Maynard said they made tool “because the music at the time didn’t have the climaxes in their songs in the right positions so they made songs with the climaxes where they needed to be for their own personal masturbation.” 😂
Tool maximizes discordance. Discordance is the key to originality ...to patterns within apparent chaos...and that is why their music is not easily consumed with a mere hearing of a 10 second clip...they are so tightly integrated across the variation in sounds that to get the full experience you MUST listen to the whole song...this is also why you can listen to them over and over and over and traverse different explorations on the sonic landscape all these varied ....not so easily predicted sound patterns take you...it's glorious work.
Tool is pretty complex, but also relatively easy to parse. Especially since you only have to sort through 4 parts that are each so independent. The music isn't subtle, and it's not hiding anything. Tool is great though.
Not really. They put thought into their writing and adhere to an overarching theme and a gimmick original to themselves, but that's just the art of album making which is all but dead now, but would have just made them just another dog in the pack in the 70s.

Like they're erecting some massive monolith from the center of existence. I guess the one word I would use to describe Tool is "massive". And I definitely don't intend for that to be a pretentious synonym for "big", I mean truly massive. Larger than anything we could fully perceive as a whole without mapping out one part at a time.
Man, I was tripping one time and literally heard different lyrics to the song... I tried to record what the CD was playing on my cassette tape but of course it wasn't the same
Yes. I've felt like TOOL is music that always existed, "the music of the universe" as you well said it. When I hear them I feel something resonating inside of me, something primitive and something bigger than myself.
Well said brother tool is bigger then music I was 15 years old when I heard undertow I was like wtf is this and where the fuck has this music been hidding I absolutely love this band above all others Maynerd and com. Your real dad I think the word “primal”, which you mentioned, sums them up well. It’s like their music comes from the species from which we later evolved. We recognize it at a fundamental level, but our conscious minds find it sometimes disturbing, confusing, primitive, almost alien. Great band!
I always look forward to these, but this has easily been my favorite artists series so far. I love to see how the compositional techniques a band uses actually reflects their image and the meaning of their songs and this particular video carried many astute observations and interpretations into Tool's discography. Very well done (btw Periphery, Pink Floyd and Red Hot Chilli Peppers are just begging to have an episode done on them).
Thank you so much for this analysis. Tool has been a band I've listened to for many, many years and everytime I come back to their music I use it to guide me. The lyrics always seem to take on a new meaning no matter how I seek to apply them and weirdly enough they always provide an answer. A sense of calm within the chaos.
Most songs hand you a glass full of a concept; whether it is meaning, emotion, ideology, or story. Tool's music takes you by the hand, leads you out into the forest of human experience... and leaves you there to find your way back by yourself.
You hit on my very favorite part of Tool, which a lot of people overlook. (I see, particularly on social media, a lot of people who find tool pretentious, and make memes about how douchebags tell them that "they just dont understand" or "this song has more meter/signature changes and is therefore better", which is in some ways fair.) I find Progressive music to be a double-edged sword in general, and I think that the relative popularity of Tool, as a band that has these progressive elements has more to do with this notion than Tool in itself being pretentious. The same things that these people are complaining about could be said tenfold for your typical Dream Theater fan. The part that separates Tool, and in some ways makes them LESS pretentious than your typical Progressive Metal band is the point you made @2:14. They are in many cases using progressive music as a vehicle for representing an idea that includes both music and lyrical theme. To me, Tool is about cohesion and songcraft, rather than instrumental-ism or technique, which drives most ACTUALLY pretentious Progressive Music. In reality, they take a pretty minimalist approach from a skill perspective when compared to almost all of their contemporaries. Dany Carey is almost unarguably the most "showy" member, but even he is generally using his percussion to tie together elements, establish mood, or to foreshadow concepts that are to come later in the arrangements. Prog music is by it's nature kind of pretentious, but Tool seem to be using it as a vehicle for eliminating limitations in pursuit of expressing a usually NECESSARILY complex idea or emotion, rather than using it as an excuse to show off. I get that their fans can be overbearing, but it drives me nuts when people miss this point, and essentially extend a gripe that they have with progressive music in general almost entirely onto a band within that genre that deserves it the least.
Tool is seld indulgent and pretentious King Crimson is self indulgent and pretentious RUSH is self indulgent and pretentious Yes is self indulgent and pretentious Zappa is self indulgent and pretentious Jethro Tull is self indulgent and pretentious Etc. Prog rock is the most hated rock genre in the planet. I remember Sonic Youth were offended when someone implied King Crimson were an influence. Radiohead hates the idea Pink Floyd and Prog has anything to do witth their music. Complex Music is always seen as pretentious and self indulgent.
My favorite band since I was around 16-17. I'm 40 now and I still dig into their stuff. This is the best break down I've heard regarding this band....I believe even Maynard would approve! Bravo, sir!
Not to be snarky but all of the examples of polyrhythms are actually polymeters, and at with the thing about clean parts being around the tonic, the first example is distorted, the second and third examples are bass. Otherwise, great video with great information, just incorrect examples.
You're right, there would have been better examples, but during editing, I decided to go with their more popular riffs. Would've felt weird without the Pot in there somewhere, you know? ;)
If you were going with popular songs, I'm surprised you didn't manage to squeeze in Lateralus somewhere. As a math nerd, I think that it is the greatest song of all time
True. Polymeter not polyrhythm. There are so many examples of this in tool that i think it is hard to pick which examples to use. (Shout out to a favaourite of mine 4:50 of Lateralus) Another note 😉 is that allow Danny Carey does these extremely well this is not by far the first band to do this. So many have before but I think tool is one of the best. Hard to think of a band that did it better.
Danny has answered where he pulls his tribal inspirations, and readily admits to "appropriating" them. Alot of their rhythmic and chordal choices are covered at their music clinic, I recommend going.
Thank you for this video. Tool really changed my life. They gave me a new way of seeing things like mind, philosophy and love. I always try to dig in their concepts more and more to learn every time something new for me, my soul and my art. This video is gorgeously amazing. Thank you.
It'd be great if you did an episode on Alice in Chains (especially hitting hard on their unique vocal harmonies). I'd also love an episode on The Dear Hunter, even though they aren't super popular. Love the show! Keep it up!
Genius. You helped me through a lot of the reasons I love Tool so much that I was never sure how to define myself. Sometimes listening to what someone else thinks will help you wrap your mind all the way around your own thoughts.
Idiot The Great I think that it would be better to cover his main influences (70's prog, British pop, 80's pop, 90's rock and metal)... He's an incredible musician, producer and sound engineer, but his songwriting is ultimately a little derivative and not that distinct on his own.. not the best subject for this series (in my opinion, at least).
Travis the Great That's a completely fair criticism of his work, but I'm more interested in the way he uses concepts and storylines to tie his albums together thematically and creates such listenable music while still making use of complex musical ideas.
Thanks for pronouncing your name in a clear and calm manner. Yeah, it was me who made a comment in a previous video. Jeez man, your content just gets better and better. Thanks!
What a precious piece of video. Seriously! Not only you made my day, this is seriously one masterpiece when it comes to analyzing Tool's music. Thank you so much for your effort you have put into this video. Genius, you.
That was the most clear and concise explanation ive ever heard about tool. I love this band. I ask myself why and explain to friends the reason. They have helped me open my eyes to see the world much differently then the "forced judgmental religious" way of my upbringing. I did not realize this until 2005 before their release of 10000 days. I had an opportunity to visit cosm in NY and it unshackled me from the bonds of the way I was brought up. Helped me accept the world for the way it was instead of judging it for what it isn't while at the same time accepting who I am where I came from and where I am going and growing. You've explained that, breaking down every piece that makes them what they are. Great job!!!
uuuhm what? did you even listen to the songs of tool? if you dont hear the bass your deaf xD What about Obscura, Dying fetus, Korn, Deftones, Rage against the Machine, Haken, any doom metal, I dont know man we must listen to 2 different music genres... When your not supposed to hear it why use it at all xD
Nice job! I love analyzing Tool music. You have shown me yet another perspective. It seems like every time I listen to them or someone else's vision of them, I learn something new.
I think Trent kinda wandered away from his calling, but I do not find him lacking for it. His early work is undeniably epic, straight and true. Alas, things have changed, but also we should not expect artistic expression to be a constant attribute, either. That's how greatness like Reznor's gets ruined I think. It's not so much ideas that run dry, it's inspiration, experiences. In this country it's a year of touring while writing a second album, uh-huh sure you got it, gonna be epic. Downward spiral would be cool on this channel though, no doubt...
I just got into tool recently through my cousin and aunt begging me to check them out. I love every album they've put out and after watching this, I'm more of a fan than ever
My mind blow away with the last quote of Maynard. I'm finishing my degree carrer (Engineering), I have a band at the same time, and many things occuping my mind. So I'm redacting my final job and when I was finding it harder I found out that listening to Tool while doing it (almost everyday since the last few months), it actually clears up my mind with their mesmerizing sounds and focus me on achieving what i want to. Thank you for synthesize all this information on a 15 minutes video with such quallity.
Well done man. Tool’s lyrics always have me searching again and again. You have just opened so many doors for those fortunate enough to see your gift. Thanks 🙏
crazyaboutnature Alice in chains (original with layne) would in fact be extremely superb. You will get one guaranteed view and like right here my friend. Hehe...
Gregory Chuhta old Alice and new Alice is just Jerry Cantrell changing music styles and evolving his writing style. Cantrell was their main songwriter contributing to 94% of the musical compositions and 50% of the lyrics in the Layne days. They were always heading towards the new doom metal style. It already started with Died and Get Born Again. New Alice is fucking good too. One song I'd really like them to dissect is Acid Bubble. Its a complex composition.
I love your artist's series as a whole, but this episode really hit a sweet spot for me, blending and helping make sense of music, image, lyrics, symbolism and intent. A great video honoring a great band, thanks!
Ehhhh, I think it was more money hungry lawyers than the actual band, but I understand it could get a strike. I just wanna see this info beast dissect that band until I see the guts and all. A boy can dream!
THANK YOU! Seriously this saved me too much explanation(and added to my knowledge) when someone compares tool to any other band i will just share this link... much appreciated
I never thought about Prison Sex's double meaning. Here's my interpretation of that sequence: "I've got my hands bound" - He's unable to break free from the limitations placed upon him by religion. "My head down" - He is subservient out of his own sense of inefficacy. Religion gives him a false sense of strength. "And my eyes closed" - He refuses to look with his own eyes, instead believing what he's told to believe. "My throats wide open" He willingly accepts the lies that are fed to him. The image of a praying man was a brilliant observation though. Well done.
@@KodyXXVll So does he says. He also said that they do their music so they can climax in the right moment, that none other music give them. Sooo... Use your own mind, don't be a tool ;P

Great vid. Tool has been my favorite band for about 25 years now. I always have a hard time explaining the band to people that just do not get it. Your video has done a far better job than I ever could. Nice work.
Maynard for me its the best artist of all times. I mean how often one artist can make tree bands epic??? Tool its far out! Perfect Circle its simply the best, and Puscifer becomes my favorite in 2017 when I was in terrible depression state. Thank You!
@Luka K. hmm and that's why he and his band is still selling out arenas and some people would sell their left nut to see them and your still sitting at a keyboard complaining and critiquing some one like your the siskle and ebert of music, sure he may not sound the same but would you after 25 years or so, seriously, some people's children.
@Luka K. Well let's see how you sound and act in 25 years. People get older, they sound different, their ambitions change there's bands from the 60's and 70's performing for free at county fairs and casinos just trying to stay some what relevant. I'm not saying tool is the greatest band ever or even my favorite but tool is still gonna make music and sell tickets and people are still gonna listen to them and buy them whether they suck or not and they're still gonna make their millions whether you like it or not. One of my favorite bands growing up was metallica do you think I like their music they've put out the last decade or 2 no would I still go see them even though they're old and gray fuck yea it's just what people do and always will.
I would love to see you do a vid on Lynyrd Skynyrd and Leonard Cohen (the 2 Lynards lol)...Skynyrd because I think they were amazing at constructing melodies and riffs and Cohen because he was so...different, and was a true poet.
Such a wonderful breakdown full of profound theories yet very basic informational thought when it comes to just scratching the surface of the masters; TOOL
Damn, this was an excellent video. My favorite takeaway was how the band remains around the tonic for extended songs, lending that "non-western", universal vibe. Tool has been one of my favorite mindblowing bands for a long time now, no one does it quite like them
Really great video! For me the most interesting Maynard lyrics are Forty six & Two - He´s talking about what has to happen with our shadow (as Carl Jung writes) to get 2 more chromosomes (I don´t know if I´m exactly right, but that´s one of the interpretations)

Stretchy Pockets Well said.
Really well said dude! I think exactly the same!
Tool is seld indulgent and pretentious
King Crimson is self indulgent and pretentious
RUSH is self indulgent and pretentious
Yes is self indulgent and pretentious
Zappa is self indulgent and pretentious
Jethro Tull is self indulgent and pretentious
Etc.
Prog rock is the most hated rock genre in the planet. I remember Sonic Youth were offended when someone implied King Crimson were an influence. Radiohead hates the idea Pink Floyd and Prog has anything to do witth their music. Complex Music is always seen as pretentious and self indulgent.
bemersonbakebarmen I like listening to/playing complex music not because I wanna show off, but just because I think it sounds cool and I like it
By eliminating limitations you open yourself to all possibilities I get it 🔧🔧
Do Porcupine Tree/The Smiths/Opeth/Steven Wilson
Iñaki Pol Martinez one at the time dude
Just giving him some options, I'm not asking him to do all of them
did not know all those bands collaborated together
Joseph Hernandez yes they did!!!
Porcupine tree!!! Do porcupine tree!
My favorite band since I was around 16-17. I'm 40 now and I still dig into their stuff. This is the best break down I've heard regarding this band....I believe even Maynard would approve! Bravo, sir!
Hey, can we expect a Primus video in the future?
I'm so down for Primus or System of a Down
yes primus!
That would be so good!!
..primus sucks..
Yes please!
Not to be snarky but all of the examples of polyrhythms are actually polymeters, and at with the thing about clean parts being around the tonic, the first example is distorted, the second and third examples are bass. Otherwise, great video with great information, just incorrect examples.
I noticed that as well with the examples. I don’t really agree with his interpretations but a good video nonetheless.
You're right, there would have been better examples, but during editing, I decided to go with their more popular riffs. Would've felt weird without the Pot in there somewhere, you know? ;)
If you were going with popular songs, I'm surprised you didn't manage to squeeze in Lateralus somewhere. As a math nerd, I think that it is the greatest song of all time
@@nerdmiestergeneral42 he did put lateralus in there, you just missed it. This whole video is just an example of overthinking and overanalyzing hahaha
I've been a tool fan for over 25 years, and you've done something I've not seen prior. Great job & Thank you.
that was mind-blowing ...
Would be great if you could do the same with Porcupine Tree, Pineapple thief, Opeth and Coheed and Cambria
David Muñoz hell yeah Coheed and Cambria!
Porcupine Tree for sure! It would be great to touch on Steven Wilson's solo work as well, he's an incredibly prolific artist.
Thanks!
One of your best works.
What a precious piece of video. Seriously! Not only you made my day, this is seriously one masterpiece when it comes to analyzing Tool's music. Thank you so much for your effort you have put into this video. Genius, you.
Excellent! Great video and addition to the series. Now you just need NIN!
Dan Kaiser YES YES YES YES YES
Outstanding video! Long time Tool fan and you hit it perfectly!
Their music has been a tool of survival and personal growth for many years. And one for which I'm very appreciative..
Those "clean guitar parts" were mostly the bass.
For real though
the fuck do you think a bass is?
@@saberuk7374 You're not supposed to hear the bass in metal
uuuhm what? did you even listen to the songs of tool? if you dont hear the bass your deaf xD
What about Obscura, Dying fetus, Korn, Deftones, Rage against the Machine, Haken, any doom metal,
I dont know man we must listen to 2 different music genres...
When your not supposed to hear it why use it at all xD
albo nymus deep breaths, friend.
You are the most articulate person I’ve watched here in you tube, keep the great job.
I've always said tool has a tribal sound. Look at songs like jambi.
Fleato I couldn’t agree more
They are heavily influenced by Indian music
Lipan conjuring
Triad!!
Core Puncher HA! so true 😂🤣😂🤣
Nice job! I love analyzing Tool music. You have shown me yet another perspective. It seems like every time I listen to them or someone else's vision of them, I learn something new.
Do more TooL *PLEASE GOD, PLEASE*
This channel is underrated and deserves more subscribers. Thank you so much for this
Great video. I'd love to see Nine Inch Nails next!
Yes! You keep doing my favourite bands!
Could you maybe do Joy Division?
i always find new things out about this band that makes me appreciate them even more. favorite band of all time.
Great analysis, tool to me are enriching, escapism, fulfilment, and spiritual satisfaction...
I love your other channels too, Today I Found Out, and Biographics! Your musical insights and historical acumen are truly inspiring!
Bahahahahha
Ok man this is a completely different guy that just looks the same
@@k2coolsullivan948 LOLOL RIGHT? :D
Well done man. Tool’s lyrics always have me searching again and again. You have just opened so many doors for those fortunate enough to see your gift. Thanks 🙏
Okay, for real. You must do Alice in Chains now!
crazyaboutnature Alice in chains (original with layne) would in fact be extremely superb. You will get one guaranteed view and like right here my friend. Hehe...
YES! This!
💖😣💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖👀
Gregory Chuhta Layne didn't write Alice in Chains' songs. Jerry Cantrell did.
Maynard is one of my personal favorite artists. Thank you for dissecting this band and having it make sense. This series is fantastic!
Tool - Cathartic, psychedelic, angst, best of 2000s metal, rush-esque
I love your artist's series as a whole, but this episode really hit a sweet spot for me, blending and helping make sense of music, image, lyrics, symbolism and intent. A great video honoring a great band, thanks!
Queens of The Stone Age! You gotta do them man!
Garrison Peters those guys are amazing
Yeah
He'd have to leave out any clips of no one knows. They get yanked. Everything else seems to be fair game.
wingracer 16 Rick Beato already did No One Knows, so it won't matter if its left out
Ehhhh, I think it was more money hungry lawyers than the actual band, but I understand it could get a strike. I just wanna see this info beast dissect that band until I see the guts and all. A boy can dream!
THANK YOU! Seriously this saved me too much explanation(and added to my knowledge) when someone compares tool to any other band i will just share this link... much appreciated
Amazing video as always, dude. Never seen such quality of music analysis. System Of A Down next? Rock on!
thanks so much. now I know a little bit more about why this band's music makes me feels this way.
I never thought about Prison Sex's double meaning. Here's my interpretation of that sequence:
"I've got my hands bound" - He's unable to break free from the limitations placed upon him by religion.
Well done.
I agree, well articulated
Also conjures up an image of a blindfolded bound person with their throat cut
No, actually, that song is literally about maynard being molested and raped in the ass as a kid.
@@KodyXXVll So does he says. He also said that they do their music so they can climax in the right moment, that none other music give them. Sooo... Use your own mind, don't be a tool ;P
It describes a sacrificial human being.
Really enjoyed this. As a massive Tool fan it was nice to both hear someone understand them but also on my eyes/ears to some of their subject matters. Subscribed!!
Thank you for making this video.
Great vid. Tool has been my favorite band for about 25 years now. I always have a hard time explaining the band to people that just do not get it. Your video has done a far better job than I ever could. Nice work.
I think of Tool as a folk band but with heavy guitars, especially the singing on Lateralus
You just described all the reasons I love Tool in a way I never could.
Maynard for me its the best artist of all times. I mean how often one artist can make tree bands epic??? Tool its far out! Perfect Circle its simply the best, and Puscifer becomes my favorite in 2017 when I was in terrible depression state.
Thank You!
Conditions of my parole is such a good album. Now I need to listen
@Luka K. hmm and that's why he and his band is still selling out arenas and some people would sell their left nut to see them and your still sitting at a keyboard complaining and critiquing some one like your the siskle and ebert of music, sure he may not sound the same but would you after 25 years or so, seriously, some people's children.
Clicked this video and you vastly exceeded my expectations on this. You do fantastic work.
A Perfect Circle next!
Sound quality of this video is several notches above most other videos, thumbs up
I would love to see you do a vid on Lynyrd Skynyrd and Leonard Cohen (the 2 Lynards lol)...Skynyrd because I think they were amazing at constructing melodies and riffs and Cohen because he was so...different, and was a true poet.
I love that you finally said your name slowly, so we can actually hear how it's pronounced correctly.
Really good insightful video, great job man
My eyes are now open! this was incredible! thank you for this video.
I loved this episode so much. Great work.
Such a wonderful breakdown full of profound theories yet very basic informational thought when it comes to just scratching the surface of the masters; TOOL
Do animals as leaders next please!!
lewis vincent fuck off
Jesus why?
Jesus is just mad three musicians play better than God Himself
Damn, this was an excellent video. My favorite takeaway was how the band remains around the tonic for extended songs, lending that "non-western", universal vibe. Tool has been one of my favorite mindblowing bands for a long time now, no one does it quite like them
Really great video! For me the most interesting Maynard lyrics are Forty six & Two - He´s talking about what has to happen with our shadow (as Carl Jung writes) to get 2 more chromosomes (I don´t know if I´m exactly right, but that´s one of the interpretations)
Lukáš Urban The shadow is your unbridled potentials without your anxiety and self limiters. Basically evolving and transcending ones self
This is the best Tool analysis I've seen so far. Thank you for making it.
Do the Mars Volta or King Crimson.
Deathsoulx25x yes!! I wanna see TMV
Deathsoulx25x The Mars Volta is my favorite band and I have wanted holistic songwriting to do a video on them since I first subscibed
The Mars Volta!!!!!!!
Yessss... TMV please!
Mars Volta would be amazing!
glad i found this channel i've always wanted baritone Cristoph Waltz in my life
Another masterpiece, well done Bro! Hope you do some analisys about System of a Down someday. Cheers!
UA-cam just keeps blessing me this month. Liked and subscribed.
Love Tool! Please do Dillinger Escape Plan at some point! :D
Kevin Yes!!!!!!
yeeeea, you're gonna love reviewing them
Thank you for reminding me why I fell in love with Lateralus 17 years ago. Amazing stuff! I saw them at Ozzfest 2013 and it was REALLY AWESOME. It was the closest thing Ill have to a transcendent experience.
Do System of a Down next
Yes
I would love to see this
Yes
+1

I first watched your Muse vid and now this.....Wow dude, there's some real knowledge here. I've been using UA-cam for over a decade and this will be the first channel I've ever subscribed to. As a musician, there are some interesting themes and perceptions presented here.
*Coheed and Cambria!* But you can also go with *Puscifer* and *The Reign of Kindo* ;) Anyway: awesome job. Keep it up!
Stumbled upon this while desperately hoping for Tool's next album, brilliantly done! Thank you good sir!
