    I love the deck. My house, in a small town, used to have one. My family usually went to it for stargazing. But now we moved to an apartment in the city :D

      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 років тому +2

      Ah yes, Xuan. Decks are a great place for star gazing. We have a lot of light pollution from all skyscrapers, so ours isn't the best place for star gazing, but it's not bad.

    I love your deck. What a beautiful view: skyscrapers and trees!!! Philly is a lovely city and you’re lucky to live in. I think it must be nice sunbathing, reading, eating... on your deck when spring arrives. I live in a terraced house: three floors, 32 stairs from ground to mansard, a front garden and another behind the house.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 років тому +2

      Hello Marymar. Yes, Philly is an unusual city because there are lots of little homes like ours next to the skyscrapers. We feel very lucky to live here. And you have taught me a new word: mansard. Thank you! I think we might call it a gambrel in British English.

    • @marymar5646
      @marymar5646 5 років тому +1

      Simple English Videos Mansard?Attic? Do these words mean the same thing? Sorry, but I didn’t find gambrel in my vocabulary...

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 років тому +1

      I think (and I might be wrong) that mansard is the words Americans use to describe a roof that starts off with a normal slope and then slopes down very suddenly. People might have their attics inside the space but a mansard is the outside roof bit. In British English I think we'd call that a gambrel, but it's a technical word and I'm not sure. Maybe an architect or someone will read this one day and be able to help us out.

    My birthday is on the Fourth of July. I think the word a lot of is great. Much for uncountable nouns and many for countable nouns. I have much money. A lot of is neutral. I have a lot of friends- I have a lot of sugar. I have much sugar. In German there is only one form- es gibt- in french il y a. We Portuguese people use one há. Spanish use one in the present- hay. I have many friends.

      Hi Alberto. Great to hear about your home and well done on your English! Perfect! The only thing that was unclear is how you manage to share your deck with friends. Do you invite them around or is it a shared space? Sharing with friends is one of the big pleasures of our deck too. We didn't get to tell you in the video but we have some great neighbors who live next door. They have a separate deck, but we can talk when we go outside and we often share a drink and chat out there.

    Hello from Russia, you're so cute, I can't stop watching your videos since i accidentaly found them. You remind me of my first teacher of English in school, when i was about 6 years old. Tha'ts a great explanation though i alreardy know how to use these words (as fas as i count that i know :D), but it really helpfull for those who don't. Can't say for other languages, but especially for russians, because for all of these words we have only one in our language. So I remember it was confusing for me to get them how to use properly in different situations compare for just 1 word for every of this in Russian :c And if i may ask, make a video about phrasal verbs: make off, cutt off, get off, get on, go on etc. Because most of the people have big problems with understanding and translations of that (translator often doesn't translate correctly such words). It would be very helpful in that easy way you're making your videos of grammar explanations. Thank you for your videos, keep it on!

    Does the deck mean the roof of the house?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 років тому +1

      Hello Haider. The roof of a house is its protective covering. In our case our deck is similar to a roof because it covers the top floor of our house. But decks can also be at different levels - including at ground level. A deck is a wooden floor built out from the back of a house, where you can sit and relax outdoors. Another meaning of the word is one of the levels on a bus or plane.

      Hello Pablojavier. Great to hear from you. Yes, roof garden is another common term. Roof gardens are normally larger and you'll find them at the top of hotels, or apartment buildings where they might be a shared space.

    Hi Vicki and Jay! Thank you for your great video lessons!
    Could you help me please?
    How to say "VERY much" in positive sentences? More than a lot?
    And is the following sentence correct?
    My job gives me not only a lot of money, but it also makes me feel much better.
    Thank you VERY MUCH!

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 років тому +1

      Hello Elukha. I'm not sure if I've understood the question, but perhaps this will help: We usually use 'very' with adjectives to make them stronger or more intense. For example. It's very hot on the deck. It's very noisy on the deck. (We couldn't say it's very much hot, or it's very much noisy). But there are some adjectives (often they are past participles that we use as adjectives) where we can't say very and we have to say 'very much'. For example: I'm very much afraid that the noise will be a problem. (We wouldn't say very afraid here.) We very much enjoyed the party. (We wouldn't say very enjoyed.) It's complicated, isn't it? These sentences are pretty formal and the good news is I don't expect you'll run into them very often in everyday speech.
      And your sentence is fine. 'Much better' is a comparative structure. We can use words like much and far to make comparative adjectives stronger. If you didn't want to compare two things, you could say 'it also makes me feel good'. Hope this helps.

    Instead of saying we use "many" before countable nouns and "much" before uncountable nouns, could I tell my students we use many with plural nouns and much with singular? They sometimes have a hard time trying to figure out what countable and uncountable nouns are, since depending on the noun, it's different from language to language.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 років тому

      Hi Rafael. Great question. First the rule. We use many with plural countable nouns but with singular countable nouns we'd say a or an. And yes. You're right that it is hard to figure out whether a noun is countable or uncountable. There are some general patterns nouns follow, (and we'll try to make a video about that) but in lots of cases your students will need to learn them one by one. I'm not sure whether there's a way to get round that I'm afraid.
