YoungFolk Knits: Wool and Folk and Rhinebeck 2023 Haul | What Happened | What I Got

- Hello and welcome to Young folk Knits. In this video I Share about my experience at Wool and Folk and New York Sheep and Wool in Rhinebeck, as well as what I brought home!
*****I want to mention that I recorded this video before many of the vendors began sharing their experiences at the wool and folk event, and it was a much worse experience for them than I knew about. I am not trying to make light of their experiences in anyway. I often handle my own situations with humor and I am in no way laughing at the treatment they endured but instead with shock at the entire situation. Please be sure to check my instagram highlights for a list of wool and folk vendors in case you are able to support them. ********

I feel so bad for all the attendees and vendors at Wool & Folk. As an event planner who has handled events of 3,000+ attendees, I can't even believe how poorly this event was handled.
If there were an Oscars category for Best Rhinebeck Podcast, you'd definitely be walking away with the trophy. Thank you for taking us all along for the ride!
Given all the other sad/bad reviews about W&F… it seems to be drowning out the Rhinebeck event. So yes! Here here 🍷 to a wonderful review and happy talk. I’m also very happy that since it was your first show, you had a great time. ❤ (I’m not discounting all those who suffered damage or had bad experiences ❤)
I can't stop laughing at the shopping bag story 😂 It's actually very common, at least across Europe. Ireland banned single use plastic bags in 2002. It would never even dawn on me to walk in without a bag anymore. Wool and Folk sounds like it was an absolute disaster for all involved. The festival itself looked incredible though ❤
Yeah, I have me foldable bag in my handbag all the time now, lol
I live in New York & I believe the plastic bags have been banned for 4 or 5 years, I hope they never bring them back
Massachusetts, and most people carry reusable bags. Everyone who goes to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, definitely
@@jackieneale5424same. I'm in upstate and moved from Idaho. I was surprised when I found out, but you get used to it super quickly and I would never ever go back. I hope it stays this way forever.
Yeah, it’s not just that store. It’s a NY law. Though most places will sell (or often just…gift) you paper bags if you forget your reusable.
I got the shivers while listening to you retelling your experience at W & F. Organisers need to learn from past tragedies where people have lost their valuable lives from getting crushed in crowds. I felt so sad hearing this and feel so sorry for all attendees and vendors. The organisers should be held accountable for irresponsible planning endangering people’s lives. On a good note, I’m so glad to hear there was no tragedy at the event 🙏🙏🙏
I was so happy to get to meet you and even get a hug at Wool & Folk! AND, I was so sad to see you at Wool & Folk! You and Becky looked shell-shocked, as we all were with good reason! It was the total opposite of our experience at the Wool & Folk event last year. It seems pretty damn clear that the organizer took all the cash she could from every possible vendor and every possible attendee and didn't take anybody's safety or well-being seriously at all. I wonder if the relocation was actually a way to circumvent an engaged fire marshall to find a location without one. It was so incredibly unsafe! I had such a hard time getting out of the 1st floor of 1 building, I couldn't entertain going into the other building or go upstairs. It was undoubtedly a terrible fire risk and a trampling risk. The stories from vendors and attendees with disabilities are heartbreaking. I hope vendors are organizing to get their incredibly high fees reimbursed! It seems they could on grounds of fraudulent inducement. So, so sad! I will be shopping online to make up for what I couldn't buy there. Who can shop when they can't see yarn and anxiety has spiked through the roof from a genuine lack of safety? So, so glad to hear you had fun and got to shop the other events. Next year, I hope to see you at a different event at Rhinebeck, on a crisp, Fall, sunny day!
She also had “ sponsors” ($2500), who didn’t get recognition, nor information etc…
Yes I agree I do hope they seek compensation.
@@jackiesmith6091that was the one who spoke out about it, there was a second (who vended some of said sponsors yarn) who apparently paid more as well as fees for 2 large booths (at about $1800 total), they were given a cramped booth right next to rather smelly loos!
Wool & Folk sounds like my personal hell. I can feel the panic in my chest just listening to the stories. The fire hazard alone…
Your picture after Wool and Folk was so funny! Genuine LOL!
They beautiful teal yarn is an Outlander name! "Je Suis Prest" is Jamie's family motto and it means "I am ready." I hope your friend is an Outlander fan because she will fangirl over that!
Love their Outlander inspired yarn colors!!!
Hi Kaci, "Je suis prest" is the motto of clan Fraser and is probably an Outlander reference. It means "I am ready" in old French. It's also the title of an episode from the series. It's a beautiful color of yarn too!
Don't appologise for having a haul from a wool festival. If anyone is offended by it., they shouldn't be watching a video on attending a wool festival. It's impossible not to have bought anything unless they were caught in that crush mob that moved slowly past every booth without letting a person deviate from it, or someone took away their cash, debit cards, credit cards, and phone before they entered the festival. I'm pretty sure that is the reason we go to these festivals.
🌴☀️Okay just finished watching 🤭 first up…EVERY yarn lover should know more than likely this wasn’t going to be a wip/pattern/FO podcast🙄 and I loved loved loved your input on your first wool festival🎊
I felt like I was there with you, can’t believe the hubbies tagged along they are such awesome mates 🤗 thanks for supporting our podcast friends we appreciate you gentlemen💗
One thing I can say I’ll be looking forward to the future projects you do with that burnt orange sorta skein 🧶of yarn for the hat loving that color so much. And oh my GAWSH Andrea Mowrey I would have just fainted😂
I appreciate you, I love it here…a podcast that’s not only fabulous (duh🙄), but kind & a safe place to be subscribed too. AAAAND not to mention size inclusive which informs & guides me to patterns for women with curves hon’tey🤭
Love ya 💐in spirit and thanks for interrupting your experience to turn on the camera & share it with me☀️🌴
Kaci…I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this video. Watching you and Becky travel through the yarn shows was amazing. Seeing all the people we’ve been watching all year was so fun. You are such a delightful person, and I’m so happy I found your channel. I hope you’re feeling better. Take care..until next time…🤗❤️🙋Sue
Your smile fills a room ….. courthouse steps is quilt block on tote 😉
Lovely friendships in the fiber world 🌎
I was SO excited to see you at PUES I just ran up to you like I'd known you forever!! You're so sweet and it was such a pleasure to meet you in person.
Kaci! That liiiiine for Wool & Folk. No wonder you were already wide eyed and exhausted from the start. Also, love that big shawl you wore on the way up. 😍
Sending support, love, and kindness from Lexington, Michigan, USA
I loved hearing about your Rhinebeck trip! Please include me in the drawing for the Knitting for Olive book!
Oh Kaci you are such a beautiful woman! Don’t berate yourself for being windswept and soggy in all that rain ❤. I live in the UK and totally adore your videos and your amazing accent! Have an ambition to visit Rhinebeck one day (have been lucky enough to visit to NY and several other states a many times in my life) but shocking to hear about the Woolen Folk disaster for all the poor vendors! Really hope they make loads of sales online now the show is over. I love the USA so much, and you have some amazing talented yarn/fibre designers 😊. Loads of love to you and all your viewers, from Pip in the UK xxxx
yours, as well as becky's vlogs gave me a great view...i appreciate you both for the beautiful presentations...
What a chaotic event. It sounds dangerous. I am glad you survived! You made the best of it, too.
A great recap Kaci! It was so nice to see you and Becky enjoying your first Rhinebeck together! And your footage gives a great sense of all the events - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Fabulous to meet you in person, if only briefly! ❤
I so enjoyed hearing about your weekend & seeing the podcasters you met up with. I would love the 'Knitting with Olive book. Love your podcast.
I just can't believe what a horrific situation that was inside that building. Just last year in S Korea there was an event that happened on Halloween where basically there was a crowd in a small street that resulted in people literally being suffocated and crushed to death. 159 people died. Situations like the one you were in inside that building should not be taken lightly.
My heart breaks for the Wool & Folk vendors. I almost had a panic attack because of the insane crowd, but I toughed it out because I spent $70 CAD to get in. I heard someone fell and broke their arm at the dinner the previous night.
Rhinebeck was so amazing though! I met a friend for life and got to talk to so many people I admire! And it was such a pleasure to meet you!! You just radiate joy and though I know a lot of people were coming up to you, you still took the time to talk to me and take a photo!
Kaci I loved seeing all of your acquisitions thanks for sharing. Also, I was able to meet you and say hi on the Hill just before the group photo. Thank you for saying hi. ❤
I Volunteered at Indie Untangled and it was fun, well organized and a great time!!
I'm a huge Norah Gaughan as well! Her book Knitting Nature is one of my more-used knitting books! The Estes Park Wool Market is a festival that's about a 2-hour drive from me, and I went for nearly 10 years running around 2000. It was always fun, but before most social media, so we would know the favorite people near us 😉
I am so happy I got to meet you!!! I’m glad you had a great trip!
I love love seeing people's yarn hauls from fiber festivals
I love your cheerful demeanor even in describing the Wool and Folk disaster! I would have loved to meet you at NY Sheep and Wool but wasn’t destined to make it this year. And I too got a chuckle about your shopping bag story. Here in Connecticut and in NY where my son lives disposable plastic shopping bags have been outlawed for some years now. We are used to it now.
You are such a joy to spend time with. Your smile radiates so much that I never saw a “bad hair” picture ❤😊. Have a super week. XOXO
I am a recent subcriber to your channel and I can't tell you enough how much I enjoy watching it. Firt it is your voice - I love your accent. It is like listening to a bird singing the entire time. Wool and Folk seems like such a drag but you are making the best out of it without making out to be something else. What a disappointment! But you have such a positive attitude and I really enjoy hearing about. I am in NYC. So I should go Rhineback one of those days.
I am so sorry this was your first wool show. I've never been to one since I'm a beginner knitter/crocheter and I guess I don't feel ready for those expensive special yarns just yet. I got drawn into this from the ripple this disaster caused in the crafting community as a whole and of it was like the 2022 festival it seems amazing. I would have been so excited to go this year too. I love that feeling of careful planning, excitement and anticipation. To then have such a sad ending is so emotionally difficult. Maybe in a couple years I will see you at a wool show.
OMG, I. It must order that Maker’s Book! ❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing your trip to Rhinebeck. I thought you looked radiant in your photos. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Trips like this are incredibly tough on us autoimmune sisters. Much love to you Kaci!
I just loved meeting you in person at Wool and Folk! It was also my first fibre festival experience and while my friend and I were excited to be there, it was certainly not the experience we hoped for! Luckily Rhinebeck was awesome! I always enjoy watching and listening to you! ❤
I got to meet you in one of the buildings at Rhinebeck and I was starstruck! I love Knitting for Olive yarn and use it often.
The shopping bag story is so funny. As a New Yorker, I still forget to bring my reusable bags when I go shopping. It’s not just the grocery store, it’s all stores. It’s a fairly new thing and I am still not used to it.
Love your videos ❤❤❤❤
That SOD bag really is beautiful! I think your tote idea (to convert the tea towel) is genius. It will be useful AND a lovely souvenir of your trip.
I love your hair braids. I need to try that!
Kaciiii! It was so so so wonderful to see you in person! I wish we had more time to sit, relax and knit together
The bag you made for Kaci is soooo good!! ❤
It was so fun watching your recap! And I love seeing everything you got while you were there ☺️
Go with the red/rust not the brown for your Pressed Flowers. 🎉. Your enthusiasm is contagious, thanks for brightening my day while your trip was still fresh!
Great video❤
I went to wool & folk last year and I thought it was great. I wonder why they changed the venue. I know parking was tight last year however this year sounds like a total disaster. Rhinebeck proper is my favorite! Your bag story was funny! That law passed a few years back and I still forget my bags! Rhinebeck is definitely a who’s who in the knitting world. Lots of fan girl moments. You definitely need two days for the main show.
You looked beautiful. 😊
I love your chickens in the opening, so beautiful! I’m allergic to bees, but love to watch them, so important to the environment!
Want to introduce you to the Kentucky Wool festival in Falmouth Ky. I think it’s the first weekend of October. It was huge and were thousands there. This was my first wool fest too. This had a lot of the same type of vendors, sheep, sheepdogs and people to teach or watch all type of yarn crafts such as spinning. I don’t think you will meet a lot of utubers but the wool was amazing. Since you live in Arkansas it is definitely closer .
I was so happy that I got to meet you face to face! Thanks for the pin. You looked beautiful, rain and all!
Never wildly boring!
I got so much joy from watching this i even dragged my husband over to see how happy you are. Uplifting. :)
Great video. So nice to see everyone and all the knits!
You did not look bad in your pictures. What I saw was a lovely smile as you met people who meant something to you. Thank you for sharing your experience as someone who has never been it was a way for me to live vicariously!
For those of us who couldn’t go we are living vicariously thru you. So bring on the acquisitions!
I love seeing what everyone buys!!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience!!
Love the podcast - so good to meet you! Looks like you got some good stuff!!!!
Thank you for sharing all your goodies! What fun!
Hey Kaci, thank you so much for sharing your impressions of your yarny weekend adventure. What a trip! I loved the pictures and all the beautiful things you brought home with you. Hope you´ll recover quickly with a cup of tea, feet up and some relaxed knitting time. Greetings from germany!
It was so so lovely to have met you at Rhinebeck at the author’s building. You were so sweet and gracious and loved to spend a little time with you. One of my favorite Podcasts ❤
Oh how beautiful. All that wool, all those sweaters, all those sheep! Just love this. Thank you
I LOVE Bumblebee Acres yarn. The colors are always amazing. They are one of my go-tos.
You are GORGEOUS and enjoyed seeing all the pics from the fiber festivals!!
Thank you for sharing ! What an adventure. I’m so glad you went🎉🎉🎉
My dearest Kaci, thank you for the shout out. I was so thrilled to meet you!!! I loved this recap. I hope you come back next year. I pray that someone competent offers to organize another add on event. We need these events to provide new and up and coming dyers an opportunity to get their name and product out.
Loved you and Becky's outfits for each day! I really like the small quilted project bag.
Thanks for sharing the gorgeous notebook! Just ordered one! 🥰
Those quilted bags are gorgeous 😍 and I love love love your spinning fiber!!!!!
Looks like you had a fantastic time ❤
Thanks for letting us feel like we were there with you over the weekend! :) Also, hear me out... should we do a Pressed Flowers KAL?? I've been dying to make one too, we should make ours together!!
Loved hearing all about your trip! Isn’t Pick Up Every Stitch the best!!!!! Wool and Folk was not a pleasant experience BUT I did get to meet and talk to you and will treasure the pic we took together! Thanks.
What an adventure. I'm glad you had a good trip. I'm sorry for the hard stuff while you were there. Your airplane footage was so much fun. I always sit by the window just so I can see our gorgeous planet. I'm happy you got to go.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I love Rhinebeck and often go. It is a wonderful place to go in the autumn!
First off it was such a delight to meet you. Ordered one of those books. It looks fantastic. I tried using a bullet journal but I keep forgetting about it. I think this book will be great. Thanks for talking it. I bought a lot at Rhinebeck, Wool and Folk and Indie Untangled. I brought a big suitcase and put an air tag in it which was good because my suitcase stayed in Salt Lake City while I traveled on to Idaho Falls where I live. When I realized that I pulled out my phone and could see that it was at the Salt Lake City Airport. I could tell Delta where it was. It came on the next flight and was delivered to my house the next morning. Happily TSA had not been in the suitcase and all my yarn was intact. When I went to Shetland last year I Brought a foldable duffel bag to bring yarn home in. I I ended up putting my. clothes in the duffle bag and the yarn in my suitcase. It weighed so little that they never charged me for an extra bag. Paying for an extra bag is always cheaper than shipping. I always love seeing acquisitions. Rhinebeck on day 2 was less crowded. I’ve been to many festivals that were smaller. This was my first big one. You might want not a smaller festival next time. Once again lovely to see you and Becky.
Wow you got to meet Norah Gaughan. So cool. We did want to see what you bought, how it went, and all those other things to live vicariously since we did not go. What a memorable weekend. Wool & Fold sounds terrible. Glad people are sharing vendor list so we can shop there. Thanks for film on top of all the yarn fumes. Special thanks to the car driver and getter of Rhinebeck bags.
The vintage button booth was at the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Fest too. I actually spent more on buttons than wool!
Loved this video! So glad you enjoyed the sheep and wool festival. Everything you got is so beautiful and I can’t wait to see what you spin up with the fiber you showed. That red color will look stunning in a pressed flower cardigan. ❤
I love the quilted bags you bought! So lovely. ❤ Edited to add that it was so nice to meet you!
Great episode Kaci. You looked beautiful as ever at the rainy events. ❤
Oh my goodness, that you said your face was swollen--mine was Saturday morning and a day of taking selfies (ack!). You looked great (I did not...extra eye baggage followed by wet dog look from the rain 😂), It was my first time there (and my first fiber event!). That is so horrible about Wool and Folk; I didn't go because of the ticket price but I will be happy to spend that money on the vendors who got the shaft. Thank goodness the festival was amazing--I saw you there and didn't say hi (not sure why?).
Ok. That clementine bag is amazing. I would totally buy that bag. It is sooo beautiful! It reminds me of my favorite bikini I had as a kid! It was a 2 piece + a wrap skirt that was white with oranges and orange leaves super similar to that print. 🍊🍊🍊 Love it!
I have some reusable shopping bags that are super compressible and waterproof so that might be a good investment for other festivals because 1. Making sure your new yarn doesn't get wet/dirty because sometimes vendors run out of bags and 2. Grocery shopping, the no bag policies are not uncommon outside AR
Your intro is lovely!
Just finished your Rhinebeck episode. As always it was wonderful.
I have that notebook too and I LOVE IT❤
My heart went out to you when I saw that line, I couldn’t do that myself. Over the years these festivals have gotten a bit “ commercial” shall we say, a bit too Kitschy.AND, where do you pee? I hope at least they had that covered literally. But your food looked delicious! Of course Rhinebeck made up for all that hopefully.
I always love watching your episodes AND this one has got some real Nora Ephron vibes. *chef's kiss*
When I saw how long this video was, I was so excited because I never want your videos to end! Not boring at all! Thanks for sharing all the details of Rhinebeck! I'm so sorry to hear about all the horror stories of Wool & Folk. Glad to not hear of any serious injuries or anything like that. Hopefully things will improve greatly. Anyway, great video once again. Thank you!
I'm so happy you had a good time. It looked like you had a ball! thank you for sharing all the photos and everything you brought home. And it was nice that your husband traveled with you. What a trooper.
Oh my God , don't you like blablating despite beeing so ''exausteed''. But you kow what? We drank every words of it 😂 ❤🌸😂😍😘. We love U. Tata Cécile from Paris
Thank you very good video someday I will go😊
Loved this! It was so nice to hear all your details of the event. I enjoyed all your acquisitions too! I'm sure you looked beautiful (even wet). Thank you for sharing all the fun and dinners and events with us! You made it sound so fun; I'm going to try for the MInnesota sheep festival next year...although I'm allergic to wool!
It was so lovely meeting you at Rhinebeck! I kinda yelled "Youngfolk Knits- Kayci!!" just as you and Becky approached the hill. I kept babbling about your podcast and how I love your aesthetic and you gave me a hug and a pin! Thanks so much!
I'm so glad that you had a good time in my home state of NY!! It was so great to meet you and I loved seeing everything you picked up on the trip. I had to laugh at your grocery store experience - a lot of stores have paper bags for 5 cents each but some have none at all!! We have totally done away with plastic bags which has its pros and cons. Can't wait to see what you knit up with this gorgeous yarn!!!!!!
Wait a second - your hair and you looked gorgeous......no drown rat...hhahaha you are beautiful!
That’s what I was thinking! 😅
Just finished the intro on my first time watching one of your videos, and I am already in love with how beautiful everything looks! We have *very* similar taste. What a feast for the senses. I also love your accent ❤
Kaci!!!! It was so great to see you in person and spend a little time with you this weekend. I love everything you picked up and can’t wait to see it all knit up. I’ve actually just finished my Stick Season in the DK version of the Primrose Yarn Co Roan you picked up and am pretty sure I have the same color of the sport in my stash!
I think we’ll need to have our own little satellite meet-up at the next festival. 😉
Yea! So glad you had a wonderful time at Rhinebeck! Next year join us in NJ for the NJ Sheep & Wool Festival. ❤
I just found you on UA-cam. I luv you intro video!!!!
