  • In some languages you can translate 'it is' and 'there is' with just one phrase. But in English we use them differently and explain how in this video lesson. We demonstrate how we use 'it is' and 'there is' as dummy subjects in lots of common English expressions and we also share lots of waiter waiter jokes.

      We might say an audio recording is crisp and then we'd mean the sound is clear and pleasantly sharp. And a photo might be crisp meaning it's clear and sharp too. Using it to describe a video and its contents is an unusual use, but I like it. :-)

      Oh we'd love to Malak but we are strictly legal at Simple English Videos so we only use music that we can license the rights for. I don't know if I can get eeny meeny miny mo. Are there any other songs you're particularly interested in because I will investigate. You will find a few of our songs in amongst some stories here: www.simpleenglishvideos.com/videos/songs-stories1/

      Ah, wasn't it a shame, Ashish. We're sad here too. Still Croatia played splendidly in the second half and deserved their win. So who will you support for the final?

      Oh, it's so interesting that you have requested this Ivan. When we made a video about some and any I found myself writing a list of things I wanted to say about anything and something. I'm sure we'll go back to it and do this - maybe not this year, but probably next.

    This is a wonderful lesson, I will never frustrate if i find flies in my wine, because they are only 2 and they don't drink a lot of wine!

      Ha! We hope that your wine is always fly-free Lyudmila, but if you swallow one by accident, you can always wash it down with more wine.

    what a fun and useful video to watch! i have a question though,
    can we say "there" is the subject of a sentence?
    for example,
    there is a fly in my soup.
    there- subject
    is - verb
    a fly - object
    is this right?

    Hi!
    I am confused about one thing and want to ask a question about that.
    When should I use dummy subjects?
    I mean, for example,
    I saw following example
    'There are five Dutch people in our' village. '
    When I say ' Five Dutch people are in our village.'
    What's the meaning difference between two sentences above?
    You'd be really helping me out.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  2 роки тому

      Hi Yightcan. I'd say the first of your sentences if I wanted to tell you about the existence of these people. Perhaps I didn't know that there were 5 Dutch people there. The second sentence is not grammatically wrong but it's harder to imagine a situation where I'd say it. Perhaps there has been an invasion and five Dutch people are leading the charge?

    How differentiate the using of "This is" and "There is"?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 роки тому

      Dewi, we use "this is" to describe something that's right in front of us. For example, "This is my brother Arthur." Or, "This is chocolate ice cream I've bought for dessert." But "There is" refers to something elsewhere. "There's a hurricane coming." "There's a foul odor in the air." "And sometimes we can use it to describe circumstances, like 'there is no more money in my bank account. I'm broke." And we can use "this is" to describe something that's happening at the moment. "I hate the taste of chocolate ice cream. This is horrible.' I hope that helps.
