How to use 'There is...' and 'It is...' and dummy subjects

- In some languages you can translate 'it is' and 'there is' with just one phrase. But in English we use them differently and explain how in this video lesson. We demonstrate how we use 'it is' and 'there is' as dummy subjects in lots of common English expressions and we also share lots of waiter waiter jokes.

Vicki and Jay, "The waiter is terrible" but you are fantastic (teachers and actors)!
Ha! Thanks Rafael. Glad you liked it.
"Waiter, waiter, there's a fly in my soup."
- "Don't worry, madam. The spider on the bread roll will get it for you!"
Ha! We'll have to put that one in another video, Craig.
It's lovely to listen to mature people speaking in a kind and clear way😀

Whoops! I meant examples. :-)

Respected teacher, being undisputedly the greatest grammarian of this time, you are earnestly entreated with folded hands to let me know a bit as to whether the following Cleft sentences are Noun Clause, Adjective clause or Adverbial Clause -(A)It was yesterday that we met him (B) It was yesterday when we met him (C) It was last Saturday that we met him (D) It was last Saturday when we met him.
The first joke is an old musician joke. Never gets old.

My dear teachers Vicky and Jay, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your invaluable lessons. It really helped me in communicating with my foreign colleagues. That's lots of useful tips. How's the weather there Vicki and Jay? Here in São Paulo, Brazil it's 10 degrees, it's funny but we're a tropical country, lots of people get a cold here in the winter season.
But I'll be honest, I love winter season.
Hello E-JO. It sounds like you're having a very chilly winter. We had a long winter here but now summer is in full swing. I love it. I can wear flip flops all the time and leave my coat at home when I go out and we can eat on the deck most nights.

Thanks for this lovely and useful lesson.:) And...may I make a wish? I wonder if you can make the videos about imitation? Because I think through the imitation practice is the best way to help me speak more natural. Again, thanks for the teaching. I really appreciate it.:D
It's so interesting that you say this Jasmine because I've been wondering whether we can do just this. We have lots of short dialogues that illustrate lots pronunciation features and useful structures that might work for this. Let me think about it and thank you very much for this idea.
SO Thank you , it,s very useful
So glad it was useful. Thanks for telling us Taher. ;-)

Oh that's so nice to hear, Eddie. Thank you!
It's great day on Saturday nice meeting your again.
Hello Nick. Good to see you here again too.
There are three actors in the video & it's great to learn English from them😊 Hopefully, the way I use those words is correct💪Thanks for making this useful video👏
Oh great example, Sid Siu. Yes, your sentence was correct. Thanks for writing.
Great video and lesson! If I can use 'crisp' here to describe the lesson, then it's crisp with a flavour of humour :) Thank you Vicki and Jay for your wonderful effort!
I like the adjective crisp, Ahmed. It's how I want my apples and (potato) crisps to be, so I'm delighted you think this lesson is crisp.
It also means clear, direct, and effective, right? I hope I didn't choose the wrong adjective :)
We might say an audio recording is crisp and then we'd mean the sound is clear and pleasantly sharp. And a photo might be crisp meaning it's clear and sharp too. Using it to describe a video and its contents is an unusual use, but I like it. :-)
Thank you SEV for the clarification! I'll never misuse it again in the future :)
I think it's really good to experiment with words as you did there. How can we ever know their contexts of use without playing around with them?
love it!
Thank you! :-)
Thanks a lot for this video. It was very useful for me :)
That's great to hear. Thanks Anastasiia. :-)
It was very useful video.thanks you🥰

Great video!
Thanks Saulo!
I like your video very much. it's really helpful.
:-)
Thanks again to both of you for another interesting and funny video. There are a lot of flies in it. I feel the same way as you, Vicki, I don’t like them, especially in my food or drink, but somehow Jay manages to make them almost likable. Is this a new ability of his?... I would like to be a fly on the wall to witness your recording sessions! 😉
Ha! AIf you ever visit Philadelphia Scoobynadou, tell us so we can incorporate you in a script.
Thanks for the kind offer. I’ll keep that in mind.
Thank you
You're welcome Larn ya. Thank you for writing. :-)

Glad you think so!
English through vaudeville! I love it!
Ha! Glad you liked it Steve. :-)
I notice native speakers like to use “there’s”, when speaking, even when the subject complement is plural.
Oh well spotted, AL. Linguists have found that this is an area where the language is changing.
1:19 i think Jay said (( people who can’t)) but you understood the opposite Vicky 😂
🇺🇸VS🇬🇧 difference of pronunciation in British and American about can and can’t
So Samuel, so many people who watched the can and can't video had issues with our pronunciation differences that we made a whole other video about that. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/kkSBXBSOyoc/v-deo.html. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our video.
Yes thank you and Vicky I am on holiday with my dad in England 🏴 actually my dad is English, and once he said tomato ( tomaato) 🍅 and I said the phrase that Jay often say (( Do you mean a tomato ?( tomayto)
And my grandparents are English speakers too and they say that my English is better than theirs too much they exaggerate
They think my English is fluent but this is thanks to both of you 😁😁😇
Helloooo
I wonder if you can make a video including some famous songs and lyrics used in class to choose a student like eeny meeny miny moe
Oh we'd love to Malak but we are strictly legal at Simple English Videos so we only use music that we can license the rights for. I don't know if I can get eeny meeny miny mo. Are there any other songs you're particularly interested in because I will investigate. You will find a few of our songs in amongst some stories here: www.simpleenglishvideos.com/videos/songs-stories1/
Love the Video. Thanks Vicky and Jay for this Video you and Jay did a great job as always...You know Vicky this week was not good for me at all... England played very well but not make his place in the final. I'm very sad
Ah, wasn't it a shame, Ashish. We're sad here too. Still Croatia played splendidly in the second half and deserved their win. So who will you support for the final?
Simple English Videos Croatia has played very well in this world cup so far...I would like to Croatia become world champion this time
Super!
Thanks Maria!
Do a video about what is the difference between anything and something i am spanish speaker and i am learning english
Oh, it's so interesting that you have requested this Ivan. When we made a video about some and any I found myself writing a list of things I wanted to say about anything and something. I'm sure we'll go back to it and do this - maybe not this year, but probably next.
Thanks
:-)
haha such a great video I loved it )))))
Glad you liked it, Gulay!!
This is a wonderful lesson, I will never frustrate if i find flies in my wine, because they are only 2 and they don't drink a lot of wine!
Ha! We hope that your wine is always fly-free Lyudmila, but if you swallow one by accident, you can always wash it down with more wine.
Simple English Videos ha-ha, yes!
It's great
Thanks Linh Phan thùy. We're glad you liked it.
That waiter...great video!
Thanks Miriam. So glad you liked it. And yes, that waiter...
:) good lesson
We're so glad you liked it Ladomo. Thanks for letting us know and thank you for watching.
what a fun and useful video to watch! i have a question though,
can we say "there" is the subject of a sentence?
for example,
there is a fly in my soup.
there- subject
is - verb
a fly - object
is this right?
Very nice auntie
Glad you liked it Mintu Roy.
Hi Vicki and Jay, my name is Samatha. There's a like in "Simple English Videos" from me. How is my example? Thank you both of you 😃.
Your example is perfect, Sridevi. Oh, and thanks for the like :-)
Could you do a video about 'this is' and 'it is'?
Interesting suggestion. Thanks for this Gabrysia. You might find this useful: www.myenglishteacher.eu/ask/question/when-to-use-this-and-it-in-english/
Wonderful 👍🙋🏻🎶🌹🍀🌸I must learn english👍🙋🏻🌹🍀🌸🍀🐝many greetings to
Hello Fortressone. Glad you liked it.
thank u I m from argentina :d very funny.
Hi Roxana. We're so glad you enjoyed this video. Thanks for letting us know and thanks for watching.
Hi!
I am confused about one thing and want to ask a question about that.
When should I use dummy subjects?
I mean, for example,
I saw following example
'There are five Dutch people in our' village. '
When I say ' Five Dutch people are in our village.'
What's the meaning difference between two sentences above?
You'd be really helping me out.
Hi Yightcan. I'd say the first of your sentences if I wanted to tell you about the existence of these people. Perhaps I didn't know that there were 5 Dutch people there. The second sentence is not grammatically wrong but it's harder to imagine a situation where I'd say it. Perhaps there has been an invasion and five Dutch people are leading the charge?
How differentiate the using of "This is" and "There is"?
Dewi, we use "this is" to describe something that's right in front of us. For example, "This is my brother Arthur." Or, "This is chocolate ice cream I've bought for dessert." But "There is" refers to something elsewhere. "There's a hurricane coming." "There's a foul odor in the air." "And sometimes we can use it to describe circumstances, like 'there is no more money in my bank account. I'm broke." And we can use "this is" to describe something that's happening at the moment. "I hate the taste of chocolate ice cream. This is horrible.' I hope that helps.
