According the Danny Carey. Interview with musicradar "We were actually playing live. It’s a sad thing when almost every band you see isn’t playing doing that, it’s the clicks and backing tracks that are keeping time. I’ve never played to a click on stage in my life…”

Wow! This video got more views in a day than most of my videos combined have ever gotten! Things I learned from the comments:
    - The roll at the beginning is in time!
    - Looks like Danny doesn't play to a click.
    - The verses are in 33/8, although not everyone seems to agree.
    - Some people really liked my explanations/breakdown/energy/etc. Thanks a lot for that!
    - The Tool Army is strong!
    - Danny Carey is 58!!!
Thanks for all the views and comments, guys! This is not my usual type of video, but I might make more in the future!

The verse progression is definitely in 33/8.
I've seen people mention different ways of counting it, but I personally feel it as a six-bar phrase, kind of broken into two parts: 6, 6, 5--6, 5, 5 (eighth notes).
What I think gives people different feels is the first note when the verse progression starts (timestamps for the original video: 1:27, 1:44); I've seen some people say they hear that as the downbeat in a bar of 2/4 or something, but I think of it as being on count 4 of the last bar in the phrase (which would be 5/8).

I think you did a great job displaying a drummers point of view on one of the most impressive and talented drummers on this planet. Haters will hate, criers will cry, reactions are a "personal view" without pandering and that is exactly what you have done. I thank you brother, I have watched this video a dozen times and it never gets old. Great job and keep them coming.

    • @micahniederkrome2480

Don't worry about the haters man, cool vid. I'll add one more thing about the bridge that I find incredible. When he eventually goes into the swiss army triplet sticking pattern that you identified, he's playing them in the form of 16th notes (rather than triplets) and keeping the 4/4 quarter note on his kick and hi-hat. The best way to count that as a drummer is in 3/4 in my opinion, because then you're sticking pattern and the kick drum seem to line up every measure, rather than changing and taking 4 measures to cycle back to the beginning. Hard part is trying to count in 3, while the rest of the band is playing in 4 (or one measure of 3 and one of 5 is how I feel it). Danny's playing is always mind boggling to me.

I am not an every day listening tool fan... the same way I don't put Mozart into my car while driving.. but the amount of respect I have for them is off the charts. This song, objectively is one of the best I have ever heard. A true masterpiece start to finish. I can't even imagine what the writing room looks like when composing something like this. I listen to mostly hardcore and metallic hardcore and LOVE polyrhythmic mathcore like the DIllinger escape plan and Converge etc.. But I must stop and tip my hat to Tool. Such a masterpiece

That doesn’t mean they never use them (I’ve definitely heard one on a making of for one studio track). For this song, they might need to since the guitar and bass both use a fixed delay. But they also might not need it since the guitar or bass always starts off setting the tempo before he comes in, so maybe not. (At least there are no sequenced synth sounds or anything to sync up to, the synth stuff later is played live by Adam.) I’m going to guess not unless they really need to sync to something automatic.

They are playing in 33! Easiest way to count it for me is to think of the first bass note as the pickup note, then count 7 twice, and then 5 double time. That means two rounds of 14 to get 28, plus the 5 at the end for 33. Easy, right? Lol.

This guy and Key of Geebz are definitely best for this. This guy gives a great drum breakdown, and Geebz gives a much more generalized overview of each instrument but also breaks down how the meters are progressing within the time signature of the song. Both have brought so much clarity to the beat and flow of this song.
Geebz in particular unlocks the hack to head banging to this song. Lol it has a steady driving tempo, just a lot of meter changes within it. But the tempo NEVER changes through the whole thing. It’s what Danny locks into with the hi-hat during his solo section. You’ll notice upon another listen that that persists through every section of the song.

Thank you for not carrying drum sticks into this reaction video. Have seen a few lately where someone will show up at the start of Pnuema to help us break it down, optimistically carrying a set of sticks. I just wanna hug the guy and gently take them away, "there there, son, you won't be needing those today. You're better off without, trust me." One guy looked like he was going to just take up knitting. Good work, I loved how you couldn't help but react to some of the fills....it's like instant joy.

I've watched so many reactions to this song and yours was great..and informative. I'm not a drummer but am a huge Tool and Danny fan. Such an amazing talent..the octopus observed in his natural habitat!

I rarely comment on reaction channels, most of them seem pretentious to me. But i must say i loved this format. You are clearly enjoying what you are watching. Plus there's so many new things I learnt from this single video. You earned a sub. Cheers!

Haha I love this so much. I did a piano cover of it, and when I first heard it, I had exactly the same reaction! I was like, “make up your mind,” in reference to all the time signatures changes. I had to practice the whole song straight for 3 hours to get it 100% into a “muscle-memory-pocket.” But after that... game on. Let’s go. Super fun!

I'm not trying to dissect his drumming.. but it seems to me that when he plays, he's accenting the vocals with his hits(on the snare or bass/cymbal crash. Idk, he's a genius!!!

You by far have the best reaction video.. Most of the these drum "experts" or "teachers" are like "whoa!" I have no idea what hes doing or "that's so cool!" without any analysis
