I think “bless you” was to do with religion as people started saying it if they caught the Plague and it was used as in “bless you” so God blesses you to get rid of the disease. This was just something I learnt in history 😃 Great video as always anyway! 👍
Thanks so much for chipping with this Ollie. I make perfect sense. It must have religious origins - maybe a sneeze was the sign of the devil or something. :-)
And I've just thought Ollie - you know that nursery rhyme - ring o ring a roses? That dates back to the plague as well. Atishoo was a symptom of the plague. :-)
@Simple English Videos Many nursery rhymes had to do with diseases and many other disturbing things. People believes that the plague was caused by miasma (the mist and smell of the air) So they used to carry round roses to keep the smell away. It's great to find out that what you were actually singing at nursery was about death lol. Mary, Mary Quite Contrary can be seen as another example of nursery rhymes with a strange meaning.
Ok, I'll chime in on this blessed thing by adding my two cents :) From what I could gather, the etymology of the word is not that clear. To me, probably, it has somenthing to do with the old english "bletsian" from the religious formula "to consecrate (with blood)" (from wikipedia). But I can't help and think at the french verb "blesser" (to injure, to hurt, to wound). So , maybe the etymology has french origins : from wound to blood (and bleed) and be consecrated (sacred), like Jesus and his (divine) bleeding. Sort of.
I couldn't help but become a fan and subscribe. You guys are top notch. So much love comes across. I love it and I'm learning a lot. Very best regards from Brazil.
i once read that a chinese guy who studied abroad in Britain was not so used to hear people saying bless you to him after he sneezed, since he felt like he was pulling all other people’s attention to him. And one day after he sneezed, he happened to say “bless me!” before everyone else could say “bless you” to him hhhh

Hi Luc. Vicki here. There's a lot of overlap between the words ill and sick. Ill is more common in British English than American English. Illness tends to be associated with more serious and long term illnesses. So when we are talking about the state of being unwell, we'd often say ill in British English while they'd probably say sick in American English. In British English to be sick can also mean to vomit. We often use sick (but not ill) in front of a noun e.g. a sick child, a sick day. In British English we also have the expression 'to pull a sickie' meaning to pretend to be ill so you can have a day off work. Hope this helps. Read more 5 ▼ REPLY
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Yup I agree! I've heard "I'm gonna be sick" for "I might throw up" in America as well. And pretending to be sick here could maybe be called "faking sick."
Thank you so much for your videos!!! I'm so happy to have discovered you a few days ago!! I'd have a question about this video's subject : what are the differences between tummy and belly, and ache, pain and soreness?? Thanks!!
Tummy is usually a child's word for the abdomen or stomach area on a person's body. When we use the word pain, we think of a sharp feeling that really hurts, compared to ache which is dull but goes on and on. So if you accidentally cut your finger with a knife while slicing bread, you would feel pain. But if your muscles are reacting to excessive exercise, they would ache. A sore, as a noun, usually describes an area of skin that is injured or infected. But as an adjective, it is much like ache. We could say we have sore muscles that ache after excessive exercise. I hope that helps, Mymy.
You two are so sweet, I wish you were my grandparents.
