Year's eve at the Gardens!!
Saw them live at the Montreal forum and Bell Center. I was completely blown away with them. All the sound that came out from only 3 guys was simply unbelievable.
Rush's "trick" is taking quite unusual musical ideas (odd time signatures, solos in modes etc), deep lyrics and exhibition level musicianship and turning it into completely accessible melodic songs with a groove, rather than some avant garde nonsense :-)
"This band isn't hard rock, it sounds like it's progressive rock, before there was progressive rock" You nailed it ! Rush was the inspiration of many other bands, such as Dream Theater. (The guitarist John Petrucci was a total fan of Rush, his favorite album being "Hemispheres"... and Mike Portnoy favorite drummer was Neil Peart.) It was through Mike's Twitter announcement that I heard that "my favorite drummer's favorite drummer" had passed away.
I'm from Toronto Ontario Canada and Rush grew up and played at my high school in 1971 I believe and they are the most pure band dedicated to music in it's purest form. They never sold out and built their fan base on the pure love of their music. They are a Canadian treasure.
As Someone from the band’s hometown who’s seen them live 14 times the World is lesser without them. Thank you for respecting them, you’ve earned a subscriber.
Rush is the staple of my high school antics. Add BOC and Sabbath. Their concerts were amazing. Maybe start at Working Man (pre Peart) ByTor and Snowdog, then 2112
I love watching someone with a musical intellect experience RUSH for the first time and see the appreciation for their talent for the first time. You should listen to the 2112 album to get a new appreciation for them.It is a story put to rock music and you will enjoy it.
Too bad you never got to see Rush in concert . The only band I have ever seen that actually played better live than in the studio . I saw them 17 times from 1986 - 2016 . They spoiled me for other bands that would make mistakes live . RIP Professor . Your legacy is alive and well .
The album called Hemispheres is just incredible. Few people react to because it has a lot of long songs - its a concept album. But honestly, its really really good.
Your one of only people appreciating the pure music ability of each member rather than concentrating too much on the actual words. Im from old school rock so been listening to this since late 70s. Im 54 now. Enjoy your exploration of ALL classic rock. There is tons and tons beyond Rush.

Welcome to the Rush Rabbit Hole! You're life will be forever changed! So much greatness from a 3 piece band. Geddy Lee on bass, lead singer, keyboards; Alex Lifeson (underrated) on guitar; Neil P👂t (you are correct), drums & lyricist. One of the best drummers ever. They are all funny and liked each other very much. Probably why they stayed together for so long. Alex was the biggest jokester, then Geddy. Neil was the bookworm. He was always reading...hence the lyricist! Rush was one of the best part of my life growing up. So much great music in the 60s & 70s!! Luckily it will live forever! On May 12, 1981, Rush played the Rochester War Memorial and I had no one to take me. I'm not going to say I was heartbroken, but to this day I'm sad that I wasn't able to see that particular tour. Every subsequent time they played in Rochester from 1984 until 1991 or so, I was there. Last time I saw them, it was at Madison Square Garden (2011) and I went to the show straight from work. Jacket and tie and all. I was still that kid from all those years ago. I have seen Rush live more than any other band, and I miss those guys.
Welcome to the rabbit hole of Lee, Lifeson, and Peart. Possibly the most accomplished rock trio of our time, and who will likely inspire the next highly capable musicians.
“La Villa Strangiato” is another good one from Rush.
The best song they made
Most incredible song.
Rush has been my band since 1976... There was no band like them then, and no band like them now. Enjoy!!
Lucky dog. I didn't start until 1986 but made damn sure to see them at least once every single tour since them.
Dave Matthews Band has a different vocabulary but a similar uniqueness
The bass player is the singer voted best bass player ever. Also plays keyboards and can play guitar......band is incredible display of talent.
Lets not forget that he plays the keyboard with his feet live, while playing bass, and singing, and mentally updating his grocery list!!!
WHAT!!???

Exactly. They figure out ways to get the same sound live. It’s not a stripped down version. And if you like Geddy’s bass, listen during the solo section of freewill. Amazing.
Funnily enough though, Geddy rated John Entwistle the greatest bass player.
Well now you actually have to watch "Neil Peart's drum solo in Frankfurt", Dont go to sleep, dont go to work , do not Pass Go and collect $200. Listen now, aaaand begin...🎵🎵
Lol
Agreed
This is a definite must. I also just watched a doc on DW drums and his last set was made from a 1500 yr old log at the bottom of a Romanian river. Amazing.
Agreed
I started watching these Rush reactions for that solo. Have binged dozens this weekend and saw new things myself.
1. At one point after the firat zylophone section he is playing a constant back rhythm with his right hand. Including a zylo hit. While drumming different singles with his left.
2. A bit later he starts a top hat aymbol double tap with his left foot. It continues like a metronomic background. Insane, he is using all four limbs with differing paterns.
Rush: "We wanted to write a song that was impossible to play". The result was YYZ. True story.
"Progressive rock before it was even progressive rock"
Wow, he got it right away!
"What's it feel like to be the greatest guitar player in the world?" Eddie Van Halen's reply: "I don't know, maybe you should ask Alex Lifeson.".
Where did you read , hear or see this quote I would love to see it for myself??
Barry Bailey he said it in a Rolling Stone interview sometime in the early 80s. You might be able to track it down online
Wait, I thought that it was a comment made by Hendrix towards Phil Keaggy...or was it Eddie who made it about Hendrix. Either way, great folklore.
Rush's live performance of "Xanadu" from Exit Stage Left will answer all of your questions and will further leave you in awe.
Excellent comment...spot on
Exactly!!
My favorite live track by any band ever. (“Supper’s Ready” on Genesis’ Three Sides Live is also a keeper.)
T... Do yourself a favor and watch the documentary on Rush called "Beyond the Lighted Stage"... It's on Netflix. You will be hooked on this band for the rest of your life. No Joke.
I've been hooked most of my life.. I was 12 or 13 when i first heard them, I'm 54 now! .. Hitct hiked 200 miles to see them live, when i was 16 .. So worth it! ... Musical genius that will forever be remembered & be praised, in the history of music!
And read Neil’s book ‘Ghost Rider’
@@50blvd As far as i know, T has not watched the movie, cause if he did, he certainly would have revealed the mastery and dedication of the gentlemen that made this documentary, Sam Dunn & Scott McFayden...
That was an incredible documentary. Loved how they stayed true to themselves throughout their career.

"I don't even know what to say". That's Rush. Thank you. I enjoy seeing others discovering Rush. They are the pinnacle, IMO.
Best audio quality of all Rush reaction videos. Thank you, I just sent my little bro this video and told him, "put on your headphones and remove all breakable items from arms reach". Another generation awakens to RUSH! 🔥
Thanks TNT!
Thank you I'm right there with you and I don't have the words you said it right on
Rush sounds like three, four, five, maybe even six soloists all coming together to form one incredible sound.
After nearly three years of an uncertain future, Lifeson reluctantly announced in January 2018 that the band would not continue.[8][9] On January 7, 2020, Peart died of brain cancer at the age of 67
By the way YYZ is the airport zoning code for Toronto where they're from and the intro riff on the guitar is morse code for YYZ
Neil is gone but his legacy lives on. I’m glad you discovered this amazing band.
You’ve gone headlong in to a very deep rabbit hole.. I guarantee that you will never regret this journey..La Villa Strangiatto is a good next step, or Xanadu! I’m looking forward to your reactions to 2112 and Hemispheres, but not quite yet...
"The Camera's Eye", "Red Barchetta", and "Witch Hunt" are all epic jams.
Yep, love that one . . . that one too . . . and that one is awesome . . .
No doubt 👌
Excellent choices!
They made "Progressive" music palatable.
Neil wrote most of their lyrics but was not responsible for all. Geddy and Alex both contributed throughout the years
@@danhuston6973 one might say the only progressive band that finished the progress
If course they were nice, they are Canadians.
Yyyeesss!! I vote for Subdivisions, too!! That song always gets to me, both lyrically and instrumentally. So good!!!! 😌
That's prog for you... rock, jazz, classical, everything fused.
60s, 70s and 80s music will be listened to and studied for centuries. Never to be duplicated, and we lived it. How awesome is that?
It was a truly great crossroads between styles and right at the advent of sample culture and you had disco starting to fuse all sorts of sounds together. Very early EDM was forming as well as punk. Flowing from the 70s into the 80s was absolute magical musically.
I cant tell you how much fun it is to watch you discover THE band I've been diggin since I was a teenager. There is much, much more to come.....
I think you’ve never heard of them because 1. They are Canadian and Canadian Bands don’t play a lot on Americans radio and 2. They’ve always been very underrated by the mainstream, like Geddy Lee said, “Rush is like everybody’s best secret”.
Lol hahahahaha hahahahaha
I feel this way as well. I’m like “holy shit! This band is amazing. Should I even tell other people about them, “lol
What a crock. Rush was all over the radio in the USA in their heyday. The problem was that they became popular right before rock died.
Best band of all time. End of story. Been a devoted fan for 13 years (I’m 22)
You are absolutely correct
Just listened to this with decent headphones for my first time. Until 5 minutes ago I thought my car stereo sounded fine. Man, was I ever wrong.
"He's playing the drums like a computer ...."
No, the computer is playing the drums like Neal Peart, and it's depressed because it's not as good as he is.
Ehehehe 😅

Hilarious!
A drummer uses a metronome. A metronome uses Neil Peart.
Well said! Bravo
I'm Brazilian and I saw this guy's here in Brazil. The first disco was I buy is hemisphers. I was 16 years old. Today im 56 and still listen Rush every day. My daughter love too. Welcome to the Rush Club!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Plus, anything from that show is awesome. And, actually, anything live from Rush is excellent.
A must. Agree
I agree.
Off at a huge tangent, but my god you should be doing voice over work, you’ve got such a great voice! Plus, gotta love anyone who is diving into Rush, they’re with you for your life.
Ditto. If mahogany were a voice...warmth, depth and resonance...
Imagine having a band of three musicians. Each is considered among the best ever at their specific instrument. The drummer also happens to write incredible lyrics. Oh, did I mention the bassist is a world-class singer and a solid keyboardist? It's almost not fair.
Damn str8, nailed it
Like the gunfighters from the old west- looking to beat the best. Rock bands tried to beat Rush, but were all shot down.
I’m down
The Adventures of TNT make sure it’s the official video version.

It's fun watching you having fun discovering a band that I've been listening to since 1975.
Also, Neil wrote most of the songs. Have lyrics when listening. Always a message.
I should’ve pulled up the lyrics but I literally got lost in the music on these tracks.
Nicole Vance he wrote the words not .music
Geddy and Alex wrote the music, mostly. Neil wrote the lyrics, mostly.
"subdivisions" and i think the name of the other tune is "the natural science"
Natural Science, live, snakes and arrows tour, one of Neil pearts greatest drumming performances, (my favourite,) and there's a drum camera video of the same performance. very difficult song, loads of transitions, I still can't understand why people don't request Natural science, it's a great live performance, great bass playing by geddy Lee.
@@philipshort7491 did they also do it on the rush in rio dvd i believe its on the discs i bought years ago from that show
Natural Science is one of my FAVORITES from them........3 guys make that music....it's amazing.
"Subdivisions" totally jams.
They are probably the best three piece band you will ever hear
Lest we forget Emerson Lake and Palmer...check out Brain Salad Surgery.
Nailed it. I hadn't ever thought of it this way but I am such a such a nerd. And Rush is definitely music by nerds for nerds. Well said sir
So, all us Rush freaks are nerds. I get it ... I think. I liked Rush, saw many a live concert, and they made me feel less of a freak than what I was. They, and others, pulled me from the abyss of economic hardship and made me feel like I was worth something. I think they succeeded on an artistic level, eh?
i took a friend of mine too see Rush,......lol.... n he said too me i feel like i'm bein program
Subdivisions is like the perfect nerd and outcast anthem lol. I totally agree. Great comment
Watching your reaction was like looking into a mirror of 12yo me back in the late 70's. Love it!
Hard to believe someone has never heard this music crazy. I grew up with this. RIP Neil
I grew up in Burlington ON, just down the road from Toronto. I remember when RUSH was doing the high school /college circuit in the seventies. When they got a little bigger, for a few years, every New Year's eve at the Gardens!!
Admired for his talent, respected for his intellect, loved for his humanity.
RIP Professor.
"This band isn't hard rock, it sounds like it's progressive rock, before there was progressive rock"
You nailed it !
Dude. You rock. And you know an artist when you see him.
I'm from Toronto Ontario Canada and Rush grew up and played at my high school in 1971 I believe and they are the most pure band dedicated to music in it's purest form. They never sold out and built their fan base on the pure love of their music. They are a Canadian treasure.

The album called Hemispheres is just incredible. Few people react to because it has a lot of long songs - its a concept album. But honestly, its really really good.
I actually like Hemispheres more than 2112.
